Thank you so much!! Definitely give acrylics a try! As a teenager I used primarily watercolours and then went into acrylics and it took a bit of getting used to. But for some parts of my paintings I still treat acrylics like watercolours - like sometimes starting from light and going to dark, now just with more opaque paint, and the ability to redo highlights if needed.

Just found this site! WOW! This is wonderful. Really enjoy your work. I am mesmerized by it. Watching you paint while describing what you are doing is very instructional and entertaining. You will, as you learn to see and compare. For me I am 75. I USE Joseph Koensgen as a motivator. I use to paint when younger, but someone took all my art supplies, sketch books with notes, and paintings. I could not afford Renter insurance at the time, and had to quit school. As a child I use to skip school, and OWEN GROMME a well known Wildlife ARTIST, friend of Robert Bateman , and Owen would find me sketching the wildlife. He is the one who taught me. But In Wisconsin WILDLIFE in the Well known art gallery near the Milwaukee Lake Front did not accept his work ,or an wildlife art. It is considered by many galleries all over NOT TRUE ART, but as they would say even about Robert Bateman's just good illustrative work or good copy. All the old school of learning art, was tossed out in the 60's. I have been noticing some of the modern art, Abstract , right now it is swirling the acrylic paint. Yes it is pretty. but it is hit or miss, and the other abstract art I have been seeing many of the ladies doing all look much the same, blotch face of different colors, and water drip pain, or toss together . More of ones self. not one to HELP to teach to appreciate. and protect. others. as wild life art does. MORE and more photographers are tweeking their art to too look like done in acrylic ,oil , water color , pastels. and calling it FINE ART. yet they keep the photo eyes of the animals. I have seen photographers go into the wooded areas, and trample all over rare wild plants, and when they see one they like, they will bend it to get a better photo. destroying the rare flower from going to seed. And they post it , but have no clue what the name of the flower was called. WILD LIFE far too many people can name perhaps ten birds, or animals , and less if shown . Trees , flowers, they do not know. It is a tree. ..This is why I hope you continue to learn, to help educate the need for wildlife. THERE are so many plants, like Singing Nettle , as much as I do not like it , it is one of the best for health purposes . BEST USED AS A TEA. Comfrey another. Well sorry , for ease dropping into your note. WISH YOU BEST OF LUCK.
paintings like these are way better than any photograph in my opinion since to me it really looks like if I am being there looking at this misty scene. Thank you for explaining all the details. Relearning painting with completely new environment here, so it is super helpful to see in-depth details such as how you go back and forth with semi dry brushes.

I really enjoy your paintings. I'd like to paint a loon for my mom as a Christmas gift. I like the idea of the fog you captured. Adds a great feel to your portrait. I'm learning how to add oils to my finished acylic design. I might be good enough by Christmas. Ha! Great work!

Love it! Realistically speaking, for something this foggy, monochromatic, and abstract , how many days do you need to work on it to get the soft attention to detail in acrylic? Looks like you’re flying though the details!
Thank you!! This painting took about 2.5 weeks total. 2 Weeks for the background and then about 3 days for the Loon. And a lot of that time comes from making minor adjustments after a section is painted, just to make sure everything looks right, and for this one especially to have that soft look. I do paint really quickly, but that's just from years and years of practice! I've also gotten very used to how the brush and paints work for my style and so it's a combination of painting fast where I can, and then slow when it counts!
Thank you! I mainly used a larger brush, like a round 5 or 6 with a nice point to get thin straight lines, and then alternated dark and light with very subtle colour mixing to the shades right. It's bit hard to describe in a comment, so in the future I may do a video about painting water to answer some of the common questions I get.

The common loon , I have not done this one yet. Want to do a pair.. I love their call, on those misty mornings. Been a while since I been at a lake in Wisconsin where I could hear their call. Hope I can this 2024 early summer, or NC. if I visit my sister. NOT looking forward to the visit. I feel uncomfortable. She is the kind of person when you get up to to something, and she is all ready straightening out the sofa you were sitting on. My items I bring along becomes an eye sore. If i make the bed I slept in , she straightens it out. Hotel or Motel might be best if I go. What type of canvas board do you use? DID not catch that in one of your Pod Casts.
I love hearing their call as well! One of my favourite sounds in the summer when I venture out into the wilderness and spend a weekend on a beautiful lake. And I'm painting on something called hardboard - I'm going to be making a video about how I prepare these boards for painting. It's a very smooth surface which I really like for painting fine detailed work, so stay tuned for that video!

Thank you!! Yes, loons are so great! For the eye it was a mixture of gray, alizarin crimson, raw umber, and a bit of cadmium red.

@@JosephKoensgen I can never blend Colors so well with acrylic I’m just not skilled enough. Acrylic blending is so darn hard. Easier with oils
