One of my favorite World Cup matches. Very entertaining, almost surreal. The grass on the pitch is mowed in circular way. It starts raining in the 2nd half, bringing relief from heat to players and spectators alike. Maradona was in imperious form. And his teammates were hilariously wasteful. I'd have to say the overturned Maradona goal was a bit harsh. He did make contact, but he was playing the ball. I've seen goals allowed with a lot more contact than that. Today I think it would be allowed.

This Argentinian squad was a new generation .. Most of the shining stars of 1978 and 1982 world cups were either retired or excluded from the 1986 squad .. Only 3 players in WC 1986 squad have previously played in WC 1982 : Maradona , Valdano & Olarticoecea .. Passarella was included too but was on the bench all the time .. Goalkeeper Pumpido was the substitute goalkeeper for Argentina in 1982 but wasn't given the chance to replace the first goalkeeper back then ( Fillol ) ..

Much of football is 'inside' play, unseen unless you play. That's why this match was pivotal in this world cup. Uruguay were demonised unfairly and it damaged their style of play. I learned so much studying this and the 1987 Copa America Semi Final between the two teams. Real football!
Burruchaga doesn’t get any credit .. but he was always so sharp and freaking dangerous his own way while the world only paid attention to #10.. what a freaking beast that guy.. if he had lived in the park early 2000’s he would have been more lethal that Crespo and Salas

He had recently been voted as the best player in the Brazilian league and was in exelent form. He did play the Copa America 1987 in Argentina when Uruguay won beatibg the host, who had the same team that won the world cup...

Francescoli was a great player indeed (although not the best, that one was Ruben Paz), but during this championship he was wrongly placed as attacking midfielder / play maker (the traditional number 10, Ruben Paz natural position), when he was a natural second striker or centre forward. Our best defender by far at that time (Hugo De León) was not even in the squad, while others were in the bench (Ruben Paz, Venancio Ramos, Darío Pereyra) or not even in the squad (Ruben Sosa)... the greatest waste of all times of in Uruguayan football history. That squad, with a proper coaching, could have won the 1986 WC instead of the very poor performance shown (semi-finals would have been the minimum acceptable given the talent available). Proof of that is that during the 80's, out of the World Cup, Uruguayan national team and clubs were the most successful in the world, winning 2 Americas Cup (1983-1987), the only World Champions Championship or "Mundialito" ever disputed (1981), 4 times Libertadores Cup champions (1980, 1982, 1987, 1988), and 3 times FIFA Club World champions (1980, 1982, 1987), our top players were considered superstars everywhere they played... 33 years later, it still hurts.
I was dissapointed with the Uruguayan team in this World Cup. They had such brilliant players. If they could only gel. I had the same dissapointing feeling about the Dutch team 4 years later. Such brilliant players, but not much to show for it

that was a dirty latin American derby in this match, they scratched and clawed to survive in that world cup but argentina were just too good and had that extra sting on the Uruguayans.
Uruguay was grotesquely coached... Ruben Paz in the bench, Hugo De León, Ruben Sosa, out, Víctor Diogo unfairly suspended... some other players playing in wrong positions, a complete disaster. When Ruben Paz got into the pitch the match changed completely (many of his plays are not shown in this compact, one of them amazing dribbling half Argentinian team). Uruguay killed itself in this world cup having the best players (R. Paz, Francescoli, R. Sosa, De León, Venancio Ramos, Alzamendi, Gutiérrez, Diogo, Fernando Álvez, Jorge Da Silva, Carlos Aguilera, etc.), most of them in the bench and some not even in the squad. Best generation ever squandered by the worst coach ever.

@@jonnisahputra2943, Uruguayan formation against Denmark (and throughout the entire tournament) was horrendous due to this subnormal person we had as a coach. Francescoli was a great player indeed (although not the best, that one was Ruben Paz), but during this championship he was wrongly placed as attacking midfielder / play maker (the traditional number 10, Ruben Paz natural position), when he was a natural second striker or centre forward. Our best defender by far at that time (Hugo De León) was not even in the squad, while others were in the bench (Ruben Paz, Venancio Ramos, Darío Pereyra) or not even in the squad (Ruben Sosa)... the greatest waste of all times of in Uruguayan football history. That squad, with a proper coaching, could have won the 1986 WC instead of the very poor performance shown (semi-finals would have been the minimum acceptable given the talent available). Proof of that is that during the 80's, out of the World Cup, Uruguayan national team and clubs were the most successful in the world, winning 2 Americas Cup (1983-1987), the only World Champions Championship or "Mundialito" ever disputed (1981), 4 times Libertadores Cup champions (1980, 1982, 1987, 1988), and 3 times FIFA Club World champions (1980, 1982, 1987), our top players were considered superstars everywhere they played... 33 years later, it still hurts.
I was dissapointed with the Uruguayan team in this World Cup. They had such brilliant players. If they could only gel. I had the same dissapointing feeling about the Dutch team 4 years later. Such brilliant players, but not much to show for it

no era tan lento, el problema con este mundial fue el calor ,muchos partidos se jugaron en el verano mexicano a la siesta con temperaturas a veces superiores a los 40 grados , por los convenios televisivos etc. todos los equipos lo padecieron y maradona sacaba ventaja por habilidad mas que por velocidad aun siendo rapido , en condiciones normales por ejemplo liga italiana de la epoca se jugaba bastante mas rapido y maradona sacaba ventaja igual .saludos
