The Forgotten Abandoned Railroad

- This is the Forgotten abandoned railroad aka CSX Homestead Subdivision in deep South Miami Dade County, Florida ...
At the Kings Highway crossing you will see it as it makes its way behind some backyards and in front of a school (it'd be funny if they had a conductor training program ). Here you will see how see residents selflessly cut the weeds on the tracks (although I'm guessing it's to keep the insects and pests away and not to preserve the line ). It is extremely noticeable as right where one persons property line ends, so does the cleanliness on the track. They start to turn into a forest essentially not visible in many parts. This historic railway was built in 1926 by Seaboard Air Line and even connected with the Miami Extension of the FEC Overseas Railroad en route to the Florida Keys and Key West until the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane destroyed it. This line played a vital role in the history of South Florida as we know it today and unfortunately, it is being left to rot disgracefully. I think it deserves better. Some investor with money should purchase it and make a tourism or excursion ride out of it. Join me for some archaeology in this video!

Good morning Roly, I cant say it enough times......It’s so sad to see rails treated in this manner. That one guy who keeps up the property must be a rail fan! Nice to see when people care. Stay safe my friend! 🛤
Good morning John, I hear you and I feel the same way; such a historic line should be treated with more dignity. I wonder if one was to survey 10 random people, how many would be rail fans? Thanks as always for the views and comments!
Hello R, this was again a amazing catch, I love how you show the facist CSX , who love to turn up the signals. like the song "Stairway to Heaven" lol and i used to live right next to a main line of Union Pacific and they ran trains about 20 per day and more on weekends. After a while you will get used to them. I LOVED It. So Mijo thanks again and Please stay safe :-)
Wow, you lived next to the UP main?! That must've been thrilling. Hope all is well, E. Thanks as always for the views and comments!
@@railrol82 I was!!! i truly miss it, it was U P Jefferson sub. and a friend of mine worked for them but he retired. At first i was like i wish they would come by less often and boy they was loud but after while you get use to it. i was about 75 feet from the main line. OMG i loved it and miss it alot. Thanks again Sir :-)
@@erikmcc804 Did anything ever fall from the train?
Morning bro!! Always enjoy watching!!!
GM T! Thank you and hope all is well with you!
I can understand why the people whose property abuts the old CSX Homestead Subdivision would want to maintain the track area along their property lines. Cleaning up that part of the right of way would prevent problems with wildlife. I clocked on the Google Maps hyperlink that followed the tracks to their current end. The actual tracks on Google Maps seem to just disappear a few blocks south was SW 4th Street. You see that there are tracks then there is just gravel. Thanks for taking us to this location.
You jumped the gun, Thomas! I have a video coming up on the end of the line, and it's going to be my grand finale on this series. Hope all is well and that you're staying warm. Thanks as always for the views and comments!
@@railrol82 All is well with me and my family. At 10 AM CDT in the South Suburbs of Chicago, it is 9 degrees and feels the same. That is no wind chill. High temperature today is supposed to me near 14 degrees. Tonight's low is supposed to be -9 degrees. It is snowing very lightly now. Large snow flakes falling gently to the ground. The highest daily temperature this week is supposed to be 21 degrees. Enjoy the warm weather in Florida!
That's a good idea that an investor should purchase this line and make it into an excursion line. Maybe if you put the the word out on Facebook or anywhere something would happen
The thing is CSX doesn't want to sell it. One local commuter train company didn't even make it past the proposal stage! Thanks as always for the views and comments, Georgette!
Great video Roly! All the lights on this poor line are indeed pointing up towards heaven, very true wards. Mother nature will take the line back long before csx dose. Love the updates buddy!
Truer words have never been spoken, "Mother nature will take the line back long before CSX" and I agree 100%. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks as always for the views and comments, Blake!
cool video i lived in Miami in 1970"s remember the fec line running along rt 1 to homestead from dadeland area there were trains weekly there
Those were the days! That's exactly right, it was a weekly produce train and the last one to Homestead ran in 1984. Thanks as always for the views and comments, Doug!

Very cool Roly! No trains but a barking dog! That would be just my luck. Lol! Great trackumentation my friend! I'm still not sure how to spell that! Cheers, Danny
I'm loving that term, trackumentation! It's always a pleasure to read your comments my friend. Hope all is well and you're staying warm!
That just amazes me that CSX leaves this track sit and rot away.
That's what happens when you have a lot of money, you don't even care what happens to some of your resources. Thanks as always for the views and comments, C!
Good Sunday Morning Roly!!
Looks like that parcel at the end is for sale!

