Hey everyone, I'm back. Every single time I watch this, I think back to when I had just returned from the war in Vietnam. Geeez, life was so good ~ I had MADE IT! I came back from the worse place, including hell, that a human being could have been sent to. I had my '70 (but new) Plymouth Roadrunner, pistol grip 4-speed and 8 track banging in the dash. I love this song, I love Van Morrison but, more than all of it, I love the memory of how alive & happy I was to be home. GREAT memories!!!!!
Van Morrison is such an iconic great singer songwriter. I love this performance with Elvin Bishop's band better than any version of this song. Reni Slais and Mickey Thomas took the vocals to a whole different level.
Not that my ego needs soothing....but I, Jerry Mckinney and Tom Poole are the horn section in this video....(I am Bill Slais..the former husband of Reni Slais)..and there's a funny story that goes with this unscheduled backing of Van Morrison....
Billy Slais I absolutely LOVE your horn section Bill!!! This performance is just SO 70’s!! I love it!! I miss the purity and honesty of The Midnight Special!! You guys slayed it!! Plus, in the interest of full disclosure, I thought your wife was smokin! (And a killer voice to boot!) Which horn were you playing? This is in my Top 5 MS performances!!
toniann brooklyngirl . Man I just can't even believe all the talent on this stage you got Mickey Thomas from Starship in the Elvin Bishop band..an the guy in the white hat is absolutely rocking
Toniann, I was there;) Saw the taping of this because Thin Lizzy was also doing the program (I was a huge Lizzy fan and lived in LA originally)..the show was done in Burbank CA at NBC studios...besides remembering Van coming out, which was Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy's biggest idols, Wolfman Jack announced it was Elvin's birthday that day!
This is an unbelievable live performance by Van. By the way, Mickey Thomas of Elvin Bishop and Jefferson Starship is assisting with background vocals. Love the guitar with Elvin as well.
I saw Van Morrison in Berkeley and this guy came out and sang a song or two before Van came out. I think one of the songs was “Into The Mystic”. At the time I was wondering who he was and why he was opening the show. Same guy is in this video. So, it was Mickey Thomas!
At the end of the song they are cranking and did something I never heard before - louder then van’s powerful voice. Just awesome. The drummer is fantastic as well as Elvin! This is up there with caravan in last waltz.
Peace & Blessings,I think I was 6 going on 7 when MS was rocking, but man when I was old enough and my Grandparents allowed me to stay up late, MS was one of the highlights of being a 70's era kid. Notice the freedom of the artists, just the energy. I am a member of the Hip-Hop culture, but it was programs of this nature, and artists like Van Morrison who are the foundation of my music, my lyrics, my culture. I get emotional at the 4:26 when Van the Man says it's time for a change, I pray that the world hears his plea and we all recognize it is time for a change. This is soul music, nectar for the soul, I thank my Creator for allowing me to witness that era. This is eternal music !!!Peace,Kev X.
you old ass boomers do not listen to any music that has been produced after 1991. If you didn't turn your nose up at everything that isn't geriatric oldies worship you might find some shit that you like. I could not imagine listening to the same old shit for 40+ fucking years.
@@petersonlafollette3521 I absolutely love Van Morrison, fool. I also listened to over 1000 artists on Spotify alone in 2020. Discrediting all music made after 1989 shows the boomer generation's sheer ignorance and refusal to listen to anything other than their favorite oldies hits they have recycled for 40 years.
Someone asked me about this song the other day. This is probably the best live version out there on the web. The reason the song works is because the third verse is included that is not in the studio Album track (His Band and the Street Choir Album) therefore lengthening the song. Also most people think the song is A Major to D Major but the guitar and piano float a B minor chord over the D which makes the song richer and sweeter. Understanding that concept is what makes this type song. The background vocals are kind of cool also. The only drawback is Elvin Bishop overplaying and the piano parts are a little over the place.
Fucking great video...great job by all the performers...but that chick Reni Slais can really shout it out...love her...Mickey wasn't too bad either!!!!!
ahh count your blessings. seeing stuff like this live the stage would be a postage stamp, you kids got youtube. we all had "A.M. Fing radio. which was how we listened to this or crackling poping vinyl l.ps oh and once a week at aroundmidnght they would dabble out some of this . back when i was sixteen . let me go pub on my crochety grandpa slippers and rock out.
Pt #2 ~ The REASON I mention Sally is because this GREAT Van Morrison song was on the radio back in late '70, early '71 and it always reminded me of her because she was an outstanding dancer (as was I, really) and we use to dance into the early morning hours at the Golden Sails down on 2nd St. and Pacific Coast Hwy, in Seal Beach, CA. Geeez, we had so much fun. You know I loved her dearly but always worried that I wouldn't be the provider she needed AND deserved. God Bless You, Sally!!
I'm not into country music (like the band here obviously does as their main thing) but isn't it great how some things can just bring people together as one and transcend boundaries like that. This is just music at its most pure
I've heard the song It's All Over Now Baby Blue on Girl, Interrupted and I fell in love with it after a short while.... About some odd months later, I find this video on a Midnight Special computer file and I immediately fall in love! Great music, Van!!!! I wish I was in this crowd :D
@no1vanfan ~ I have to agree with you but only after having watched this VID about 10,000 times in the last 3 weeks! Perhaps one of my all-time favorite recordings, by anyone, was Domino by Van. When I came back from Vietnam, at the end of '70, I soon fell in love with my 45 RPM "Domino" BUT I must admit that this '77 Midnight Special version of "Domino" is SO much fun. On my UA-cam "channel" it's one of my 12 favorites, out of 339 songs! And Van has 4 or 5 recordings in my favorites.
Wow... I thought I was the only guy who had to call out the horn lines to the band to remind them of what they're supposed to be playing. Obviously NOT his band. Loosey goosey that's for sure. Live music... gotta love it!!!!
+TheWorfster Right. Funny thing is if you see the sheet music the verse is there, just not on the studio and as far as I could research it wasn't recorded? When I was in the Dukes we played it that same way. We had horns and everything. I have an MP3 of it.
When I came home from Vietnam (6 Nov 70) I began dating Sally Elizabeth Arnold. We had both graduated from Santa Fe High School (Santa Fe Springs, Ca.) in 1965 and though we'd be friends for years ~ we never dated until then. Sally was the BEST. Kind, loving, forgiving, understanding, compassionate and lonely. She asked me to move in (April '71) but I couldn't ~ she lived 40 miles from LAX (where I worked). Sally has been married to Randy since '72 and he takes good care of her. Still.....
On this day in 1970 {December 27th} "Domino" by Van Morrison peaked at #9 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; it had entered the chart on November 8th and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100... Two other songs from the album made the Top 100; "Blue Money" {#23} and "Call Me Up In Dreamland" {#95}... Mr. Morrison celebrated his 68th birthday four months ago on August 31st...
Yeah I mean we did three covers because the band had a horn section. Check out an old Stones cover that the band got famous for. Wilmer Alexander and the Dukes did a cover of "I'm Free" There is a UA-cam video of it.
No not really it was written, he just does not do the third verse in the studio version. He was known to do it live like in the arrangement above. My old band The Dukes did this version.
Cool. Yeah, Van did not so much re-write his lyrics....That was more a Dylan thing. Van just re-arranged the tunes....I think largely the task of his lead sax guy, either JAck Shorer in ealry 70s, or PeeWee Ellis in in early 80s. GOing to listen to the tune now. Reni Slais!!!! What a woman love her vocals!!! Her and Mickey were always outstanding together!!!!
Oct 2020: Who's watching just to see Reni?

