I think a big issue is that some people aren't even aware of the problems that the world faces. If they don't know, they won't act to change it. I think we all should try to start conversations with our peers about this type of stuff and help gain awareness

I like the part of the video when you say that there's still hope for us because of the fact that it's our communication what has brought us together, rather than something "Mandatory" or an obligation. I think you're contributing a lot to create a better civilization by making these type of videos, which I find very helpful and interesting by the way. Nice job!

Bad thing we, humans, acquire knowledge much faster than wisdom. This might be the main cause of our self-extinction. However if we manage to extend out from our Sol. System, we're probably fine. But i think it's too optimistic to think so :/
I've recently read a book "The Singularity is near" by Ray Kurzweil. Basically it's about how if we manage to create conscious robots, in 100 years, our hybrid-civilization will extend throughout the galaxy! Who knows? (If they don't see us as a threat)
Anyways glad to see you back, Dale!

The hardest part about all of this is the unbelievably massive amounts of different directions we as a society could go. One successful Technology could completely reshape the direction we would've gone if something else was made instead. In the context of artificial intelligence, it's going to be difficult. Robots are not scary, robots that think on their own it Is a little worrisome, robots who are program to have the ends justify the means and potentially coupled with a superiority complex are extremely terrifying...
I don't know where we will go, but a tremendous amount of precautions need to be established. Backup plans, for backup plans, for backup plans.
Glad to be back, hope you are well!

I was so happy to hear how much you talked about education. I genuinely do not understand how there are people in the world how do not want to learn. Learning new things is fun and practical and an education is one of, in my opinion, the most important things in life because it is the only thing that cannot be taken away from someone. And, with the internet and thousands of UA-cam channels similar to Dale's like Vsauce and Veritasium and TedEx and AsapScience, just to name a few, learning is fun and knowledge is so accessible! In this era, there is literally no excuse not to be educated. People tend to underestimate the generation of people born with computers and iPhones and the internet being readily available but I can honestly say that if it were not for the internet, and mostly UA-cam, I would be far less educated than I am. I'm sorry I feel so passionately about this topic it irks me so much when people are apathetic to learning.

I read that another problem that could hinder globalization is that interdependence makes nations vulnerable. For example, because our economies are so dependent on one another, one country (or an entire coalition of countries) has the power to weaken another country by imposing sanctions on them. And this could make countries want to be less dependent on one another.
It's hard to see how we can overcome power struggles and people who will take advantage of others' dependency. Nine billion different people of all categories (sex, nationality, religion, etc.) will have to learn to trust one another. Like you said, it will be difficult. But with communication and education, I also believe that sometime in the future we will be able to progress to a Type 1 civilization.
I really like your videos Dale. They are really interesting and make you think. And I can tell you're really passionate about your topics, which is super and important and awesome!

I think your analysis of English as the Type I language hinges on the fact that it stays static and a unitary language, which is highly unlikely. People have been saying for decades that TV, radio, and now the internet will stop language evolution in its tracks. However analysis of dialects show that's not the case. English dialects are still diverging. And within a few centuries, it will likely be broken up into a series of daughter languages.
There may be a contrived standard dialect that is used as international and general Type I communication, but it's not likely to be identical to modern English and it probably won't be an everyday language.

Perfect video, so much said in twelve minutes. I agree education is especially important and I also see an opportunity for unite philosophy to rise. I think that in this world of money and lack of time, we forget to stop and think critically about things that are actually important. For example that our generation and generation after us are deciding the future of human kind and we will truly either make it, or break it. Great to see more and more people understanding and sharing.

I think these are some of the most important things we must do. Moving away from consumerism and toward sustainability. Economies that that are less profit driven and more driven to address the health and well-being of everyone in them. And political systems that, instead of all effort going into perpetuating themselves or their ideologies or their next few years in power, are seeking to be forward-looking and do the right thing for the future of all of us.
But, the most important thing of all is change at the individual level.

I think that one of our biggest issues that we face is wealth inequality. The divide between the "haves" and the "have nots" is growing every day the more of the money is being concentrated into fewer and fewer hands. I've watched CGP Grey's video "Humans need not apply" and I agree that we need to make sure that everyone's basic needs are met (ie food, water, shelter, medical care, etc) and are not dependent upon their ability to find and keep a job(not that I am against work, it's just that with more and more processes becoming automated, there will be fewer and fewer jobs to go around for an increasing population of our planet). I believe we can blame wealth inequality, and the quest for money for most of the problems that we need to find solutions for today. We could easily feed the entire planet if money were not involved but there are people who die from not having enough of the right foods to eat because of money, and it's really everybody's fault and nobody's fault. We are slaves to the system as it stands right now, but if we could stand united we could easily beat the system and establish a new one that is fair for everyone, everywhere.

