I just dug around my studio looking for a phone, because I kept hearing one vibrate. It took me like 30 minutes to realize that it was from this video :P:P:P
Tapewounds are pretty cool but they have 2 downsides: 1. They’re pretty flappy, and I mean really flappy. If you’re gonna play hard, you should take that into consideration, because they get hard to hold onto. 2. The entire string is coated in plastic and that’s gonna hum like crazy in certain situations, especially in the studio. I put la Bella tapes on my P. They sound pretty cool and unique, but I got tired of them pretty soon. Am currently planning on switching to fender flats.
Very cool blog.... love the interesting back-stories and your commentary on the different applications for different basses. I am usually all about "playing", and not equipment, but this was fun. From what I heard...You sound great on fretless !!!...
Janek, first and foremost, you have inspired me greatly to start playing bass again. I switched from bass to piano years ago but I recently picked up the bass thanks to you. I really like the bass with the high C which you have displayed. Do you think a high C can be effective in any 5 string bass?
LOVED this one Janek. I am huge fan of short scale basses (I own one of the new PJ Mustangs and a SS Jag). They give a nice warm, round sound and sit nicely in most mixes. I also love tapewound strings. I think most of my basses are strung with them. Thanks for sharing this!
Awesome, I have waited for this a long time! For being someone who don't think his instruments are "priced" to him self, you sure talk about them with passion and affection. ;)
Derek L'Hirondelle careful, I have a musicmaster and even with several expensive trips to the shop and it doesn’t sound anywhere near as good as his. It also suffers from frequent buzzing/grounding issues. Mine at least has been a money pit lol
hi janek. my name is rodolfo im from venezuela. im drummer bass an tennis player as you. i have to say thanks a lot beause your rigth hand technique help improve my tone and stability of sound very much, i also practice using a higher action and rocks. i really have to say thanks because in my country is not very easy to find money for a good instrument and stores dont have much to buy neither, a good technique helpme very much to sound great even with my cheap peavy milestone. congrats on your blog, and your great bass colection... im waiting you here for a good tennis match.
Thank you for this!! Killer! I agree though, you should play some more fretless and some more of your first Fodera once in a while, beautiful works of art.
Deixando os baixos baterem um no outro sem pena. It's so sad to see a expensive bass severely damaged. I'm planning to make a video of my damaged ones inspired by you Janek.
You can build short scale P-bass or J-bass from Warmoth parts. USA-made, great quality, any electronics you want. If you do the build yourself, you can easily keep it under a grand.
You sound pretty good on fretless Janek I encourage you to keep at it and don't be worrying about intonation too much. The way I look at my fretless is that I use it as a bass to break all the rules of harmony and intonation and just get creative and to make the mistakes sound like music. and for that, guys like Percy Jones and mick Karn have been very influential..in fact you should get a bass with no fret lines or markers at all and just go by your ear...get creative with the limitations.
Do you use standard flatwound sometimes or only nylons ? Did you play on Musicmans in the past ? I use StingRay with Thomastik flats and sounds amazing.
question: when did you decide investing the money in a custom bass was worth it, and what were the motivating factors for you? i realize professional/financial circumstances and personal taste vary between players, but I'm personally having a bit of a crisis over whether to pull the trigger on a new custom instrument (i know, nice problem to have), with a big incentive being a more comfortable scale length. enjoying the vlogs a great deal, keep up the good work
cool story about jim o'rourke, great video as well. on a slightly similar topic, for those who haven't seen it (i actually just finished it myself), there's a movie called love lisa and the soundtrack mostly consists of jim's material. some of it i believe is exclusive to the film itself, on top of that the soundtrack is impossible to find so if you're a fan check it out.
hey man great vlog thank you ! you should REALLY give youre fretless a chance , it feels so emotional ! i'm just wondering : why the BASS is youre main instrument ?
Those are some beautiful instruments, cut my collection down to an Ibanez 2605E and a 5 string Dran Michael Warrior, but I've got "the itch" again and really want to add a Zon TJ6 into the fold.... (last one, I promise)
...Hey Guess what...I have the same Fender Musicmaster bass/serial#6_ _ 425 ....1974/75...Fender grabbed what was available in inventory that would fit in their production design of these basses. ie the pick-up not actually for bass but what they had in surplus from Stratocaster guitar (middle pick-up was my info). My bass is clean, sounds great use it every morning to do my sight reading.
In regards to your 1st Fodera (specifically the strings) I’ve tried half wounds and I really can’t dig em... I either need the brightness of rounds or the warmness of flats. That in between strikes my ear as odd for my particular basses.
I LOVE my Mexican P bass too. I've heard about quality issues, but mine is lovely. I found it on eBay and paid £150 for it! 🙂👍 PS. I must try the tapewound flats.
Sick collection! Just wondering if you have your foderas insured, or if you have some kind of replacement/financial plan in case something were to happen. Cheers!
Hey Janek, love the vids. was wondering what the exact height of your action used to be amd what it is know and how you gradually moved to the higher action. as soon as you picked up your signature fodera, I noticed how incredible it sounds in comparison to the other basses.
I remember you came to play to Venezuela with your first 5-string Fodera. It sounded completely amazing. Do you remember your band line-up at that time?
Great vlogs, Janek! I've been watching for quite a while now. What a great collection you've got there! I saw in one of your previous videos that you own a Korg Monotron and I've been wondering what exactly do you use it for. Have you tried it with the bass? I have one and would like some ideas on what to do with it. Keep up the good work!
Janek About the musicmaster Doesn't it lack low end? I borrowed one from a friend to try out in a power trio rehearsal and it barely cut through the drums and the guitar How did it do in a bigger group situation? I can't understand how people use these basses so much. What is your take on it?
Ouch, man, DAT TONE you got in "Rise And Fall" (from Bob Reynolds' "Somewhere In Between"), specially kicking in at 3:42... that's the PERFECT bass tone for me! I know, I know, there are right tones for right situations, but man, what tone is that... gosh... Got a Precision-like luthier bass here which was made in a really vintage vibe (I asked the luthier to make it with reused wood and no knobs at all, just pickup+jack and that's it), I'll try to get close to that tone, wish me luck! :-)
Maybe you get to it later, but just so i don't forget to ask, Janek, which brand of Nylon tapewounds do you use? I used to use a brand that was yellow that I think Entwhistle endorsed, but I can't remember the brand as I hardly see them anywhere. I think it was a british company, but I can't remember. from what I remember they last forever. Do you ever change them?
And Im heavily looking at moving to a medium scale. its not so much a finger reach thing, but sometimes on a 34 inch scale bass i have to do some odd positioning with the bass or my shoulders. any comments or suggestions?
Thank you for sharing that you turned down a gig because you felt like your fretless skill set wasn't up to par. Brave, humble, honest, integral, you demonstrate all these qualities in a simple story.
Mate, this is youtube not pornhub. Thats illegal.
**bling**
what is it with bass players and beanie hats.
Cool hat for a cool instrument

