Hi, my name is Davi, I'm from Brazil and I've been watching your videos for a long time. It's great to see you talking about our rhythms and drummers like Portinho. Also look for new generation drummers like Rafael Barata (I suggest the Rosa Passos album called É Luxo Só), Edu Ribeiro (from the group Trio Corrente, I suggest the Cd Song For Maura with Paquito D'Rivera) and Cleber Almeida (look for the Albertinho de Fole Novo at Cleber's presentation at Sesc)
Hi Davi Thanks for commenting. Yes...I have heard all of them and they are great. I always have to give props to the artists who started it all and Portinho is one of them and Dom Um Romao is another. They paved the way!
@@rickdior certainly! Others very important for Samba Jazz were Milton Banana and Edson Machado. For the northeastern rhythms in the context of Jazz we have Nenê and Márcio Bahia. Thanks for everything, great job, I've been learning a lot!
Listened again, truly knocked back by this... I think I need your book lol. I downloaded Rumba para monk ... looking forward to playing that now. Love your playing and open attitude towards music.... Thanks again Mr Dior
Actually speaking of turning the snare off, that's what I do when I play Latin Songs. I like to do it so that it emulates both a clave and a timbale. And not only that but it makes the bass drum sound like a bomba.
What a great resource on a specific subject that I was looking for... I'm a huge Elvin fan met him once and have him a hug lol.... I really don't like the cheesey bossa type limp rhythms you get on some jazz tunes.... I was looking for a more authentic way of incorporating Latin into the post bop jazz band I play in. This is perfect 👌 thank you so much for your knowledge and insight.
Hi Dominik There are lots of recordings he is on but here are my favorites. Some are on spotify. MANFREDO FEST - Braziliana, Jungle Cat, and Fascinating Rhythm (on the DMP label I think) PAQUITO D'RIVERA - Why Not TANIA MARIA - Come With Me and Made In New York (concord) ELIANE ELIAS - Paulistana CLAUDIO RODITI - Slow Fire and Return to Ipanema MICHEL LEGRAND - Le Jazz Grand
@@rickdior hi. Rick. I am from Argentina. Great video!! You told about Manfred fest. I use to listen his trío when i was a kid. My father had old records. If you have time check out in youtube a tune called SEVENGUANCO from my New album called Bussy Birds. Its about what you just taught in this video.
Thank you for this, Rick! I have a project which includes Chick Corea tune "Spain". I have a rock/fusion -based background so I kind of have a weaker spot in this kind latin jazz approach. I think the fast pattern with baiao bass drum would be the one to practise for that tune. It will be fun! Although that groove requires fast jazz ride technique but it is a bonus. Thanks again!
Yes....that pattern would definately work for Spain on the head and solo section. You can also switch to straight samba in the solo section if your foot can handle it but don't play the BD too loud. You should listen to the original on Chick's Light as a Feather (Airto) as well as his later versions and even Al Jarreau's version with Steve Gadd is fun.
Hi Pierre The sticks I use on drum set are made for me by Vic Firth. They are a custom stick that I designed and are not available to the general public. When I started doing clinics for them in the early 1990's I made a deal with Neil Laravee and he sent me enough to last the rest of my life. They are kind of a cross between an SD9 and a Bolero tip and are a hair longer and a bit thinner then the Bolero.
Hi Rick, I REALLY enjoy your videos. I'm getting back into drumming after a 33-year absence, and I'm watching a lot of drum videos to catch up on the wonderful world of drumming (I'm an old-fashioned rudimental swing drummer). However, Latin drumming has always been a weak point for me, so I really learned a lot from this video. Thank you so much. I have just one question. Could you re-record this with your voice volume turned up? Even with headphones I have a hard time hearing your voice. I have to have the volume way up to hear you, then I have to be fast and turn it down when you start drumming. Other than that, this is GREAT. Again, Thank You.
Hi Bill Sorry you are having trouble hearing. I will try to turn up my voice in the future even though I can't stand the sound of it. I record these videos with one microphone so if I am feeling mellow I tend to mumble. Thanks for Watching. Rick
The difference becomes real clear watching Rick. This is not a youtube drummer. This is a professional drummer.
The quality Rick presents & the history is total inspiration. Thanks 😎
Very nice information

6:30. I'm back Rick! I play in a 1940s dance band. Sometimes you just gotta play the straight 4! Ideally not though. ❤️

Hi Rick, please tell us the exact Portinho albums you checked out. Heard him a few times when he was on Tour in Germany, great player.

Excellent lesson Rick!!!... In your opinion how important is it to play clave on the drumset?
Hi Alex
If you want to play Afro Cuban music it is essential.
@@rickdior I was afraid you would say that... Hehehe... Many thx Rick!
What is that rudiment @ 8:50?
That's not a traditional rudiment. That is a left hand buzz stroke.
@@rickdior it sounds really foreign. Do you have or know of a good instructional video for it?
Hey, Rick, what the sticks you are using here ? Any way to find, maybe get them ?

@@rickdior thanks for answering ! Are they made of maple as well ?
Yes, they are maple
