The Duesenberg is the Rolls Royce of lap steels . In price as well as quality . The Benders as a component cost more by themselves than a medium priced Lap Steel . Disregarding the Bender unit , a Lap Steel is a pretty basic thing . Essentially a slab of wood with an electric pickup . As long as the tuners stay tuned , and the pickup gives signal , they're 98% the same . ( Yeah , yeah , different pickups give different tones , but that's preference ,not better vs worse ) . They DO come in various different scale lengths . The sort of almost quasi typical is 22.5 inch , but can vary from 20.5 inch to 25 inch ( someone add metric translation if inclined ) . What's the difference ? Dobro players will gravitate to 25 inch , simply because that's what they're used to . The probably best known Player today , who plays Lap Steel as their primary instrument , Megan Lovell of the Blues/ Roots duo Larkin Poe , plays 25 inch for that reason . If you're not already a Lap Style player , the rule of thumb is longer makes precise intonation while playing easier , shorter makes radical bar slants easier .
Tremolo is all in your left hand , not pedals . If you are going to play with a round " bullet" bar as Pete is doing here , you really need a Volume Pedal . If you play with a Grooved bar , volume pedals are optional .
Thanks for showing how the capo works , no one else seems to show this great idea , that makes the instrument very incredible , Why didn't you play the guitar with the capo moved down the neck ? Why , Why . What is the scale length on that guitar ?

He was obviously very talented but his presentation was more "guitar shop salesman chops" rather than him just playing his best and "here it is". Pete has grown into the presenter/ demo role so much. I'm not surprised at all that he can play a lap steel at a high level. Kudos to Pete for this video.
No offense to Pete , for whom above in comments was related that for this video was his first actual playing of a Steel . But Pete is demonstrating very basic , baby step techniques . ( Not a slam . If whatever sounds good in a song , it IS good , and filling the required purpose .)
Here's an amazing and topical bit of guitar trivia. Freddie Tavarez, who played the lap steel intro to the Looney Tunes theme, was one of Leo Fender's right hand men and actually helped design the Strat body shape and persuaded Leo to ditch his initial trem design (ala Jazzmaster) and came up with the tremolo system that's been on Strat's since day one!

That guitar is a UFO !! and with only ONE mic !! I am 58 and I have played and bought tons of guitars ... Most rock guitarists who pickup a Steel for occasional flavoring usually play Very Basic steel parts . Not necessarily a slam , if it sounds good and fits the song , it's all good . But they're usually operating at 5% of the potential of the instrument .
The idea is to rest the palm of your hand on the bending levers so you can pick the strings and bend them without drastically changing your hand position.

Duesenberg lap steels are great sounding instruments. Love the fact they can provide some pedal steel style bends. They sound especially good when played by the likes of Luke Cyrus Goetze. He's a monster player. Fingerpicks definitely give you a more traditional tone but not mandatory.

The benders really nudge it into pedal steel territory. A pedal steel guitar is not only very expensive, they're time-consuming to setup, and the learning curve is quite steep. With all the different parts and assembly, maintenance can be an issue, whereas this lap steel has a bit gentler learning curve and travels and sets up much easier. Get a volume pedal and you'll get even closer, as volume swells are a big part of the sound, though the "speed knob' seems to kind of do that already. Thanks for the demo!

Yes Lee has been steady I’m proving for years but playing with Pete helps because he plays more his style while Rob can play blues/rock he is much better at metal/progressive/indie so Pete and Lee’s jams mesh better. Plus Pete is just an amazing player it helps to play with someone so good
I’ve found that one of the best ways to improve is to just surround yourself and play with musicians who are that much better than you, and you can see that with Lee. I’d reckon that Rob’s caused the most change in Lee’s playing overall, but Pete’s playing being closer to Lee genre-wise has definitely helped. Either way, more ear candy for us!
As a result if the lapsteel being the bestseller in the last year, there will be either: An absolute explosion of great country players in the next five to ten years, OR, a plethora of owners of lapsteels they still can’t play. (I’m currently the latter myself.)
Brilliant playing as ever but £2000.00 , sorry , you would have to be a touring pro ( like Pete ) to get full benefit of an albeit great sounding instrument like the Dusen . Honestly , you can buy a nut converter ( sounds painful ) for £15 and up your action to see if slide is for you . I did , and it’s great fun with some reverb , delay and phaser , but would I buy a lap steel unless I was going into a country band or pro Floyd tribute , even then you would only use it for two or three songs . It’s an amazing skill / discipline to play , Pete could probably play a £200 lap steel and still make it sound amazing , fx and feel help too 😊👍
Lap steel players make it look so easy , but it just isn’t! Went to see The Cadillac Three a few years ago and was stood straight in front of Kelby Ray , he just killed it all night and made me think “ I could do that no problem” until you try 😁definitely a black art in my opinion.
Had one of those Pomonas when they came out 10 years ago, they were basically 50% less expensive back then. That was my 2nd attempt at lap steel. My first attempt, I had a Fender Champ Lap Steel from the 50s. And now, I'm back at it.... The only thing I changed now, I tune it to C6, so I have major and minor chords without slanting the bar. Was the best decision! No open tunings for me anymore. But Someone will build me an 8 string Lap à la Fender Stringmaster, and it will still be 50% less than those Düsies.
Nice review! And btw, having the long bridge adjustment screws allows you to move the bridge further back than usual - for proper intonation - if you decide to venture into lower tunings like open-C and a lot fatter strings on a standard scale guitar. Having just recently bought longer after market screws for a different guitar for that reason I can imagine that to be one reason for them too - in particular with the baritone pedigree that Duesenberg have.
You mentioned Looney Tunes but didn’t mention Freddie Tavares! Freddie played that lapsteel lick and was the engineer at Fender back in the 50’s. He was hugely important in the design and realisation of the Strat.
How popular is lapsteel in UK and EU? It's an instrument I really dismissed because it was so over-played in country music, but recently I've been hearing it in a new light, and it's such an achingly beautiful instrument. I would love to see it regain popularity and find new applications.

