Love Kai's playing, he's got the proper bass face too! The switch on the EB-0 is probably toggling series/parallel wiring on the pickup, the Dimarzio website mentions you can do that on this model.
More Kai please! And: Thies Deep Bass Sounds are full in Fashion in a lot of (Indie)Pop and Elektro Music or jung modern Jazz/Elektrofusion Bands like BADBADNOTGOOD.
Amazing basses! I have them both! An 1969 eb3 and an 1964 epiphone rivoli. Wouldn't change them for anything! They rock and they have a character that i like!! They play great with overdrives or nice tube amps! They growl!!!
I enjoyed Kai’s playing on this video! Please invite him back soon. Also, loved your Gibson basses! I own a 1967 Red EB2D with the 1 pickup in the neck position. Mine is missing the pick guard and the mute was removed sometime in the past but was included when I bought the bass from a co-worker. It came with a great hard shell case too. Very sturdy. Keep up the great work, Gregor!
A walnut EB2 is a beautiful thing. I prefer 34 inch scale, though. Yes I enjoy your videos, but Gregor, I must tell you this. You bring joy. Thank you.
Yes I'd like to hear Kai's playing some more. A number of times I was tempted to get a Short scale Gibson but didn't. It would be just an indulgence not a need. Still, maybe one day ... Same goes for a Thunderbird 🙄
Thank you Gregor, So many people turn their nose up at Gibson basses. I love them and they each have their place. Beautiful EB2 by the way. I have three Gibsons. I have a 68 Melodymaker, which was basically an EB0 that I had customized with an EB3 neck pickup with dual volume and tones. It is a beast. I sat in for a couple of songs at a club with it and the bass player came running up to turn down his amp, I don't think I heave ever played with volume over 6 it is so powerful. I also have a 73 Ripper. This was an original run of the first 26. I put a Babicz bridge on it and it is amazing. Finally I bit for a 2019 Midtown. Another amazing bass in it's own right. Thanks for the videos.
Between 67 and 69 I had two EB-0’s an Epiphone EB-0 Wilshire type and an EB-2DC double pickup with the single double coil push button switch. The older Gibson EB-0’s had a Little wider neck at the nut and played a bit easier down there than the 67 and later basses. Seeing your video really took me back to when I started playing bass in my senior year of high school. Thanks man for the memories!
I think these fat bass sounds are far from being out of fashion. Sure, modern metal requires crazy overdriven hifi sounds ala Dingwall and Darkglass, but the neo soul thing is also very popular right now. McBaise just released an album where these basses would not be out of place at all.
For me there is nothing heavier than big ol HBers for metal and heavy rock. Doom requires massive low end and dist. EB basses are great for that. Esp in a three pc scenario. But not so much w twin guitars.
Anything from '69 has to be special, but that EB0 sounds like it has an octave pedal hardwired into it, so deep! And Kai, oh man, great bass player and he has a Joy Division T-shirt. Awesome!
Kai is great, give him a gig! I'm shocked by how "synthy" that EB-2 walnut bass sounds. There may be some potential in there for use in more modern styles yet!
Really great episode! Solid palying from Kai! Maybe you can put out this short licks somewhere) Every time i hear this type of pickups thinking to put on my precision.
My first bass was a 66 EB-0 that I got at 13, in 1976. A couple of years later I wanted a P bass. Could not afford one so I put a D'marzio P 10:49 PU in the bridge position, and a 3-way switch. So I had bridge PU, both PU,s and just bridge PU. The bridge P PU gave it a little treble added so together it sounded not so muddy.Did not think about original Vintage, back then you did what you had to do to get the tone u wanted. Alot of basses later I still have the EB-0 and when I'm just playing myself I use the EB-O, Sounds great for Classic Rock, Beatles,Stones, Cream and other classic Rock. Like you said it's only for certain songs, I love a mudbucker.
I've a lawsuit Ibanez EB-3 from the early 70s that sounds a lot like the EB-2 with the switch on. Really lovely bass I think it shines on jazz - solo on the bridge pickup rythm on the neck
If it still has the original maxon pickups, they can be used to date the bass...I have a '74 eb-3 slot-head clone, and tone-wise it's a nice middle ground between my '70 melody maker and '13 sg bass
You need a Grabber. If you like that sound and quirky Gibsons overall, the Grabber is for you. They play beautifully too. I have one and it's my main bass, it's just so different from everything but has massive sound. I call mine "The RumblePlank" lol. Go find one, I'm sure you'll love it
Now you need a Ripper and or Grabber to round out your Gibson basses. Where do I find that shirt (besides on you) I would love to get one. Thank you for sharing. Cheers
