Attempting to Understand the Story of Sonic Superstars

- The title says it all. I'm looking at the plot of this recently released 2-D Classic Sonic game to try and make sense of certain elements like the sudden appearance of its final boss. I doubt I'll succeed. #sonicthehedgehog

My headcannon for the story is that, after the opening cutscene with the big animals trapped, eggman sends fang and trip to find out how to free the black dragon while he builds Frozen base at the site of the remains of Egg Fortress. I assume it could have been one of his first attempts at a death egg that failed and landed in the Northstar Islands so repairing it was the reason he went the the Islands in the first place. By the time Sonic and co. reach golden capital, fang has figured out how to release the black dragon from the egg and Eggman realises he can use the Egg Fortress to do this, so he uses the time machine to quickly undo the damage of the space station and fire some sort of concentrated energy beam at a particular area in the water of the Northstar Islands that releases the dragon.
Interesting facts.
The developer of sonic 3 and knuckles was originally to add the true final boss of black dragon after gather super emeralds and complete knuckles playthrough.
But it went scrapped due to favor eggman final boss.
I'm not surprised the developer brought back idea in later modern games for complete campaign.
I like that idea
To be honest, I'm glad the final boss of S3&K ended up being Eggman. I'd like to fight our main antagonist of the game more than some random-ass dragon that I know nothing about
It makes sense, in Sonic 3's Japanese manual, when the Death Egg falls into Launch Base and Knuckles go check out, he gets confused and thinks "is that giant sphere of metal the giant dragon of the legends of my people?", that may be a leftover of the idea of the dragon being the final boss, later on that probably gave them the idea of creating Chaos, who is a dragon that was described on the Knuckles Clan legends just like Knuckles says on Sonic 3's manual
@@ibis03 Honestly, I like Eggman being the final boss for S3K too and I don't see any other antagonist and the final boss, but maybe that's because I'm used to what S3K already is
I'm fine for Superstars the dragon being the final boss because unlike S3K the start of the plot was about that with the Trio of Trouble animation
S3K already had things about that dragon on the Japanese manual, and I think if they kept that idea it would be fine if along the game they kept developing that dragon until the point we fight him
The problem for me in Superstars really is the fact that although the dragon is introduced since the "start", he gets no development along the game, if that was the case I would be even more fine with him being the final boss

I thought perfect Chaos was based off Biollante from Godzilla. They look practically the same.
The difference is one is grass while the other is water.
They even have similar attacks
I believe during a recent tailstube, they confirmed that trip is the last of her kind and knuckles relates to her in that way.

Don't think so - she was only alluded to at the very end of TailsTube 5, and then mentioned again in the recent takeover when Sonic stated she's been protecting the Northstar Islands. Regardless, she probably is.

