Guitar is my first instrument, but after trying to learn the violin for a few months, my approach to the guitar changed a lot. On a fretless instrument, you end up forced to really listen to what you are playing. You rock!

Especially at that time in metal the bass was a little low in the mix like a second rhythm guitar. I was about 11 andI was so excited to see Jimmy Page. I thought he may not play with Zeppelin after. After the gig all my friends and I we're not talking about Jimmy Page but you. You totally changed what I thought bass could be at that young age. My first experience with live, loud, fast, slapping and awesome finger skills on a fretless. Thank you it's appreciated!

My band played there monthly as we were local. So I got to see all of the big talent come through and Blue Murder is in my top 3 or 4 and much of it was due to your playing man.

I love the tone here! So good. I gig with a TF PBass all the time but I've got flats on it because they work better for the music. This really makes me wish I could put rounds back on it and recapture that snarl.
@@LageUA-cam I've never used tapewounds. I've been thinking about giving them a try. Would you recommend any particular type? The sound I'm trying to achieve is sort of 'angry upright'. The flats on the TF bass deliver pretty well but it's hard to get a little snarl when I want it.
I use the DR Sunbeams. Rounds but a little more forgiving. I was part of a Webinar with Berklee Bass Department - called Innovators of the Fretless Bass. Percy Jones, Mark Egan, Steve Bailey, Steve DiGiorgio and many others. The question was asked. Rounds, tapes or flats. 80% of them said rounds. And it was all about the sound, not the fingerboard. Sound is first. It’s easy enough to clean up the fingerboard. I love the versatility of the rounds. I’ll roll off the treble if I want a darker sound. I simply cannot get my sound from flats. Having said that, it’s each to their own 😁
@@iangrant8290 D'addarios and Fenders are pretty much the only tapewounds I could find-in Finland at least. I personally use D'addarios, but they're also pretty expensive. I'm not sure about that snarl or what you mean by that, but you can get good Jaco Pastorius type of tone. They're kind of like roundwounds but not as bright. You can find some good comparison videos on UA-cam

I used a JayDee custom fretless for 5+ years in the 80’s. Later Firm and all Blue Murder. Truly I was looking for a Fender with an ebony board. The Fretless P Bass was always my sound, but I could never find one with ebony. I finally asked them to make me one. All I play now is the Fender. Don’t own any other basses.
Ive only just discovered your channel and Im so glad I did! Im a long time bass player (not particularly great though) and never played a Fretless. But absolutely adore the sound you're getting from yours. What made you go fretless as your main instrument btw? Superb player!

I believe you put the fretless bass on the map with something you might be interested in watch the 1975 Earls Court Led Zeppelin live performance of in my time of dying and watch John Paul Jones on that bass behind Jimmy page doing that slide guitar frenzy.It’s the only time I’ve ever seen him play a Fretless.
@@FretlessMonster a friend gave me that album “Little Queen” on vinyl in 2008 and it sounds incredible. The production is fantastic. It was influenced by Zeppelin, as there’s a few more Zep III acoustic style rockers on it. I’m a guitarist by nature but I have a few basses too for recording, I made my own fretless 30 years ago as I loved Sting, Pino Palladino, John Gibblin, and all those wonderful players. I’d love a factory made fretless P bass though. Thanks for sharing this tuition as it’s a difficult instrument to master flawlessly. I’ll check out more of your discography. Now that I think of it I remember seeing an interview where Heart admitted they took it from Achilles last stand and by the way I saw you in concert in 1986 I was six rows away from you at the Meadowlands arena and I believe for about 10 seconds you started playing purple Haze Before your bass solo.

The set up varies from bass to bass. They all play and respond slightly differently so I adjust each one to it’s optimal setting. I don’t use any particular measurements - all by ear and visuals.

The p bass is cool and avoids all the Jaco clones, just wish there was a much cheaper option.....so I'll assemble my own budget franklin clone shortly!

Ha. Good question. Yes that’s doable. Up to a point. As long as it doesn’t slip a whole tone or so, and as long as you can hear everything perfectly.
