What lots of UA-cam Photography presenters forget is that there are always people new to photography who will search UA-cam for stuff specific to their new camera. I love the way that Tony and Chelsea never forget that fact and put really useful and helpful stuff on here. Loved this video Tony.
"Everyone under 60 will be trying to use it as a touch screen instead of the buttons..." Classic line Tony. Very good summary. I started watching your tutorials when I picked up DSLR photography last year and you guys do it right - good info at a digestible rate while striking an honest balance between what's nice to know versus what's really necessary to know. I appreciate the candid recommendations on accessories as well. Well done and thanks.
Thank you Tony. This is the best D3400 tutorial by far. You successfully covered everything that matters. I am new photoghrahger and I have this camera. Your video is helpful.
My 16 year old daughter wanted a real camera and not just her cell phone camera. Just bought her a D3400 with a Nikon 50mm f1.8 and a Tamron 70mm - 300mm Di VC USD along with the kit lens. I was looking for a reliable walkthrough and found this. Wow! Perfect and thanks so much. I was already familiar with your channel and was so happy to find this gem.
Just bought my first DSLR, a red Nikon D3400. And Im the biggest newbie in the history of mankind when it comes to photography. This video is a lifesaver! Cheers from Sweden
A great (and comprehensive) guide to the D3400. I recently upgraded from a Fuji bridge camera and the D3400 is a nice bit of kit for an enthusiastic amateur. I'm not exactly a beginner as I used to own an Olympus OM-10 many years ago so the actual technicalities are not new to me but this guide served as mostly an intro to the D3400 for me and as a little bit of a refresher course.
Very cool video . I just got the Nikon d3400 FREE from my brother and want to learn how to take professional pictures in due time. Thank you for the video.
O M G I Love Love Love this instructional Video on the D3400. You explain EVERYTHING in such complete detail, even my 10 year old could clearly understand. It really helps tremendously that you show in detail what each settings are for and explain even deeper with each step on your whiteboard as well. Most definitely watching every single video you have and supporting you guys by buying some of ya’lls books and sharing with my Social Media Family. Thank You so much !!!
Thank you so much!! I'm brand new to photography and was recently gifted this camera to get better shots of my toddler who has mostly been captured as a somber and sleepy angel or a toddler shaped blur. It's pretty intimidating right out of the box! The first day I just kind of fiddled with it and was becoming frustrated and discouraged but after finding this video in a quick search of tutorials I'm feeling much more confident... Obviously, I have a lot of practicing ahead of me, some trial and error and of course checking out more of your videos but over the last couple days, thanks to this video alone, I have been able to get some of the most wonderful photos of my little guy even in full blown goofball mode. Thank you! I look forward to learning more and getting even better shots of my family and the world around us in the future!
I just found my D 3400 camera after I retired from teaching and I just found your channel so thank you so much for this informative and educational video it was very helpful
Mine's arriving tomorrow. Just a quick thank you as this is the single most useful video that I've found by a mile. Every query I had on this camera has been answered and I won't need anything else!
Thank you. I’m going to Iceland soon and needed a refresher on all the buttons on my camera and how to adjust shutter and aperture for photographing the Northern Lights.
just bought the D3400 with the 18-55 and 70-300mm lense. this is the first video i've found that actually helped me. liked and subbed! great work. please keep it coming
Question about the D5600 trigger. The D3400 only has a USB port. Does this remote plug into that or the Nikon remote trigger port hat the D3400 is missing? I have yet to find a interval timer that plugs into the d3400 USB port
No need for SD card reader you can connect to your computer by USB cable which is much easier than continually taking out the SD card. Good advice on using view finder over the live view on the display. The lens lock is only on the 18-55 kit lens. Bought this one over the D5600 and was able to add a 55-300 zoom and spare battery. One of the great things is that the screen shows what the f stop looks like which many cameras don't.
Thank you...I am also a new subscriber. Thank you for not "talking down" to your audience (like most of these tuitorials)...I love this camera. Works for me. I'm not out to be a 'camera snob' but truly enjoy this camera. Love Nikon products and sure will move on to better cameras(?) but for now? Like this one and enjoyed your tutorial.
My Husband Just Bought Me This Camera N I Love It I Had No Clue On Photography But I Knew I Wanted To Learn N Thanks To You Im Learning Soo Much Hope I Can Be A Good Photographer Maybe Not Business Wise But Just To Take My Family Good Pictures Its Always Great To Have Good Memories! Thanks For Everything!