Easy fix. We don't need this many people. Our population should stop growing!!!!
It should be cut in half at least!
And it SHOULD depend on if you want to work! If you're not willing to work for your goals, you do not deserve to live, breathe, drink or eat! Hard work always pays off!!

Hey bro, great video. In my opinion, the most important issue to adress is shifting power. We are heading to a society of market, not societies with market. There is no valid argument to justify the ever growing free interchange of goods, but at the same time more and more restrictions are put to people to move from place to place. Its cynical how a qatari is able to go to London and be welcomed by everyone and a Syrian has to wait months or even years in a refugee camp to escape terror. This is pure supremacy of capital over human interests. The problem with this is that the leading countries, those who are actually pushing forward civilization, depend heavily in a capitalist economy to continue innovating. But if we dont change the main focus, the inequality and economic barriers for humans that this brings, will end up causing enough social unrest to destry us.

Unsound money makes that, for example, we are wasteful (would you throw away your stuff if it was paid with gold? Would you throw bombs that were paid with gold?) Now gold is a bit outdated, therefore i urge everyone to start looking into bitcoin (and variants of it).

I think we will fail. Even thow we have made great strides I think a Fallout style timeline will eventually happen. It only takes one event to trigger a nuclear war and we have come close many times.

I think the fact that we haven't destroyed ourselves speak tremendously for itself. If anything weapons of mass distraction has prevented a lot of war, but at the same time it is not acceptable for countries like North Korea to have them. And China should know better... The problem is the fight to be the best has made us inconsiderate towards each other. And that needs to stop.

I think the problem with "multi-culturalism" is that people mistake culture with morality. Some cultures do have moral aspects that don't work with multi-culturalism and it is important to carve them out. It's important that the people pushing for multi-culturalism point it out and *publicly* disapprove of those.
Look at my country Sweden for example. There're huge shism forming with great backlash coming just because the people pushing for multi-culturalism behaved stupidly: not tolerating criticism of certain aspects of other religions etc. They even went so far as giving an islamist a minister post.
^^ They would consider my post racist ^^

The most important element we as humans need to get over? Our instincts. They are much more active on/in us then anyone person can introspectively realize at any given moment. We currently have governments and economy that reinforce them daily. To remove those would require a massive everyone or nothing approach as humans short that of it would be massive strife.

The single most important thing is good basic education that includes science even if it's science that is politically inconvenient - you can choose ideas, but you can never choose facts. Also free higher education for any who wish to continue learning, not necessarily for jobs, but because it raises the consciousness of populations, it satisfies curiosity, and when you learn what you want to learn, without pressure, it's life enhancing and fun.

Education because it even in first world country's ( I live in Wales a country in the uk ) you don't get taught stuff that you should know For example programming in my mind should be a skill that should be taught as importantly as a second language and the art of code is so important for children now 30 years ago know one would predict how main stream the Internet is even though how big it was at the time and I think that in 20-30 years I think code will be taught over a second language in schools all over the world and also there should be one universal language taught from elementary up even if say France teaches French in there schools but the should priority English just as much.
Ps the main thing wrong with modern day society is that the rich get better education and other vital services than the poor

Personally I believe humanity will never unite as one. We are simply far too diversed as a species, driven by basic instincts and needs which in turn leads to greed, hunger for power and self destruction seeing where the world is heading right now.
Luckily there are few of those who can see further but I believe there simply is not enough time and effort.

I think you're getting a bit ahead of things. type 0 civilization has existed for several thousand years. There have been ups and downs, but we progress. We don't need to fix this tomorrow. It will suck for a lot of people, but it has for several thousand years. If we rush things we'll just get more push back. We need to communicate and understand our similarities and differences. We aren't a singular society. We are many varied societies. What works for America may not work for everyone, and we mustn't force our ideals on them. We have the means now to talk and listen globally, and slowly we will work toward a common society, but it will take more than the 100 years estimated.

Education, I always said it was education. Imagine if the whole population was educated. There will be no third world countries, there will be no wars, conflicts, racism, sexism, acts against religions, terrorism. The whole world would be put into one mind set, with different opinions, and principles.

