I live close to Lombard Hobbies. Best prices on train stuff I have ever seen. The owner is disabled - needs a cane to walk slowly - but shows up to work every day. He just lives to make customers happy.
This is my favorite What's Neat ever! I just finished watching it for a second time and absolutely love how he making the trestle. How he explains how he does all the different parts makes it seem not as daunting. I have always wanted to build a trestle and even bought a bent. Thank you again Ken. You inspire all of us!!
That trestle bridge video was amazing! The long form instructional format was great, and then the temporary snow on top was genius! Looked so real. At first I was surprised how long this video was but it flew by it was so good! I think this was my favorite What's Neat, Ken!! Beautiful work and great video!
Ken, I don't know if the RGS did things differently than other railroads or not. The Cap, (topmost cross piece) for most RRs was a chunk of wood the same size as the Piling, in your case 12 X 12. However the pilings where not cut at the next and other cross pieces (Sashes) The sashes where made from 12" X 3" or 4" and bolted to the Pilings. I would think that the way you did it, cutting pilings in two at every story, would produce a week Bent!
Your meticulous work and attention to every detail is truly admirable. It also makes me glad I model fictional scenes, because I do not have your level of patience. Thanks for sharing this masterpiece.🙂
Everything about this was fantastic, using plexi to essentially build a jig so you can crank out trestles, heck even carving out the foam to put pieces of wood in there so you have a nailing/gluing surface for the plywood wrap just blew my mind in a "why didn't I think of that?" manner. Thanks tons.
That jig for the bents is state of the art. Black Bear went out of business in 2018. The rest of the project is so cool. All your work is so nice! Keep it up.
Hello. Thank you for showing this video. This is a very impressive project with a lot of realistic details. You must have a high level engineering skills to build this model railroad diorama. You are very talent. Keep up the good work. 👍👌
We are collecting the wood to eventually model the Goat Canyon Trestle just East of San Diego. You can drive to smaller versions all built the exact same way as the Goat Canyon. Will probably do it in O gauge. Maybe we'll do both! I need to do some research on those who built this railway.
all i can say is WOW......I scratch build 1-10 scale vehicles and im all about detail but you are a super great model master my hats of to you SIR IM NOT A RAILROADER BUT I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS believe it or not your videos help me to be a better builder
Kudos to Ken for all the research and effort put into the construction of the beautiful RGS trestle. I enjoyed watching your progress through this video ........ very impressive! Thank you for the excellent tutorial. Mike
Ken, sir, take a bow. I have followed you here for years, from when i got back into modelling when living in MN and these past 9 years since returning to Ireland and continuing in my hobby of choice, but this episode of #What'sNeat has just blown me away. Your skill, your engineering and artistry is simply outstanding. Thanks for giving us this insight and enthusiasm.
Well Ken, that was spectacular. Thanks for sharing the templates and how to use them and all of the modeling methods you used. Almost had a heart attach when you used the hose in the end but obviously you knew it would be okay from all of your experience. Great diorama and photo.
Absolutely beautiful bridge and definitely loved the explanation of how you did things on various phases of construction. This was a very helpful and insightful video. Probably one of the best in a while I gave seen about actually building models.
That was a big project. Your job is so realistic that remind me a guy in mid 1970 .peoples call him the Wizard of Monthery. John Allen. He made scenery lyke real.
What an amazing job, Ken. Thank you. By the way, the reason the torch gets rid of the bubbles in the resin is because the heat expands the air in the bubbles and that expansion causes the bubbles to burst. Just wanted you to know.
Thank You so much for showing us how you built the trestle! That's a lot of work & research on the trestle! I know you are a perfectionist! Just outstanding! I love The Bachmann trains! Those steam engine train sets are just outstanding! Thank You Mr. Blaine! I'm going to buy those ho Christmas train cars for my wife's Christmas train! She will be happy! "Happy Wife...Happy Life" Great runbys Ken! This is "The Best Hobby In The World" Till Next Time! MoPac Jack " Stay Safe & Keep It On The Rails" Rock N'Roll Forever.. Merry Christmas from Kirkwood, Missouri!
I’ve never scratch built anything now with my layout I have three bay wharfs and 4 trestle bridges of varying size that I have to scratch build and it’s the trestle supports themselves I’m so hesitant on doing
Good morning Mr. Patterson, how are you doing this fine morning? Hey, I have a question sir about the name of the Jan/Feb 1986 magazine you mentioned at the beginning of your trestle jig build. I have listened several times and I can't make out the name other than the word Gazette. Could you please tell me the name so I can try to find a copy for myself? Thank you kind sir.
@@davefield5538 Thank you Mr. Field, after I bought the 1986 magazine, I found out that I had in fact wrote the wrong date in my message to Mr. Patterson, then I used that same date when I bought the single magazine, lol. I went back to Ebay and found someone selling the entire year of 1987 and bought them. I am looking forward to building a couple of these jigs for my brother and I. Have a great Christmas sir.

oh man building this by scratch. You must have the patience of a saint. Outstanding work ....

I have an old Model Railroader that has the Gorre and Dafeted layout in it. The trestle on that setup was beautiful

Absolutely Beautiful Job! I learned a lot for building the trestle for my layout.
That was a big project. Your job is so realistic that remind me a guy in mid 1970 .peoples call him the Wizard of Monthery. John Allen. He made scenery lyke real.
John was indeed a champion...
But this trestle is also a masterpiece.
I absolutely love the work you put into this Ken! Keep up the good work and God Bless!
Would Love to see the cover of the books clearly. It will help in my research to build bridges.
Beautiful work on that I must say, impressive
What an amazing job, Ken. Thank you. By the way, the reason the torch gets rid of the bubbles in the resin is because the heat expands the air in the bubbles and that expansion causes the bubbles to burst. Just wanted you to know.
This episode is a happy accident for me Ken. Thanks to you, I figured out how to make my semi mountain diorama for my OBB class 310 steam loco.
Thank you for showing the trestle of your garden layout
Some very serious modelling going on here - stunning! Joachim

Excellent trestle build! I learned so much...
I’ve never scratch built anything now with my layout I have three bay wharfs and 4 trestle bridges of varying size that I have to scratch build and it’s the trestle supports themselves I’m so hesitant on doing
Did a quick search, seems Black Bear is out of business. Did any other business pick up the jig-maker tool and is it available today? Thanks.
I second that question
Wow. Great video. Did you post this video 8-10 years ago when you created it?
Good job on the tutorial! Just out of curiosity where did you find that Rio Grande steam train?
How do you keep the glue from sticking to the jig?
Jig it
You're a god damn genius!
Just out of curiosity, how did it turn out with Blackstone?
It's too bad that Bachmann doesn't have a three rail O gauge offering in sets.
Answer: The Narrow Gauge and Shortline Gazette
It was the 1987 issue.
@@davefield5538 Thank you Mr. Field, after I bought the 1986 magazine, I found out that I had in fact wrote the wrong date in my message to Mr. Patterson, then I used that same date when I bought the single magazine, lol. I want your job :)
Me too.....k
What kind of wood are you using?
Pine
So I take it that the model company that hired you didn't get their photo on time?
lol..lol...
i love rio grande
Rio grande z scale.
I'm not a fan of constant narrative, I'm more a 'show, don't tell' sort of viewer but a good build all the same, thanks😊
Hand held cams sucks
Mad Skills !!!!!!!