Hi Tony, I can not find a wired intervalometer that will work with the Nikon D3400. There's no wired input for shutter control. I hear tell there are Bluetooth versions that might work. Any chance I'm understanding your comments wrong? Are there versions out there that work with the micro USB or HDMI connectors??
The Afl/Ael button can also be used to lock focus once focus is aquired with shutter button without using bbf, this is what its put there for, might be worth mentioning, you can also lock exposure at the same time if you want,i think BBF is over rated but can be used as an alternative to locking with the AFL/AEL.
I absolutely love Tony and Chelsea’s tutorial. I sit and watch this video with a notebook in hand everyday during downtime at work. I’m actually learning how to use my camera-and learning about my camera at the same time! Now I do have a question... I will be using my D3400 to take photos of my boyfriends bands gig in the near future. What settings are recommended for photos in a dark room (bar) with constant motion and some light effects behind the band?
Tony, Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. It is a treasure trove of very useful information professionally presented. I have one question. I am interested in the Remote Trigger that would enable me to program some time lapse photographs. According to your video, at 1:12;30 the d5600 trigger is also compatible with the D3400. That being the case, where, on the D3400 does the cable plug in. On my side panel, I have a female connector for an HDMI cable and a female connector for a mini USB which allows for transfer of photos to PC without taking out the SD card. I can't seem to find anywhere else on the camera body where there is a connector capable of receiving the cable for the SD5600 remote trigger cable that is linked in the video. ??? (The MC-DC2 model) Many thanks for getting back to me on this. Kindest regards, Gil Barrett SemperFiGuy
My God! The best I have ever listened to! Congratulations! I have decided to buy this camera. I mainly take photos when I travel somewhere, which is not THAT often, I don´t take photos here around where I live, as it is very dangerous to do it. Is this the camera I need? If you have time, please, answer me. Good luck! Charles.
i have a problem with my new Nikon D3400, unable to connect with smart phone Bluetooth errors. Snapbridge app ditacting Camera but camera says unable to connect
Hey Tony, I'm buying the Gh4 but the lens option has got me confused. Should I buy the Canon 70-200 and use a metabones speedbooster with it or buy the native Lumix 35-100? Which one would produce a sharper image with little/no vignetting. Sharpness is my main criteria. Also, which speedbooster would be better, .64 or the .71 considering I'd only use the full frame lenses.
This is a great tutorial Tony. I have a question about the BB focus. After setting the BB, should I keep the Shutter release button set on, or off? Much thanks
This is a very helpful video. Not only camera specific but also touches up on many things to clarify their use and helps to make better shots. Is there any way to calibrate the camera’s front or back focusing?
The remote shutter release you mentioned--the one that works for the 5600 and the 7200--doesn't work for the 3400. There is no cable release for this camera. You have to use one of the infra red versions. One push to start, one push to stop, in bulb mode. *I bought one, per your recommendation, so I found out for myself.
Hi Tony & Chelsea, I am new to DSLR photography as I recently purchased a Nikon D5500 with 18-55mm kit lens. Now I'm looking for a prime lens and a bit confused about 35mm and 50mm f/1.8G. I usually take some portraits, street photography and daily life photos. Which one should I choose? Thanks for your helpful tips
Hi I’m a new photographer and I have a D3400 now for about a year. And looking to upgrade to a Nikon D7100 would this be and upgrade or a down grade for use in 2019 for small gigs portrait and street photography please give me feedback Thank you
I followed the instructions to engage back-button focus (I have done that on my Canon, too, so no problem there.) The problem now is I cannot get it off. I retraced the steps. I even tried a whole camera reset, and nothing. I had the camera set to center focusing before that, and though it still is set there, the camera is still acting like it has BB focus on! Any help?
I'm watching this in 2018 and Snapbridge is still a buggy mess. Thank you for including that explanation at the end, I thought it was just something I was doing.
Haha, yeah, they've had A LOT of software updates to improve it but it's still SO frustrating that we just don't use it, even on new cameras like the D850.
Hi... I am about to purchase the Nikon d3500 and I want to know the difference between d3400 and d3500. Btw I am at a beginner level photographer and the advice would be much appreciated.
Can you verify that the D5600 Trigger mentioned in your video will indeed work on the D3400. The Amazon page says it only has the MC-DC2 connection is not available on the D3400.
I want to thank you for this. I purchased this camera a few months ago. now I'm really getting into it because I'm traveling to Alaska - Will do entire tutorial. Quick question, How do I record on this camera. Thanks again.
