Thank you, thank you, thank you, Tara Brach and Anu Gupta ... this conversation was so beautiful and heart expanding! I was really moved by the story about the man at the Israeli-Palestinian protests in LA, who chanted "in Gaza and Tel Aviv, all children deserve to live." Wow! That really brought the matter home decisively! "Powerful" indeed.
(40 year trial lawyer) Every potential juror i questioned re bias and prejudice initially denied they had any bias or prejudice. Of course, this is an absurdity because to be a human being by definition means that by virtue of our life experience or our thoughts, we all have biases and feelings for or against someone or something. Even our wonderful host and guest on this podcast have some biases or strong feelings one way or another. The key is to recognize them- as the title here implies- to be aware or conscious of our thoughts, feelings and emotions. And then to explore and work with them. The more I work with mine, the less separation I feel from others.
Tara, I love your work and probably will not watch this video based on the title. I know you are trying to give viewers another way out here, but we are in a battle, just like the Buddha was with all the demons, but literary here, now. The better approach is to help us regulate ourselves and stop trying to make us see the other who is ourselves. Many of us are in a real danger by real foes. Maybe you just have a theoretical stake (woman) but for the rest of us it's real, just like the moments during WW2 when the Nazis were taking over. We've learned from history you can't have tea with your enemy as he is carting you off to the camps. Fight, fight, fight.
I hear you 🙏 And, as one who has just listened to the conversation, I feel it's possible that the story and self-revelation offered at 40.18 mins (maybe from 38.57 mins) might be surprising. Might be worthwhile?
Great work and inspiring thoughts on white peoples’ complacency and how it’s a ‘matter of life and death’ for black people but then I was astounded to hear protesters against Israel described as anti Semitic when plenty of Jews are against what Israel are doing and the idea that everyone should hold hands because of ‘losses on both sides’. Surely that’s the point in this conflict, like many others. The power imbalance means that the loss of life, oppression, land theft and so on are not the same on both sides. After the talk of making unconscious biases conscious in one area of life I found this lazy, insulting and disappointing and it felt like a betrayal.

Bias is a good word, usually it is judgement and this feels softer and more approachable. I am you and you are me, aloha.
