Athenar is unchallenged. His musical knowledge and diversity is vast. And remember kids, even brutal death metal can trace it's origins back to the blues and classical.
Metal in general can be traced to blues, but brutal death metal and death metal in general is a significant break away from the harmony/form of blues. In fact, so is Nü metal!!
Mental Funeral was the first Autopsy album I bought, on the cover art alone, and it’s still my favorite to this day. In my top 5 favorite death metal albums ever, in fact. Severed Survival is one of my least favorite from the band’s catalog.
Talking of Youngstown, Ohio.. Athenar bought a WARFARE 7" off me when his old band BOULDER played at the 2nd STONER HANDS OF DOOM fest held at the Nyabinghi venue back in 2000. I remember he wasn't sure if he already had that 7" , but he still bought it. Good taste, Sir.
I'm a 55 year old metal head, purchased Venom's Black Metal way back in 82' from an independent store called Central Station records here in Melbourne Australia so i have been into this stuff for a long time, i remember meeting a guy back in 91' at a gig, he said to me, "have you heard the latest Autopsy, it's the best death metal album of all time" he was of course talking about Mental Funeral.

Everyone can shoot the ball from close to half court, the individual skill level is really high but the games are boring because of that and very few players have that swagger that they had back in the 80s and 90s. But I do miss the 1980s... motorhead / venom / hellhammer/ sodom/ destruction ....crossover , HC punk and metal was all aggressive... the (88-89) 1990s really changed everything. I was 20 in '91 and liked 'Mental Funeral' when it came out and still like it haha Love the low fi production.
well back in the day in the late 70's and early 80's here in south texas where mexican radio ruled the sound waves (thank God for Columbia house) and where the catholic church had a say so on what you could listen to, bands like kiss, black sabbath, iron maiden, rush, scorpions, judas priest, Led zeppelin, ac-dc and even boston were considered devil music..... and when the movie Heavy Metal came out that's when we started calling this type of music.... heavy metal in my area..... now its just classic rock.... Killer interview....
My poser encounter story: Went to my nearest record store and a guy working there had a Mercyful Fate tour shirt on and he had a spikey mohawk and tattoo sleeves. I asked him if he went to the Atlanta show and he said yeah. I said it sucks they weren’t playing 90’s tracks on that tour and he got quiet and acted like he didn’t want to talk. He then claimed they played eight encores and when I questioned him, he said he had to help customers.

You can't compare a slam band with a melodic death band nor to a old school band. By any chance have you seen the 1989 film entitled "Things"? And yes that's the actual title. Things gets my vote for worst film ever, before I found out about Things I would have said that "Rollergator" from 1996 is the worst film in existence, another ultra-terrible one from 1995 is "Baby Ghost".