Only slightly oversimplified , there are essentially three different playing styles used with Lap Steel , primarily based upon the player's musical background . Pete in this video is the stereotype of conventional guitarist dabbling with a Steel for change of pace . Often plays finger style ( or occasionally guitar pick ) . Uses common guitar open tuning . Very basic Bar techniques , similar to bottleneck on ( vertical ) guitar . Megan is textbook Dobro style player. ( She was already Excellent Dobro player before ever discovering electricity .) Uses Finger picks . Uses a dirivitive of a Stevens Bar , with side/ top groves to facilitate raising and lowering Bar on and off strings . Primarily plays in Dobro tuning ( GBDGBD aka Hi Bass G ) . Uses tone bar with Dobro techniques , hammer ons , pull offs , slants , single noteing and full bar contact both . Least common - Neo Pedal Steel . Finger Picks of course . But uses a cylindrical " Bullet Bar . Rarely , if ever raises Bar off of the strings , instead uses a volume pedal for basic starting & stoping , plus volume swells as an effect . Will do very radical bar slants , beyond the physical capabilities of a grooved bar . If they are recreating early Traditional Hawaiian , or mid 1930's Western Swing , probably C6 or closely related 6th Tuning . more modern ( post 1940 ) lots of unique personal preference tunings , often inspired by E9 , but truncated for six strings instead of eight strings . The semantics were/ are fluid between 1st Generation Lap Steel with six strings , and later " Console " Steel Guitars . Still pre dating Pedal , they grew to typically eight strings with usually two necks , not uncommonly three necks . And instead of being directly on player's lap , freestanding on legs . There are videos on UA-cam featuring Bob Dunn , Jerry Byrd . Jochem Murphy , Leon Mc Aluffie , etc from the late '40s and early '50s that are very impressive for their skilled playing .
Dusenbergs are such quality guitars, they always sound amazing but I really love the tone of that lap! Check out Larkin Poe for some amazing lap playing.
The Bender mechanism itself is an expensive component . And not really sought out , or made serious use of , except by very experienced and skilled players . Sometimes . If they're interested . Other than those , a lap steel is a very simple ( physical) instrument . Essentially a plank of wood with strings and a pickup . If Pete had gotten a £199 Recording King out of stock , and played it through the same signal chain , it would have sounded very similar . ( But it would have looked like a plank of wood with strings and a pickup , while the Duesenberg is a work of visual art .)
Wonderful intro, but God knows I don't need a lap steel. I think Troy Van Leeuwen's lap steel in Queens of the Stone Age is some of the most distinctive lap steel playing, as I can't think of many other true hard rock applications for the instrument.
@@BellTunnel could come from the transport. Or its a Demo model from the shop and some one danged it. Looks to me like the wood broke a bit at this point. Nothing wrong with the binding. I own two Düsenbergs myself and don't have any problems with them. Friend of mine also got one but that was custom build for her so I guess that doesn't count.
Their lapsteels are superior in many ways. The scale is longer than standard lapsteels. Their sustain is greater. The benders can also be adjusted to go flat by a half step. Lapsteels is an instrument that has similarities to guitar but requires a totally different approach. If you just want to play delta blues styles then get any lapsteels but for a broader style the Duesenbergs are the best.
Scale length for Steel is personal preference , and a matter of debate among Steelers . Most are in the neighborhood of 22.5 inches . The reason is to facilitate Slants , which can hit up against the ergonomic limits of the wrist and fingers . The shorter the scale , the less extreme the angles for certain slants . 25 inch scale Steels are usually sought out by experienced Dobro players who switch back & forth , who want to maintain their left hand muscle memory . ( The very first Lap Steel , the Ricenbacher Frying Pan was offered in both 22.5 and 25 .)
I find the weird tunings too confusing (yes , I do have troubles getting up). Get a six string version and tune it to the regular tuning you use on your normal guitar. It's still difficult!!! Best, Pete

The button on the Lap Steel headstock is to keep the tuner buttons in the air when you play it on a table or a stand.

