    I just bought a Nikon D3400 today! Recently I have been going through so tough times emotionally with family and relationships. Photography is something I always had an interests in but have never really dived in. Thank you for making these videos, it's getting my mind off things and helping me fall in love with photography! Thank you again and I hope to see more videos like this.

      Hello Kevin - thank you for the feedback and welcome to the world of DSLRs!:) I know what you mean - photography is a creative escape for me as well. NOTE - deep thought follows!:) - there is something about composing and creating an image that tells a story ... a story that is felt and expressed through an image ... an image that is captured in a fraction of time and frozen for reflection. That is a deep thought!:) Nonetheless, study the camera and thoroughly understand the modes (when and how to use them). This will open creative doors and become a healthy outlet ... you can do!:) Be patient and stay the course!:)

      Thanks for the post/feedback. The D3400 will capture good video in my opinion, but it does lack an external mic port if needed for better sound, etc. The D3300 has the port:). I use a Zoom H1 along with a cheap lavaliere mic which works well.

      @@RealWorld I like the D3500 very much because it doesn't try to overwhelm me with features, and it seems very well made. However, one thing I don't like about it is that they took away the ability to use a remote. To remotely trigger the shutter, I have to use the Nikon app on my phone, which is a flaky experience.

    I have spent the last few days learning my new D3400. I have been using the settings you recommend.
    After a lifetime with my camera set to auto I decided to go PSAM. I thought it best to focus on aperture and shutter speed. Yesterday I spent working on indoor shots using the A setting. I used the smaller 18-55 kit lets. My grandchildren had built gingerbread houses so I spent my time taking pictures of candy, frosting and gingerbread. That was fun. It isn't hard to take interesting photos.
    I spent today outdoors with the larger 70-300 kit lens set on S. Light varied as clouds came and went, and I changed focal lengths as I shot the same subject from 70 through 300. I noticed a few things I thought I might ask about. First, on a few occasions as I slowed the shutter speed toward 1/60 after a certain point the aperture increased. It was sort of like the optimum number was shutter 1/125 and aperture 4.3, if I lowered the shutter speed to 1/60 the aperture would increase to 5 or so. Is that what I should expect? Second, the color pallet would vary from focal length to focal length. It was a winter day and the clouds were coming and going. If the I moved from 70 to 200 or 300 the dominate brown pallet would give way to something shading blue. Can I assume that is normal?
    The first 500 shots have left me impressed. Most of my pictures were good. The initial learning curve isn't nearly as steep as I thought it would be, just a little common sense. Maybe the camera is good enough to protect a beginner from most of his screw ups.
    I really love your videos.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому +2

      Hello Ron - welcome to the channel and thank you for the feedback!:). Typically, if I am shooting something stationary (i.e. portraits (people posing, etc.), landscapes, fixed objects, etc.), I will leverage aperture priority. If I am shooting is low light situations or moving objects (i.e. people moving, etc.), I will leverage shutter priority to freeze motion. Regarding your observations of shooting shutter outside at 1/60 of second and seeing the aperture increase - yes, this is normal as the camera compensates for the available light to maintain proper exposure (remember, the camera controls the aperture in shutter priority). I would also ensure the ISO is set to something low when outdoors and relatively good light (something low being 100 or 200). If you set the manual ISO to 100 and enable auto ISO with a minimum shutter of 1/60, you should be in good shape IMO:). If you have not seen my video on PSAM, consider watching here: ua-cam.com/video/KTneVSxv1qs/v-deo.html ... I discuss the ISO as well. Hopefully this helps!:)

    I own the Nikon D3400. In your review of the 50mm f1.8 lens, you don’t mention whether you’re using the D or G model. Can you tell me which 50mm lens you’re reviewing and if the G model works with the D3400? Thank you-and thank you for your programs.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  4 роки тому

      Thanks for the post/question Paul:). I use the G model and the reason is this ... the D model does not have an auto focus motor which means the camera body must have an auto focus motor. Both the Nikon D3000 and D5000 series lack an auto focus motor. You can still use the D model on a 3000 or 5000 series body but will not have AF:).

      Thanks for the post/feedback Rod!:) There is a time and place for smartphone photos but if you want to elevate your game, migrating to a DSLR or mirrorless is the next step. Smartphone photos are great from a convenience perspective but will never have the capabilities nor sensor size of dedicated cameras ... this is a physical limitation of the form factor which is to be expected. If/when you go down the dedicated camera path, take full advantage of what the dedicated camera offers by staying off the full Auto mode ... leverage the power of the camera and explore the creative possibilities ... this is what makes a dedicated camera shine in my opinion:).

