- EDIT: As of 01/05/18. This is now available as an official and stable release over on GOG (Good old games) GO buy it and enjoy :)
The nostalgia is strong with this one!!
Finally, somebody amazing has created a 64 bit installer for this old gem of a game. This video shows me playing as Neva Kee on the Abyss invitational track, probably the hardest track to master in the game and a lot of fun. The game runs well enough, but does have a few quirks which seem to be different for everybody. This is the first time I have played since the days of the N64 and I loved playing through it again. It may not be as pretty as most modern games, but you really don't notice at these kind of speeds. Most of what you see is in your peripheral vision and just adds to the sense of speed so it isn't as bad as you may expect. I'd say this game has stood the test of time very well and I highly recommend anybody that missed it all those years ago to try it out.... What I wouldn't give for an HD remake.
There are a few niggles to mention. Mostly in my case it was graphical glitches which you can see a few of in this video. Some questionable hit detection which leads to a few unexplained deaths and some control issues such as me having to brake every time I want to disengage the boost for instance. And the game takes about 7 minutes to start up initially. It is however worth the wait.
The biggest issue I have had however is a lack of control in the zero G tunnels. Only the roll axis functions which means I die constantly due to the rocks etc that litter these tunnels. Unfortunately, I then spawn inside these rocks and the game has to be re-set. This led to a huge amount of frustration on race 6 and it took me hours to finally progress. I did it eventually by racing so quickly to get a huge lead, and then slowing to a crawl near the rocks.
I love this game and I'm very happy to have it working again on my system despite it's quirks, If you would like to play it again on a modern system, head over to this link, download the installer and have fun...

Happy racing!
.
Imagine this, remaster/HD release to PC. 12 player online.
Imagine the INSANE intense races! Disney please.. PLEASE
We can only hope!
Game is not even on Steam/GoG, it's either time to start modding/remaking it or abandon hope.
Hmmmm I like that idea. I've been trying to decide on an indie game project and that sounds sick. VR capable as well?
was wondering why this is the only star wars game not available. Seems insanely hard to patch it
+Kevin parker Well it's on GOG now and running well in 1080p :) Enjoy.
NEVA KEEEEEE. Neva Kee was my main
Mine too! Loved that Pod, shame he dies in the movie ;)
Neva Kee is pretty much the best character together with the Bullseye guy and Cy Yunga, the rest are pretty bad, except for a couple of exceptions
bowser515: Ratts Tyrelle is the only one who died in the movie.
@@bowser515 canonically neva kee just drives into the horizon on lap 3 of the boonta classic, never to be seen again, this is not shown in the movie tho, but this technically counts as death
omg, that track was so hard for me back then, i was just 9 and always felt on the bride part, drove me crazy
My boy Neva Kee!!! Didn’t know this was such an hard track, I’m so proud of me now! Ahahah What a game, what an ambience. 100% Star Wars immersion. The colors, sounds, MUSIC of course and the design of every single map was brilliant and sooo starwarsish. And the “main menu” cantina? Perfect!
So many good memories, so hate on this course tho...
Yeah, it was a gem of a game, worthy of an HD update at least. I loved this track myself, although I remember it being much more frustrating trying to stay on the ledges with the old N64 controller...
Yep, this is the hardest track. My fastest lap on this track is 58s, it wasn't easy to do
Neva Kee is such an amazing machine. It lacks resistence to dmgs but all other stats are amazing, best mention to handling and acceleration.
Magician2086 he's the best pod imo. I tend to go for either him, or Teemto Pangalise...
Yeah I also played Neva Kee a lot, as well as Mars Guo and Clegg Holdfast.
Magician2086 I just got the GOG version which runs well and looks better as it's 1080p. I had fun trying all of the different pods again. I played the main campaign with Ebe Endecott through, I always liked the look of his sharp blue engine surrounds.
Well I never played on PC, only got the N64 version(which was nice too). I alos mostly played the characters I mentionned above because of the look of their pod.^^
I beat EVERY track after getting Neva Kee in first place. No upgrades whatsoever. Including the Invitationals. My favorite of the Invinitational tracks is easily The first one. It's jolly good fun to speedrun, but my favorite track in the game goes BY DEFAULT to Executioner. LOVE myself those 0G tubes.
Is it just me or do the blurry, but patterned textures really add to the sense of speed?
It's entirely possible. One thing this game did exceptionally well was to make you feel like you were going very fast. I think it's one of the reasons that it has aged fairly well and is still very playable. It looks fairly poor (visually) in videos like this, but when you're actually concentrating and playing it, you just don't notice the aged, blurry textures. I do wish they would give this a nice HD update and re-release it though...
