  • Episode 19 of March's very first time playing/seeing Celeste. All she knows is there are strawberries and a mountain but that's not going to stop her from being the best mountain climber she can be!
    I will give myself a C- on this thumbnail and move on. :)

    Dash diagonally into the ground from the air and jump is a "wave dash" (you know this)
    Dashing up and jumping off of a wall is called a "wall bounce" (sometimes shortened to "wounce" or just "wb")
    Dashing diagonally into the ground while on the ground and jumping is called a "hyper" (this gives the exact same trajectory as a wave dash)
    You can also get your dash back from doing this (like a wave dash) by timing the jump just after your dash ends, this can be tricky to time and is generally why waves are preferred since it turns into a height issue rather than a timing issue, the initial jump for a wave dash just makes it impossible to jump before your dash ends (assuming proper height) and also allows you to buffer the input so it makes the timing a bit more lenient (also getting your dash back is called "extending" and thus the full name for the trick is an "extended hyper")
    Jumping out of the chapter 2 blocks (known as "dream blocks") is called a "dream jump"
    Also, you have done before a "super", which is a hyper but but holding horizontally instead of down diagonal, this gives less speed but more height and can be useful in certain situations (these can also be extended)

      So many terms! Thanks for writing all that out for me. This game has a ton of technical stuff once you scratch past the surface. It's rather amazing

      @@MarchalanCraft An imporant note here is that calling it a "wounce" greatly improves one's celeste skill. The other movement techs also have shortened forms: "dream jump" -> "drump", "wavedash" -> "wash". Each of these you incorporate into your vocabuary will make you better at celeste. (this is 100% true)

      @@MarchalanCraft the celeste community have a bunch of wacky compound tech like the infamous "Baboosted Gultra" and "Casoosted Fuper" (yes, those are real movement tech, albeit very specific and niche)

    You were groooovin' this episode!!! 😮
    Both in gameplay and editing~
    I am really interested in the rootbeer you had though; I've always been into non-alc specialty drinks and that sounds really intriguing
    You have wave-dash and wall bounce correct, if you do like a wavedash without jumping first I think it's called a hyper(-dash), and the last one is called a dream jump. (A dream hyper also exists)
    Also, thank you for the TDoV video

    • @MarchalanCraft
      @MarchalanCraft  2 місяці тому +1

      Groovin is a way to describe that. It still took me 5 hours to get that far, so believe me I cut out a lot of bad attempts 😁
      The exact thing I was drinking was from a company called GT and the drink is called Alive. I found it in a typical grocery store chain where they keep the specialty drinks.
      Dream dash! I love that!
      I'm glad you liked the TDoV thing I posted. I was too nervous to do it last year, but I really wanted to do something this time around 🏳️‍⚧️ (

    As usual, great work. You're nailing this. And, uh... I guess I did sort of think you were the sort of person who cooks a lot for yourself. I also eat a lot of cereal, and make milk and fruit blends for breakfast often.
    I don't really feel like I have a lot to say this time, but I'm thankful for these videos with you every Wednesday. I think you're a super enjoyable person. I hope you have a great day. See you again next week, March.

      Ah, and you pretty much got the tech names right. Others in the replies have told you about the rest. You were doing super dashes before you knew what a wave dash was, so that was neat. The C-Sides probably won't be too bad for you after all of this, if you still decide to try them out. Either way, I'll be here for whatever comes after Farewell.

      Ya see, this is why I brought it up. It's so easy to get that impression of me when that's something I talk about a lot in my videos.
      Truthfully, I do like cooking for myself but my schedule doesn't really let me more than a couple times a week at best. I love making bread the most though. Shocker

    I also first-tried a screen on Farewell. It was the one in the middle section where you stand on the conveyor blocks from chapter 1, (can’t remember what they’re called,) jump off to the left, and then wave dash to the right.
    Then I got to the comb room and ragequit, lmao

      @MarchalanCraft  Місяць тому

      First trying any of the screens in the Farewell is definitely impressive in my mind! I don't blame you for the rage quit though. I've had a bunch of screens I just needed to walk away from for a while. The level is so challenging

    9:20 the reason you do or dont get your dash back is that after you dash, there is a short time where even tho youre touching the grounf you dont get your dash back. if you do the jump input in that time you dont get it, but if you delay the jump input to after that short period it works just fine

    At 11:15, you could have done a ceiling pop
    It's a variable frame perfect trick too janky for most grandmaster maps but it lets you wall jump after sliding all the way off a wall. And since there's no longer a wall in the way, you can jump in the "wrong" direction.
    People actually do it in 4a speedruns but they have a setup that manipulates the subpixel and makes it possible to buffer.