And btw, having the long bridge adjustment screws allows you to move the bridge further back than usual - for proper intonation - if you decide to venture into lower tunings like open-C and a lot fatter strings on a standard scale guitar. Having just recently bought longer after market screws for a different guitar for that reason I can imagine that to be one reason for them too - in particular with the baritone pedigree that Duesenberg have.

You mentioned Looney Tunes but didn’t mention Freddie Tavares! Freddie played that lapsteel lick and was the engineer at Fender back in the 50’s. He was hugely important in the design and realisation of the Strat.
How popular is lapsteel in UK and EU? It's an instrument I really dismissed because it was so over-played in country music, but recently I've been hearing it in a new light, and it's such an achingly beautiful instrument. I would love to see it regain popularity and find new applications.

Yes , and she illustrates an important observation about Lap Steel playing styles . Only slightly oversimplified , there are essentially three different playing styles used with Lap Steel , primarily based upon the player's musical background .
Pete in this video is the stereotype of conventional guitarist dabbling with a Steel for change of pace .
Often plays finger style ( or occasionally guitar pick ) . Uses common guitar open tuning . Very basic Bar techniques , similar to bottleneck on ( vertical ) guitar .
Megan is textbook Dobro style player. ( She was already Excellent Dobro player before ever discovering electricity .)
Uses Finger picks . Uses a dirivitive of a Stevens Bar , with side/ top groves to facilitate raising and lowering Bar on and off strings . Primarily plays in Dobro tuning ( GBDGBD aka Hi Bass G ) . Uses tone bar with Dobro techniques , hammer ons , pull offs , slants , single noteing and full bar contact both .
Least common - Neo Pedal Steel .
Finger Picks of course . But uses a cylindrical " Bullet Bar . Rarely , if ever raises Bar off of the strings , instead uses a volume pedal for basic starting & stoping , plus volume swells as an effect . Will do very radical bar slants , beyond the physical capabilities of a grooved bar .
If they are recreating early Traditional Hawaiian , or mid 1930's Western Swing , probably C6 or closely related 6th Tuning . more modern ( post 1940 ) lots of unique personal preference tunings , often inspired by E9 , but truncated for six strings instead of eight strings .
The semantics were/ are fluid between 1st Generation Lap Steel with six strings , and later " Console " Steel Guitars . Still pre dating Pedal , they grew to typically eight strings with usually two necks , not uncommonly three necks . And instead of being directly on player's lap , freestanding on legs .
There are videos on UA-cam featuring Bob Dunn , Jerry Byrd . Jochem Murphy , Leon Mc Aluffie , etc from the late '40s and early '50s that are very impressive for their skilled playing .

Dusenbergs are such quality guitars, they always sound amazing but I really love the tone of that lap! Check out Larkin Poe for some amazing lap playing.

Exactly, overpriced is overpriced regardless of the country of origin.
The Bender mechanism itself is an expensive component . And not really sought out , or made serious use of , except by very experienced and skilled players . Sometimes . If they're interested .
Other than those , a lap steel is a very simple ( physical) instrument . Essentially a plank of wood with strings and a pickup .
If Pete had gotten a £199 Recording King out of stock , and played it through the same signal chain , it would have sounded very similar .
( But it would have looked like a plank of wood with strings and a pickup , while the Duesenberg is a work of visual art .)
Wonderful intro, but God knows I don't need a lap steel. I think Troy Van Leeuwen's lap steel in Queens of the Stone Age is some of the most distinctive lap steel playing, as I can't think of many other true hard rock applications for the instrument.

Anyone else notice the binding gap in the Tom Bukovac model’s F hole. Really egregious quality control for a guitar that costs almost $3.5k.
I can't see a gap there. The binding is nearly the same color as the finish of the guitar maybe that tricked you or me

@@BellTunnel could come from the transport. Or its a Demo model from the shop and some one danged it. Looks to me like the wood broke a bit at this point. Nothing wrong with the binding.
I own two Düsenbergs myself and don't have any problems with them. Friend of mine also got one but that was custom build for her so I guess that doesn't count.

Sounded great. Mark Hart played one in Crowded House. Mark ‘Shez’ Sheridan’s work with Richard Hawley is great and so is Mr Hawley too on lapsteels.

Their lapsteels are superior in many ways. The scale is longer than standard lapsteels. Their sustain is greater. The benders can also be adjusted to go flat by a half step. Lapsteels is an instrument that has similarities to guitar but requires a totally different approach. If you just want to play delta blues styles then get any lapsteels but for a broader style the Duesenbergs are the best.
Scale length for Steel is personal preference , and a matter of debate among Steelers . Most are in the neighborhood of 22.5 inches .
The reason is to facilitate Slants , which can hit up against the ergonomic limits of the wrist and fingers . The shorter the scale , the less extreme the angles for certain slants .
25 inch scale Steels are usually sought out by experienced Dobro players who switch back & forth , who want to maintain their left hand muscle memory . ( The very first Lap Steel , the Ricenbacher Frying Pan was offered in both 22.5 and 25 .)

I find the weird tunings too confusing (yes , I do have troubles getting up). Get a six string version and tune it to the regular tuning you use on your normal guitar. It's still difficult!!! Best, Pete