@@bowser515 low quality blurry menu font is more noticeable than the actual game graphics.
This is my second-favorite N64 game, right behind WWF No Mercy. My friends and I spent hours playing both. We worked our way up to this course but never were able to beat it. Also, Neva Kee FTW!
Wonderful video Bowser!
Many thanks.
So good news people! As of today, this is now officially available as a stable release over on GOG (Good old games) Happy days....
Really? I've had no issues and I've been playing it quite a bit. I'd contact GOG and see what they say. Or try a fresh install just in case something messed up.
Bought it. Classic! Only 8 euro's.
0:54 I've never been so bamboozled
I’ll never forget winning this race using anakin skywalker in the abyss he was quite easy because he was slow and able to go through curves slowly I wish I could’ve recorded to get that footage but I didn’t get that footage so that’s going to last me long
Man this track blows, i remember not being able to continue due to this track, it took me months to become a pod race master until i finally did it while using "Bullseye" Navior's ship.
I hated this track on the N64 back in the day. But playing it on a PC with an xbox one controller allowed me to appreciate its challenges without getting overly frustrated lol. I quite like the track now.
This was always one of my favorite pods to use
Thank you for this video. STAR WARS Episode I Racer is the best racing game I have ever played.
As a child this was the only track where I could not get the first place in the end on N64. However, when I once again tried it in 20010 I finally managed it. ^^
You're welcome. And congratulations! It is a tough track for sure.
I doubt anyone can beat this guy :D this level was the end for me :) never won this
+Jerrysis Ha, thanks. I'm really not that good. I loved this level personally, although I completely get why many people didn't, it has lots going on. Staying on those platforms could be very frustrating, but with a steady hand, and an xbox one controller, it's easier. Get it running and have another go, this game is still great to play today despite the aged visuals.
I actually installed it about 2 years ago and played it as Anakin till this level. I had copy of the working game on my HDD, but sadly, it fued itself up and I cant even recognise the HDD now :/ it took me so long to make it working tho, do you actually have some comfirmed setup that can help me get the game again? By the way, I still dont know for sure, but it feels like when yoou crash and destroy the pod, you lose some of bought upgrades?
+Jerrysis It's a while since I played it, just use the link in the description, it got it working for m on Windows 10, you just need a genuine disk copy of the game. If I remember correctly, it installs two versions. One of which didn't work for me, but the other did although not perfectly. It has glitches, the only major one being the lack of control in zero G tunnels. The rest were minor and not completely game breaking.
Dude this is it! From this side I downloaded that fixer, I remember that friggin console. It took me incedible amount of time to make it working tho, I will not undergo the process again, dont have nerves for it :/ but still, I do remember that I had no issues with the zero gravity parts, only minor problem that textures were not correct if the camera passed through some objects, but that happened only on like 2 maps with a lot of vertical movement and just for miliseconds, so not a big deal. Wow I wish gog made this game compatible and bug-free ... that would be awesome ....
Yeah, I hope they fix it soon!
Thank you so much!
You're very welcome!
This is a best game of my old N64! With Goldeneye obviously!
+Exocet Definitely! I actually bought another N64 the other week, best console I ever owned. SW Racer does look and play much better on PC however, it hasn't aged so well on the N64, I have some great memories of it though... And Goldeneye is one of the best games ever made. Jet Force Gemini was great also, I miss RARE...
@@bowser515 So was Perfect Dark... I played it a lot on one of my friends' N64.
I love this game cause that was my favorite Star Wars games.
Mine also, among others such as Tie Fighter, here's to hoping we get a modern day version.
Looking forward to playing this on the Switch
I'm glad more people will get to experience it. I've just started another play through myself on the GOG version.
Finally, not a NOOB!
+Craig Cuthbert Thank you, I practiced way more than I care to admit for this video however haha, I was gutted when I fell off the ledge at 1:54 ;) Still a really great game to this day, I wish they would give it an HD re-release.
This is the only track I could never finish first for the life of me :(
The best pc game of all times ever...
15 years later, I played the track at least 60 times in my phone , finally won the race xd
It's been so long since I played this! Probably 15 years!
The trick to this was staying on the upper level, and it was damn difficult. I guess Neva Kee's podracer is the only real solution here, less moving parts, less drag. I did manage it few times, but Still, bloody hell difficult.
Neva Kee
Fuck yeah, Neeva Key.
100 % PRO
What me or you? I'm certainly not lol, when recording this, I'd only been playing for a day or two, hadn't touched the game for years before hand. It's much easier with the x box controller on a pc than with the lovable, but flawed N64 controller. Man I'd love to see this game updated.
It's on gog now!
XDeath yeah, happy days. The GOG version runs great also.
