  • Episode 18 of March's very first time playing/seeing Celeste. All she knows is there are strawberries and a mountain but that's not going to stop her from being the best mountain climber she can be!
You wouldn't think it, but getting the back legs correct on the right Marchalan took forever.

With how you took to super dashes, I knew you'd like the rest of Farewell.
Regarding the "sometimes I have a dash, sometimes not" thing, it's a matter of timing.
Your dash refreshes when you're on the ground as early as 11 frames after entering the animation (signaled by Madeline's hair flashing white), leaving you with a 4 frame window to jump (which is free once you get the muscle memory)
8:10 that, my friend, was a spring cancel.
Dashing in most* directions cancels whatever boost you get from (in this case) a spring. It can be a pretty useful trick but taking full advantage of it is an expert level skill.
40:00 I didn't know that backup existed, that's really cool
Also, in today's installment of Stuff That Would Have Been Really Useful a Moment Ago with Michal, we'll be learning about backboosts.
If you're moving with a jelly (or Theo), you can quickly hold backwards, release and hold forward again. If executed right (easy on keyboard, kind of a pain on D pad, really hard on analog), you not only don't lose speed, but also get a boost of up to 40 speed - about the difference between walking and a wall jump.

Ohhh so that's how that works with the dashing! In the video I recorded for next week, I spent forever trying to figure it out and never came close to this 😆
Thanks for the info! It also sounds like that jellyfish thing really would have been useful, but no guarantee I could have pulled it off on my controller. I feel like I'm doing a good job learning the skills, but I'm not particularly gifted with gaming skillz
Still, I'm doing my best 🙂

These rooms are soooo difficult, I get nervous for you every time you get close to beating a room. Very good job at getting this far~!!!
'I put Madeline in the egg again' I wonder if someone knows xDD Love all the little touches in the episode, like the powerpoint transitions, am looking forward to the next episodes of farewell!
You discovering fast falling was just like me finding out I can press A longer to have a bigger jump... I only found out in core after I just couldn't jump over some fire balls.
The path you see at 5:52 is the end of a speedrunner skip, allowing you to ignore all the keys in the section before if you find a creative way to go up without the bubble. Maybe thats a fun puzzle to solve when you try this chapter again, maybe deathless? :p

While I'd never seen Celeste before playing it myself, I'd heard a couple things. Things that definitely made me want to look into it more~ 😁🥚
Ohhhh so that path is something! That explains the starfish friends then. If I ever have to start up the Farewell for a third time, I'd definitely want to look into that

Great work so far. I felt your excitement when you reached the checkpoint, and I was the same when I first got there. This part of the level onward is definitely the most daunting challenge I've done in a 2D platformer, but I know you've got this.
Also... I don't blame you for not knowing about fast-falling. I didn't, either, until I got to that same room with the falling block with the springs. Either way, it's a neat trick. But I think you're doing *really* good, and... As always, I wish you luck with the rest of it.
See you again next Wednesday, March. Have a great rest of your week, and I hope you enjoy the new project.

That room with the fall might have been the screen I spent the longest amount of time on. It took me a really long time to ask that question about holding down. For a while I was trying to dash down to catch it which was very unsuccessful. 😅
The Farewell has really been a test of my persistence, and while the chapter has been rough at times, the excitement of getting past a difficult challenge has made it well worth it.
Thanks for dropping in this week!

I loved how happy you sounded all throughout the episode! You're right to feel acomplished, these rooms, especially the last few rooms, are especially hard (the moving block room is the most infamous room in the entire game and the falling block room is pretty rude because it 'teaches' you to fast fall but it does that at the end of a room (but there's an easter egg hidden in that room so I still love it)
also farewell.ptt ! I love that powerpoint and that music (believe it or not this is the music that plays in the most stressful room in the game)
I hope you fare well against the end of farewell!

