  • During a one day layover in the area of Albany, New York, between parts 1 & 2 of my Train Odyssey 3, I visited Ticonderoga, NY, and saw the Star Trek Set Tour (see my video on that) and also historic Fort Ticonderoga and Mount Defiance, the subject of this video.

I grew up not far from the fort-had a great uncle who maintained the grounds for over 30 years. I’m now a contributor to the association for preservation. Back in the 60’s-70’s this was a huge attraction for kids and sadly don’t see any on your walk thru. The cannons have been green forever, the mounts have been repainted. Mt Defiance was open as an attraction for years till a fire destroyed the center or lodge on the property, its been closed for years. I’ve got photos of my parents on the grounds during the 50’s @that time you could sit on the cannons, walk the walls etc, different times then. Great video.

That's awesome y'all were lucky! I live in Rutland county and want to get pictures of all the walls and left over structures I see them all over he mountain on old maps its amazing actually because the fort across from mount-defiance, mount-Independence, you can see older maps have star forts on all along the base and top, which would be vermonts side of the border. You can't see any photos on google of the one in Vermont though I want to explore that, it seems that all these forts and smaller buildings were all built as one larger fort crossing the river and on more than 2 mountains with so many smaller walls and terraforming of the land around the star forts, which is odd because they all have different stories and explanations of when they were built with the one in Vermont having no current history at all in Vermont. These star forts I've found out span the entire world in literally every continent each and every one given different narratives. Would you mind showing me some the photos of the walls that'd be dope! I'd love to get some photos of the one in Vermont

First time to Lake George was summer 1956. Many photos, slides and movies. One of my dear memories was Fort Ticonderoga. My love of history became one of my PhDs. Thanks to my dear parents, of righteous memory.
    Thanks for this vid!!

"Bit of a stretch"? Regarding artifacts and display to the USS Ticonderoga CV14. And yes they offer wonderful tours and there are many interpretive docents, many in period dress. Don't be so darn negative. The foundation has done amazing things, maybe watch some of the informative webcasts their youtube channel has? From the ground up is great series or learn about the gardens.

I had almost forgotten my trip in upstate NY in 1994. I had included the fort at Crown Point. One of my favorite drives ever was coming from Ticonderoga on NY highway 9 along Lake George during autumn. Thanx.

Wow looks very cool! Apparently the Amtrak Adirondack goes here from Albany but I guess it's much more convenient with a car.

Sadly it looks as though whomever is responsible for the Fort has let it fall into disrepair. I was there some 62 years ago as a 13 year old and many of the cannons have been removed and they must have hired some "interior" decorator to paint the cannon bases those awful colors. They were Not that way when I was there. Granted, age does take it's toll, but upkeep of an important part of history certainly deserves more natural upkeep and care! Sorry you didn't get to see it as it was some 60 plus years ago.

I enjoyed seeing that part of the states. It's hard to see the country through the tree's.

America has a lot of trees. Many a farmers worked days to clear trees to create the fields to grow crops, especially on the east coast. Many Europeans I know who have visited America are surprised how hilly to mountainous the area north and west of New York City and the east coast of America are...

Darrell English, I think you meant "private hands", but yes, I think Fort Ticonderoga is indeed privately owned, and operated by a non-profit foundation. I don't know the ownership of Mount Defiance.