Its a new lap record!! , haha beter than i could
Seen your comments about gog releasing this again and decided to Google whether they had got anywhere with it as I've also been wondering, and as of 5 hours ago it's up on GoG.
I know, just installed it and had a quick go myself!!! Great news. Thank you for the heads up regardless, it's working fine now thanks to GOG.
bowser515 I've not tried it yet, but I'm glad it's working as some people had reported it still didn't like modern PCs.
I only had a quick play last night as it was gone midnight. But it seemed to run just fine for me. Setting up the controller is proving to be a little unintuative, but I'll be putting on soon and trying to sort that out. I'll be sure to let you know if I do run into any issues....
I’m stuck on this one it’s so hard lmao
incase you dont know yet... this game has been on steam since last year
store.steampowered.com/app/808910/STAR_WARS_Episode_I_Racer/
derp
Game is now on steam on sale 40% off
Now that I know the only reason this track shut me out is because you can't drop to the lower level at the start as well as cutting left for that shortcut basically being required to win, I feel much better about myself
Yeah, if you drop down on that first part, you're not winning the race. I love this level, but it is tricky. I tried playing on an N64 recently and it was almost impossible. It's much easier on an xbox controller (on PC) With a smoother stick. But like everything, practice makes perfect.
For the version I'm running the in race audio doesn't work, but the cutscene sound works haha
I have the same problem. And also boost does not work :-(
I had the same problem, just run as administrator and you're all set ;)
I'd like to see this on the Switch's VC in the near future. This game and F-Zero X were the greatest non Mario Kart racing games on the N64
this is the track i have never been able to beat. i'm playing on my laptop and the steering with the keys is awful. if you press the key, it immediately steers as hard as possible. therefore staying on the top lane is pretty much impossible :(
Yeah, you're definitely not finishing first in this race using that setup. I'd recommend a decent controller for this game in general, it makes a world of difference. I use and xbox one controller which works pretty well. Still difficult to stay on the top lanes of this track however. Careful use of airbrakes helps.
I rage quit the game because I couldn’t beat Bozzie Barranta
In this level I always fell off the first level
Yeah, it's a challenging track but practice makes perfect. A good tip is to break heavily and take that section slowly. You can make up the time elsewhere by going like a whippet with a bum full of dynamite.
I loved this game to the bone, but I hated this particular level
I wish this was on Steam. Anybody agree.
Maybe not steam, as it probably wouldn't run. But I certainly wish that GOG would fix it up and sell it.
It's kind of sad when it's easier and more accurate to emulate a version of the game for a completely different system than it is to run a version meant for an earlier version of Windows.
+lurkerrekrul I agree, it definitely wasn't a simple task to get this running. And even then it wasn't perfect. Sadly the other versions were noticeably down-rated in the visual department. I do wish Good Old Games would get a stable version of this on sale already.
I've never played the Windows version. I've only played it on N64 and Dreamcast (emulated), and Racer Revenge on PS2, also emulated.
It's weird the way GOG has most of the Star Wars games, but doesn't have Racer, Battle for Naboo or The Phantom Menace.
I'm still annoyed that Rogue Leader and Rebel Strike only ever came out for the Gamecube. My system isn't fast enough to emulate those games at a playable speed. :)
No i cant download for 64 bits!
Do you play on low settings or is that pop-in just a side effect of playing it on modern hardware?
Hi, no I'm playing on high settings here, it's just a very old title so doesn't look amazing. This is the original however, the GOG re-release has a higher resolution etc and looks better. I really should revisit this and do a play through with the updated version at some point. The good news is that the game is so fast that you really don't notice the pop in or the aged graphics as much as you would otherwise. It still holds up as a game IMO and is very playable still.
@@bowser515 I tested this on my Pentium 3 500 on TNT2 and V2 sli today. Looks like they obfuscated the pop-in with fancy dx7 fog effects that doesn't seem to be supported on modern hardware anymore. I noticed this on more old games, basically software mode with texture filtering and the CPU doing most of the work, all because modern 3D accelerators haven't the faintest idea. lol
@@jamooiniet8456 Most likely. Have, you looked into the Gog (good old games) version? It is improved over this original release. Although obviously it's a still very much aged and in need of an HD remake.
@@bowser515 Tbh. i'd just go with the PS2 version over the gog version, it has nice graphical and gameplay improvements over the original and it's pretty easy to emulate on modern systems.
Well done!