A number of very successful action shots using shutter speed priority semi-manual mode to shoot at high speed to freeze the subject. I'm delighted with the images. Such a great starter video thanks so much. My husband just purchased this for me because I want to be able to capture good images of our growing children however I'm coming into this blind. I'm guilty of just leaving it on auto in other point and shoot cameras. This is the nicest camera I've ever owned but would like advice as to what are the basic settings I can start off with? Would you recommend I change it to what you mentioned in this video or is there other changes you think I should do to start my journey in documenting active kids? Sincerely an excited but oblivious mom :)

    Well done as usual. I look forward to the upcoming tutorials. I'll mention two things. In the movie setting menu, it might be a good idea to switch the "Movie Quality" from "Normal" to "High" if you want the very best results. Also, for those just beginning to edit their images, I'd recommend the free version (30 day trial that never expires!) of PhotoScape X Pro. It's RAW compatible and has many of the same features as Lightroom, is somewhat less complicated, and it's. . . free! The $30.00 PRO upgrade provides even more editing tools once you get the hang of it. Just do a Web search to find the download at the Windows store.

    Hey there....liking the performance of the D3400 w/o all the complications. Question: I want an additional battery but hate the thot of getting the genuine Nikon. I have managed to find good 3rd party batteries for all my other cameras w/ no issues. However in checking, many have said that some won't work w/ the latest update to firmware....albeit....that was probably several yrs ago. Any suggestions? Thanks.....pamela

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 років тому

      I have not had any issues over the years with various batteries. I have seen similar reports regarding off-brand batteries and firmware, but from a technical perspective a battery will not adversely impact firmware:). The firmware may not read the battery accurately, but the battery itself will not harm the firmware. Here is a link to the standard Nikon battery on amazon - amzn.to/2YP1dMZ ... mileage may vary with off brand batteries but should not harm the camera:).

    I am planning to buy my first DSLR. I almost set my mind to D3400 but I think I would prefer to have a LCD screen as I do travel alone and it will help to take selfie. Nikon D5600 IS slightly out of my budget. What would you suggest in this case? Even canon will do, doesn't have to be nikon.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 років тому +1

      The D3400 has a nice sensor, resolution, and image quality for the price but does not have a rotating screen:). Many turn to the D5600. I would take a look at the Nikon D5500 which you might find (look used as well). The D5500 and D5600 are VERY similar with a few minor exceptions (they use the same sensor and resolution as well). Another thought might be the Canon T6i ( ua-cam.com/video/sTi9aUTITlo/v-deo.html ). And one more thought might be the Panasonic G7 ( amzn.to/2DJetM9 ). The G7 is a mirror camera and been around for a few years. I just got my hands on one and find it to be loaded with features at a nice price. In fact, I used it in my recent video - ua-cam.com/video/7JbO7E9vCNA/v-deo.html

    Thank you for your very informative videos. I am a beginner and just made the decision to purchase the D3400 over the D3300. I purchased the bundle that included the 15-55mm VR and the 70-300mm [Non-VR] lenses. My question is with the 70-300mm telephoto lens which for some reason does not have VR. What are the implications of a Non-VR zoom lens for a beginner like myself? The bundle with the two lenses was much more advantageous to purchase. For some reason the D3000 bundle includes both kit lenses with VR, but the D3400 did not. This created a tough decision on deciding between the D3300 and D3400 Bundles. Thank you for all your help.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому

      Hello Brian and thank you for the feedback/post (and welcome to the channel)!:) I believe Nikon intended to keep the list price under $1k and in order to do could not include a 70-300 VR lens so they included the non-VR. The thought behind VR is to help steady any given shot at slower shutter speeds. I plan to release a video in the next couple of days discussing P, S, A, and M modes and will touch on shutter speed in more detail. Nonetheless, the human hand can hold a camera to roughly 1/60 of second without noticeable shake (this is general assumption; some might say 1/80 as well). VR would help steady a shot at something slightly slower (i.e. 1/30 of second; it will not help at 1/10 or slower:)). If you are shooting a 1/60 or faster, VR is of little to no benefit. Keep in mind that VR has nothing to do with movement of the subject, rather VR counters movement of the camera. VR is nice to have when you are shooting a slower shutter and do not have tripod, but it is not mandatory:). As mentioned, I will touch on this in my next video:).