Hi Roly: as always an informative and interesting video. Don’t know the answer as to what the future is for this subdivision. My guess is it will continue to deteriorate until it’s declared unsafe or an eyesore and pulled up by the powers to be. Thanks for posting, see you Wednesday. Edward
Good morning Edward, I agree with your guess; with there being no customers and not enough population to justify passenger trains, CSX or no other RR would have any business interest here. It would just rot away indefinitely. I don't think anyone would want to pick up the bill for pulling 12 miles of rails either. Thanks as always for the views and comments!

Good morning, Bill. Thanks as always for the views and comments!
You do get some people who buy a home by something that obviously creates a bit of noise then complain about the noise. In the UK we often hear of city dwellers who move to the country then complain about cockerels crowing or church bells ringing.
Like the neat grass border by part of the railway, guess that property owner liked the railway.
That is one of the most ironic things I've heard, a city dweller complaining about the country! Thanks as always for the views and comments, Geoff.
I am thinking about moving to Florida sometime to see more abandoned railroads myself

Ever since CSX abandoned the Homestead Subdivision, I wondered what their logic was by folding the crossing lights upward. Yes, the crossings are deactivated, but I wondered what the point is in doing that. I have seen when other railroads abandoned unwanted lines, they either turn the lights around so that the lenses face each other like I've seen on some abandoned Norfolk Southern crossings or those railroads don't even bother doing that at all. They just simply cut the power and walk away.
Good point, Gm. Maybe they face them up so they aren't subjected to being hit by rocks or what not. But at the same time, facing them up they are subject to rain and constant punishment by the sun. Thanks as always for the views and comments!

yesterday found a old trestle that has new york central on it

The archeologist has spoken.
My main man, C! Thank you very much.
Always nice to visit sunny south Florida. I was surprised though, I didn't see any sacrifices along the track. It must be a suburban environment that supports Santeria because it seems like the more rural you go it seems like the less you see and unfortunately smell. Rotten chicken reeks about as bad as anything dead except dead human. Thank God I haven't smelled that yet, or at least that I know. I've smelled some pretty bad Sugar Honey Ice Tea. Enjoy your videos, and have you ever considered covering the sugar cane harvesting? If not can you keep rolling on down to the end of the line in Homestead? Is there any evidence of the Overseas Railway still existing on any of the Florida Keys, specifically Key West?
I hate illegal jumpers! To those who dump illegally just pay the tipping fees at the dump or transfer station it's really easy.
Good observation on lack of sacrifices. That is because we are in Homestead, FL which is about 30 miles South of Miami. Here, the main demographic is Mexicans who are mostly Catholic. In Miami, most of the Cubans there practice Santeria. It's funny you mention covering sugar cane harvesting. I went to Central FL a few weeks ago and I don't know what is going on, if it is something covid related or a strike, but all the sugar cane were ready to be harvested and nothing was happening. They were about to start withering. There's about 5 videos left in this series until we get to the end of the line. There are still some bridges of the former Overseas RR in the Keys. Illegal dumpers have no regard for private property, I bet they don't dump stuff in their living room like that. Thanks as always for the views and comments, Mike!
At the end of the vid, when you're going to your car, that sure looked like a realtor's for sale sign between your car and the tracks.
Good observation, Tom. Yes, it was a for sale sign. But for that land, not that railroad lol.
@@railrol82 😢
@@tommanion5504 My thoughts exactly!
Must have been a beautiful line when it was active and it could be again
Yes, South FL has natural beauty. If they ever decide to restore it, it will be beautiful once again! Thanks as always, Alfonse!
I think when I go to Florida, I might just buy the line, an abandoned locomotive, and some railcars and turn the line into the Kodatt business so at least the line is saved.
When you do, let me know so I can come film your restoration!
@@railrol82 Have you ever tried to restore any abandoned railroads
@@nickastridandtoothlessthen5494 No, because they are private property so I can't do anything other than film them.
Have you seen any markers for AT&T or other fiber running along this RR? It seems to be very common on other railroad lines.
I haven't been on the lookout for any, but l will now. I appreciate the heads up! Thanks as always for the views and comments!
I feel for anybody who would buy a house along that line before expecting to see trains and then finding out too late that the line is slated for abandonment. It would be like Stan and Kyle in “South Park” screaming “Shenanigans! SHENANIGANS!!!!”
But is IS nice to see that at least one part of the line is cared for...until the property line ends, and then it’s worse than ever with the trash and detritus on top of the weeds run amok! I hate it when people are that lazy and just dump their trash wherever they want instead of doing the right thing. Just because people live “deep blue collar” doesn’t mean they have to be slobs!
Hey DD, my computer is acting funny. I thought l had replied to this comment and now it shows it under "comments I haven't responded to". By any chance, do you think it posted twice on your end? I remember responding "You don't have to be rich to be clean."
@@railrol82 Believe it or not, this is the first reply here too! I guess the cybernetic tantrum hit harder than we both thought. Oh well, feces occurs. Just remember my Rule #29: Never trust anything mechanical or electronic more complicated than a knife and fork! (Gibbs has his rules, I have mine!). And I agree-cleanliness and wealth aren’t necessarily synonymous with each other!
@@dragondancer1814 LOL @ feces occurs! That is an instant classic. I can see you building an empire out of this idea! Yes ma'am, technology can be your best friend or worst enemy. Have a great Thursday!
If I lived there I would turn lemons into lemonade. I'd get a rail speeder or car and ride the rails for fun from time to time. Probably get some kind of used brush cutter and cut a path on the line where possible. I'd have a good time on it with the speeder.
If you ever decide to move here and do that, I'll gladly be your 1st mate! Thanks as always for the views and comments!
WOW! THE HOUSE WAS CHEAP BECAUSE OF THE TRACKS, AND THEY'RE NOT USED! Good deal! I don't need trains keeping me awake at night. My kids can play on the tracks without getting run over!