Yeah the Dragon definitely could’ve used some better foreshadowing and another cutscene showing how it got unsealed. Too bad there’s no old school Manual, it could’ve solved at least some of the backstory of the game.
I hear that there was more story written up but the game didn’t include. So i wouldn’t be surprised if an “superstars plus” or the comics use put to use the behind he scenes lore.
On a positive note I do like we actually see Knuckles has moved the Master Emerald I always imagined that was his Plan in Sonic mania adventure. Nice to have some images for it.
do like trip's development & putting in fang being terrified of being owned by amy's hammer again from the comics.
while i don't find the cross media promotion bad at all with the convenience we have now do think there could've been a cutscene of robotnik waking the dragon from the ruins(also how he suddenly got the ability to use time energy like maybe have robotnik using his equivalent of the emerald powers)/with how the symbols show on the sun gazers(would be an interesting development for trip that maybe the other sungazer's were able to transform with only few emeralds like how sonic's boost is implied to be from using the emeralds so much.) kinda wish sonic's friends had fully helped him fight the dragon outside just giving rings.
do remember in sonic 3's manual sonic and tails read a ring that described angel island also had knuckles think the death egg was an egg born from a god/heard from development of sonic 3 something like it was going to be the final boss for hyper sonic(do think that fits the doomsday zone name better as robotnik's mech was basically the death egg robot dropping bricks at seeing sonic fighting with rings booking it.).
definitely do think the black onyx could've used more foreshadowing(biolizard at least had some in the story,a nice genius bonus to why a lizard was chosen and a nice callback to chaos if you equate him to the mural like shadow to the super sonic mural,it's more like the time eater where outside ian flynn's theory/mine of it being eggman's nega wisp armor affected by the hyper go on black hole it kinda came out of nowhere while it's powers of time manipulation were explained well.) as while i don't find it sonic 4 levels of bad with the story(where it was just sonic messing with eggman on a random shameless pandering island/metal sonic repeating history despite getting a still unexplained orb.).
and mania having some issues with the plot switching to saving little planet in a admittedly funny take that to ep. 2's cliffhanger superstars(alongside making the bosses like previous classic games.) could've used some more cutscenes to explain the finale with how the classic/advance games handled it in a great visual way.
I liked the way the Sonic Superstars story is told, it's in line with the other classic games such as Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and it works perfectly like that and manages to explain things such as Trip for example, she has a perfect character development even with no dialogues and only cutscenes beetween levels just like Knuckles does in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, they both managed to expand cool character without any dialogue and with the Classic games story telling of no dialogues and cutscenes beetween levels
The problem really comes with the dragon, I don't dislike the dragon just being there, because he was presented in the story since the start with the animation and it shown that Eggman's goal was to unleash the dragon, but I don't like how he just appeared out of nowhere, and I think there COULD be a way to better develop the dragon and still maintain the classic story telling
In fact, I actually did that myself, I rewritten Sonic Superstars Final Story a while ago, I'll share it here if anyone is interested, it is in the replies, of course I'll make it short because I did a really big script
The final story starts right after the end of the Normal Story Mode and Trip's Story, with all of them celebrating Eggman's and Fang's defeat and Egg Fortress' explosion on Bridge Island, when Eggman and Fang fly by on the background on a destroyed Egg Mobile and Marvelous Queen, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Trip then follow them until they get into Speed Jungle
In an altar in Speed Jungle they find Eggman, who gets angry at them, but then Fang comes behind and knocks Sonic making him drop all the Chaos Emeralds, just like he did with Knuckles at the start of Golden Capital Act 2, Fang then grab the 7 emeralds and rush into the purple stone that is at the top of the altar and then use the 7 Chaos Emeralds in the stone to unleash the dragon, Trip runs after him because she is the only one who knows the disaster that would lead into being the guardian of the Northstar Islands (and considering that the theory that the Dragon is someone from her tribe that got crazy), but she gets in there too late and the dragon is set free
Eggman then tries to command the dragon, but the dragon refuses to listen and just knock Eggman over the horizon, Fang then fearing for his life get the 7 emeralds and throws to Sonic, and Sonic transforms into Super Sonic, then the regular fight would occur, after the fight just like in the regular game Trip would seal the dragon back into the purple stone and they would celebrate again
I even made a new final cutscene where it starts just like the regular one, where they're celebrating on Bridge Island, with Sonic and Trip being lift by the giant animals, but this time Fang is also there, kinda recluded ready to take off in the Marvelous Queen
Trip then notices that, decides to go talk to him, and give him an apple, just like how Amy did with her in Lagoon City, as a way to show that she forgives him and a way to thank him for changing sides and helping them by giving the Emeralds to Sonic
Fang gets "annoyed"/"indifferent" but he accepts the gift, Trip gets happy, looks at Sonic, Sonic gives a thumbsup to her, and then just like in the original game, the drawing Eggman made of the dragon falls on the ground and the game ends
I even thought about after the credits as an extra make Fang playable in Story Mode and Time Attack, he would not have a whole unique Story Mode for him like Trip does, but you could play as him in the existing modes