Thanks Tony, it was very helpudfull, I bought My Nikon D3400 last year. Current learning a lot from your videos and you love to watch whenever I get a chance to watch, your work really looks professional and the studio, thanks for all the podcast. Here is my question, I'm looking for a good lens that will be best for my NikonD3400, the one that came with my Camera got and would love to replace with a better one, I saw the sigma that you guys recommended but also saw the reviews of people saying something about that lens, when it comes to calibration, would love to hear what lens would you recomed My gadget is $700 for an 18-35mm lens thanks
Thank you so much for such an amazing and comprehensive video!! It's very informative and professional!! P.S. you just got a new subscriber plus I will be buying your book soon!!!
How do i change my Automatic ISO in Manual mode to Manual ISO? Sometimes It's annoying that the whole image is perfect but the ISO ruined it. Thanks for this tutorial!
I want to upgrade from a fugifilm s9900w bridge camera. I mostley take wild life pics. Would this be a good upgrade... for the price of it? (on amazon with 2 lenses for around 500$)
Tony, I followed your instructions for BACK FOCUS, I followed YOUR instructions for BACK FOCUS, Now the camera focuses when I push the AEL button, BUT, when I push the shutter button half way down the red focus button still lights up, AND the green focus circle appears as it now does when I push the AEL button.... why does this happen?....I thought that focus button would no longer work because it works now when I push the AEL button....What did I do wrong?????? ALSO I checked the firmware and it is updated but there is no LF 1:00 listed, why?....I am using a sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens...
might be too late but try one of these (I haven't tried them myself): www.amazon.co.uk/Intervalometer-Photography-Multi-Terminal-DSC-RX100M3-DSC-RX100III/dp/B00NSE1F6I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1520216008&sr=8-1&keywords=Timer+Remote+Switch+for+Sony+Multi-Terminal www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B019XR27U6/ref=psdc_1330733031_t1_B00NSE1F6I www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1182655-REG/vello_rc_s2ii_shutterboss_version_ii_timer.html
The only way for a timelapse with d3400 is by connecting it via usb to a smartphone and download an app that can trigger the camera from. There is no compatible intervalometer for d3400.
I have a Nikon D3400 and for some reason the flash wont pop up. I've gone thru the settings and everything seems to be set right but when I push the button or try to takes pictures it wont pop up and flash. Please help!
Well im 51 years old iv been lookng for a camera easey to use il take your advice get myself a nikon wich one would you recomend D3300 or D3400 thank you mark im in the UK grate video
mark 2E0PIA A lot of people like the D3300 better, but honestly the difference isn't by much and a lot of it is up to the lense you are using. I'd say go with whichever one is less on the wallet. Best Buy has a Black Friday sale with this camera, two lenses, an sd card and a free camera bag for $409. I suggest trying that deal.

Thanks Tony from Cape Town. I watched the tutorial twice - I've been an auto addict. But that's going to change now. Excellent tutorial.
I really like you more then other camera videos, you make it easy and the step by step of your videos helps me out!

Very detailed, and I liked how you explain it, a lot. I'll give a try to your book. Thank you good sir!
I don't think the remote shutter in your recommendation is compatible for d3400, can you suggest anything else?
I think it is great that you took the time to inform the folks on this beginners model of which i also have, smile......
Hi Tony, why does my bluetooth symbol is not highlighted in the menu for the Nikon D3400?
Tony basically covers every modern cameras!
I recently purchased D 3400. I am new to Photography. Which your book is good for me to start with ?
Hi, I'm a beginner photographer, do you recommend I buy the Nikon D3400
w/ AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm OR
w/ AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm + 70-300mm ?
They never comment to anyone who comments. I hate youtubers like that.
This was SO informative and helpful!!! Thank you for the detailed information.
This was really helpful. Thank you so much. I will definitely be investigating in your books.
This is a great tutorial Tony. I have a question about the BB focus. After setting the BB, should I keep the Shutter release button set on, or off? Much thanks
Wish I had seen this man during my film photo days...lol. Great simple instruction!
Hello Tony. Just wondering if you had a chance to try out the Pentax KP? Heard it's somewhat mediocre. :)
Amazing work, amazing channel. Thank you very much for all the knowledge that you share. I really appreciate it. Take care.
This is a very helpful video. Not only camera specific but also touches up on many things to clarify their use and helps to make better shots. Is there any way to calibrate the camera’s front or back focusing?
Awesome Video Sir , just got D3400 Very timely instructions
When you start talking about shutter and focusing modes, is the camera set to manual ?
The remote shutter release you mentioned--the one that works for the 5600 and the 7200--doesn't work for the 3400. There is no cable release for this camera. You have to use one of the infra red versions. One push to start, one push to stop, in bulb mode.
