    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    OVERVIEW
    Theoretical physicist Michio Kaku sees two major trends today. One eventually leads to a multicultural, scientific, tolerant society that will expand beyond Earth in the name of human progress. The other trend leads to fundamentalism, monoculturalism, and -- eventually -- civilizational ruin. Whichever of these two trends wins out will determine the fate of mankind. No pressure, everyone.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    MICHIO KAKU
    Dr. Michio Kaku is the co-founder of string field theory, and is one of the most widely recognized scientists in the world today. He has written 4 New York Times Best Sellers, is the science correspondent for CBS This Morning and has hosted numerous science specials for BBC-TV, the Discovery/Science Channel. His radio show broadcasts to 100 radio stations every week. Dr. Kaku holds the Henry Semat Chair and Professorship in theoretical physics at the City College of New York (CUNY), where he has taught for over 25 years. He has also been a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study as well as New York University (NYU).
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Question: What is the likelihood that mankind will destroy itself?
    Michio Kaku: I say looking at the next 100 years that there are two trends in the world today. The first trend is toward what we call a type one civilization, a planetary civilization, a civilization that resembles something out of "Buck Rogers" or "Flash Gordon." A type two civilization is stellar. They consume so much energy they can play with stars. That is for example the Federation of Planets in "Star Trek." "Star Trek" would represent the typical type two civilization. Then we have type three, which is galactic like the Borg or "Independence Day" or the empire of "The Empire Strikes Back." That is a type three civilization, which is truly galactic. Now by the time you reach type two, you are immortal. Nothing known to science can destroy a type two civilization. Comets, meteors, earthquakes, even a supernova a type two civilization would be able to survive even a supernova.
    The danger is the transition between type zero and type one and that’s where we are today. We are a type zero civilization. We get our energy from dead plants, oil and coal. But if you get a calculator you can calculate when we will attain type one status. The answer is: in about 100 years we will become planetary. We’ll be able to harness all the energy output of the planet earth. We’ll play with the weather, earthquakes, volcanoes. Anything planetary we will play with. The danger period is now, because we still have the savagery. We still have all the passions. We have all the sectarian, fundamentalist ideas circulating around, but we also have nuclear weapons. We have chemical, biological weapons capable of wiping out life on earth.
    So I see two trends in the world today. The first trend is toward a multicultural, scientific, tolerant society and everywhere I go I see aspects of that birth. For example, what is the Internet? Many people have written about the Internet. Billions and billions of words written about the Internet, but to me as a physicist the Internet is the beginning of a type one telephone system, a planetary telephone system. So we’re privileged to be alive to witness the birth of type one technology, a planetary telephone system. What is English? English is the beginning of a type one language. Everywhere I go around the Earth, people speak English because that is the lingua franca of science, technology, business. They all speak English. It is the number one second language on the planet Earth. And what is the European Union? The European Union is the beginning of a type one economy. And how come these European countries, which have slaughtered each other ever since the ice melted 10,000 years ago, how come they have banded together, put aside their differences to create the European Union? Well to compete with us and who are we? We are NAFTA, so we’re beginning to see the beginning of a type one economy as well.
    Then we’re beginning to see the beginning of a type one culture. Everywhere I go you turn on the radio and what do you hear? Rock 'n' roll, you hear rap music. You hear youth music. Youth music is now planetary, knows no boundaries around the planet earth. Everywhere I go I see high fashion: Chanel, Gucci bags. We’re witnessing the birth of a planetary fashion.

    What's funny is that Michio Kaku is perfectly describing the angst between social interaction and political interaction. Terrorism is a political tactic. Angst between governments prevent individual from socializing and interacting normally between countries. Borders, internet censorship, import taxes, Nationalism, Wars, Weapons of Mass Destruction, etc are all political tools that prevent human social cohesion between countries and even in countries. Even a large percentage of social murders are done with political motivations. ALL of the violence and strife that humanity regularly subjects itself to on mass is political and dealing with governments. Michio Kaku is questioning will we become a political-less, government-less type 1 civilization or will our governments and politics destroy us.

    Spoken like a true imperialist, comes back to the term Foucault coined "The black mail of the enlightenment", Kaku is the prodigy of that black mail. The funny part is that while he's labeling religious fanatics or cultural fanatics as "terrorists" because they are mono culturists all the stuff that he mentions as signs of a converge into one hegemonic ideal (so called liberal democracy) is just a modified form of mono culturalism even if he embellishes it with the word multi-culturalism, he doesn't realize that he's using the same principles that the fanatics use (mainly the Abrahamic religions) especially the concept of teleology and the inevitability of progress towards type whatever "civilization" or towards the kingdom of heaven or some other abstract idea. I pretty much doubt that he knows that he's speaking ideas straight out of Kant, since scientists regard philosophy as horseshit yet they speak its language without knowing that, but little does he and other know that this view is historical and idiosyncratic to a certain time and culture and in retrospect as Adorno and Horkheimer claimed has caused great episodes of catastrophe and domination through the use of instrumental reason (science divorced of comprehensive reason)....in short the implicit message he's conveying is that anyone who opposes our hegemonic neoliberal globalized project and whats to be on their own and autonomous we will count them as terrorists and destroy them ^__^

      Agree to disagree, how is that done? by calling the people who don't want to be part of this whole quasi mythological project and would rather be left alone"terrorists"? Is there any universal law or any imperative that says we have to develop shared beliefs (not that i'm against it) or is that merely a function of a mode of thought, going back to the enlightenment, that is hegemonic and imperialistic in its foundation and core conceptions? how do you aim for a multi-cultural world by saying people have to converge on shared beliefs and shared world views and if necessary forcefully? i'm sorry but that's statement is full of contradictions and is simply incoherent!