I just dug around my studio looking for a phone, because I kept hearing one vibrate. It took me like 30 minutes to realize that it was from this video :P:P:P
Was asking my gf, "Is that your phone beeping?"
"Whaaat?"

We loved the last Bass Best, your Fodera Signature. Thank you for your generous time.
Especially liked the "no effects" reverb you snuck on it
Very cool blog.... love the interesting back-stories and your commentary on the different applications for different basses. I am usually all about "playing", and not equipment, but this was fun. From what I heard...You sound great on fretless !!!...

please play more on fretless, you will enjoy it ;) if it's just for your self
LOVED this one Janek. I am huge fan of short scale basses (I own one of the new PJ Mustangs and a SS Jag). They give a nice warm, round sound and sit nicely in most mixes. I also love tapewound strings. I think most of my basses are strung with them. Thanks for sharing this!
Damn Janek, the soundtrack to this Vlog is so good! You should make a mixtape on SoundCloud of all you sound tracks. They are great.
Think I'm going to have to try nylon tape wound flats, they sound awesome.
that Jim O'Rourke story is fantastic! love it!!! :)
Great collection! Thank you for demonstration.
so much basses and so much passion, allways a pleasure !!
Awesome, I have waited for this a long time! For being someone who don't think his instruments are "priced" to him self, you sure talk about them with passion and affection. ;)
Amazing interesting vlog episode! Thanks 🙏🏼 for showing your collection!! 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
The Goya and the music master are my favorites.
X H4r7 I agree.
2:25 , hoping that bass doesn't die
The fretless sounds awesome ...totally beautiful.
Dude, I am just seeing this.
DAAAAMN what a sexy bass collection. I wouldn't leave my house if I had all those lol.
What do you think about Musicman basses? Do you like them?
Man thank you so much for this! Keep doing the vlogs, they´re amazing! :) cheers
I have never been more jealous in my entire life.
Which bass you had in Berklee and when you started to think about higher fifth string? AWESOME!!!
Can you make a video lesson
on the thing you started playing at 20:24 ?
Wow!!! Gorgeous all of them!!!
Great stuff! loving the vlog!
Dang, that Musicmaster sounds heavenly. I've always been on the lookout for a vintage Mustang but I could definitely live with a Musicmaster.
Derek L'Hirondelle careful, I have a musicmaster and even with several expensive trips to the shop and it doesn’t sound anywhere near as good as his. It also suffers from frequent buzzing/grounding issues.
Mine at least has been a money pit lol
love the stories. same reason it's difficult parting with a jackson charvel 2b '86. cheers.
You're like the Casey Neistat of bass vlogs
i love the sound of that Fodera P-bass!

