      The great shame is that there won't be any railroad at all in South Miami Dade. The pols are all bought out by the highway and trail lobbies, who love seeing rail right of way pulled up and removed. The corresponding rail lobby is very weak in comparison and does more harm than good. I remember when this line and the FEC along South Dixie Highway (U.S.1) were both active. When the FEC line was pulled up in 1988, it was still in great condition. The segment through Dadeland was completely redone in the early 80's with new grade crossings, new crossing signals and cantilevers, concrete ties, and welded rail with lots of ballast. Metrorail was also built with its supports angling outward instead of going straight down. This added millions of dollars to the cost of this segment of the elevated line, and it costs more to maintain it here. This allowed the track to go under Metrorail. It was built wide enough to accommodate two tracks. In my opinion, it looks like they initially planned to keep the tracks in place but the lobbyists got to them quick. The busway that replaced the track cost 10 million dollars per mile and has been a failure in terms of getting good ridership. At roughly 3 million per mile per track, it would have been cheaper to have a newly built double track line all the way to Florida City. They could also have redone the Ludlam corridor all the the way to the Miami International Airport and still spend less than what they spent on the busway. Two new rock pits came into being just south of Florida City between U.S.1 and Card Sound Rd. that would have provided aggregate loads for trains, but with no track, all this is hauled by truck. The residents along South Dixie Highway want rail, not bus. Half-penny tax for rail transit was passed early 2000s and has raised almost 3 billion dollars. More than half of this has been confirmed to be going for highway projects and not rail. This could have paid not only rail to South Miami Dade, but also north along NW 27th Ave to Opa Locka. FECs Miami Springs yard has less than half the trackage it used to have, and there is no room to expand the intermodal facility there. Containers from the Port of Miami are filling up all available space along where NW 68 Ave is. If there is more traffic of this kind, there is no place to put it. The space between U.S.1 and Card Sound Road would be perfect for an inland container port and has plenty of room, and intermodal traffic from the Florida Keys and Southern Monroe County would be more practical. Rail is way better for the environment than highway.

    What I don’t get is, why is there no apparent thought of using these lines as commuter rail, at least from Miami to Homestead?
    There doesn’t seem to be any plan for any such extension south of the terminus(?) at Miami, yet if I remember Homestead has been a fast growing area since the closure of the AFB due to Hurricane Andrew.

      I wholeheartedly agree with you. It would relieve traffic from our already congested highways, reduce accidents, and pollution. But it's never made it past the proposal stage. You might like this article... miami.curbed.com/2015/8/6/9933036/tri-rail-expansion-homestead-csx

    Railrod82 you need to get of hold of the mayor of City of Homestead and the Director of the Railroad museum/Zoo in Miami to purchase or low lease the abandoned rail from the museum to Homestead start a tourist operation. To benefit the Museum and City of Homestead...Dinner train , rent a locomotive operation , etc Let keep the line active before CSX removes it. Get involve in local politics. Get signatures for a petition to service the rail at rail shows and other events..

    • @railrol82
      @railrol82  4 роки тому

      You're right about salvaging going to cost big bucks. You got 12 miles of tracks with mostly rotted wooden ties, spikes missing, and tie plates out of place. Not to mention mowing and replacing crossing equipment. It isn't worthwhile for a RR to buy this for 2 potential customers (that currently use trucking). I don't know why CSX shot down Tri-Rail. Maybe their asking price is too high or they'd like to use it as a tax write off. Thanks as always for the views and comments!
