He was not fake. That was all in the days before auto-tune. He was a guitar genius.
Most of the greatest guitarist in the past 50 years have credited Hendrix as being one of their most important influences. SRV said there would never be another like him. And remember he was totally ripped while performing. Every single time. His talent was phenomenal.
He didn't play guitar... he inhabited the guitar!
He had 4 pedals: a wahwah a FuzzFace, a vibrato, and an Octavia.
I mean he's not really playing with his face, it's all hammer on/off with his right hand, but it's still crazy

Eric Clapton refused to go on stage to play once in England after they let Jimi play. He knew he couldn't top what had just happened. He was playing with his TEETH. None of this was fake. It's from a live concert 😂🤣😂🤣
Most artists at the time didn't want to go on after Jimi because he was so great. BTW, Eric and Jimi were great friends up until Jimi's death.

The story is true. It starts at ERIC and ends at HAPPENED. Just because you never heard it doesn't make it a lie. I had never heard it either, untill I saw the actual film play. My comment about him playing with his teeth was in reference to the video the twins watched. Ya got it now?
I saw it a documentary. Jimi went to a small club in England to see Eric play. He was asked to play, so he did. He was so amazing Eric refused to go on stage. I don't remember the name of the documentary, as I saw it many years ago. But I was speechless at Jimi's playing. Why the heck would I lie? I love them both

I'm 70 and was around when Hendrix first hit the music scene. I fell down on my couch the first time I ever heard him and just like y'all, I went crazy. I thought there is no way to create this quality of music. Then I saw a video of him playing with his teeth, behind his back, etc and knew I had died and gone to heaven!

My 70 year old husband, a great guitarist himself, saw Hendrix play in an Arizona bowling alley before anyone had heard of him. Met him offstage and said he was incredibly nice to him and his little group of star struck teenagers. Husband still worships Hendrix as the greatest guitar god ever.

As spectacular as Hendrix was, I think he's even more impressive for getting that sound in a band with just 3 people. The essence of a "power trio."
Jimi kept it simple....A fuzz...A wah and 3 Marshall stacks set at full volume.

Y’all gotta understand, no one was playing guitar like this back then, and definitely not with that much style. He came up with the distortion sound, the wah-wag pedal. He was the one to make that popular. He was the Jordan of guitar playing, the Tiger Woods or Serena and Venus Williams sisters. He came at it ferociously and with style. This was 1967, look at the hits at that time, they didn’t sound like this.
I remember vividly walking to school back then, and Purple Haze came on the radio. Stopped me in my tracks. I was learning guitar and now my life has been all about electric guitar going back to 1965 when I got my first one. Jimi was from some other place in the Universe. He enfluenced every other roc guitar from his time until today.
Wrong, the wah wah was popularized by Clapton and the first use of distortion was used by Dave Davies from the Kinks, Davies sliced up the speaker on his amp with a razor blade to get a distorted sound for "You really got me" and George Harrison was the first to use feedback. Also Hendrix did not play the guitar upside down he was a lefty who played a right handed guitar with it strung for a lefty. And i seriously doubt that Jimi put acid under his bandanna while on stage, the man was a professional and very self conscious.
No one is playing guitar like this now, or has ever played like this since.
Actually, Jimi hardly invented or came up with new stuff, but he was the ultimate "guitar geek", he constantly checked out, read about and studied what others had done and were doing with guitar, amps, pedals, recording/producing/arranging and other things on the tech side, and on the technique side "tricks", buzz, feedback etc. He also fiddled with his equipment, went to see what others were doing live, listened to loads of records and tapes of others. But the magic with Jimi was that almost no one was doing so many things all at the same time and he took everything to another level. He was also innovative and nonconformist, even today people are still asking "why would he play those notes, or do that?".
He also played other instruments like bass, drums, keyboards and mouth organ.

He used to stick tabs of LSD in his headband so that he'd get more and more stoned as he sweat, and didn't need to take a break to keep his high going. He's not just playing with his teeth, he's probably in some other dimension while playing this.

I love to see you young brothers reacting to Jimi for the first time. I had the same reaction 53 years ago. I saw him live 3 times, and I will never forget. By the way, he was playing with his teeth!

