My father and I spent so many hours of my childhood building Estes rockets and we had the 110 camera. I have no idea where any of the photos are, if they exist. He passed away 10 years ago today -- I am typing this just about to the hour was when he had his second post surgery heart attack in the hospital. Those kits of cardboard and balsa were launched by us on Figure Eight Island and Singer Island, both of which had large empty lots at the time, now covered in houses. They hung on fishing line from pins in the ceiling of my bedroom. Good memories. Thank you for the video.
Whoa! After having found your channel I spent my time binge watching your progress and I'm deeply impressed by your workmanship. I learned so much from you by just watching. Your massive layout is beautiful and inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
My 9 year old son and I love your videos, we were away at Christmas and missed this one, just getting to see it now. Great job, and thanks for sharing.
This is the train layout of my youthful dreams from way back, but built by a master craftsman. Thanks for bringing us along on the journey. 19:45 - I had, built and flew an Estes 2 stage rocket way back in the 60's. It was a lot of fun. Sadly I never knew about the camera payloads. Thanks for the memories.
I'm 54, spent my life working with hands in, "real world" scale, this in miniature is fascinating. I'm just learning what scale to work in etc. Thank you for these great videos
Thanks for the Christmas vlog. Your attention to detail amazes me. I only wish you posted more often. The bridge is beautiful. Can’t wait for the next update. Happy New Year to you, your family and all who see this message.
I wanted the Astrocam 110 so bad when I was a kid. Amazing how technology has changed now to capture the aerial views I dreamed about getting... Cool stuff! The bridge turned out phenomenal! Thanks for sharing.
I am COMPLETELY jealous..... Reminds me of the days I had a huge HO Bachman Train layout that was controlled via Radio Micro-chips circa 1998. Bachman was Life-like upscale HO Train line..... The only thing I would add to your layout is a HO race set with a pair of road rail crossing incorporated within your layout...... Nothing like running a race while avoiding contact with passing rail cars..... Great job....
Sorry for your loss, Curt. I'm glad your wife enjoyed the content. Makes doing things like this so worth it. I am definitely committing to doing more videos.
This is truly a masterpiece and you are a master craftsman. I hope you live long enough to finish it and that I live long enough to see it finished. I’m 65.
My father was an executive officer for Southern Pacific. I've ridden many a train, had the opportunity to go into a cab forward. Of course this first crossing with this power unit made me smile. Your work is just stunning. Very much enjoy each post. Happy New Year to you.
Thanks for the bonus Model Rocket clips. As a kid I had an Astrocam and launched it many times. A friend's father bought a Cineroc, and talked to us about it extensively. We watched the first launch and camera failed to pop off the rocket so it nose dived into ground actually landing on a road surface about 100 feet from us. The camera exploded into a 1000 pieces. I recently built an Omega with my son and we launched it a few times reaching 1100 feet with a small altimeter in the payload section.
I loved the ending segment on model rocketry. as a kid in the early 80's I was big into model trains and rockets. I had an Astrocam. it made about a dozen flights before one of the plastic fins broke. I was never able to repair it successfully. However, I soon realized that most of Estes Rockets shared the same tube sizes and quickly swapped the nose on to another rocket. I believe it was a Sizzler that I had modified to use D series engines. I had some great pictures from that camera. wonder if my mother still has any of them... I will have to look. also, that is a killer train layout. and the work on the bridge is spectacular.
Thanks so much for sharing! I've read about this technique of gluing ballast 100 times in modeling magazines, but seeing it in action really cemented (pun intended) how the process works for me. Much appreciated!
Looking at the detail of the trestles makes me wish I had time to build a layout-they'd be right out front! Currently, I'm building my dream cabin, in the woods, in the mountains.
Thank you, this is very inspiring. I'd like to do this kind of thing when I create an S scale layout. I wouldn't have the skill or the space for the bridge, but I'm talking about how the rock walls/bridge supports were made and painted. The realism here is incredible. I had the Camroc!
I waited for your next update of the layout. The detail on your bridges is fabulous. Hope season three, have time for more updates, everyone to see and enjoy.
@@rcgrabbag If you don't mind me asking, just approximately how much do you have invested in your layout? Your attention to detail is spectacular so far! I'm really really looking forward to more scenery, buildings & all of the minute detail that'll go into bringing it to life! Thanks, Greg
Nice to see the update .. The bridge is phenomenal looking. As a side note... Just have our 10 year old daughter an Estes rocket kit for Christmas. Can't wait to use it in the Spring.
As a structural engineer who has designed many different types of bridges, buildings, and a bunch of other “stuff”, I must say you’re definitely on the right “track”. I wasn’t around in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s, but the meticulous effort being performed on this structure, it’s my professional opinion that the proposed bridge will withstand even a Lionel scale locomotive. Thanks for sharing.
You’ve built a magnificent trestle and it was a great use of the rock walls for the footings. I was into the rockets when I was younger but having cameras in them must have come after my time using them, what a great idea. Technology now has us able to fly drones and control the view we get in High definition, amazing. Kudos to Carl on the FSM model. I wish I had a Carl, lol. It’s always a pleasure to see the notification that a new video of yours is available, thank you.
I grew up in Hollywood CA of all places and I don’t remember how many Estes rockets I lost to various roofs of businesses that were not exactly sympathetic to my plight. Nevertheless, I will always remember how much I enjoyed assembling these rocket kits in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Especially the Star Wars X Wing Fighter that also found its way to some inaccessible roof. Thank you for sharing your vintage collection
As always a wonderful video on the ongoing layout, the bridges are spectacular and look the part even without any surrounding scenery. I'm picking up so many tips and hints from these films. The rocketry segment was amazing! I had no idea such things existed. I was a keen user of Super 8 film in my teens, the idea of shooting footage from an actual rocket would have thrilled me back in the day. Thanks for that, I'll be looking onto this further!
Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad I can help with some tips. My viewers also provide some great tips! I love the idea of rockets with cameras as well.

We did my 8th grade science project on rockets and used Estes model rockets for it with a clear payload that you could put quarters in. Basically ran 3 flights with different engines and payloads each to test how payloads affect rocket flights. Easy and fun way to do a school project with something my friend and I enjoyed, model rockets.