    • @ElchiKing
      @ElchiKing 8 років тому +5

+Wecu Snow I don't think education alone is enough. In fact only pushing education but not careing about "concrete" problems like hunger, environment, poverty, dictatorships etc. can be quite dangerous as people tend to learn mostly things they consider "interesting", so if they get educated about freedom of speech, equality... but don't get a perspective for their life (or the life of their children) they might start rebellions which might (in the worst case) end in endless wars...
I agree with you: Education _is_ an important point, but we need to overcome "concrete" problems simultaneously.
Also education (as it is now) doesn't stop you from being selfish. You may know about world poverty, you may know about thinking, you may know about technology, but as long as you don't have _empathy_ with other people, you will still be the selfish asshole you were before being "educated".
What we need is not only education in our brains but also education in our "hearts" (Sounding pathetic...). But I guess, this will never happen.
And a third point (not anymore related to the previous): Why do we need to evolve to a Type 1 civilization which can use more energy? Why can't we just try to adapt to our environment perfectly and try to be able to work with the resources we have, getting a Type i (mathematician in myself ;) ) society, which breaks the circle of growth and getting bigger, and living happily many years in the paradise we will almost have destroyed in 2016?
(Also "English" as "world language" is a little Anglocentric. The English spoken on the Internet is not everyday English but a language with many dialects and different influences; it is not English as in Britain or America, let's call it Inglish instead)
Footnote: If we get to a Type 1 civilization, it would be good to still have different languages and cultures in order to prevent exchange and innovation from happening because there are no differences anymore. (Also people living in the desert have other problems than people living on the north pole).
Perhaps "extreme" federalism is a very European (especially German) way of solving problems, but it seems to be the only way to connect people with one another by simultaneously keeping their connection tight enough (and it keeps individuality)
In fact, as +Think Fact mentioned, we have some structures like the European Union consisting of 28 countries of which some are divided into states (in Germany that's 16 "Länder") of which some are divided into regions (e.g. Bavarias "Regierungsbezirke") etc.
If we structured the world in a federal way, we could probably get closer to each other, solving problems on
      the lowest possible layer.
This might make it difficult to get changes from top to bottom or vice versa, but it could prevent big conflicts (and an evil world-dictatorship) from happening.

+Wecu Snow Not just learning, but learning how to learn, how to unlearn, and like the video implies at the end, learning how to learn what you didn't know that you didn't know.
In many ways, there wouldn't be as many different opinions about everything, there would be no real religion at all, and there would be little conflict except who gets to do what first.

Radioactive Snake I know. Even the Nazis had education, it was just highly regulated by a socialist state. A variety in education creates competition on a local, national, and international level. So with that being said, education isn't the magical cure to all of the world's problems. These socialists don't seem to understand that.

I think the most important thing humanity needs to tackle in order to unite is perspective. If all people were the same, we'd already be united, but that isn't the case. The second best thing is for everyone to be educated in a global perspective. What I mean in global perspective is a perspective where we view humanity as a whole and let go of our exclusive cultural, religious, or ideological divisions. This allows us to sympathise with any human being. To do this, people need to be exposed to multiple perspectives. I grew up in a very conservative country but moved to a liberal western country. This allowed me to adopt both cultures but also made me critical of both at the same time. But as a result, I grew to appreciate different perspectives and understand people no matter their background. I understand that differences exist and always try to view a problem from many different perspectives other than mine. A willingness to adopt and abondon perspectives and understand each other globally is what humanity needs.

Vsauce and ThinkFact(of what I have seen so far from ThinkFact, which are 3 videos the latest one, Micheal Stevens facts and this one) are my kind of channels. If these channels keeps it up, they might be responsible for a more critically thinking younger population. What really irks me is that I won't be around to see humanity finally transcend into the Type: 1 civilization. As important this generation is I just want to know that we made it, all I care about is that we MUST make it.
    The Biggest Problem?
Terrorism. Terrorism is really the biggest problem humanity is facing. We could easily reduce a considerable amount of time we would need take to reach the "Type 1" if terrorism wasn't an issue. Education is about the only thing that would make people aware of the bigger picture and not to mention people who are educated but still don't care *need* to read, watch and breath this kind of information. I hope we reach type 1 very soon(atleast in my life time). Lets work towards the bigger picture, It isn't gonna be easy but it will be worthwhile. *SUBBED*

A significant barrier is the common person's inability to argue. Arguing is not about being angry or being the most intimidating; when done well, arguing is more akin to brainstorming. Maybe it gets intense, but it's a heat a that refines the quality of ideas like a crucible instead of a heat that burns everyone involved. People not knowing how to argue is what has pulled people apart and what will continue to interfere with people willingly working together. There will always be opposing world views, and when they collide civil conversation can't be expected to prevail; humans are far too passionate to express their worldview without emotion. This is why we all need to learn how to productively argue.

    • @Deriak27Forever
      @Deriak27Forever 8 років тому
