I had a bunch of #scrapwood piling up in the shop, and I wanted to make something useful out of it. So I put together a quick coffee table. I wanted it to have a minimalist #MidCenturyModern feel while still being a quick #DIY project. It was a really fun project, and I'm really happy with how it came out.

After months of waiting for another desk, ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMAlHv7-BBWMrPRm5-uEoD6rtdT7SG2Qr I finally canceled the order and went with the Belleze black and gold. It fits perfectly in my office and the drawers are a nice feature (keeps the clutter off my desk for more room to work!) It's modern but sophisticated. My husband got it assembled in less than an hour. The only negative is that it leaves prints! I wound up complementing it with a large desk mat/mouse pad (which also helps to prevent scratches) so no more fingerprints! Overall a nice desk for the cost!
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
I love how having that piece of flatsawn oak at the front gives you view of the nebulary rays along the front edge of the piece. Really cool placement choice.
I wish i could say it was intentional...but it's just a happy mistake :)
I really love the way this turned out. It's also incredibly helpful to see how you adapt when you run into a problem; I think I learn even more from the mistakes than I do from the perfect projects. Thank you!
Thanks Monica...that's true of building the projects with mistakes too
The minimalist woodworker. Great project.
Beautiful work Chris. This video really speaks to why your channel is so great. Your a great story teller, with a refreshing eye for design, and your not afraid to show your mistakes instead of showing us how to make a drawer box for the 800th time. Keep it up man.
Haha. Thanks man. Maybe next time I’ll purposely mess up on some drawer boxes so I can do both 😃
Human element is what makes it great those little imperfections you can tell it was hand made not made in a factory somewhere else in the world , great job
Very nice project. Thank you for pointing out your "mistakes". Many people do not talk about it. This is very helpful for everybody. This is the we all learn: from mistakes.
I am glad, that I am not the only one, having sometimes trouble in woodworking. Normally we see only perfect projects. Thanks for sharing this, makes me feel better 😉
Most definitely. Every project has it's issues :)
I think its beautiful......scrap wood never looked any better.....really nice project.....
thanks, man. You may not know how much you teach inspire and encourage with your videos but you do and I appreciate you. I love you man.
Thanks Darin...right back at ya :)
Thanks for showing the mistakes. I think it is a very nice looking coffee table...even for scraps! I really did not expect you to attach the top like that after you cut the rabbet around the outside. It gave it a nice floating look.
Thanks Bruce :)
Thanks for posting this video, Chris. It is amazing to see that even very skilled woodworkers make mistakes and work around them.
Trust me...I'm always making mistakes :)
Definitely does not look like scrap. Really nice piece.
My usual comment of loving your video, and the podcast this week was great. Loved the honest talk of “selling out”. Eventhough there’s more sponsors in your videos, I don’t think it detracts from your videos whatsoever. I personally like knowing what companies see the opportunity to work with a great creator and jump on it.
I think it all lies in the viewer, assuming we're not doing something crazy. If I was trying to get people to buy things I knew were no good that would be one thing. But like I said in the podcast, I'm selective with the brands I work with...and if I work with them I stand behind them. I try to keep it of value to the viewer, even though I know they aren't the most interesting part of the video...but it enables me to keep the train rolling. So the people who like the show and want to see me do more...they understand that, and are in turn happy to see the sponsors roll in. Keeps things free :)
As others have said, you are refreshingly honest. Almost makes me feel human after all, with the wood working mistakes I make. Thks again.
When i grow up i want to be just like Chris! I will be 40 in Feb so theres still hope :)
Great build yet again mate well done.
we're pretty close to the same age then :)
Love the use of scraps to make larger pieces instead of cuttingboards! I may have to R&D this (Rip off & Duplicate) haha
I've always wondered what that stood for :)
Thanks for posting this video.
Echo comments about being human/honest. Thanks for including your mess ups, I have some really silly ones all the time myself. Makes it feel more normal
not a project goes by where I don't mess at least one thing up. Usually more.
I really love this piece. I know you said its not your best, but honestly, I love the contrast and pattern. Been looking at different ideas for a coffee table, but I think this is the one I want to try. Also nice to see you being a human and seeing how you overcome your mistakes. These are very helpful for us mortals.
Thanks Vic...it was a fun one to build...and it really did come out better than I had anticipated.
I wish some of the "DIY" tutorials didn't all start out with putting wood through a jointer and planer.
Do it with a hand jointer then if you dont have one. I dont have any power tools but still manage to make things.
Joel Veal can you make a video showing Tim his table being made without power tools? I would watch that for sure.
