One day for the sheer hell of it, and i am by no means a fan of his mediocre drumming, i tried the Lars Ulrich model from Tama.. It sounded like scrap yard metal.. I'm sure John's snare sounds good, but it's true purpose is the music it serves..
Mike Portnoy uses his signature models every show/session in the studio. I too own one and this thing just is fantastic. The 3-way strainer is a neat extra.

The Lars isn't all that bad it just depends on the head. I used kevlar and then Aquarian high energy.