Van Morrison is such an iconic great singer songwriter. I love this performance with Elvin Bishop's band better than any version of this song. Reni Slais and Mickey Thomas took the vocals to a whole different level.
Reni can rock the back up vocals.

Sorry to hear about you and Reni Billy.
Van Morrison's singing is not what you think of when you think of Irish singers. He has soul and funk.
More than that.
With no disrespect to the great black soul singers, like WIlson, Otis and Levi, I put Van right in the top pantheon of soul singers.
I can watch this a million times...wish I could jump through this computer and be right there..at that time.

She goes by Reni Simon now
Reni is on time and strong, whether anyone else is or not.
The nice thing is Van is actually singing and there's no backing track to spoil the freshness of the song.
Midnight Special didn't do that. It was live.
cool to see Van and Elvin Bishop on the stage together !
Those two on stage could trade some soulful musical moments!
Mickey Thomas is far right on backing vocals.. this is right about the time of The last waltz too..
This is an unbelievable live performance by Van. By the way, Mickey Thomas of Elvin Bishop and Jefferson Starship is assisting with background vocals. Love the guitar with Elvin as well.

Van Morrison, Elvin Bishop, Reni Slais, M.T., etc., what a lineup and what a song!!
Yow, they just kill this, and are so relaxed doing so. And Reni Slais' vox + dress!
1977, right before my basic training Ft. Gordon, GA.

That darn Elvin Bishop. He just lost his mind on that guitar. Today's bands could never play like Elvin. Not in a million years.
((( ELVIN!!! )))
True! In the 70's we were trying to be the best at what we played. Now they do their music on computers and all they want is to get paid