I will do my best to help with the up-coming how-to videos as I feel many people can benefit. Fully understanding ISO, Aperture, and Shutter speed are key to any given image. I strongly believe in practice, practice, and practice:). It is important to understand how you would take photos under various conditions BEFORE the situation arises:).

    Thank you! I will be subscribing. I have the Nikon D3400 with kit 18-55mm lens. I now have an IQ tripod that seems perfect for my needs, and bought an opketa i-ttl 980 flash with the diffuser cap and it came with a bonus honeycomb diffuser (no idea if this thing is handy or not). Just started playing with it as the manual sucks for teaching me anything. i would love a how to video for the Opketa but I am not sure what flashes you have. The Opketa is pretty much the cheapest option I could find with the best value.
    Any other things I should have in my kit for getting out there and shooting? I have been looking at the 55-200mm lens with VRII vs the 70-300mm lens without VR. They are currently similar prices and would likely be my next buy in 6ish months on my birthday. Which would you pick?

If I had to choose between the 55-200 w/ VR and the 70-300 w/o VR, I might lean towards the 55-200:). VR is nice when running around hand-held. If you plan to use a tripod, the VR will not matter:). I would also suggest looking at the fixed 50mm f/1.8 (amzn.to/2eG2eWb) or fixed 35 f/1.8 (amzn.to/2gULtar) ... both are great in my opinion (I would lean towards the fixed 50 over the 35 as I like extra reach:)).

    THANK YOU FOR YOU HELP-----THIS is exactly the steps I did, I did exactly as you instructed, HOWEVER, when I push the shutter half way down the red focus light. still goes on, there is no beep, ......ALSO NOW, when I push the AE-L button down the camera reacts the same----- AND I do do hear a beep when I get focus.....My question to you is, why except for the beep, does my camera reacts the same way when I push down the AE-L button, ????....Please note, when I sent up my Sony SLT for back button and press the shutter button half way down nothing happens, no focus light, nothing........Again, why does this Nikon 3400 when I sent up back button does the camera react the exact same way when I push down the AE-L button, the only thing different is I do not hear the beep, the beep I only hear the beep when I push the AE-L button..........Please check your 3400 and see if your camera reacts as mine, meaning when you push down the shutter button half way you see a red focus light go on as it does when you push the AE-L button down..........YES, BACK BUTTON FOCUS WORKS AND THE SHUTTER BUTTON HALF WAY DOWN NO LONGER FOCUSES, BUT THE DARN RED FOCUS LIGHT STILL GOES ON AND IO FIND THIS DISTRACTING, CAN I SHUT THIS LIGHT OFF??????please respond, thank you

    I have a favor to ask. I am planning to get an entry level DSLR but am struggling between D 3400 and D 5200. Can u tell me which one I should go for? I will go with whatever decision u take. Thanks in advance and once again u r really awesome.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому

      Hello Somiron - welcome to the channel and thank you for the post/feedback/question!:) These two cameras are relatively close regarding specs, but I will give you my two cents:). They both share the same sensor size and burst rate (5 fps). The D5200 has two relatively big pluses - 1) more focal points (39 vs 11) and 2) a fully articulating screen. The D3400 has a much better battery life (1200 shots vs 500) and it also lacks the AA filter which makes for slightly sharper images. In addition, the D3400 is 3yrs newer:). If both cameras are the same prices and they both contain the same lens, I would lean towards the D5200. Both will do a good job with photos (same sensor), but the articulating screen is a nice feature - it allows you self compose and to take shots from low angles, high angles, etc. If the D5200 does not contains the AF-P lens (which is typically included in the D3400 kit), I would lean towards the D3400. The AF-P provides quiet auto focus when shooting video. Hope this helps!:)

    Love the video! Super great info for a beginning DSLR user. My only gripe is your don't have enough videos ;-) We are researching which DSLR to go with and are torn between the D3400 and D7200. Budget is an issue, but we take a lot of photos of our children playing basketball and are wondering if we should invest in the more expensive camera or if you think the 3400 can handle the job. Thanks again for the great videos and for your response.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому

      Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) The D7200 is a better camera overall BUT will share similar quality in relatively ideal conditions with the D3400. Both share the same size sensor and resolution but that is where the similarities stop for the most part:). The D7200 can shoot up to 1/8000th of a second compared to 1/4000th in the D3400. Will you ever need to shoot above 1/4000th ... most likely, no unless you are outdoors in bright light trying to capture a baseball swing, golf swing, etc. When shooting indoor basketball, you will most stay under 1/1000th of second given the lighting conditions. Regardless of the camera, you should consider a lens with a wide open aperture (this will allow more light into the camera which will provide a faster shutter (which is needed for indoor action to stop motion:))). Given your situation, I might suggest the following: D3400 w/ the 18-55 kit lens and a fixed 50mm f/1.8 lens (i suggest the same lens if you chose the D7200:)). When shooting indoor sports, turn up the ISO and enter into aperture mode (A on the dial). Open the aperture wide (the lens is capable of 1.8 but this will also create a shallow depth of field so you may want to try 2.2, etc.). The camera will automatically determine the shutter speed and see what it tells you. Hopefully, your shutter speed will be 1/300th of second or faster. If not, raise your ISO higher:). You might be more noise/grain with higher ISO, but most can be remediated in post processing if needed. Hope this helps!:)

    This is my first DSLR I decided I would get me a camera and make sure I keep my image and can't say but it was 3 Frozen fountain in Kansas City. I kept them for ever. Let someone take my Olympus on the trip. I did not know what to do with Photoshop. Now I got my camera use it my self. I can keep the precious memories I can keep them to my self or share them. No one going anywhere with my new camera. best I can say I am following this step by step . Most I had always use auto. Now watching this video.. I have learned what each button means. I did try on my old canon I had to learn thing alone because I had not seen or known RealWorld. Laugh at me.. I just got the camera and had a SD problem I had to figure it out to keep moving because the Nikon closed on weekends. Thanks for helping me understand.

    Hi,
    I'm planning of getting into bird & wildlife photography (beginner),
    Is Nikon D3400 a better option for me or Nikon D5600?
    & shall I go for a 35mm prime lens or 70-300mm zoom lens will be a better choice?

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому +1

      Hello ... the sensor size and resolution on both cameras are identical so quality will be very similar. The D5600's major advantage is the articulating screen, external mic port, and additional focal points. With that stated, I would consider the D3400 unless you have some extra money in your budget and/or would like a fully articulating touch screen (which is nice:)). The trick to shooting birds/wildlife is to have a good zoom and the ability to stop motion. A lens with a good zoom and low f-stop will come at a cost:). You can still get by with the 70-300 but will need some good light (i.e. bright sunny day). You can also turn the ISO up to increase the shutter if needed.

    Hi I am new to photography and I love your videos. I currently purchased this camera with the 18-55mm and I am curious if I need to also get the 70-300mm lenses?

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  6 років тому

      Thanks for the post/feedback/question:). I have the 70-300 but do not use it too often although it can be nice to have depending on your needs. If you are shooting wildlife (i.e. at the zoo), the 70-300 would be nice. I created a review of the 70-300 which might be of help - ua-cam.com/video/1RaXjNuD6ls/v-deo.html

    Thanks to your videos and talking with a local photographer who I really enjoy their photographs, I'm going to take the next step and get a Nikon d3400. I definitely plan on using your videos, because I plan on getting into street/cityscape/nighttime car light blur/fireworks/etc. photography, and your videos seem to do a great job at showing how to take these different types of photography. Would you also recommend getting the 'Nikon d3400 For Dummies' book to study and use when I don't readily have these videos at my fingertips? I'm thinking about getting it.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  6 років тому

      Sounds like you are on the right path!:) I might suggest holding off on the book (just my two cents) although it would not hurt to have it. My best advice is to go over my various videos on the camera/basics and then practice, practice, practice, and practice some more:). Head out to the local woods, park, downtown areas, inside, bright lights, low lights, etc. and have fun shooting in various conditions. I spend a majority of my time in aperture or shutter priority and leverage manual on various occasions. Before long, you will get the hang of it and better understand how various settings play together - this will allow you to manipulate the camera as needed. Don't get frustrated, take your time, and above all - have fun!:)

    Even though this is an old video, perhaps you still respond... How important is it to have ISO on automatic? Would you recommend it to improve yourself, to turn that off? Or do you always shoot yourself with ISO auto on? And if so, why (not) ISO auto? The other settings I still change..

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for the post:). I typically control my ISO as I like to stay as low as possible. I have used auto ISO though and find it helpful in relatively low lit situations. I discovered Nikon will pick ISOs that fall between stops which is nice. For example, if a scene calls for an ISO greater than 6400 but less than 12800, I may switch to auto ISO as the camera can/will typically pick something between the values.