Great. I have a 69 EB0 with original pickup, bridge cover. Get some not TOO bassy sounds/wolf notes out of it by doing a few things (It’s that nice deep vintage hollow squashed tone): Unhook the treble kill capacitor inside Volume on the bass down to about 7 Bass eq on the amp way down Using GHS brite flats What strings are you using on these two basses?
I own both a '59 EB-2 in sunburst and an EB-3 from the 70es in walnut. Great basses but truly not very usable. I love them both, though. Especially the EB-2 is amazing. I love that semi-hollow sound.
Well I can tell you we used these on several recordings and I must say I looove this sound more than many other basses. These create that fat tone you are after in a rock song which does not sound thin and crappy.
Both of those basses sound like they'd be a bit of a bear to fit into a mix, but for the right project - say, music for a street montage in a 70s detective movie - I can see them being excellent. Also, more Kai!
Short scales fit so good in the mix. I dont get the biased against them. They indeed sound more bassy than 34" which sound more punchy. Just put a flats on short scales and you will have a focused bass sound perfect for Neo Soul, Electronic, Pop, etc.
So sorry I have not given my 2¢ yet about the fine bassist in this video. He is just all that. Thick pocket, slinky soul and vibes man, vibes. Yes, more that man.
I've had both, they were the best basses I ever had. The EB2 does not remotely sound like the one I had. I eventually ended up with a Fender Jazz which is a fine bass but not nearly as well made as the gibsons. I also have a Yamaha Bb800 which is the best fender precision ever made! I would trade them all for a decent EB2. And yes, mine was a walnut one. I f only I did not have to sell it when I ran out of money.
I recently acquired a 66 EB0 with the same pickup in it. I was wondering what bridge is on yours? Or if you would even reccomend it. The one I have on currently is some no name bridge that isn't very good.
@Gregor: As far as i know, you got a few Gibson Basses. Would be fun to see someone play them in comparions with the Epiphone Copys! Love the Bass but like you said, i guess its quite unique.
I play live with a EB3 (varitone switch, slothead) in a Stones tribute band. As a back up I have a Burny with the Daddario PU but the sound is really different, thinner. Always tell the sound guy that should I swap bass, there will be a drop in the low register. Nothing beats the original mudbucker IMO.
No place in today’s music? Don’t tell that to Billy Sheehan… I like the way the tone of his voice changed when he hit the switch! Now that’s a switch!😁
Those Gibson EB0 and later SG basses are my favourite-looking and least-favourite sounding instruments. Even when they added the bridge pickup to modern SGs, even if you drop a dimarzio model one in the neck, even if you add a babicz bridge, there's just no escaping that hollow, shallow, unsustained muffle of a tone. Pity, because I *love* the look and feel!
Did they only make 12 EB-2dw’s in total or just in 1969? I have a EB-2dw which i believe to have been made in 67, and I’m trying to get more information on it.
Hi Gregor, thank you for the video! The Gibson basses are so cool!!!! Your guy Kai is a good player and I don't want to disrespect him but I think your playing is much better. You could have saved a few Euro and ran through these basses for us if you wanted to. You sound great and I want to encourage you to demo some basses as well as having guest players. Take care of yourself and thanks again for all the great videos!!!
Me too. Gregors got an array of basses I’d love to steal. That Sandberg J is probably the best J ever, it completely lacks all the typical weak spots JBs typically have and plays like a mother, awesome. His Pbasses are a collection of beauties too.
I love the 1967 EBO because a bass player went out and bought one in 67 and I bought his 63 Jazz Bass. Thank you!
YES HAVE KAI MORE!!!!!! that was some wonderful groove playing
Love Kai's playing, he's got the proper bass face too!
The switch on the EB-0 is probably toggling series/parallel wiring on the pickup, the Dimarzio website mentions you can do that on this model.
Jah wobble would love the sound of the Gibson EB-2.
Kai’s playing is fantastic. Love that walnut finish!
Man if I had one of those old Eb-0s I could never change out the mudbucker! I'm too in love with the old Jack Bruce sound!
That sidewinder has 3X the output of the DMZ. But I WOULD put the DMZ in an Epi EBO.
Your guest bassist rocked. He has some funk in him.👌🏾
More Kai please! And: Thies Deep Bass Sounds are full in Fashion in a lot of (Indie)Pop and Elektro Music or jung modern Jazz/Elektrofusion Bands like BADBADNOTGOOD.
Love both basses. And Kai.
Kai put that funk on a roll. Great bassist and basses.
Kai has great note choice. Definitely rehire him!
Amazing basses! I have them both! An 1969 eb3 and an 1964 epiphone rivoli. Wouldn't change them for anything! They rock and they have a character that i like!! They play great with overdrives or nice tube amps! They growl!!!
69 EB3 NICE!!!