Saw him once, Isle of Wight. I was all of 12 and the sound was so horrible you could barely tell what was happening. I remember my cousin telling me that he was from Seattle (where my parents moved from Scotland) but it didn't really register at the time. Jimi died on my father's birthday only a fortnight after.
Jimi is, to my mind, nothing short of the greatest guitarist that has ever lived and second only to Louis Armstrong as the most important American musician who has ever lived. Jimi literally changed the way we think of what the guitar can be as a lead and rhythm instrument in rock, Blues, jazz, even country music. Louis Armstrong did the same thing with the cornet in the 1920's, but Armstrong did so much more than that. Jimi changed how we think of the guitar, Louis changed how we think of music. My tuppence worth, anyway.

Not upside down. Well, the guitar was upside down but it was restrung so he was using normal fingering positions just as a right handed player would do.

Funny thing about Noel. He wasn't a bass player when he first met Jimi. Chandler knew Redding was a guitar player and asked him of he could play bass for a little jam with this "American chap". Noel said that he only agreed as a favour to Chandler but when they were done jamming, "this American chap invited me 'round the pub for a pint and asked me to join his band. That bloke was Jimi Hendrix".
@@Sergeant.Longnuts The difference between Redding/Mitchell and Cox/Miles is really an interesting comparison. The fact that Redding wasn't a 'natural bass player' like Billy Cox makes me appreciate how talented Redding really was.
You should listen to his version of the "Star Spangled Banner" if you haven't already. When the lyrics talk about the bombs bursting in the air, he makes the guitar sound like bombs bursting. He was amazing.

Rebels in their own way
Hendrix was my first concert - was promoted as the "Wall of Sound" - in Baltimore, Maryland , 1969 - I was a 17 years old white boy. Back in the day there were no computers generating music. It was all foot pedals, huge, raw amps and speakers switching stereo back and forth across the stage - incredible to experience. Every move he made on his left-hand guitar he manually performed. He was musically gifted - a true genius. He practiced every waking moment. He played behind the back and to his face (notice his fingers are playing notes on the frets when he puts it to his face. The licking and teeth were affected). My ears were bleeding after the concert and I was in the nose-bleed section in the Civic Center. I believe Hendrix was from another planet, I am here to tell you as a witness. We will never see another of his kind. 50+ years later the music still sounds current/futuristic. You have no idea. I was privileged to hear his genius and will remember him until I pass... there is no one to compare to his talent today...

@@lisaclarke643 I had already 15 years on stage in my resume^^ (started making music when I was 9)so I was used to being on stage. I was NOT used to the acid but it went fine, somehow. 6 hours later I couldn't have done it, I was pretty wasted then.

When Hendrix went to London England to start his career, the first thing he did was to go round all the clubs to see the best of the best the London scene had at the time. But he was aware of everybody, bought their records, knew what they were bringing to the table. One band he REALLY wanted to see was Cream with hot shot guitarist Eric Clapton (Yup, THAT Eric Clapton)
So his managed had arranged for Hendrix not only to be there at a performance of the band but also that he could stay after hours and jam with the band. When Hendrix took the stage he launched into the song "Killing floor" by Albert King, a song Cream always wanted to do but found it "Too difficult." After retrieving his lower jaw from the floor, Clapton watched for a few more minutes before taking his guitar off and walking away.
When Hendrix' manager caught up with him, Clapton was all antsy, going "You told me he was good, you didn't tell me he was THIS fucking good!"
After Hendrix died, Clapton adopted the Fender Stratocaster as his main guitar, in direct tribute to Jimi.

Jimi Hendrix was one of those 'matter of fact' cats. As a kid in the 60s I aspired to play guitar like 'him'. Took me 40 years to kind'a figure it out. Hendrix was an Army vet, served with the 101 Airborne. Named my second son Jimi.
I'm Irish and worked in London as a waitress over 20 years ago where they had a great old-fashioned jukebox that only the staff could play by tokens they were given. Mine were eventually taken away because the only song I liked on it was 'Hey Joe' ..
Want to really have your mind blown: from the day that he first picked up his guitar to the day he died it was barely 14 years 🤯 age 14 to 27

I love it when these younger brothers discover hendrix and other different kinds of music i almost shed a tear ; I would also encourage them to check out other great black rock acts like funkadelic, living colour and fisbone to name a few and also a lot more in that vein too ; keep searching my brothers and stay open . one love .
There's a reason Hendrix is widely considered the greatest guitarist of all time. I'm one of those that considers him the best.

