Wow superb brush playing!! Years ago I had a steady gig with a piano trio and only used brushes; it was such fun. I just found your channel via a friend when I mentioned his phrasing. He mentioned he had just found this video and pointed me here. Great lesson and we’ll presented. Bravo 👍🏻
Mark, thanks so much for watching my video and for your comment! What a treat to only pack your snare and brushes for a trio gig. Love it! I too get to do that here in Japan from time to time and it's so liberating. Sounds like you're masterful with the brushes already but if you are looking to expand your brush playing you might enjoy my brushes course jazzdrumschool.com/course/brushes-mastery-course Many thanks again for watching and please tell your friend thank you too! Keep swinging🤙
Von , I'm enjoying your lessons, a lot of good info. One outside question please, are one local kama' aina, not often you hear Aloha. Stay safe and keep the info coming. Remember, friends don't let friends clap on one and three. Aloha!
Thanks Mark! I lived in Hawaii for 16 years before moving to Japan 8 years ago. Was some of the most formative time in my musical life. I'm glad you're enjoying my lessons here. If you ever need a hand with your Jazz drumming, I'd love to help you out at Jazz Drum School: jazzdrumschool.com/ Keep swinging my friend 🤙
So this type of jazz you accent the and of 4 to end a bar? I was just watching a John Riley video where it looked like he was ending measures on 1 but I think he was playing Bop. Can you explain?
Thanks William for the question and for watching! I'm not sure what you are referring to from Master Riley but what I'm trying to share here is that focusing on counts 1 and 3 won't give our playing the swing we can achieve by emphasizing the 3rd note of the triplet and counts 2 and 4. Just like the great Elvin Jones, here's another video about his playing using this accent: ua-cam.com/video/9L16x2iXdkQ/v-deo.html if we move away from always landing our playing phrases on count one, we can give the music insane forward motion. I hope this helps and many thanks again. Keep swinging my friend 🤙
@@jazzdrumschool Sorry I am a novice. I guess my question is when you trade 4s for instance is there a good way to come back into the groove after you do your solo as to not confuse the rest of the band? Do you accent the 1 or the and of 4 or does it just depend on the song and specific jazz style? Thanks for your help.
