      @@FretlessMonster I’m sure listening plays a big part on that (maybe even more than muscle memory?). Guitar is my first instrument, but after trying to learn the violin for a few months, my approach to the guitar changed a lot. On a fretless instrument, you end up forced to really listen to what you are playing. You rock!

    So barracuda? Anyway I hope you get around to looking at these Tony. I saw you with the Firm in 85. I knew the difference between bass and guitar well I had just picked it up. Bass. Especially at that time in metal the bass was a little low in the mix like a second rhythm guitar. I was about 11 andI was so excited to see Jimmy Page. I thought he may not play with Zeppelin after. After the gig all my friends and I we're not talking about Jimmy Page but you. You totally changed what I thought bass could be at that young age. My first experience with live, loud, fast, slapping and awesome finger skills on a fretless. Thank you it's appreciated!

    I love the tone here! So good. I gig with a TF PBass all the time but I've got flats on it because they work better for the music. This really makes me wish I could put rounds back on it and recapture that snarl.

    • @LageYouTube

      I have tapewounds (mainly because they're good for the neck) and they kinda have that snarl

    • @iangrant8290
      @iangrant8290 3 роки тому

      @@LageUA-cam I've never used tapewounds. I've been thinking about giving them a try. Would you recommend any particular type? The sound I'm trying to achieve is sort of 'angry upright'. The flats on the TF bass deliver pretty well but it's hard to get a little snarl when I want it.

    • @FretlessMonster
      @FretlessMonster  3 роки тому +3

      I use the DR Sunbeams. Rounds but a little more forgiving.
      I was part of a Webinar with Berklee Bass Department - called Innovators of the Fretless Bass. Percy Jones, Mark Egan, Steve Bailey, Steve DiGiorgio and many others. The question was asked. Rounds, tapes or flats. 80% of them said rounds. And it was all about the sound, not the fingerboard. Sound is first. It’s easy enough to clean up the fingerboard. I love the versatility of the rounds. I’ll roll off the treble if I want a darker sound. I simply cannot get my sound from flats. Having said that, it’s each to their own 😁

    • @LageYouTube
      @LageYouTube 3 роки тому

      @@iangrant8290 D'addarios and Fenders are pretty much the only tapewounds I could find-in Finland at least. I personally use D'addarios, but they're also pretty expensive. I'm not sure about that snarl or what you mean by that, but you can get good Jaco Pastorius type of tone. They're kind of like roundwounds but not as bright. You can find some good comparison videos on UA-cam

      @@FretlessMonster Davie504 is a highly skilled bass player on UA-cam who is of the opinion that playing with a pick is "illegal".
      I used to really like his videos but he changed the style of them to become more approachable for the "internet meme" kind of crowd.

    You're videos are a mixture of no nonsense, cut the crap and near threatening. But cool shuddupnlisten,!
    Great to see no lines on your fretlesses, I've never found the need!
    The p bass is cool and avoids all the Jaco clones, just wish there was a much cheaper option.....so I'll assemble my own budget franklin clone shortly!

    Sorry, his playing does nothing for me, I prefer Steve Bailey's playing on a fretless bass.