Oh hell yeah digging this

When you mentioned my buddy Juan… 😢 what a legend

Damn when you played that Fodera P bass, I legit went WOW holy shit this thing sounds so good. What an instrument! and completely unexpected!
The Fodera at 20:10 is awesome ! What a sound 😳
Very cool video. I love stuff like this. :)

7:22 wow! Fender musicmaster bass, similar to that used by Gabe Nelson of Cake
Fretless basses are nice. I had a five string Warwick & lost it in a house fire. Including a peavey Foundation bass & a Fender jazz bass.
Dude you have all the toys! 😁👍
Janek, thank you for the great vlogs. I've been taking some inspiration from each of them. What was the first bass you owned? Do you still have it?
Do you use standard flatwound sometimes or only nylons ? Did you play on Musicmans in the past ? I use StingRay with Thomastik flats and sounds amazing.

this was filmed. on my birthday.
i see who had all the presents 😢
i have a squier affinity jazz bass though 👍
Hi, Janek! Fun to see you show off all your basses. What is it about the tape wound, as oppose to regular flatwounds, that you like so much?

as soon as you picked up your signature fodera, I noticed how incredible it sounds in comparison to the other basses.
How high is the string height on your E and G on your main bass and how low did you have it before you increased it?
Great collection. As a fellow bass player, I could be jealous....
I remember you came to play to Venezuela with your first 5-string Fodera. It sounded completely amazing. Do you remember your band line-up at that time?

First bass I ever bought: used Fender Musicmaster in 1976 from my keyboardist’s cousin for $60.
Janek
About the musicmaster
Doesn't it lack low end? I borrowed one from a friend to try out in a power trio rehearsal and it barely cut through the drums and the guitar
How did it do in a bigger group situation? I can't understand how people use these basses so much. What is your take on it?
Yo where's that video with the musicmaster
nice , I have a 1978"s Fender Jazz Bass
21m50s, who else felt their heart stop?
Hi Janek! Would you recommend this Mexican P-Bass for a beginner? Thank you and cheers from Montreal! :)
No collection is complete without a 4001…nice collection!
nice looking toys
10:36 That's a nice sounding Fender. I would never have considered one until I heard that. P-ish but with a bit more bite. Strings help, no doubt. ...
Good staff
You should get yourself a Moon JB5 mitsuru sutoh -edition, truly a hidden treasure!
can i ask why you use nylon strings instead of flatwounds? i dont do enough experimenting to know.
That buckeye burl Fodera... Goddamn sexy bass! A pity that I would have to rob a bank to be able to afford one.
leo fender pure genus !
Nice bass guitar . I wish that i have bass like that
those lucky kids!
Ouch, man, DAT TONE you got in "Rise And Fall" (from Bob Reynolds' "Somewhere In Between"), specially kicking in at 3:42... that's the PERFECT bass tone for me! I know, I know, there are right tones for right situations, but man, what tone is that... gosh...

Hi Janek, you have 2 basses from Poland - probably you have a Polish roots? Regards from Wawa☺️
Maybe you get to it later, but just so i don't forget to ask,
Janek, which brand of Nylon tapewounds do you use?
I used to use a brand that was yellow that I think Entwhistle endorsed, but I can't remember the brand as I hardly see them anywhere. I think it was a british company, but I can't remember.
from what I remember they last forever.
Do you ever change them?
Majic Freeman possibly rotosound on the brand
Amazing collection! Love your Foderas!
And Im heavily looking at moving to a medium scale. its not so much a finger reach thing, but sometimes on a 34 inch scale bass i have to do some odd positioning with the bass or my shoulders. any comments or suggestions?
Hi Janek, you have 2 basses from Poland - probably you have a Polish roots? Regards from Wawa
what are the differences between the 2 5 string foderas? scale? picukps? thanks!
Dude is awesome!
You still have your bass made by Ivan McThew called the Gridge Groaper
Thank you for sharing that you turned down a gig because you felt like your fretless skill set wasn't up to par. Brave, humble, honest, integral, you demonstrate all these qualities in a simple story.
Yo this is amazing nice coll ction
What kind of tape-wounds do you use?
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great vlog! What's the name of the track at the end?
What kind of nylon strings on musicmaster?
Love a mex p bass!
Anyone knows the song that Janek is playing at 19:15? I've been trying to find it but I can't remember the title. 😭
What clip on tuner are you using ?
Does anyone know what tuner he is using ?
awesome can I get your 'first' fodera? love it.
does anyone know the name of the intro track?
