Interviewer: "So Bob, who would be your favorite singer these days?" Dylan (smiling): "Well, that would have to be Van, I mean, wouldn't it?". In Bob We Trust. Van is the Man.
Too bad they don't list the musicians on these releases. I recognized Elvin but couldn't put a name to the face anymore and didn't feel like digging through stacks of old vinyl just to figure out who I was watching.
Just noticed that is Mickey Thomas (Jefferson Starship lead vocalist) and his backup vocalist from Elvin Bishop's lead vocalist from "Fooled Around and Fell In Love" are singing backups on this performance.
Absolutely love Van Morrison! Reliving my preteen through early adult years via Midnight Special when we were fortunate to have been blessed with real artists and musicians! Rock on everyone!
Fell in love with Van Morrison’s voice, when, as a young teen, I heard “Gloria”. Later, in the best summer ever, “Brown-eyed Girl” was my theme song. His deep album cuts are so soulful and evocative. Van The Man Forever.
This version is all about the Elvin Bishop band doing their thing with one of the great troubadours of our lifetime. Elvin in the final minute just lights that fire
I love that at about 2:45 he looks at the horn section and sings their part and then they NAIL IT with the chords! It became a chill jam and then Van say's, "BRING IT UP!" and it starts kicking Butt until the end. Pro Musicians like that are amazing!
Ive always loved Vans music and as a performer he was one of the most interesting performers of the 70s. He had a unique stage presence in a good way !
How good do you have to be to have Mickey Thomas singing your backup and Elvin Bishop lending a little blues guitar? This is wonderful. Always loved Van Morrison. "Crazy Love" is one of my all time favorites.
Absolutely! Van Morrison with Elvin Bishop, Reni Slais & Mickey Thomas Melvin Seals: piano Donny Baldwin: drums, percussion Elvin Bishop: guitar Johnny 'V' Vernazza: guitar, backing vocals Michael Brooks: bass Horn Section: , Billy Slais, Tom Poole and the late Jerry McKinney.
@@AMEER-114- Never occurred to me before listening here, but this could easily be the E-Street band backing the Vanman. Bruce did not have as many horns back then, but this was the sound he seemed to be aiming at (IMHO).
Vans looking real good in this period! Still pretty fit, inspired records,...not quite as pissed off at the world... Love Van, LOVE! But I do wish my man had a little more chill and enjoyed it more.
They were also on the program? If you've followed this channel for very long, you will have noticed many "dream collaborations" (e.g. Bee Gees and Jerry Lee Lewis, Bee Gees and Wilson Pickett, Journey and Herbie Hancock, Little Feat w/ Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt, etc.).
Having been in Van's position myself (at a much smaller level), I can see he is just trying to get through this song with as much dignity as he can hold together. The Guitar players are playing so loud that he needs to hold his right ear closed to hear himself sing on pitch. Also, the guitar players are overplaying big time and can't play an R&B song to save their lives! Im willing to bet the background singers are not his usual vocalists either (probably Don Kirshner house vocalists ) because they are not harmonizing with him work a dam. You can see It all just sucks the life out of his performance and what you have is just a complete lack of enthusiasm. Poor Van , so very talented! ( I bet he would want to burn this video, but I guess we are lucky to have it!)
The musicians are Elvin Bishop and Elvin Bishop Band. The legendary Mickey Thomas is the male backing singer with Reni Simon (Slais) next to him; also part of the Elvin Bishop Band.
Interviewer: "So Bob, who would be your favorite singer these days?" Dylan (smiling): "Well, that would have to be Van, I mean, wouldn't it?". In Bob We Trust. Van is the Man.
I see Elvin Bishop and Mickey Thomas helped out here. Great music and great artists.
Mickey Thomas could blow him out of the water.
Too bad they don't list the musicians on these releases. I recognized Elvin but couldn't put a name to the face anymore and didn't feel like digging through stacks of old vinyl just to figure out who I was watching.
It's the Elvin Bishop Band with Van as a guest singer.
good eye
Interesting. Didn't know this.
Just noticed that is Mickey Thomas (Jefferson Starship lead vocalist) and his backup vocalist from Elvin Bishop's lead vocalist from "Fooled Around and Fell In Love" are singing backups on this performance.
It looks like Elvin & his whole band backing up Van!
Van Morrison and Joe Cocker were the most unlikely looking rock stars yet they could get in stage and mumble the phone book and it would be amazing
😁Absolutely Agree!!!😎
You absolutely get it! 🥰
Haha, great analogy!!!
So true!
Good morning, elvin bishop and van Morrison and a couple other people in the mix I see, wonderful way to wake up
This is better than the recorded version. I love the guitar riffs in this performance.
Some of the live versions on TMS are better than the studio versions of these songs.
Elvin Bishop on guitar for this Midnight Special!!!! (and Mickey Thomas backing vocals!!!!!!!!
I concur
Absolutely love Van Morrison! Reliving my preteen through early adult years via Midnight Special when we were fortunate to have been blessed with real artists and musicians! Rock on everyone!
I am in awe. I am in tears. The combination of genius singing, songwriting and performing-unreal! And damn, that man could put a band together!
Fell in love with Van Morrison’s voice, when, as a young teen, I heard “Gloria”. Later, in the best summer ever, “Brown-eyed Girl” was my theme song. His deep album cuts are so soulful and evocative. Van The Man Forever.
Reni Slais is the female singer next to Mickey Thomas.
Indeed!
Thanks
Seriously .... Van Morrison is a superstar at another level then most musicians !
Exactly, Van doesn’t have a persona or dress to impress. He doesn’t care what people think of him! He is revered for his talent over 7 decades
More Van please.
I looked this up in an episode guide. That's the only song he did in it. There might not be anymore. Bummer.
Correction: Elvin Bishop and Van did the song "Help Me" together. I guess that's a Van Morrison song?
This version is all about the Elvin Bishop band doing their thing with one of the great troubadours of our lifetime. Elvin in the final minute just lights that fire