Ya they should make videos using no tools, only their hands
Thank You, I always enjoy how well you perceive the value of materials.
I just discovered your channel and I just need to say how amazing it is. Not only is your work incredible but the editing and style of the vids are so good. I don’t really have words. You should be so proud of everything.
Thanks Grimsey...appreciate it! Hope you like the other videos as much :)
I really like your ability to think outside the box Chris. Your projects always turn out great and enjoyable videos as well.
Thanks Jb B...appreciate that :)
I try to, but not for the sake of just being different.
Awesome table!!
I like it and plan to make a smaller version for myself.
Cool vid. First timer. Awesome transition into ad. Lol.
Wow...perfect tools as well as work shop. Great!!!
I really liked the discussion of your mistakes and thought process. Awesome narrative and beautiful shots/editing as always!
Thanks Yelrom - there were plenty of mistakes so it really made sense for this one.
Thanks Chris, for showing awesome craftmanship. All done without hustle and bustle. It's very relaxing to watch. Greetings from Germany. :)
Thanks Mecky...and greetings from the US :)
Nice looking piece and some great ideas for everyone. I like the 1x, 2x, 3x,4x idea very clever it's a bit like the Americans love for cups in cookery.
♫ Scrapwood challenge. Scrapwood challenge. It's scrap. It's… oh, sorry, wrong channel.
ha ha...I thought the same thing for a minute.
Ooooh! Pask makes! I had to think there for a minute
Excellent reuse of excess or leftover materials. It is a beautiful piece. You come up with some creative ideas with each video.
Thanks Steve...appreciate it :)
this is one of the only videos that actually made sense for that giant scraps i had...
I really enjoyed this video. I have been playing around with designs that have separation (or perceived separation) between the top and the base. I think the distance between the short-side apron and the top looks really cool.
yeah...those little touches go a long way in a design I think. They really bring it to a new level where it doesn't just look like pieces nailed together.
Love it! Just started listening to you, Ben, and Mike’s podcast from the very beginning! Your videos are great! Love the narration that you give, it’s uniquely you. I’m about 11 episodes in now!
The craziest part about it, is hearing y’all talk about what you are working on, and having already seen most of your videos if not all of them, and then hearing you talk about them before you even made them is such a unique feature I get to enjoy now, and couldn’t enjoy if I’d been following your podcast from the beginning lol! Keep up the great work!!
Nice...it's like you're time traveling :)
I love weeks when you drop a deuce, Chris! I really hope anyone that reads this comment also listens to the podcast ha! Really great build and video as always!
haha...yeah, otherwise we'll have some confused people in the comments section :)
I literally just watched/listened your video to relax my anxiety Chris! Thanks for the vid.
Love seeing something a bit more ad hoc. Nice use of scrap for sure.
It was a pro bono build. Not really. Just wanted to get in on the jargon :)
Good video. Your videos make sense and are relaxing after a long day of work. Keep the good work.
Thanks
Ezequiel
Thanks Ezequiel :)
I felt that table looked like some designer item
I like it - even though there is no crazy angles, it still is very nice piece. I mean from scrap to this - great outcome!
Thanks Justyna...I was really pleased with it :)
Nice Cubs hat Chris
Must be nice having access to all the gear in a massive workshop.
The new work space looks great . I really enjoy watching your videos , they are fun and inspiring and your presentation and narration is very calming . Keep it up !
Thanks man...the space is coming along. Still organizing though.
Sempre intrressanti le tue realizzazioni, complimenti.
Fortunato ad avere negli USA quei bei legni.
First video of yours that I have seen. Very nice editing and woodworking. Thank you
Your videos are so calming, I love it.
Awesome build Chris!
Give yourself some more credit bro. It looks amazing. Love it!
Thanks man...i was pretty happy with it :)
Saturday morning routine: coffee, your video, check emails. Keep up the work man, love your style video.
Thanks Mike...glad to be a part of your complete breakfast :)
Love your videos Chris. Relaxing to watch with great ideas.
Thanks Kieran...appreciate it!
I need to start making bigger projects so I can have that much scrap wood... This would be a blast to build
haha...good point. The bigger the project the bigger the leftovers.
Thanks Chris always great vids...its great to use up scrap productively. I recently used up most of mine.
there is a good feeling about it. Kind of like making something from nothing :)
Nice job 👍
I think this is really great! Good way to save good wood and you get a different design every time. Maybe you could do more of these as like a series of tables?
Please make more scrap pieces. This was great!