    • @MarchalanCraft
      @MarchalanCraft  2 місяці тому

      Oh no, subpixels. I knew it was only a matter of time before those came up 😆

    • @michalberanek2783
      @michalberanek2783 2 місяці тому +1

      @@MarchalanCraft oh, don't worry, subpixels will never affect you. The only cases I've seen them below Grandmaster is some golden strats and one expert map where there's like a 10% chance you die on one specific input (which goes down to 0 if you slide down a wall instead of grabbing it right away)

  • @michalberanek2783
    @michalberanek2783 2 місяці тому +1

    Before we get into the nomenclature, would you like to try some mods after this?
    Strawberry Jam has around 100 maps with difficulty ranging from Forsaken City to giving world's best players nightmares. I think you could get through the first three lobbies without _too_ much of an issue.
    Alright, so the regular dash into a jump is usually called a superdash (some people call it a dash jump so it wouldn't get confused with the variant mode 'super dashing')
    A wavedash is just a specific setup for an extended* hyperdash.
    A hyperdash uses a crouching jump (you can do it exactly like a super, just with a crouch dash), which gives you less vertical speed and therefore more horizontal speed. You can also make the jump really small and immediately bunnyhop (yes, that's what it's called 😉), gaining more height
    (* Extended just means you jump late enough to get your dash back, see my previous comment)
    All of the above can also be reversed, "simply" (welcome to analog hell) hold the other direction before inputting the jump
    I won't tell you about ultradashes, that's expert+ tech. Three words: very hard nyoom
    And the upward one is a wall bounce.
    Easily the most lenient tech in the game. You can be like half a tile off to either side and still get it. You can even jump 10ish frames after the dash ends.
    Also, the speed boost from a wallbounce lasts insanely long. That means it can carry you over an overhang even if you bonk against one
    (There's an entire category of grandmaster tech built around abusing wallbounce leniency. You can even squeeze another dash in after the jump)
    Finally, the dream tech:
    Jumping out of a dream block is a dream jump (there's also a grandmaster variation called dream double jump).
    Grabbing it after you go through is a dream grab
    (Dashing and jumping before the coyote frames run out is a dream super/hyper. Dream supers are really cursed. Mainly because you have to be in a really weird situation for it to actually be useful - a dream jump is usually straight up better.
    If you somehow get a dash while inside a dream block, you can do a dream redirect
    Dashing through a corner of a spike-covered dream block is called a splipped droost)

    • @MarchalanCraft
      @MarchalanCraft  2 місяці тому

      Wait wait wait. You can do all of these jumps while crouch dashing? If you could see my face right now. That's so much! And here I thought there were only four things I was failing to keep straight. Oh dear! I'm going to need to read this a few times to soak it in.
      I'm probably up for some jam. I think I want to start another game and maybe run that alongside Celeste though. I'm still deciding how I want to go about it

    12:12 fun fact: there is a hidden speedrun room you can access near the middle of that room if you demodash into what seems like 2 spinner spikes in front of a fake wall (cue why if you pay attention to the right side of the screen there is a 2-blocks gap in the wall at the middle of the room) that room is basically just 2 spinner spike walls that require you to demodash through them, then you fall into the same room that was after the long falling one
    (also idk if somebody has already commented you about what a demodash is since the most well known instance where it can be performed is back in 3A, but it's basically a dash with Madeline's ducking hitbox. because of the way dashing works there are a couple frames in which it has no specific direction, i think it is in the 5th frame or so that it reads what direction you're pressing, so if you hold down for a few frames, then release and dash in any direction you'll dash with a smaller hitbox, sometimes allowing you to go through spikes since their hitbox is smaller than the sprite would make it seem like. Farewell is the only chapter in the entire game that has a few intentional demodashes, also very generous ones since they made the gaps purposely with many pixels to spare)
    also ah, the timeless arguments between past, present and future selves, can relate to that sentiment and it reminds me of a very specific character from a comic
    26:51 i always found that part really interesting, since up to this point, Celeste has _never_ done something like that, making you take the most obvious path to then trick you into a dead end with little hints in how to actually continue. i see it as a way to tell us the game will no longer "hold our hands" as we play. we got taught the mechanics, we were given plenty of rooms to practice, plenty of scenarios to get used to, now we are on our own
    oh also something funny about there being 4 cassette blocks, this might be just my memory misremembering so somebody correct me if i'm wrong, but i think a few mods already used 4 color cassette blocks _before_ Farewell released, at least i remember vividly a very specific one called Path of Hope which had 4 color blocks
    i find interesting the way that entire checkpoint is made btw, since with cassette rooms most of the time it relays entirely on finding your own pattern, your own timing to know how to work around them, yet very few screens here seem to inspire more for the player to improvise, play while having the pattern in your head so even if what you were trying doesnt work out you can still manage another solution on the fly

      I feel like I encountered the term once before, but it was never explained to me. Another thing to add to the list! I don't know if it goes on the list of things to learn, or the list of things to avoid, but one of the two!
      The Farewell really is a fascinating level start to finish

    Also, congratulations on the room with the huge blocks crushing you, you figured that out really quickly (or at least it looked like it only took you one death), most people struggle with that for a while.

    • @MarchalanCraft
      @MarchalanCraft  2 місяці тому

      I wouldn't say it took me too long to figure it out but it definitely took me more than 1 death. Maybe about 10 minutes of attempts? I had to cut a lot to get 5 hours of footage down to something a little nicer

      March is a 3D model I created in Blender. I didn't know a thing about 3D modeling when I started and followed a lot of tutorials on UA-cam (mostly VR chat related tutorials). Once I managed to get her model made, I exported her to Unity, made her into the right type of Vtubing file, and now I use VSeeFace for the tracking. It was all free to do, but took me a year to get version 1.0 off the ground
