- In this video I explain a few of the settings on the Baofeng UV-5R ham radio when using the UV-5R as a scanner. I explain the frequency range of the UV-5R, I talk about receiving analog and digital signals on this ham radio, I explain the squelch setting while scanning, as well as the SC-REV settings. I also clarify some of the FCC rules about using a Baofeng UV-5R ham radio.

@BobDoesReviews not true I use it as a scanner for police and ems use. So I know better as long as I don't key up I'm ok. Oh wait I have keyed up several times when picking the radio up and I'm still here. Zero jail time. How About That.

I ordered my Coveted UV-5R radio from Amazon with Prime 2 day shipping and before I opened it up, the FCC was knocking at my door. I swear, the government is getting out of hand. They said they were charging me with a future violation that I was going to hit the transmit button without a valid ham license.
To be honest, you probably would have hypothetically deserved it anyway.

Its been about a month now that I entered into the amateur radio hobby. After watching your videos for hours, also those from Ham Radio Crash Course and Ham Radio 2.0, I purchased a UV5R. Unfortunately it had a defective speaker and where I bought it only had UV82 as a replacement. It seems to be a great radio, but there aren't many videos available for it. I loaded all the frequencies from the UV5R into it using CHIRP - after a factory reset - and it works great. Your videos did help me with many things and I look forward to watching more from you. And any "Sad HAMS" can go kick stones, their own if possible 😃. Stay safe and vigilant.

Love the antenna grabs!!! And the shirt is one of your best so far! I wish I could get away with wearing that 👍👍😁👍 The first reason why I bought my UV-5R last October was to use as a scanner and to listen to what's going on around town like the fire department.
Even if I wasn't a fellow radio dork like Randy I'd still watch just for the humor. That you can actually learn something is just icing on the cake as they say.

Completely agree. His humor is my kind of humor. From the t-shirts and pictures to the more subtle broken pencil "pointer". Absolutely hilarious. The abrubt stop when he transmits in this one would have made me spit my coffee if I drank coffee.
I get anxious every time I see that pencil with no lead and the bits of broken pencil at the end cause I think when he points it at the radio that a bit of pencil will break off and get stuck in the radio .
Dude can you please get that thing sharpened ? I understand if you got no lead in your old pencil but please clean it up a bit

I've had my UV-5R since 2014 or 2015 and use it as an ad-hok scanner in addition to my Uniden HomePatrol scanners. Thankfully, my county dispatch in Central PA is still analog along with some neighboring counties. I find that it receives much better than any scanner when using the standard rubber antenna. I love mine.

Just want to say, you started me on baofeng radios and most of the huge watt radios but you have helped me on the train tracks and got me back on rails after derailing bc I was confused. We all love you and boofwang becomes a boomwanger😂

I got my first UV5R 3 weeks ago. I now have 7 of them and 2 GMRS ones now. Just got a TB5R 8 watt yesterday. I have a cop car that still has the antenna for uhf/vhf. Tomorrow I get my adapters to connect my tb5r in my car. I have a usb charger for the bigger battery as well as a speaker so I can hear it batter.

This video helped me out a lot, mounting an external antenna to my truck for my UV-5R. I have decided to move the antenna from the back of the truck, to the cowl, infront of the A-pillar. Can I coil up the extra cable, or would I be better served to purchase a shorter cable? Thanks!

Damn you!!!!!! 20 minutes has gone by since I started this video to me being able to continue it. I saw the shirt and the contents of my mouth flipped a u-turn and found it's way onto my keyboard.
Randy, although you can be a bit harsh at times (which appeals to my sense of humor, by the way), your videos are interesting and I enjoy them. I am an old ham (think collecting social security), and when I had money coming in, I bought four Yaesu ft-60 handhelds, speaker mikes, improved antennas, and battery packs if no AC is available. You can clone one from another, and they can survive a LOT of punishment. I still probably would not have gone with Baofeng if they had been available. But I did buy one to mess around with. I'm not really terribly impressed, but they certainly were cheap! But so were the Yaesus at the time.

I love your background music. It really adds to the mood of your videos. I went to Stern Beats to try to find the track(s), and I found Wolf Pack, but what other tracks do you use? I tried listening to your vids on my iPad while searching Stern Beats’ music on my iPhone, but I could only match up the one song. Admittedly, it isn’t easy listening to three audio tracks (your voice and two soundtracks) at the same time.