Have you ever been watching one of your favorite channles that make coffe tables and just think. "Were the hell do they put all these tables"
I like the the *crap* in scrap being bold in the thumbnail lmao
Thats amazing. 👏
why have i been binge watching this channel knowing that i live in a dorm room in a major city with no access to wood or power tools and lack the funds to make any of this stuff.... super cool table btw
Great looking table!
It's a beautiful coffee table, Chris!
Thanks Jolien...I was pretty happy with it :)
thanks new concept vids "the wrong way to do" ;)😃😉
this table is so cool! you and your videos are pretty cool too. so glad i found this channel 😄
Thanks Oliver...I'm glad you found me too :)
Great job making use of what you have in stock
G'day from Australia mate awesome work mate looks amazing sometimes some of the best projects I've ever done have been from scrap wood but that's just in my opinion I'm the same never throw out any wood because I'll always use some day keep up the good work cheers
This project came out beautifully, man. Good work and great improvisation after a few unexpected turns :)
Thanks AJ. I was happy with it :)
Love the way the table turned out. Beautiful. : ) Looks like you are enjoying your new shop space.
Thanks! Yeah, it's coming along. I'll be enjoying it even more once I get my next project done. Then I can really start organizing things. I love the extra space...I do get kind of lonely there though, if I'm being honest.
Really nice coffee table!! There is nothing "scrap" about this! Please, have you thought about mass producing this. It is a work of art.
- Very nicely done ! ! !
man i love these videos
Glad you're enjoying them :)
Incredible work man!
Thank you. Really appreciate it :)
From scratch to hatch! Nicely done, man! :)
Thanks :)
Great Table Project from scrap, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
hey chris, this may sound like a weird question, but... i love the way walnut looks BEFORE it's stained and varnished. i'm planning to use walnut for some shelves i'm making, but i'd love it if there were a way to finish and protect the wood while keeping that unfinished, dusty, matte-like look. any ideas? thanks so much for these videos...
A bit late here but anyway... Im not expert but im pretty sure that if the wood is indoors you don't need any finish to protect it
It's so beautiful
You produce phenomenal content! Have you ever considered a process video that discusses order of operations and why?
Thanks
i think you can build the base with half joints, with out dado or inserts. The table top migh tend to bow over time ?
That’s the BIGGEST piece of sCRAP I’ve ever seen!
Nice job.
For reals. Though I’m thinking of making an even bigger one.
Thank you for pixelating the picture. good use of scrape. Im terrible for keep hold of scrap wood but mines just pine from pallet wood i imagine if i got some decent hard wood i would also keep the saw dust from it....
yeah. I actually want to build something for holding all of the smaller pieces that are more likely to get tossed
Cool table!
Thanks :)
It looks great
I am from Indonesia,l like you video's
l have subscribed you chanel
Good job friends 👍
Hi Cris
How are you?
Well, I watch all your videos and all your projects are amazing and beautiful too.
I am Mechanic of the Aircraft and I love this hobby.
Congratulations by channel.
Allan from Brazil
Thanks Allan. I appreciate it. Greetings from the US
Scrap wood? Over here in UK, we'd kill for "scrap" like that. Nice work tho' :)
Im going to be doing this with barn wood as a shelf. Do you suggest putting small nails in or anything to help with strength? Ill be glue two sets where they are ontop of each other then glue those to the side of each other.
Well done!
Love it something made from nothing fantastic video as always thankyou keep them coming
Thanks Russell...yeah, I really like that element too. makes it feel like a bonus project.
Los mejores proyectos en madera 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Like your videos mate, but! Your good enough to do stepped tenons and mortice joints.
Love the work 👍
Nice project. The quality of your video is awesome. Nice work as always.
Thanks Jason...appreciate it!
Sorry I know this is 4 years ago but... Any chance you still know the rough dimensions for this? I got thickness of leg, stretchers, aprons and top form the video, but not length and width. Really liking the look and feel of dimensions in this build!
Very nice piece!!
Beard is coming in good too!
yeah, I feel like it's almost time for a shave
It look's awesome! I wish i could build stuff like that, but sadly i have no money for all the tech.
You could buy a table saw from Craigslist for $100 and build something like this. All the fancy tools just make things go more quickly.
You don't have to have any power tools at all to make this table. An assortment of hand tools would work just fine. Take a look here on youtube and you will find a variety of woodworkers who use only inexpensive hand tools. Take a look at third coast craftsmen. He sometimes uses only hand tools.
I thought it came out just fine. The only thing I would do is round over the tops edge
Sweet table.