Van the man
Ive always loved Vans music and as a performer he was one of the most interesting performers of the 70s. He had a unique stage presence in a good way !
He still has!
Oh I bet that was great in person!! Van is an amazing singer who looks like the guy next door! 😎✌️
Just one of many great bands backing Van through the decades!
Please more music videos of him.
There are hundreds on UA-cam...
Van the Man.
Didn't expect to see Mickey Thomas up there!
I thought that sure looked like him.
Mickey was with Elvin Bishop at the time (Fooled Around and Fell in Love).
Look how that cigarette stayed so comfortably in the last fret of the guitar oh nice and warm 😊
FRIGGIN GREAT!
My Belfast Brother,my Soul brother Eternally.
Wow, amazing live version with Bishop!!!
With the great Mickey Thomas on backing vocals! and his bandmate of the time Elvin Bishop on guitar.
Fabulous. Van is great, the band and backing singers are too. Thanks for posting. From Northern Ireland 👍
Thanks for listening all the way in Ireland
This is Elvin Bishop's band. What a powerful moment in live music. Van actually seemed happy here. He even made some eye contact with the audience.
Man having Elvin Bishop Mickey Thomas and Reni Salas on this makes it even more amazing
Lets not leave out Elvins 2nd guitarist on the Strat as Johnny Vernazza. Great player & the main rhythm end on this fine performance.
How good do you have to be to have Mickey Thomas singing your backup and Elvin Bishop lending a little blues guitar? This is wonderful. Always loved Van Morrison. "Crazy Love" is one of my all time favorites.
Who's the woman vocalist?
@@TheZavlor Her name is Reni Slais. She sang along with Mickey on "Fooled Around and Fell In Love" also.
@@janicetrimmell6897thank you. She soared!
The whole Moondance album !!
02:48 my fave part is hearing Van call out the horn lines.
Back when you could smoke on TV. Band is smokin too!
The good old days when we went out Friday night and wreaked of booze and cigarette smoke in the morning!
Is that Elvin Bishop on guitar?🎸
Absolutely!
Van Morrison with Elvin Bishop, Reni Slais & Mickey Thomas
Melvin Seals: piano
Donny Baldwin: drums, percussion
Elvin Bishop: guitar
Johnny 'V' Vernazza: guitar, backing vocals
Michael Brooks: bass
Horn Section: , Billy Slais, Tom Poole and the late Jerry McKinney.
Yes
@@GaryT1952 Thanks for the info. Mighty helpful.👍🤘
Wow, some Starship alum. Well, everybody starts out somewhere.
Excellent!
I remember watching these Midnight Specials featuring Van. Loved the performances.
i hope they got more than one song out of him! cant wait for more....
I see you Reni Slais!
And a familiar group of NorCal musicians🤘😎🤘
I have to think such a song and arrangement had an influence on Springsteen.
That's a fact...
The record of this came out in "70 or "71...
Way before Bruce first recorded for Columbia in late 72 or early 73

Elvin Bishop!!!

Love Van, LOVE! But I do wish my man had a little more chill and enjoyed it more.
Fantastic as always
If you buy a new album by Van Morrison it sounds just as good or even better than his early work. He is amazing!
YEEEESSSS! Thank you, 'The Midnight Special'! Thank you, Burt Sugarman! Say hi to Mary, for us!
Will do!
More Van the Man please!
I see Reni Slais is singing backup with Mickey Thomas.
Gotta love the bell bottoms.
He used to be so good and sensible
Van the Man with Elvin Bishop band - does it get any better?
Greatness! Is that Elvin Bishop on guitar?
We built this city on dominoes.
W O W !!!!!!!!
To this day , at wedding receptions, it is sacrilegious not to play Van Morrison music.
Anyone know the story as to why Morrison was performing with the Elvin Bishop Band?

Mickey Thomas is singing backup?
exactly what I was thinking.
Who's the chick singing with Micky Thomas
Is this basically the Elvin Bishop Group backing Van?
Yes.
VAN FUCKING MORRISON
omg that's Elvin bishop....??!!
Whos the chic singing backup?
I think Van originated the mic drop
Domino delivers in thirty minutes or it’s free.
Great song....didn't understand a word he sang though.
I LOVE Van but is it just me that thinks he mumbles a lot of his vocals? 😂

So? It's live music. Get over it.