Also is it just me, or are the speed of the opponents based off of yours? I mean that's pretty horrible, probably my biggest problem with the game. For example I saw 2 oppontnts behind myself on the minimap, I boosted and they still followed me at the exact same distance. Because of this if I ever get behind the leader so much he doesn't show up on the minimap anymore, it's game over because no matter how good you are, the game just matches his speed off of yours. The only exception seems to be if an opponent is in front of you, less than ~500 meters
+Peter Feher Yeah, it does do that. You can shoot off miles into the lead if you play well. But in all other situations, the opponents alter their speed fairly drastically based on what you're doing. I think the intention is to keep the race interesting by always having opponents around you. You can also select the AI speed in the race load screen. I always put them to fast for a little extra challenge.
Thanks for the reply. Yes thats probably what the intent was, but I just hate it so much when a game takes me for a fool with gimmicks like this.
Peter Feher It's called 'rubber banding'.
How do you record the game in 720p hd 60fps and 1080p hd 60fps?
I used Nvidia Shadowplay to record this. I played around with both Fraps and DXtory, but never could get on with them. Shadowplay seems to record without killing the frame rate which is nice...
bowser515 Okay cool. Thanks
CPU play. Not human.
I'll take that as a compliment....
GameCube emulator and Fzero gx is a good time if you like this mess
can you publish a video of how instal the game pls
That would probably be a boring video, but it was really easy. Just head to the website in the description and follow the instructions. You will need a genuine disk copy of the game for it to work.
i don't have de star wars race disc so i don't understand how can i play :/
nik dobronski
You will have to buy it for this installer to work. Have a look on ebay, you can find it very cheap. Or wait and hope that "good old games" release a working version at some point.
I'm pissed I have to rebuy this game just to play it in windows 10
You don't. You can use the method in my description of this video. The video was recorder with my original copy running on W10. However, for the sake of a few quid, I recommend just getting the GOG version as it's more stable and is running in HD which is noticeably nicer looking. They have sales occasionally, just wait for one of those.
oh, you actually beat this crap track, wow, WOW
Maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment, but I quite like this Devil track ;)
@@bowser515 yes, you are :D
If Disney does not make a new podracing game that is to the same quality of the original it'll be the biggest mistake they've ever made. But with EA in charge of the games maybe its a good thing one doesn't exist. Star Wars battlefront was really a disappointment compared to the original Battlefronts. I wouldn't want to see Episode 1 Racer tarnished by EA.
@Continuum7 I agree completely about EA, halfof the field of racers would probably be locked behind a season pass... I think Disney is staying away from the prequels for now which is a shame really. Hopefully we will get an HD version of this at least if not an all new sequel. Racer revenge released on the PS2, but it was very different, and not nearly as good.
Yeah I have Racer Revenge on PS2 and got it for my PS4 as well but its not as good. I think the fact when you upgrade one pod it upgrades them all. Takes the fun out of the game and replay value. The first game was just solid and I hope they'd make a new podracing game like that one. It would be even cooler if it included all original pods and with technology today we could build our own podracers too and have online and local multiplayer. Would be so awesome ... but to dream of things that may never come is depressing lol
The speederbike mission is excellent in STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT. A podracer game with this production values would be for shure a day one purchase for me.
It’s on switch 2021 I kinda wish we had rereleased in 2012 for the tpm in 3D would’ve been released on popular video consoles like the wii it was popular back in the day and Xbox and update pc version
Hi!! Does this have controller support??
Yeah, I was using an xbox one controller for this video. If anything, I'd say that you need a controller to play it properly.
@@bowser515 I'm trying to use my steering wheel with pedals and I always get issues trying to set the inputs.
@@ZA-7 I couldn't comment on that as I don't have a wheel. It is a pretty old game at this point and it has a few issues. Try asking on the GOG forums.
@@bowser515 I solve it with the original game, thx for your reply!
You really could install and play this on a Windows 10 PC? Without any problems?
You can certainly install and play it. It does have a few issues, but not enough to spoil the fun over all. The zero G tunnels are the biggest issue for me as I had no control in them meaning I died multiple times while hitting the rocks inside.
I never did follow up on this. How exactly did you get this installed AND working on your PC? Pardon me, I would really like to know. Miss playing this game SO much.
The fonts and hud are fucked up for me because i have the german version... ;_;
Fortunately, this game is so fast that you don't get a chance to look at them anyway ;)
bowser515
They've glitched all over the screen...
Atno Mornlodan
Ahh I see. Did you use the method in the description of this video? It installs two versions, might be worth trying the other one? Also, always run the game as an administrator.
bowser515 As far as I remember, the other one didn't work at all.
Ok, I may have just found a solution.
i think these games are a rip of from wipeout..
Not really, they are both futuristic racers, that's basically where the comparison ends. I like the wipeout series, but racer just did everything better imo. Better handling, better locations, more character and charm in general. My opinions of course.
@@bowser515 Thanks for the info..
Its real?
Very real.
