Messi is awesome and indeed more consistent, over longer period of time, but even he cannot touch the levels of magic Maradona was capable of. Plus one must also take into account the protection stars like Messi get from refs today, while Maradona was mercilessly hacked wherever he went.

At 2:10 and 3:05, i did think that the linesman had made a mistake here. It was not an offside positions by the Belgium players. Belgium was robbed of possibility of 2 goals. That would likely changed the game scenario. But apart from that, Maradona was simply a majestic, gifted and brilliant player.

I was 14 years old in 1986 watching this game on TV in Houston, Texas. In also watched the Argentina-Germany Final, I can still remember the words and screams of the biased spanish-speaking TV sports commentator screaming an obscenity when Maradona scored the 3rd goal on Germany.
Diego didn't scroed the 3rd goal on Germany, but his killer pass that led his teammate Jorge Luis Burruchaga scored. I'm your age, also remember the first time got up in the middle of the night watching this game live.

You are right of course, the assumptions of the commentators were ridiculous. Keep in mind though: In the '80's level was OFF. That is to say, you usually needed daylight between you and the defender or expect to be called off. And directives were NOT to give benefit of the doubt to the attacker. You generally needed to be very deep to reasonably expect an onside call. Belgium did not feel as ripped off at the time as we think now. It was normal. You really had to EARN goals in the '80's lol

At 2:10 and 3:05, i did think that the linesman had made a mistake here. It was not an offside positions by the Belgium players. Belgium was robbed of possibility of 2 goals. That would likely changed the game scenario. But apart from that, Maradona was simply a majestic, gifted and brilliant player.

Remembering watching this game in 1986,that saying always reinstated with me.
I was 14 years old in 1986 watching this game on TV in Houston, Texas. In also watched the Argentina-Germany Final, I can still remember the words and screams of the biased spanish-speaking TV sports commentator screaming an obscenity when Maradona scored the 3rd goal on Germany.
Diego didn't scroed the 3rd goal on Germany, but his killer pass that led his teammate Jorge Luis Burruchaga scored. I'm your age, also remember the first time got up in the middle of the night watching this game live.

You are right of course, the assumptions of the commentators were ridiculous.
Keep in mind though: In the '80's level was OFF. That is to say, you usually needed daylight between you and the defender or expect to be called off. And directives were NOT to give benefit of the doubt to the attacker. You generally needed to be very deep to reasonably expect an onside call. Belgium did not feel as ripped off at the time as we think now. It was normal.