    • @Liv3lov3laug3
      @Liv3lov3laug3 10 років тому +42

      truesemite You totally miss the point. Type 1 society is a MULTI-cultural society TOLERANT of differences, meaning its laws and police permit you to practice and believe what you want as long as you don't start blowing people up or torturing them. NOT allowing people the free will to practice their differences by FORCE/punishing these differences which have no evidence of being harmful IS terrorism, by definition!

      Imo, if there are civilizations that are watching us right now, they are probably millions of years ahead of us. This is almost unimaginable, but most likely true. If this is true, we are to them as insects are to us. The question is are we pests who can't save themselves or are we not pests who can't save themselves and should they intervene?

    I always love watching this video, I've seen it 3-4 times now. I was talking to a friend about ISIS and what they are to the rest of the world. Michio explains them so well, he hit the nail on the head with pinpoint accuracy. ISIS is afraid to see a multicultural islamic world because they will lose any foothold of power to the power of the people, not the power of the few. Once ISIS has been dealt with, and the few other tribes who seek to plague us with grotesque 'executions (murders)' we will WELL be on our way to type 1. Google has launched it's fiber network to give free internet to millions throughout multiple cities, these kinds of things are bringing us to a much more free world where we will have less poverty and starvation! Preach Michio!

In fact, every single realistic depiction of the future you see in movies or books for instance describes post-apocalyptic environments or shitty ass societies having to deal with overpopulation and the huge social gaps between the rich and the poor that it induces, because clearly it is the path we're on right now.

Which is probably for the best when you think about it. Peace allows stagnation , war nessitates advancement. Tolerance is actually apparent in the recent years.
    You see people around you, mostly on the Internet, making jokes about African or Asian or whatever else stereotypes.
    Those jokes are made _ironically._ Those people don't care about them and we don't care about those made towards us because those jokes do lean towards some sort of truth.
    We understand each other--non-seriously as it may be--and this understanding paves the way to toleration.
    When you _get_ something, it's easier to judge it.

      There is a lack of hope in occidental society in which everyone unconsciously wishes for "the end". This is a consequence of a sort of collective low self-esteem. There is a theory in occidental anthropology: people simply are not happy being a civilization that hinders the earth and all other people on it more than it contributes. Look at these societies internally. Signs of a secret desire arises for self destruction in all media and in a majority of people, the ones who believe "the end is near" in the western world when awareness of what they do to the rest of humanity is raised (thank the internet), In societal psychology, they know that the world would be better without them. Not to worry, it'll be 5 billion years before the sun burns out. And the only thing that is remotely likely to wipe out mankind is some sort of unprecedented sickness or something else natural i.e. a meteor. So be happy we will grow old :D

      Right, cause bombing one small island would have caused that much damage. Russia's population is only spread to about 54% of its entire landmass, and even then about 3 nuclear bombs would have made them surrender if placed correctly. It's like when the US dropped the bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. If the US would have just dropped it on Tokyo it would have been done after the first bomb. I am not trying to sound cruel, I am just being serious about the matter. One nuclear explosion placed in the right city in any country would ruin it. It is all a matter of placement.

      Dave Johnston what stupid ignorant you are! Unless you are 14 years old. The USSR had as much nuclear power as the US. The reason why the US never drop a nuclear bomb in the USSR is because the retaliation would have meant total devastation for both countries without a winner. That is what it was called "cold war". It was the impossibility of fighting a "real war" due to mutual extermination as the most likely outcome. So, just to lecture you a bit on the Cuban Missile Crisis, it wasn't a matter of bombing a small island. It was a matter that no matter who would drop the first bomb, it would have ended up in mutual extermination for the US and the USSR. That's why nobody shot the first bullet.

    All world leaders need to watch this video every morning to have an idea of the correct direction to take us lol... maybe consider uniting. We need to haul ourselves in the right direction before we shatter all the things humans have achieved. Michio's words after 5:27 was kind of mind blowing.. makes us sound like a repeatedly failed experiment! :d We've got to try to overcome this transition..

      Its 2022. Do you still believe humanity is even capable of uniting without destroying themselves?

      @Kettz Рік тому +1

      @@JuwanBuchanan I did back then, lol. Nowadays not so sure... Life is short and unfortunately these thoughts are beyond the scope of my tiny life rn. Too hyper-fixated on making the house payments, medical bills, insurance, etc etc. Life is like that.
      I was optimistic back then but it feels like the last decade has been a huge step backwards so at this point I don't think we'll see any tangible improvements in this generation or the next.

I think the most likely scenario to explain human existence is found in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 where an advanced civilization left a group of pilgrims to colonize a planet with life forms similar to its own.

    For a civilization getting beyond monetary economy, overcome living with trade, is maybe 'THE' "civilization exam"! And to solve this exam, a civilization has to change to the alternative system to monetary economy, which is called 'Resource Based Economy' (RBE)! Please learn more about RBE. Thanks.

Brexit is symptomatic of all that is dystopian and wrong about life on this planet, and there doesn't seem to any overriding sense of its negative and divisive ramifications. Scientists are awesome, but they are so illiterate in politics!!!!! The only way for us to get ready to go from type 0 to type 1 civilization, is to make the leap from warmongers to peaceful resolution of conflict through dialogue. Imperialism will never allow us to grow as a civilization achieving the necessary peace and skills for conflict resolution and will never allow our planetary economy to develop to the needed stage as to being capable to transition to a type 1 civilization. And the reason because you never hear one of these awesome scientist talk about this stuff, is because they will loose their jobs if they dare to. Censorship is another very clear trait of imperialism, and unfortunately there is a lot of self imposed censorship in the USA, particularly in the scientific community.

The shift from selfishness, theocratic beliefs to a global society, whereby cultural values change and humanity enables everyone to grow and develop.