@@TheGreatPresenter Not to take away from or denigrate the accomplishments of others, but to be considered even close to the best when in that kind of company is really hard. To be among giants like B.B.King, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Page, Brian May and more, is hard, to be noticed among that crowd, harder still. But to even have people debate whether you are the best even among that crowd, even within that crowd, that is the true crowning achievement.
Prince was heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix. In fact, if you look at how Jimi dressed , you’ll see that Prince got his style from him.
I'll say Prince is the result of Hendrix, James Brown (which I see through the and through) to lesser extent Kenneth Gamble philli sound. (just my opinion), Natalie.
@@mussiebeyene8834 I'd say Prince also had some Rick James influence too. Rick James really moved funk away from the more organic 70's sound to more of a "modern" 80's sound with synthesizers and whatnot.

Prince cited Santana as one of his greatest influences on the guitar. And if you listen to his guitar solos he does play much more in that sound than Hendrix's.
That said, Prince was a sponge and incorporated everything from jazz to rock to funk to pop and beyond, creating a singular yet multi-dimensional genre all his own.
As to fashion, most think of Prince's look from the 1999 through Purple Rain vibe which does give a huge nod to Hendrix. But that is only a 4 year period of an almost 40-year career. He was a chameleon, changing his look repeatedly with each phase/project.
You are right Natalie, Prince was a fan of Hendrix and definitely influenced by him as were many other famous guitarists. I just want to point out a few bits of information to the young listeners, Jimi played with his teeth; he was not the first but he popularized it. Keep in mind, the sound you hear from his guitar was unheard of back in those days. He experimented with his Fender Strat, he used unwanted sounds like feedback, hum & buzz. No one else did that. The guitar sound being played by other rock stars back then, did not sound like Jimi’s. He was ahead of his time and perhaps he is the greatest Rock Music guitarist of all time, a true legend.
Jimi Was so much more than just a fancy guitar player, his music was full and complete and wholesome, his messages and what he taught to generations is almost unrivaled, especially with guitar. A true one of a kind,and humble person

I first saw Jimi Monterey Pop one night in 69 on television. It was the first time I’ve seen anyone roll on floor while playing a guitar. My jaws dropped. I wanted to be like him, playing behind his back. He made that make sounds I’ve never heard before. The next bay I went to the pawn shop and bought a cheap guitar for $12. I was 14 years old.
In the 70s one of my roommates was in the service with Jimi Hendrix, He used to tell about how Jimi was playing guitar every free moment he had.
Jimi Hendrix was one of the 27 years club : Robert Johnson, Brian Jones, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse - all died at 27.

These brothers are so lucky....I’m jealous that they are at the beginning of their Hendrix “Experience”......if you ever meet anyone who has never heard Hendrix I recommend sit them in a comfortable chair with a drink and play at maximum volume A Band of Gypsies Live at the Fillmore....at his peak.
The studio version is absolutely lovely to hear and has background singers adding to the effect.
When we were kids, and this was new, this music was like the sun breaking through the clouds - it wasn't just a "song" it was an experience - a new way to look at the world - Jimi Hendrix broke all the rules and gave us such a gift - so glad I was there

Nothing Jimi Hendrix ever did was fake. He was the best guitarist this planet ever had the privilege of experiencing. Huge symphony orchestras play his music today. That was his dream, to play with an orchestra. But he joined the 27 club before it happened, regretfully.
Jimi went way beyond the pentatonic or blues scale. I watched a rare video of him shredding modal music way before anyone else really did😃

@@s550danny I can't say who the best guitarist in history is. As a guitarist myself, I would never pick one. Here is what Hendrix had though that very few if anyone else had. He had a tremendous feel. That isn't easy to replicate. His feel was really unbelievable. The other thing to consider, is that Hendrix never had the time that some of these other folks have had with the instrument. A lot of what you are seeing is pure raw talent. It came very naturally to him. He also defined what "COOL" was or meant for a guitarist. He had the image. The other thing to mention was that he was a very good songwriter, and I would have really liked him to have lived well into later years and heard what he would have come up with. I still to this day marvel at his cover of the Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower.

Also, take a look at the shape of Jimi's strat; it's upside down. He's left handed, but initially couldn't afford a left handed guitar. He learned to play a right handed one upside down.