That first bass riff was funky!! 🙏🏿
great playing and beautiful instruments!
The tone in Kai's last performance is amazing. The resonance!
A walnut EB2 is a beautiful thing. I prefer 34 inch scale, though. Yes I enjoy your videos, but Gregor, I must tell you this. You bring joy. Thank you.
Great basses, the EB2 is the standout for me. Also loved Kai's choices of music to showcase them and his playing is great.
Yes I'd like to hear Kai's playing some more.
A number of times I was tempted to get a Short scale Gibson but didn't.
It would be just an indulgence not a need.

Nice groovacious playing, Kool basses as well👌
Yes, hire him again, knows how to get the tone out of a bass. Love those basses btw !
Thumbs up for Kai!
More Kai!

Thanks man. You’re right, I’m a 69 build myself🤌🏽
Yeah it kinda sounds almost synthbass like. I’m sure with an OC 5 to emphasize that it would come out even more.
@@klemke7043 yep, the EB0 with an OC5 would be monstruous, the Godzilla of bass.
Keep Kai!
I love my Gibson SG bass. I wish Gibson would release reissues of the original EB0 and EB3
Kai is great, give him a gig!
I'm shocked by how "synthy" that EB-2 walnut bass sounds. There may be some potential in there for use in more modern styles yet!
It must put out pretty pure sine waves, so it could maybe drive synth equipment?
Geiles Video! Danke schön.

you're welcome ;)
I work at a music store and we got a 70's Gibson Ripper. Vintage Gibson's are the best
Kai’s a good bassist! That first jam was mean
Bass face approved Kai
6 minutes 8 seconds in.....'Muddy flobbyness' - perfect !!
Ky sounds great!

Imagine if the Grabber design allowed the sliding pickup to move even further towards the neck :)
Kai is the guy. 'Nuff said 👊

Gregor, great video. Thank you. Come to California !

Am I right on? With the thick slinky vibes?
I'm right. It's the TSV all day.
At 2:15, my iPhone speaker actually said ‘nah, mate’
Bass in the face!
Hire him again. He plays effortlessly.
I loved my 68 EB-3, but it was a neck heavy nightmare. I'm going to put the sidewinder pup in a Tele body, and either a humbucker or piezo, or both.
amazing EB2, thank for recording it.
At 2:13 was it with tone control fully open?
not sure but probably not
I've had both, they were the best basses I ever had. The EB2 does not remotely sound like the one I had. "Just mids and bass" - heck yeah, sign me up!
I'd love to hear what these sound like through a Fuzz War. I could be pretty amazing.
Ausgeseichnet!
also I think that sound is very useful... for things very similar to tone the Banda Brothers get ... (Poncho Sanchez's rythm section)
I am Dieter. And this is Schprockets!!

Gregor! I'd love to see you do a review on the Shift Line Olympic MkIIIS.
Great bass playing. Tons of useful information but as is so often the case- no mention of neck dive. 🤷♂️

Try the Les Paul DC. Pickup is in the middle so the sound is very versatile yet stills vintage looking and sounding.

The EB3 has much more versability than the EB0 or EB2 due to the bridge pup.
So is the new SG bass. Even more so.
Please, let us hear the EB2 with some Fuzz 🙏🙏🤯
Maybe it was because of the two basses showed in the video, but I would say this: he didn't slap. So, hire him full time. Please.
slapping certainly is the one thing those basses cant do, but who needs slapping anyway ;))) just kidding
