    You did very good for your first time! Raise the box til you feel the material shift, then roll forward and trip the latch and watch your spread!
    The guy loading is very gentle, hardly shook the truck! Smooth and even!

      watching to learn again, I did this a bunch 30 is years ago with a friends dump truck, a 1963 Ford with 12 foot bed, now wanting one of my own, but not done this in so long trying to get reacquainted.

    First tip : raise the box till you hear the stone shift if you have the the window down you can hear it slide and hit the gate start the truck moving before popping the gate for a smooth start to the spread. second: on the last load did it feel like the truck was surging if so you had the box too high cause the stone to get stuck at the gate then breaking free leaving a pile then a thin spot and repeating till the gate isn't over loaded.

    Always watch out for power lines and tree limbs . Never let a customer talk you into doing anything unsafe. Be very aware of your lean. Mine flipped over the other day and it was a flat grade. We had had a lot of rain, ground was soft on right side of driveway. Flipped so fast I didn't have time to think. Almost got fired, whew. Great job 1st time. My first, SEVERAL, I was none to proud of. Again, GREAT JOB, Driver!!!

    Bigrig18, listen for load shift then go, if spreading thin or cant raise bed high a little burp of the throttle will shift load to keep flow going. Already better than a few guys I ran with. Next lesson "backing over grade stakes"

  • @DigginLife21

    🔥Those were great spreads for anyone...experienced or not. I raise the bed until I hear the load slide back against the tailgate...then raise it about one more foot. About 40 feet along I raise the bed the rest of the way up to keep it consistent. Lay with it Chris!!!

    man, i miss working in a sand pit like this. loading trucks, feeding the crushers, doing repair work on the machinery, and driving about in an L180g, L220h, cat 980h or whatever i'd be assigned to that day. was a fun job.

  • @oldmill322
    @oldmill322 3 роки тому

    Nice job, crushed limestone is one of the easiest materials to spread, I don't mean that in a bad way, regular road gravel in michigan is sticky and wants to plug up in the tailgate. I like how you backed over your first spread and then started moving forward to tie onto the first spread. I spent 30 years driving and spreading with gravel trains in Michigan, two trailers one truck doing what you did. Spread the pup, back up and spread the lead over the tongue while still hooked up. You do a great job with your videos.

  • @trevorannen
    @trevorannen 5 років тому +1

    As a driver that does this on a regular basis i can say you did a good job a general rule of thumb is about the second ram little more or till you feel the load shift but not to much or youll lock the gate if you get to much weight on it

  • @nemo227
    @nemo227 5 років тому +2

    At 4:30, "I've never spread stone before so . . . " Maybe not with a dump truck but a couple of years ago you did a masterful stone/gravel spreading job on a parking area with the skid steer. It was artistry.

    I always raised the bed, until you feel the rock shift and hit the tailgate. Then roll forward, with the lift going up. And did a many loads backing up. When doing a driveway, that I had to start in the main road. And back through trees. Works great after you do it a time or 1000.
    One like that big Cat was what loaded me Thursday. Don't take long with those to get a load.

  • @clydeacor1911
    @clydeacor1911 5 років тому +5

    Just lift the bed until you feel the load slightly shift and hit your tailgate that's when you know that you're high enough. Good job for your first time! You've been around them enough to get the concept, just need to hone in on your fine skills.

      The entire process is very similar to when my wife backs up to the dining chair I have pulled out and am holding as my wife starts to slowly ease into her chair. Her hamstring muscles work smoothly until 65% to 70% of butt weight physics takes control and the remaining 30% -35% of motion increases and becomes a free fall to an abrupt stop

    Dont feel bad. Been driving a dump for about 10 yrs now... Havent gated a thing, So yes I too am a bit nervous too if asked. This video is almost 2 yrs old Bet you've gotten better. For me asking questions how to do it or watch videos such as this DOES help.

  • @maineman11
    @maineman11 5 років тому +1

    I would have tightened up the chain a little, but you have a grader on sight, so you're in good shape. Tip: if you don't want or can't have the bed up higher, remember that you can always stab the throttle to start the material sliding towards the gate. Otherwise, not a bad job for your first 3 times. Might make you a driver yet, Chris.

    I find it is usually best to have the truck moving and the dump up a good ways, so when you get to the area you want to drop it over, it comes out smooth. From the looks of that drive, they need it on thick. I've seen some bad first times. This was fine.

    Take the bed up til you hear the rock slide then lower it alittle then get rolling pop the gate and watch your rear Conners. Take the bed up and at the end band the once to clear the floor of the truck bed. How I do it and been in a dumptruck for 20 years but I do the same with a back dump trailer but slower they can flip over on there side easy. Good video.

    Get box in air a little more and you’ll have it! I first learned how to spread stone with a rope I had to pull to trip tailgate. You did great I’ve seen seasoned truck drivers leave me piles two feet high!

  • @stephangiroux1435

    Not bad for time tailgating. I always found around the second stage of the hoist was the sweet spot

    • @schafn
      @schafn 4 роки тому

      Each truck has its own sweet spot. I had a 1972 Mack with a scissor lift and I had a benchmark on the lift for when to put the truck in gear and open the tailgate. I don't know what trucks are like these days but the Mack didn't have live hydraulics. You had to have the clutch out for the PTO to work and raise the box. Once the box was in position you had to put it in whatever gear you wanted depending on how thick you wanted the rock to spread. Then you'd ease the clutch out and when the truck started moving flip the switch for the tailgate. About then you'd better have the lever pulled to raise the box too.

    We called that stone ( with fines in it, grade 8 ) I’ve hauled 1000s of loads . As far as spread dumping goes for the most part , as long as you don’t leave a huge pile where you start off at and you put it down fairly close well , that’s good. Go get another load. Man, times have changed, I never saw a tire washer in a gravel pit. Fancy .

    Don't know why so many drivers trip then go,in that situation back past your start point,hoist to start height,right gear,right chain setting,up to speed then trip just before end of last spread,time it,constant revs/speed= nice even thickness and don't be in to much of a hurry putting up ya hoist. Exactly the same truck and trailer spreading,hoists up,speed,chain setting,trip ya trailer,count-time it,trip ya truck,hoists not up to quickly,watch everything around you, everything that's happening, go again!