    It’s “easy”!
So… this is the part where I gave up. I finished everything except the last screen of 8c and the rest of Farewell.
I don’t have a gaming PC, so I’m unable to press more than 3 buttons on my keyboard. Most of the times I had to cheat by reversing the grab button, so it’s active when I’m not pressing it instead… but I couldn’t really do it with this. And I can’t stop pressing specific buttons so fast, so all this advanced tech just.. doesn’t work. More than one hyper or wave dash in quick succession is pretty much beyond me.
Still, I think that’s a pretty awesome result anyway, for what could be considered a disability 😅
And I definitely have a lot more respect for people who *actually* finish this chapter. You’re a fantastic gamer bun! 😊

3:14 you need to be on the ground for a certain amount of frames (~3 blocks of dashing if you time it right, 4 is safer)
If you download the strawberry jam collab, it has these "gym" levels where they teach you about a bunch of different mechanics
...or you could do the c-sides next (boring (well, I mean, watching you suffer is fun, but still))
also if you ever decide to do the goldens, you could upload just the uncut successful attempt

3:01 OH 0_0 i think to enter that specific speedrun path they expected you to wavedash, yet the technique you performed there (called superdash, basically dashing horizontally on the ground then jumping late enough to regain your dash, yet not _that_ late to lose horizontal momentum) also works perfectly
oh also what you mentioned in 3:56 i think the main reason why it counts as a speedrun path is bc it allows you to go really fast with a very specific technique called ultradash. this one is a little more tricky than any tech shown in the game and than any i mentioned before, but you notice how in that screen there are a couple sections with block plataforms one lower than the other in a descending stairs kinda way? if you wavedash consecutively with the correct timing and height you can keep on building up speed and get really far away (since each dash adds to the acceleration due to the way the game handles this). i think the speed it allows you to take in this screen is not that crazy, but some modded maps like to push this technique to the limit making you reach insane horizontal acceleration, some more difficult maps even to the point of making you clip through spikes or solid ground since it makes you exceed the rendering speed of the game (since by that point Madeline would not even be on-screen anymore. when you go _that_ fast the game camera can't keep up, so everything offscreen has no hitbox yet) (it's a genuinely fun tech to use sometimes tho since not every modded map is _that_ precise and demanding with it considering a slight delay in one of the imputs can affect your entire acceleration)
something funny about the heart barrier there, it's possible to skip it entirely if you're either speedrunning or don't have enough hearts. basically you need to combine the superdash tech and immediately chain it with a wavedash. it's kinda precise, yet possible (but unless you're doing it for the former reason or are replaying the game i'd not recommend it since going straight into Farewell after 8A is a _HUGE_ jump in difficulty) (actually i'd even say Farewell is better experienced after completing _everything else_ there is in the game, including C-sides even since iirc that was originally what they had planned, yet decided to make the barrier just require A and B sides at the end)
28:38 you might be more powerful than you realize perhaps >w<
oh btw 37:36 an easier way to that one screen is jumping out of the cloud as soon as you touch it (that way you dont get any momentum from it, it's basically like jumping from a regular floor) then dashing
fun fact: if you fly to the left exactly here 42:12 instead of following the bird there is a pretty weird (and lowkey cursed) easter egg room nicknamed the Kevin room. there even is another respawnable feather there to go back to the intented path afterwards. it has literally no purpose, there is no reason for it to exist, it's just funny
oh also btw there exist a death counter mod if you're interested on that. it keeps track of your deaths in real time while playing ^u^
(also also hope your index finger is better) (as in this was days ago yeah but still)

    • @MarchalanCraft
      @MarchalanCraft  Місяць тому +1

My finger feels fine for the most part. It's after 2-3 hours of repetitive motion I start to feel it. But I think that's largely because of the wavebird. That trigger button takes a lot to use! Thanks for asking, and for the neat comment. I have so many hours in this game now but it feels like I still have so much to learn. I'm not sure I'll be practicing anything meant for speed runners though 😁

It's not that, you don't ultra through that route for speed. The reason it's a speedrun route is due to the fact it skips multiple rooms

    • @BUGFlower413
      @BUGFlower413 7 днів тому

@@idkcba isn't it for both reasons tho :? as in it does skip plenty of rooms so it's less to go through, yet it also allows to perform a few ultras for speed
