There's a lot of talk about whether Google likes AI content or not, especially because of their rules on spam. So, we're diving into an experiment where we'll use ChatGPT to try and rank #1 on Google in less than an hour.
We’ll share the whole process, from picking the right keywords to tweaking our content for that top spot on Google. It's all about finding out if small changes can really lead to big wins.

Sam, this was great. I love the theatrics. As someone who does a lot of testing with date time stamps, I'd suggest using some controls to isolate some of those variables. Just changing the date has an impact but it's your competitors that rank you not Google, so date becomes more essential in queries where dates are important. Single controlled variable testing with dates in non date important queries, we find it less important until you hit a threshold. Date can quantify help accuracy of information and definitely improves CTR. Not sure who your guest was but I also agree with him that the passage ranking system might need more help getting processed. I love the reinforcement that AI doesn't kill websites humans do :)

Try to partly rewrite a lower ranking article with chatgpt and try to rank it higher that way.

I still dislike how you made the flashy title. Although it gets my attention. You can't compare ranking from DR0 with ranking from high DA. And you know it. Hardest part is your foundation articles that have to be done right. But I think the takeaway is, use your brain while using Chatgpt and don't just lean on it 100%.

And inexperienced bloggers would think that they can do the same (EASILY). I just feel that it is unrealistic showing off using a high DA website. How many of us have access to such a highly ranked domain just to test it? There are no magic in this. How about showing us how you rank an ai article to #1 off a DR0 website? Because this is what new bloggers are worrying about. How to even rank 1 article to Page 1.
very misleading and clickbaity. First off, you are publishing content on a very high authority site. so ranking is almost guaranteed. Try this experiment with a run of the mill blog , not ahrefs, and see how it goes.

when it comes to the updated date - are they reading the date right off the page, or is it pulled from the wordpress publication date. Something is strange here - surely they can compare page versions to see if there have been changes... and if they are reading it off the page, anyone could spoof that without actually editing the content.

So this only works for articles has been picked as a snippet in the past right? Not the new ones or the sites never get picked for rich cnippets.
No, it works for the articles that already rank in the top 10 because Google picks up snippets among the top 10 articles.

If you're using WordPress, you just go to Edit post and choose "custom date". Then you're requesting indexing in GSC. Here's an article about indexing: ahrefs.com/blog/google-index/

Changing date doesn't help. Correlation is not causation.
It definitely is a ranking factor. An updated date tells Google that the information is still relevant, however changing the date ONLY will not cause you to go up in rank.
I agree...the blog secton of Ahrefs is on WordPress and any SEO plugin will automatically change the "LastModified date" on the blogpost schema markup when you edit the content.

@@AhrefsCom change the front date how you want but just saying that it is not changing the frontend Date is the reason that Google acknowledges the update, but in a blog post especially on WordPress...the edit date in the schema markup changes automatically when you click "update" via "LastModified" in the schema which Google crawls. After all, Google came up with the schema markup along with Bing Yahoo and Yandex.

While I like your content, this one is a bit misleading, isn't it? Edit: tremendously was too strong. I changed that. I was just expecting to see new ChatGPT content ranking #1 within an hour, not taking a well established post on a (you know what's coming) very high DR/DA domain and adding text to it. You may have ranked number 1 in Google within an hour (I find this very hard to believe) but you won't stay number 1. Google recognises AI content and will devalue it. If you want to rank highly longterm, don't use AI content. Write your own content and stop being lazy.
