I just put one of these babies on my '99 Softail Custom, replacing the stock CV carb. That booger fired right up like it's never done before. Still dialing in the mixture, but I'm super impressed so far. I used this vid along w/ the instruction package that came with the kit. For the manifold part I used an extended ball-end 1/4" Allen on the right side only to get them snug; The clearances/ angles were too steep to tighten them both all the way. I used a regular 4" Allen ground down about 1/4" for the rest of that work. To get to the two carb bolts around the other side I had to drop the horn and bracket w/ the VOES/ choke. No special tools were used for the project. Thanks for the presentation.
These videos are brilliant. I've recently bought a 98 Evo 1340, fitted with an S and S carb, which was running rich on tickover. The set up video assisted me to cure the problem.
Thanks for posting this video. I bought a '97 WG two months ago with a S&S (E) carb on the bike. This "should" help me fine tune the carb better knowing how it functions on these models.
@SSCycleInc I have a 99 Nighttrain with a super E installed but they didn't have those breather bolts they just had an Allen head so I've been looking for the ones in the video but every place said they don't fit my bike so I just want to make sure
Hey I’ve got a question regarding where the cables connect to the carb the throttle cable , not the return one, has a larger end brass part attached to the cable compared to the rear return cable , and the top side where the cables connect to the throttle itself . I’m wondering if it’s not the right end . Is it supposed to slide into the channel the same way it does on the other connections ? Hopefully this makes sense . It’s so much easier with pictures . I’m working in a 91 custom softail
I know the answer but want to double check. On the breather fittings does the flat/larger opening side go against the head? I am sure it does, but want to double check. Thanks
Hi, I already installed the hi-4n s & s ignition and the harley worked on the first attempt. I have an evolution from 1998. I would like to ask two questions: 1- After the ignition is installed, can I try different advance rates? or do I have to always calibrate from the beginning by putting the piston in tdc? 2- If black smoke comes out of the exhaust from time to time, is it a tunning ignition problem, or the carburetor? Thank you
can i fit carbs on my 2012 electra glide and get red of the efi ?? and do i need a new manifold and what are your sugestions parts wise the bike cought fire and i wired every thing the old way and want to get stand alone coils and carbs and get red of injuction and ecm
+Skepticynic We may be getting confused by semantics (we call the throttle guide toward the air cleaner the rear throttle guide) or it may be the fact that the throttle shaft and butterfly in an S&S carb rotates in the opposite direction from the shaft in a stock carb.
+S&S Cycle, Inc That seems strange that you'd consider the manifold side of the carb as the front! Nonetheless, you rush through that portion of the vid with very little detail. I was installing my super e on my '99 XLH1200C as I was watching the vid. Needless to say, I had to remove the carb and switch cables. If you could remake or edit the vid to show that procedure better, I think it will benefit countless viewers as well as boost the consumers perception of your expertise and professionalism.
I'm restoring a '92 FatBoy and the S&S E went on today. The rear of the bracket for the horn, choke, gas line and VOS doesn't clear the intake manifold. It looks in the video like you have the VOS free standing on a short section of vacuum line. If that's the case, my problem is solved. Also, the throttle cables are tight up against the bottom of the tank where they come out of the bracket. Will this lead to a problem or is this normal. Thanks for posting this video. It is a great help!
Yes, we connected the VOES with a short piece of hose and you can generally zip tie it to the frame or something close to it. The switch is really light so it doesn't need a lot of support. The cables touching the tank should not be a problem unless they are kinked. No sharp bends!
Hello Bruce, I purchased a beautiful 98 Springer softail that had a Hyper charger on it, the look was terrible and so was the performance so I purchased a S&S Super E shorty installed it myself with your help and the directions that came with it and I am very pleased, I have dialed it in to my ear but I will be taking it to Tilly HD in Statesville N.C. for a Dyno run to fine tune it, my only concern at this point is that there appears to be about a 1/2 inch slack in the return cable ?, the throttle snaps back as it should but when I adjust the slack out of the return cable the throttle tightens up, is the slack in the return cable normal, Thanks and l really appreciate the videos its great free education !!
+Tim Pope There has to be some slack in the cables to allow them to move freely, but 1/2" seems like a lot. Have you lubed your cables? Try some of that spray lube and one of those dandy little cable oiling widgets. The other thing to look for is a kink or sharp bend in the cable routing. If you can't get it to work right, have Tilly's look at it when you take it in for your dyno run. It never hurts that get another set of eyes on it!
Rode the WG about 10 miles yesterday and the carb was leaking gas out the overflow tube while the bike was running. Switched the bike off and carb still leaking. Turning the fuel valve off is the only way to stop the steady flow of gas going out the tube. WG parked for now. Any helpful comments ? Thanks, Butch.
There is obviously a problem with the fuel inlet needle and seat, but there are a lot of things that can cause that. First thing of course, is don't run it like that! You can check to see that there isn't some foreign material preventing the needle from seating (did you just paint your tank), or if for some reason, the float is sticking in the up position. Your best bet is to call our tech dept at 608-627-1497 and let our tech guys help you sort this out. They can talk you through way more possibilities in a 5 minute phone call than we can do in a week of comments on UA-cam. Yes! these guys really are that good!
I noticed the last three screws for the S&S air filter chrome cover did not have any loctite or threadlocker applied to them. Other videos have mentioned to use it on those screws. How important is it for those screws to have some threadlocker applied or is it even necessary?
It's an VERY good idea to use threadlocker on those screws. Consider it mandatory. I've used red Loctite since the 1980s on Bs and later E's. On the B you can drill straight through the standoff because the back of the air filter housing is flat and use through bolts with lock nuts (lock washers are trash, ask NASA).. It would be nice if the areas on the E housing were flat to permit that. Hint, hint....
I have a 94 FLHTCU and have an Arlen Ness air breather and custom cover. Is there a way to use them on this carb swap or not? Thank you and great video. The humor justs add to the awesome job. "Steimi"
Assuming your aircleaner is set up for stock carb, it would not bolt to the S&S carb. We'd definitely recommend a fresh teardrop! www.sscycle.com/1994/Harley-Davidson/Electra-Glide-FLHTC/#category=1%7CAir%20Cleaners
We assume that you are referring to the enrichment device that you pull up for starting. You can get that at any S&S dealer. Check the dealer locator on our website at www.sscycle.com for a dealer near you. If you have a Super B or D carb you will need to buy the whole assembly. The part number is 11-2084, and if it's a Super E or G carb you can just replace the spring the part number for the spring is 11-2340.
Just bought a 92 FatBoy with an S&S Super E (my first S&S) it has the breather heads, and the breather fittings that the hose goes on move freely, that doesn't seem right. Shouldn't they be tight? I've watch some of your videos and I'm very impressed, might buy an S&S for my RK
It should be tight. We suggest calling our tech dept at 608-627-1487. Those guys can certainly get you straightened out, or tightened up (as the case may be).

It certainly can be done. It's just an exercise in plumbing. There are even kits you can buy. The question is why do you want to. If there is oil vapor coming out of the crankcase breather, why not just send it through the engine to get rid of it. On the other hand, a lot of oil out of the breather is probably a symptom of another problem that requires attention. You could call our tech dept for some suggestions. 608-627-1497.