*I bought one, per your recommendation, so I found out for myself.
Just bought one of these badboys today. Many many thanks for this masterclass on the camera.
This guy is a god for this
What happens when RAW + JPEG are selected? I only see one image, should I see both formats?
Awesome in depth video! Really feel like I learned a lot about photography. Thanks!
What happened to your overview of the Nikon D5300? I was looking to rewatch it after I purchased my camera but it's gone.
Hi, Harish. The 50mm is better for portraits, the 35mm is better for street. Also, we have a separate tutorial for the D5500 at sdp.io/tutorial.
Chomping at the bit for the Oly EM-1 Mark II tutorial Tony......
so i’ve been looking all over the internet looking for a solution to my problem. I can’t get my self timer to work. Does anyone have a solution?

I think that the back button that you refer to is the AF-l/AF-l (focus lock button) on the D3400. Please verify...Thanks

Would you recommend getting a hood for the lens that comes with the camera(the one in this video) I bought one from Promaster already
I followed the instructions to engage back-button focus (I have done that on my Canon, too, so no problem there.) The problem now is I cannot get it off. I retraced the steps. Can you verify that the D5600 Trigger mentioned in your video will indeed work on the D3400. The Amazon page says it only has the MC-DC2 connection is not available on the D3400.
Great infor! Whats your opinion on ACDsee? Thanks!
I want to thank you for this. I purchased this camera a few months ago. now I'm really getting into it because I'm traveling to Alaska - Will do entire tutorial. Quick question, How do I record on this camera. Thanks again.

This is very helpful as a first time use D3400.
Tony, which lens would you recommend for landscape/architecture?
Look into the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 or Tokina 11-20mm
Balazs Bezeczky thanks!!
Thank you for such a great in depth review on this dslr, after watching this video I will be definitely buying the Nikon D3400. 👍
I want to upgrade from a fugifilm s9900w bridge camera. I mostley take wild life pics. Would this be a good upgrade... for the price of it? (on amazon with 2 lenses for around 500$)
I upgraded from a Fujifilm S3380 bridge camera and yes, they are worlds apart and definitely worth doing.
Hello, i would like to know if i found the same video in French? Thanks
Hey Tony , do you sell e-books for your work???
Also re iso settings the FN button is set to press giving you immediate access to change ISO setting
What shutter speed would you recommend for automotive pictures? For still pictures and driving pictures
Edgar Paez slower for moving pictures and you can afford long with lower iso for still pictures to up the quality with the same light.
How long should I charge a DSLR battery for the first time for best results?
I just got this camera for Christmas. My focus choices are either automatic or manual, why do you have so many options on your's?
fishchick72 did you figure it out ? Nothing changes when I pick settings, it goes back to whatever the camera chooses...I’m on manual mode too
Thanks for incredible tips, I will be on my way to purchase this tonight.
is a manual mode lens which says ( F8 ) fixed and how do you set it
Nikon d3400 doesnt have mic jack, how to put mic on that for vlogging, can i use gorpo mic adapter???
SMIVLOG You have to use the internal mic or get the 3300
The intervalometer you mentioned in this video doesn't work with the Nikon D3400. There isn't a DC-2 port on the camera.
Hey Andrew, I just realized this disappointing fact. Do you know of a wired option that does work with the D3400? I'm struggling to find anything...
only way I know to get a cabled remote is to buy an IR remote, then rig up a fiber optic cable to it that you can tape over the front IR sensor.
might be too late but try one of these (I haven't tried them myself):

The only way for a timelapse with d3400 is by connecting it via usb to a smartphone and download an app that can trigger the camera from. There is no compatible intervalometer for d3400.
I have a Nikon D3400 and for some reason the flash wont pop up. I've gone thru the settings and everything seems to be set right but when I push the button or try to takes pictures it wont pop up and flash. Please help!
Candice R rip it off
Well im 51 years old iv been lookng for a camera easey to use il take your advice get myself a nikon wich one would you recomend D3300 or D3400 thank you mark im in the UK grate video
mark 2E0PIA A lot of people like the D3300 better, but honestly the difference isn't by much and a lot of it is up to the lense you are using. I'd say go with whichever one is less on the wallet. Best Buy has a Black Friday sale with this camera, two lenses, an sd card and a free camera bag for $409. I suggest trying that deal.
Is there a way to control the shutter speed, aperture, & ISO at the same time on this camera?
Yes. Manual mode.
Any lessons on taking photos of paintings in RAW to make giclée prints?
