best breakdown description so far. I have a random intermittent cough and then stall at idle frustrating but this info will help but I was looking for best jetting sizes to run to fix issues..
I've been having some problems getting things back together without leaking after a rebuild (it sat for ten years). What leaks is the accelerator pump. In the video you touched on AP reassembly but skirted the issue I'm having. It's all well and good to say that the diaphragm lip goes into the circular slot/groove in the "cover" plate but having the spring in there means that the diaphragm will not sit down and stay in the slot and you don't really know whether it's in there or not till you reassemble the whole thing and put gas in it. It's no fun when it doesn't seal correctly. I was looking for tips on exactly how to reassemble the AP but haven't found any. I'll get it eventually I suppose.
I think I got it - it's not leaking now. I took a close look at the diaphragm that came with the rebuild kit and compared it to the original that I still had (it was still soft and flexible so I kept it as a spare). The old, original, diaphragm was a little bit larger than the new one, not a lot but it was perceptible with the eye. So I used the original. With the float bowl off the carb, the accelerator pump rod passage was open so I passed a second rod (hanger wire) through there, picked up the diaphragm hub with it, kept the spring compressed and the diaphragm lip in the groove while withdrawing the rod and simultaneously lowering the cover plate onto the bowl. Worked like a charm.
wash the diaphram in soapy water. then smother it with rubber grease or bulb grease or vasaline or spark plug boot lubricant or silicone spray or window gasket lubricant on the diapbram... take yout time, make sure the spring is hidden from view and the lip gets into the groove (like Madonna) and seat it nicely minimal amount please. coat only to preven rubber from cracking in the future
Thanks for this vid. I built a custom intake, and forgot about the bowl vent. Been trying to tune my carb and kept upping the size of the main jet because of engine cut out at higher rpms. I think I was just starving the carb of fuel due to a blocked bowl vent. I can't wait to remedy this tomorrow and see if I've got the problem licked. I'll update this comment tomorrow night......if I remember. 🙄
@@justinrobinson5267 I didn't remember, did I. 😒 No, it wasn't the problem, although I still needed to unobstructed the vent. I'm embarrassed to say that I was oversized on the main jet and headed in the wrong direction. I stepped back to a .070 and ultimately ended up at .072. Runs like a champ. Clearing the bowl vent was the right thing to do, but not the primary issue.
@@tstephen951 Similar problem with my Super B. Put it down to dirt as the tank filter screen was filthy and there was some dirt in the float bowl. Mine would die every mile then restart ok. Better now but not as good as it used to be.
Is the the fast idle tube (0381F) needed on an older Super E ? I've been riding my 93 sporty without one. Opened it up to clean and noticed it was missing. I know the older carbs don't have a main jet air bleed and didn't know if that coincided with that? Thanks in advance.
I have a s&s super e on my shovel head. Worked fine when i got bike out of shop ita a 79 shovel. Now when i ride it it idles fine but when i start riding it it seems lile its starving for fuel spits and sputters. What could be the issue? It has inline filter brand new screen in the tank is fine not plugged up brand new also im at a loss and its driving me nuts!
Do they come with the float needle installed or do I need to buy that? Also do I need to still get a new fuel inlet since my current is leaking? Or is there one installed
I hear everyone talk about this rich spot when main jet comes online but I continue to have a lean dip from pilot jet to main jet. I have tons of jets. I’ve tryd so many combos. I know I’m not the only one with this problem. Fully build sportster 1275 big bore with every bell an whistle. What can I do to lose this LEAN dip from transition from pilot to main. I hear about need to go bigger air bleed. But again I do NOT have a RICH dip. Best I’ve gotten is 36 pilot 68 main 120 thunder jet. Any help would be gold. Thanks to whome ever. Plugs read beautiful
My injector nozzle in the float bowl is bent slightly. Is this a press fit/replaceable tube or can I just bend it back and how critical is it to be straight up and down?
Yes It absolutely can be. Depending on what air cleaner set up you are running save yourself the aggravation and take the couple min to remove the air cleaner to allow yourself the room. I run E series on both my EVO and TC88 w/ S&S teardrop air cleaner and backing plate. Note: u will need a stubby flathead screwdriver or equivalent to access the screws.
Super E on a 83 shovel. I changed the exhaust from drag pipes to slip-ons. However, now on decel, I am getting the popping sound on the exhaust. I've tried changing the main jet with no change. The intermediate jet is .095. I have the older style carb with no main jet air bleed. Spark plug inspection look like I am running rich. Bike runs great. Good fuel mileage. The popping sound is driving me nuts. Lots of suggestion about adding more fuel during decel. How do you do that? Idle mixture screw adjustment, change intermediate jet.
I had bought an S S shorty carb for my 71 Shovelhead. But there was no gas accelerator rod. One of my mc bro gave me a rod. I put it on and it's about a quarter inch short.. Also, when I open the throttle ,the rod doesn't move at all. What's missing
Hey guys! Sorry I don’t know where else to ask you this but you guys are my most reliable source haha! I can get a 86-03 sportster thunderheader for a very very good price (350$) but I own a sportster 2008. If I weld O2 bungs for my sensors would it work on my bike ?
I own a 95 Sportster 1200 and installed the S&S SuperE. It dies at higher speeds, up hills, and on the freeway, is this a jetting issue? should I go up in size? Pilot and main jet or just one?
@@dudleydorite7678 hey thanks for replying, i meant to write Super E. But i fixed the issue. Thank you for your response. I appreciate the time you took.
Hello, I have a 2003 Sportster 1200 , 100years special edition. I'm having a problem when driving it ( it misfire every so often, but if I leave the choack open just a little, it doesn't do it) How can I fix this problem?
Howdy J&P Cycles - it sounds to me - on the surface - that BOTH of these S&S Carbs Type-E & Type-G are too B I G to begin with at 48mm & 52mm ... on an 80ci EVO engine with the KEHIN CV-40 being 39mm & MIKUNI at 42mm COOP ........................................
Brilliant description and advice, I will be coming back to view this video again. Cheers

Main Jet sometimes won't come loose from the emulsion tube..what happens then? You have to remove the float bowl.😩
Would you still tune into the electronic program ?
No, carbureted bikes don't use fuel injection controllers. They have a carburetor.

So the accelerator pump has two ball bearings
How do I get my idol screw from moving by itself when bike is on ....is there a,washer on the screw

You will probably also have to fab up a new rear exhaust hanger.

go with an E carburetor unless you are putting out some serious horsepower
