How to Answer a Fool

  • When confronted with a foolish person, I am tempted to give him a piece of my mind but will my well-intended advice and wisdom be well-received? There are two equally right and opposite answers when it comes to crafting a wise response to a foolish person.
The first response is not to answer the fool.
The second response is to answer the fool.
Here's when you should not answer the fool - when he is so set in his ways and point of view that he can skillfully defend his position with wise arguments. In fact, from his perspective, his position is very wise indeed (no fool will ever admit he is one!). The trouble is this : the fool is wise in his own eyes. There is an absence of willingness to subject himself to a higher standard of truth, morality and accountability. So, there is little hope of you winning him over based on clever argumentation - in fact, the more you attempt to answer, you end up being like him because you have stooped to his game.
In this week's Wise-Video, you will also discover the second situation when you do need to give a proper answer to a fool. Check it out so that you have a balanced perspective as to your responsibility when faced with foolish people who think that they are wise.
"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time." ~ Abraham Lincoln.

You can take the time & trouble to give the best researched answer to a question and the fool will never understand you. You only end up getting berated. I have realized that out of the several tens of thousands of people I have interacted in my life, 3-4 such fools will never appreciate your input.
I have now learnt: Never to toss one's pearls to swine.

Hi, thanks for the very practical and valuable video teaching. Recently, I had to deal with the two types of fools as mentioned in your video. Yes, you're so right in showing two different approaches. Simple-minded fool and stubborn/bigoted fool are coming from a totally different background. In either way, I've come to an conclusion; best not to associate with them, Instead mix with wise and positive people who can nurture your spiritual growth. Too many people are egotistical and self-centered, and it's a waste of time and energy putting up with them.

I wish I could really get an insight on a person in whom both 1 & 2 types are merged to some extent. The humbleness happens for what is not the truth... For the absolute truth it becomes I know better stubborn ness.
A merge of different levels or narcissistic behavioural patterns...
Its almost a vicious cycle for the others around.
Its quite common n not many have the skills to deal...
The skills of handling such behaviours is so very necessary...
Thank you for sharing this video

I think if someones is genuinely curious and is being respectful about it then that's fine, if someone asks a question as a joke I will still answer it honestly, I'd rather look like an idiot then leave these people that are considered fools in the dark. We should have open mindedness about things and make up our own mind.

My father too depressed to leave my mother who is a raging fool? 22 years of my life since I can remember she has always been a fool with her own rules and neglecting everything since forever and my father is trying to make something of her...He literally ruined the lives of his two children. Me and my brother. Killed our ambitions, dreams and everything outside their moronic rules or am I just fucking being a fool fooling myself?! I seriously don't know.

Today, something happened at my school actually. Our physics teacher started belittling religions and spirituality all of a sudden bcoz one of the students didn't come to school and the reason she explained to her closest friend(who was present) was that due to Ramadan fasting she wouldn't be able to attend school... and the weather was also too sunny and hot, I suppose she was worried about her condition. After knowing this reason, he started lashing out on all religions. He, basically, was trying to prove that the entire concept of prayer & religion is POINTLESS. I'm a non-religious person, but I can definitely see how wrong he is, insulting people's beliefs. He then began ranting about how people of a certain religion form militant groups and kill people(you're right, he was referring to Islamic terrorists). Damn, I had my phone with me, I should've recorded all this but... Isn't it only right to ignore him?? He's just a fool who thinks getting a master's degree in physics and a few years of research with some foreign professors makes him superior enough to speak all this bullshit. I wanted to speak up to him but I just didn't wanna extend his presence in the classroom, duh. I dunno why I got the instinct to stay silent but I guess I know deep within that arguing with a fool is just vain.
If anyone reads this and feels the same rage as me, pls let me know whether or not I was right to not say a word as I didn't want to argue with a fool.

I think I disagree...the scripture says, "dont answer a fool, according to his folly"
The fool is not logical, there is no such of a thing as logic apart from God.
You answer the presupposition, the real problem with him, not what he says.

This is so funny...does he not realise how much of a contradictory hypocritical FOOL he is himself. Of course we should form our OWN opinions. How dare someone else tell me what I should think, say or do! I believe life should be about learning from your OWN path and being open minded. If someone else has a different opinion then that is theirs and I respect that. I dont think Im the wisest or the best or always right but no one can dictate this. I believe this is the fundamental problem of organised religions and people like this man. I pity him but that's my opinion and im proud to say i formed it myself.
