    What up, Smart Rapper! I’m Rob Level, and today we’re going over 11 songwriting secrets for rappers. These are ideas to get you up and working on music every day.
    Writer’s block is a real thing, and unless you have some good tools for writing music, you might get caught up and get in your head so much you can’t make music.
    It happens to the best of us, but the more music you’re making, the better you’re getting, the more attention you’re getting, more success etc, so definitely pay attention.
    Alright, let’s get into it.
    [Intro]
    1) Don’t Rely only On Memory
    Write things down. Or better yet - do voice memos. Sometimes when you’re really in the zone, you reach all kinds of cool combinations and melody or lyric ideas that are GONE unless you record them somehow.
    Use the notepad in your phone’s free apps as well to make sure you remember good lyrics that pop into your head. You’ll be teaching your brain to value doing this.
    Don’t rely on your memory to remember it ! You won’t, or you’ll remember a limited, simplified version of the original later, and that really cool line, pattern, or melody combination you created is gone.
    If you have a cool idea in your head throughout the day or at work, duck into the bathroom and record it on your voice memos real quick. You’ll thank yourself later when you go back and see all the cool lines and work you’ve done, and it will be easier to put songs together.
    2) Write How You Talk/Rap
    A lot of rappers’ flow doesn’t sound natural because they aren’t actually rapping how they speak; they are rapping how they were taught to write in English class at school.
    That’s why you hear those awkward lines where people are trying to cram a bunch of words in that don’t fit, or are overly concerned with being grammatically correct.
    Try to attack it more from the angle of the way you talk - not how you write. Use phrases you use in daily life. You’ll automatically be more confident and comfortable and just build better, more natural lyrics from there.
    3) Memorize Your Lyrics
    As you’re writing your song and working on each verse and the hook, memorize your lyrics as you go. That way, by the time you’re recording, you’ll be extremely confident and literally “know your stuff.”

    you're right about recording what you write. you'll forget and lose it forever if you don't record. flow like you talk? hmmm it depends what style of flow you're tryin to make. i try to flow in the old 90s hiphouse rap flow mixed with other rappers. you're also right about imagining your voice as a percussion instrument- not only must it go on beat but it must fit the rhythm's composition - not just flow anywhere. and yes accounting the breathing when you write is important. but i've also learned that if you can hear it in your mind - you can perform it with your mouth it just takes a lot trial and errors and little by little knowing where to breathe in and out goes as your perform it over and over. i bought my rhyming dictionary when i was 18 and yes it is a very useful tool that i still use but i find them lacking in the way they structured the book. for example hat and cat rhyme in the book but pack and rat are in different sections of the book so i made my own rhyming dictionary 10 years ago. damn you wrote 48 songs in one month with only 6 hours a day?? i wish i could make that much in a month. my problem is i rarely like what i make so i lag when i've made so much and feel like either i want to erase a lot or start over on a new song and in between it's a lot of harsh self criticism which also slows me down. I have a question for you smart rapper-- if you were to write a specific rhythm first, for the flow of your rap, and after filled it in with words, don't you think it would be very difficult to throw in punchlines as well and make the punch come out at the right time in the rhythm. i rarely get lucky like that. if you can do this please make a video showing how you do this. My main thing is flowing with complex music composition and i haven't been able to throw the punchlines that much because i write over rhythm that i hear in my head first as i hear the music. i really appreciate your insight.

    Good technique when you run into writer's block is to try what I call a rhyme tree... Say you got a dope bar and you get stuck with connecting the next following bar, just go head and take the main end rhyming word or phrase in your scheme. Forget focusing on the actual full bar at this point. Just focus on the syllables and sound of your rhyme and make a "tree" branching off Into as many rhymes as you can come up with that match. Once you got a good amount of unique rhymes you can browse through them and start using the best ones to craft full bars with when possible. Usually just doing this exercise will help jog your creativity and get your ideas flowing again, even if you dont use all or most of the rhymes that you branch off.
    Example:
    The first bar: Ya better mention me when ya mention the greats/
    Benjamin's face
    Pendulum sways
    Penne on my plate
    Better with age
    Venomous snakes
    Selling em weight
    Tell by the taste
    Them margielas is fake
    Get head on a date
    Gelatin shape
    Pelican steak
    You dont have to do the full multisyllablic rhymes, you can break it into each word of the phrase to rhyme individually then develop the phrases until you're able to easily craft multis. Have fun with it. The rhymes in your tree dont even have to make sense at first, just see how many rhymes and slant rhymes you can come up with. It will greatly improve your writing skills especially if you do it as a regular drill, but it can always be busted out in emergencies when you start getting writers block in the middle of creating a verse.
    Reply with some bars y'all can come up with using this method to follow up my example bar. Use the tree I started to help.

    yo rob... right now im finding my biggest issue jamming up my creative work flow is beats. i may be being over selective. but at the same time im not trying to just settle for any beat if its not capturing the vibe and sound to match the concept in mind. when searching for beats all i can find are trap beats, which yeah theyre pretty dope but if your trying to tell a story or have some lyrical concept in mind trap beats can be difficult to execute those types of songs properly. so then you start looking for non trap beats and everything sounds like its from 1994. its like theres a huge gap in time missing between like the 90s and now when it comes to finding beats. basically i was just wondering your thoughts on where a good source for instrumentals would be/ your opinion on fixing this problem. it is so inefficient to spend hours on youtube looking for a beat and not only that it kills the inspiration after 2 hours of listening to beats that werent hitting. appreciate your thoughts man thank you

    • @Keeakev
      @Keeakev 5 років тому +2

      I hear you on that! I honestly don't think there is anything wrong with being over selective. I've spent hours looking for a beat, found the one, and then knocked out a really solid track. Like 2-3 hours sometimes.
      I partnered up with a producer who's doing custom beats, if you want to hit me up @keeakev I can link you with him. We just started working together and it might be an option that works for you too

    • @kevinsal26
      @kevinsal26 5 років тому +1

      @@Keeakev yea man absolutely I was just thinking that's the route to go I have over 20 concepts down, bars( that I'll obviously have to adjust to the flow once i have the beats), message, weather verses will be 16 or 24s etc. All written and ready to go. Been looking for beats for 3 months throughout the whole process and literally only have 3 that I'm going to definitely use. If you could share the info I would appreciate it. The beats the only thing preventing me completing at this point

    • @Keeakev
      @Keeakev 5 років тому +1

      @@kevinsal26 Yeah I think that it's necessary at some point to try and tailor your sound with a producer. Do you have an email or something? Don't want to blow up Rob's page with their info
