    That’s amazing! Thanks for sharing. I recently painted my first acrylic bird, it was a blue tit. It was quite challenging because I didn’t worked with acrylic paint before, but for a first try I’m really happy with how it turned out. However, I still have a lot to learn and video’s like this are a huge help. You explain it really well, shows it very clearly step by step, and I appreciate that. Have a nice day, greetings from the Netherlands!

      Thank you so much! I'm happy to share and I'm so glad to hear that this was helpful! Acrylics can take some time to get used to and be quite different from other mediums, so I like to try and offer as much info as I can. So it's great that you had success with your first acrylic bird and I hope that your future bird paintings continue to go well!!

    I enjoy watching. My American Robin is of a male I had seen in my yard the 2nd year with his Wife. Only I did the male, because he is a bit different. with a touch of a black bib, on his chest. I did with him 2 of their young, while mom was off somewhere with the other two, after leaving from a broken garage window, . I live in a Small Apartment, so my work is done on 11x 14.Would go smaller, but other pod cast artist seem to discourage it , if one wants to be successful to sell. Personally it would be easier to go size smaller to print. Less costly. love your Aspen tree, We are loosing all of ours due to the Ash Emerald Borer. I did not see NO BIRDS in one park, they planted and sprayed wild flowers with poison of some sort to help rid the Borer, but must of killed a LOT OF BIRDS TOO. near Lake Michigan, in Wisconsin where I live.

      Appreciate you watching! Hope it was helpful! This painting is 12 x 16", so it's whatever size works for you and what works for the composition of the painting. And I almost always do my prints a little smaller than the original as that usually works better and keeps the cost of the print a bit lower - especially if I've done a very large original. That's too bad to hear about the loss of the birds around where you live. I love seeing birds and photographing them for reference for my paintings, so I certainly hope they are able to return to the area.

      Thank you! Yes, for feathers I use a few brushes - Round 0, 1, and 2. Here's a link where I get them from.

    I just found this tutorial!! It’s what I have been looking for. Question.. do you have a handout or process for drawing the bird. I need to know how to draw the bird.

    • @JosephKoensgen
      @JosephKoensgen  8 місяців тому +1

      Thank you!! I'm glad this was what you were looking for! I don't have any materials at the moment for this one, as I worked from 2 different photos I took of some Robins - combining different elements from each to get the pose I liked. I would recommend working from photos and breaking it down into shapes, focusing on proportions first, and then adding details from there. By all means, use my painting as a reference!

      @@JosephKoensgen thank you for responding. I will! I have been collecting some photos of robins since they are my favorite! I was really paying attention to the layering of color which helps me a lot. Yep… trial and error! That’s why I like acrylics! They are pretty forgiving which I need!!

    Do you use an extender to keep your paint moist. I notice your paint stays on your brush without constantly reloadin. It just seems to flow off so easy.

    • @JosephKoensgen
      @JosephKoensgen  7 місяців тому

      I just use water to keep my paint moist. I've tried a few extenders or mediums, but I didn't like the texture it had while working with the paint. As well, I want the paint to dry quickly on my board so that I can work fast and continuously. So I just keep adding water to my paint mixture as needed - which is quite often, but I'm very used to it by now, and then I can also have a lot of control over how thick or thin I want my paint to be.

    This is great. Thank you! How do you get the outline of the tree and robin? Do you sketch that yourself with a pencil by looking at a photograph? Do you always sketch an outline first? Thanks again for sharing.

    • @JosephKoensgen
      @JosephKoensgen  Рік тому +2

      Thank you!! Yes, I'm working from photos for all my paintings (most of which I've taken myself). And then I put all the lines on there first with pencil before I start painting. I'll use a few different methods - sometimes a grid or measuring things out from my photo, sometimes I draw it on free hand depending on how confident I am that I can get it right, and in this case I had the Robin drawn out on paper that I could tape to the painting and move around before deciding exactly where to put it. I often do this if I'm unsure of the best place for the animal and then I can balance the composition without have to constantly redraw it if I'm unhappy with where it is.

      Thank you!! Glad you like the longer video! I'm able to go into more detail and description of what I'm doing. And because my work can be quite detailed, I don't want to rush through showing what I'm doing.

    Amazing work! I never thought that it would be possible to get such a detail with acrylics! Incredible! Are you using a medium to prevent quick drying or just water? Thank you for sharing, it's so inspiring 😊

    • @JosephKoensgen
      @JosephKoensgen  Рік тому +1

      Thank you so much!! I'm happy to share! I'm just mixing my paint with water. I have tried a couple of different mediums and didn't like the texture or the extended drying time. I paint really quickly so it works quite well to have the paint dry fast so that I can put many layers on in a short amount of time. So glad that this was inspiring!

      @JosephKoensgen  Рік тому

      Thank you!! Yes! I'm painting on wood - a hardboard that's also called masonite that I prime with gesso and sand smooth. It's a great surface for fine detailed work. I'm planning to make a video about how I prepare the boards for painting so hopefully it will be helpful!
