And they did this exact maneuver like three times - each time crashing into the other boats...unbelievable. Damage would have been so much less if they just kept drifting into the other ones.
After 5 years of sailing on courses, cruises and 2,5 years of working as an instructor on inland sailboats (with tiller and outboard engine so no prop walk and rudder delay) I can tell I am beginning to comprehend how to use wind in my favor and maneuver profficiently and only now I am even entertaining a thought to rent a keelboat. Besides, in such strong winds I'd look for a covered harbour or plan my route in such a way to already be docked when it starts to blow
The IOLI catamaran on the right is in Perfect condition. We sailed on June21 with it 😂🤣 The Skipper on the Kontiki was in absolute stress Situation and didnt stop the Engine or was drunk 🥳
At this point probably best to just beach the boat before you do any more damage! But seriously, take her back out to the middle of the bay. Put the boat in neutral and take a breather.
Even better, go out into the bay and drop the anchor (with a lot of chain out) and wait for a professional crew from the charter company to take over. The yacht needs to be taken round to Kilada and lifted out asap coz that propeller's toast after chewing up the other yacht's chain!
@@ionutstoica-gion he did not drop the anchor at all, he should have done that before he even attempted to dock the boat. It is the first thing you do when you want to do a Med mooring.
Best conditions to dock a boat in Ermioni here. The wind comes from the front, so they only had to drop the anker 15 meters before they entered the gap and they would have been drifted to the pier slowly and save. But they forgot to drop the anker first, so the conditions went from perfect to shitty in seconds.
If you rent a 52 feet boat, with a weight (displacement) of around 14-15 tonnes, you can NOT be a bloody amateur. It seems to me that these people were not used to sailing boats at all. They think they have rented a car - with plenty of space for all the people. What could possibly go wrong? Well, almost everything. Many of the maneuvres are just...insane. As Kris Sanders pointed out below, the starboard turn with full speed ahead at 1:25 is among the worst I've seen.
Bow thruster to starboard is also wrong ... He had almost entered the bow. He could give the engine a little ahead and rudder to the right and was free. At that point he kept himself with the fenders on the sides and then calmly he could go out. (sorry for my English)
In the Med, they do what's called a "Med Moor", you drop the anchor and back in to the seawall, then tie off to it. That way you can fit 2 - 3 boats in compared to one tied up broadside to the dock. It can be a tough maneuver (especially for new boaters) when the wind picks up but you put out a bunch of fenders and everyone helps out. I don't think anything would have helped out this crew except for never getting on the boat in the first place. And you look closely, the crew seem to be wearing company uniforms, which is a bit scary. But yes, it made me cringe!
I can relate to the anxiety of reversing to the dock, but this example is plain insane. It is even a fin keeled boat which is relatively responsive to helm and easy to handle compared to longer keel boats. If there was an instructor on the boat or nearby he/she should have taken the lead before the start of this video.
I believe that you are unfortunately found in such situation, best solution was to stop engine, take the ropes, help from involved boats and slowly find solution to pull your boat to position when it can be parked and wait for better conditions.
Four beautiful boats trashed. Who would give a £400,000 52ft 15 Tonne yacht to a bloke who turns up with an International Certificate of Competence (ICC). You can sit your ICC on a flat calm day on a 35ft yacht. That doesn't train you for the situation in this video. In the Med you line up and drop your anchor at the start of reversing in, his was still on the bow. On the SailGreece website it says "All our boats are in perfect condition" - not any more!!
Kontiki was already anchored and tied to the shore like half an hour before, I even took the ropes from them - this skipper wanted to leave as the guy next to him started to panic if the wind start blowing it will push kontiki on his yacht (much smaller)... it doesnt explain what he did after catching the first chain though. As for perfect condition of greek charter boats - i'm not moving without a tool box ;)
@@piotrswirkowski7422 He left because he got his anchor dragged out/lost the anchor hold and his boat was staying/pushing on the yacht on his portside, a 45 ft yacht, smaller boat, and when he left probably because seeing he lost his anchor instead of just putting engine on slow forward, and wait for me to start my engine put in forward to be able to let may anchor down he just threw both mooring lines and and went full throttle on ... the rest in self explanatory
At 0:35 the guy is in the box and relatively safe. Just the wrong way around. But this is much better compared to what comes later. He made damage to not one, but to 4 boats. I wonder if the insurance wil pay this at all. This could have been the most expensive vacation ever. - At 2:00 he again is in the box, but most likely he wants to escape as the other crews would have killed him for sure.
J'ai été profondément malade de voir ce chaos....on a envie de secouer les gars et de les jeter par dessus bord! Un cauchemar avec une équipe sans aucune connaissance!
Being Greek, we call the Med mooring just “mooring”. It’s a pretty easy procedure even with side winds given the fact that one has done it a couple of times. These guys obviously are under qualified and or 🥴
finished rams. who charters them a yacht? No sailing skills. They should lose their sailing license. And, of course, cover the cost of the damage, out of pocket, not from the insurance policy
You’re still responsible for your actions and you will have to pay for the damage… But there is no license required to drive a private boat. If you are renting a boat, the rental company usually want to see some kind of certificate that you have enough knowledge before they let you drive away.
Either drunk, total beginner with any common sense or he did it intentionally because he loves bumper car riding. The amount of mistakes too many to list here, its just pathetic.
For some reason in Europe boats park stern to the dock, what makes this chaos very frequent in windy days. Here in the USA we dock in berths or side ties and I've never seen this in 50+ years sailing!
@Kendall Smith These are obviously charter boats. In Europe, which means the renters most likely have a license or other certification. They didn't choose the boats they are chartering. Clearly the people docking are incompetent.
I believe this is the most painful video I've seen in a long time!
It's the full starboard turn while at full throttle @ 1:25 that is just insane to me. They headed straight into another boat... This is nuts.
And they did this exact maneuver like three times - each time crashing into the other boats...unbelievable. Damage would have been so much less if they just kept drifting into the other ones.
they did a port turn.. they didn't realize the boat turns around it's center, with aft moving to starboard..

Been there. Place deceptively looking easygoing. The swell on these docks is ferocious. But the helmsman on the boat must have been on ouzo?

Being on one the boats that was hit i can atest to that, they wear tshirts uniform style branded sail camp since 2016.

pure sadness
Looks like one of the out of control Persian boats at the battle of Salamis.

No. You go below and get the shotgun then went him if tries again you start shooting.
Oh yes...nothing like a calm and stress free vacation,ey? ;)
Nice
No words to say! Without even reading a sailing book or practice, people try to sail or dock. They hire a sailing boat and here is the result.
After first pass I would not want to dock next to those boats anyway, they would be fully justified in beating the crap out of that guy
Why?
We’ve moored there in much worse weather - they obviously didn’t know what they were doing.
😳😬 what a nightmare!!!
Whoever was doing the captaining on Kontiki.... This person should never be allowed near a boat, or in a marina.... ever again....
They should just receive training

That's not THE Kon Tiki, I'm guessing. Or even the Leaky Tiki...
They might be a bit less welcome after such a deficit in seamanship.

The craziest part is that the 4 crew on board all wear the same polos leading me to believe they are hired crew and not vacationers...
Those are effects of bought licences without any competition and experience.

Nothing short of criminal damage. What happened next?
Port police involved - paperwork exchanged. Gotta be the worse boat handling I've ever seen.

You have not seen much of Europe, my friend. I can tell..
docking stern_in is not a problem if you know how to maneuver your boat.
That's because the U.S. has harbors. The Mediterranean, by and large, has tiny cramped anchorages with little protection