While we indeed got no context for Sonic and Tails, Knuckles is ordered to help out by the Master Emerald itself, while Amy happens to see Sonic and Tails and follows them.
Sure those people exist but like with Kirby, Sonic's focus on its story and characters is one of it's selling points and what helps make it stand out from Mario. Its why the Meta Era's attempt to move away from that is so derided and Frontiers' return to it so celebrated.
5:45 I don’t think it’s up for debate, if those events actually happened, then they’d contradict the cutscenes at the start of Superstars itself since those show how Sonic, Tails, Any and Knuckles got to the Northstar Islands and Trio of Trouble takes place before they got there to begin with (notice the drawing is in the animated opening cutscene of the game so Trio of Trouble would have to happen before the game). It makes sense being a nightmare anyways, since that location is Purple Palace (which is not on the Northstar Islands) and Fang dreams about Tails messing up the Marvelous Queen, like he also did in Seasons Of Chaos before.

The Master Emerald shrine also appears in one of the opening cutscenes of story mode if you play as Knuckles.
I love that Fang has a fear of Amy across the media.

Press Factory (I haven't played Superstars, only seen walkthroughs, but I love Act 1 as Eggman aesthetic): Super Knuckles

Egg Fortress: Super Amy(this is technically her canonical playable debut besides racing games, after all)
The Egg Fortress was built to rewind time on the North Star Islands, freeing the dragon by cheating the cycle. By the end of the above campaign, the Northstar Islands have only been reverted to how they were before Sonic and co. arrive.
Not willing to give up, Eggman puts Fang and Egg Robo in charge of Attempt 2 whilst he looks for the Black Onyx.
Trip's Story ensues.
Last Story: Be it the second activation of the Egg Fortress or Eggman actually finding the Black Onyx, the Dark Dragon(who I believe to be an incarnation of The End, the purple moon cameo being an omen)
escapes and is beaten by Super Sonic.

Fun fact, in Lagoon City Act 2. A new pathway opens up exclusive for Amy. As Trip asks the Octopus to move its tentacles to open up a tunnel for Amy.

The second location is probably a reference to Mania Adventures when Knuckles tried hiding the emerald in the middle of a forest.
I feel like it’s not that difficult or hard to understand, it’s your fairly simple classic sonic affair. And superstars wasn’t a mixed bag it was a good/decent game.
One thing i don't understand, why make Eggman have the bad drawing gag?
Considering he’s an engineer he should be able to draw up detailed plans and schematics by hand

The only thing I don't like about Trip is that they basically made her into a second Knuckles. Not in terms of personality, but in terms of her archetype. Like she's an island loner, who is likely the sole surviving member of her species (to be confirmed) and that needs to guard and ancient stone that contains an giant monster that was previously trapped by her ancestors for threatening world destruction.
Like couldn't we have at least SOME variation on that trope? Not even a small one? Cuz right now, she just feels copy-pasted and that makes her feel more like a fanfic OC then an actual new character that adds something of substance to the series.
What about 'Sonic Superstars Start Book's release along with Fang's Big Break and Trio of Trouble?
Concerning the Black Dragon, my guess/thory is that it might’ve been one of Trip’s people. A Sun-gazer who messed with things they shouldn’t have( maybe Dark Gaia ) and got corrupted into a rampaging monster. The warriors of Trip’s clan gathered the Chaos Emeralds to seal the Black Dragon away but not before it devastated their civilization to the point where Trip like Knuckles is the last of their kind. At least the only one we currently know about.
I assume the forest hideout for the master emerald in that part was a nod to sonic mania adventures, makes me wonder if they really canonized it instead of sonic mania plus encore mode

i know it might seem like a boring source but the digital manual works similarly to the way the manual for 3k did where it tells you what’s going on (at least for the base story)
Hopefully, SEGA chills out with Classic Sonic.
I disagree that the story failed because they tried telling a Modern Sonic story in a Classic medium.
It can work, just use murals or something else to visualize stuff about the plot without using words.
I mean, a simple Dragon over a burning island mural. Then an Egg appearing next to it in the next mural. And the Dragon is gone in the third can go a long way.
