David Nash has been known to pull this on contractors, including myself, for years. He owes you money and tells you his dad is a lawyer so just try to sue him. Unfortunately, after your own lawyer fees, it's not worth pursuing, and he knows it and uses it since his daddy is his lawyer. Him and his father should lose their license in Michigan as far as I am concerned, a real POS.
The school should really not have somebody with apparent moral lapses coaching children…..the lawyers are complicit in this and the state bar should investigate…
I've been a builder for 40 years, and even to this day I'm extremely nervous and cautious when I have to ask for a LEGITIMATE overage, and I often "eat" it just to avoid any confrontation. Also, when I see something coming that will add to the price, I always notify the customer and get it documented and approved in advance. In my opinion, Dave needs to be charged with extortion and let the courts sort it out. It's a mystery to me how guys like this manage to stay in business because word travels fast in small town America, or at least it used to.
I'm in a completely different industry (Information Technology) and I absorbed overages on the regular, assuming it wasn't anything insane. I vaguely remember some saying along the lines of- a satisfied customer might tell 10 people how happy they are with you, but a pissed off customer will tell 100 people how much you suck. Fair or not, that reflects my general experience of human nature. Better to lose a few dollars now, than have your reputation damaged (i.e. lost business) later - most of the time, anyway.
Unfortunately in small towns these types of people are untouchable because they give money to the right people. They give donations to the police department, to schools, and even volunteer their time and money to school programs. It's why he said he was coaching basketball. He's probably not good at basketball but the school wants his contributions.

I'm a contractor myself and can't tell you how many times I encouraged my clients to check my website and references but was told "I trust you". I've never cheated anyone but I think they are crazy not to check me out. ANYONE can be a crook and it's up to the client to do their diligence. When there's thousands of dollars at stake, you'd think it would be automatic.

Tough to find a decent home builder these days. Ours was lacking, my mom and sisters builder was difficult, our neighbors weren’t happy, etc. Like geez man just do it right and charge appropriately and you’ll never run out of work because people will be tripping over each other to pay you. But that’s too difficult, everyone wants to spend a ton of time and effort to cut corners and half ass it.