How to tell an abandoned railroad crossing:
You see random unpaved trails crossing the streets.
RxR is still on the pavement
Railroad Emergency Boxes.
You're right on the money, CH. Thanks as always for the views and comments!
If the signals are folded up but it's not marked exempt, do vehicles with placards still have to stop?
Good question.... Yes, I've noticed several county buses stop at these crossings as l was filming. Thanks as always for the views and comments, Johnny!
If the last train came through to pull out the stored cars where did that all go? If then it would be abandoned.
They took all the stored cars up North to the Hialeah Yard. Then I imagine they got loaded or took somewhere they could be of use. Thanks as always for the views and comments, N.
Got to love our favorite railroad, they just love leaving tracks to rot. If tracks are officially abandoned, csx should have no rights to it. The state should be able to take over them.
They remind me of a spoiled kid that never cleans their room! I know CSX filed for discontinuance of service with the Federal Registrar on March 2019, for the last 12 miles of this track; which are all the crossings I've been covering in this series. Thanks as always for the views and comments, Celio!
Hey Roli what the process of reactivite a railroad line
Aw, poor crossing. What if one day the line came back to life?
I think we have a better chance of seeing pigs fly. There are no more customers on the line and not enough population for a passenger train. These rails are just going to rot away here. Thanks as always for the views and comments, Minnesota!
Hey Roli how many customer's are left on that line ?
How often this customer get a railcar on their spur
When are you going to find abandoned train tracks that Amtrak used to run on???
Honestly, I don't think Amtrak owns any tracks. They use other companies tracks. I know in the SE they use CSX tracks.
If you had to put a price on the CSX line, what would it be because I wanna save the line when I move to Florida if it is still there. Thanks for your archaeology works. I can't wait to see your videos in other states. I like to watch trains all the time. the last one I saw was on Lazy row in Atlanta Illinois and it had 2 semi-truck trailers but the rest was cargo containers(ones you see on ships) Lincoln usually only sees the cargo container trains on the Springfield subdivision. Lincoln also has the CN Peoria subdivision and a spur to the paper plant, the spur is the remains of the Havanna district railroad. The spur rarely sees trains and the CN Peoria subdivision sees a train maybe 1 to 2 times a week.
Good question, I don't think anyone in the general public knows the answer to that price question. But I can tell you that just a few miles East of here, in 1988 FEC Railway sold about 10 miles of track to the state of FL for 6 million dollars. If that was what it cost 33 years ago, imagine what it would cost now! Thanks as always for the views and comments!

There's a good section that run from Krome ave to sw 216 st is a long straight line almost a mile or so long.
Disclaimer: I don't know the legality of it, BUT (lol) I agree with you that the section between 216 and Krome ave is the longest, best stretch to do so.