    • @peonies-
      @peonies- 5 років тому +1

      @@RealWorld great, thanks for your reply! Even though it takes me more time, it helps with practice. I think, depending on the situation I might put it on auto, for example for wildlife shots. :)

    great video and info . but I got a big big concern right now. Please let me know if this is better than 3400 because the 3400 is cheaper right now and besides being newer than 3300 I see a,lot of opinions and most say that 3300 is better what do you think I'm still trying to decide werher to get the 3300 or 3400 hope go hear from you thanks.

      Hello Jorge and great question!:) The D3300 and D3400 are virtually the same with a couple of exceptions ... 1 - the D3300 has a mic-jack which is good for external audio (if you plan to use the camera to record video and want to attach a Rode mic or something similar). Nikon removed the mic-jack from the D3400. 2 - the D3400 has Bluetooth which is missing in the D3300. Bluetooth is used to transfer small images to your phone via SnapBridge (free software from Nikon). This might be handy if you want to snap a picture and have a small jpeg sent to your phone so you can post to social media or share immediately. I am not a big fan since I like to shoot in RAW and post process my images to some extent. 3 - the D3400 also lacks the automatic sensor cleaner. This can be nice to have but not too effective IMO:). The cleaner works by shaking the sensor slightly to remove any dust. I have used this on previous cameras with little to no success:). In the end, I simply used an air bulb to blow the sensor (not a huge deal IMO). 4 - the one nice feature/gain on the D3400? The battery life improved from 700 shots on the D3300 to 1200 shots on the D3400 which is nice:). ... I do not think you will go wrong with either choice. If I found a lightly used D3300 or if I needed to record video with external audio, I might consider the D3300, otherwise I would consider the D3400 (much better battery life):). Hope this helps!:)

      RealWorld thank you very much for your time and help I,think I'll go for the 3400 because is cheaper and it comes with a 18-55 mm and 70-300 m lens for around $600. very helpful 👍👍👍

      Thanks for the feedback:). Examine the physical components looking for any significant signs of wear (deep scratches, loose part, rattling, etc.). Bring a laptop with a card reader if possible > insert a card into the camera and take a few shots > load the card into your laptop and zoom to take a closer look around the image (look for any odd particles, etc.; you might be able to use a mobile device as well) > if possible, try to get the shutter count (I may create a video on this:)).

      LOL - not a problem!:) I might suggest the following list to view (in order) ...
      1) good starting point (ua-cam.com/video/6I3jtQfd-sU/v-deo.html)
      2) gain a better understanding of PSAM (ua-cam.com/video/KTneVSxv1qs/v-deo.html)
      3) consider back button focus (ua-cam.com/video/6qUebpQeclY/v-deo.html);
      4) understand the scene modes (not a big fan but they are nice to understand - ua-cam.com/video/MbN18w-5ERk/v-deo.html)
      5) understanding post processing (ua-cam.com/video/tqd_Cnk-FBM/v-deo.html)
      Hopefully this will put you on the right path:). I have other videos on flash photography, portraits, etc. ... good stuff!:)

    Thank you for your video. I’m about to upgrade from a D60. My main reason is because I need something that will take action shots in gyms that are dim, where you can’t use a flash. D60 ISO limit is 1600. I cannot get a nonblurry shot that’s not dark! Will this camera do that without any extra equipment? Or what would I need? Thank you for your help!

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  6 років тому

      Thanks for the post/question:). Indoor action shots can be a challenge (i.e. volleyball, basketball, etc.). The D3400 can reach an ISO of 25600, but shooting that high will render lots of noise. In my review video for the D3400 I took a few shots at 12800. I was able to reduce the noise in Lightroom and render a usable image. You can get by with the kit lens (18-55), but I might suggest the Nikon fixed 50 as well ( amzn.to/2eG2eWb ). The fixed 50 opens the aperture to 1.8 which is great for indoor action shots. The trade-off to a fixed lens is the lack of adjustable range:). If you can move around a bit, the fixed 50 is a viable option in my opinion.

      Hello - welcome to the channel and thank you for the feedback!:) Ahhhhh yes, ruby red - I saw this camera color at a local store and thought - wow!:) I was curious to know if they made the camera is other colors but later discovered, no:). Made me think - would be interesting to create shells for each camera model. This might be an interesting way to protect the body and offer a personal look!:) Welcome to the world of DSLRs and enjoy the ride!:)
