  • Should you buy a cheap Ducati? Logic says probably not, but when was buying a motorbike a logical decision?
    In this series Dave Hewson buys a Ducati 748 for less than £3000. But was it a good buy or will it turn out to be a lemon.
    Watch Dave as he strips and rebuilds the bike and finds out exactly what's good and what's not

    I bought a 02 Ducati Monster 620 with 12k miles. Picked it up for 950$. My goal was keep it under 1000$ in repairs. 2 months and LOTS of research later I got her running for under $260. She likes to misfire on the horizontal cylinder, but it is still rideable. Just took her for 100 mile ride yesterday to really test her out and it runs good enough

    Nice bike. I bought a 01 996 in 2016. 748 frame with 996 built by a well known Ducati race bike builder. When I purchased it she had 4k on engine and 6k on frame. Paid 5800. After commuting for 35000 she let go (bearing) I had it completely gone through. All maintenance and rebuild by a professional local shop. In total from purchase to now I have close to 20k wrapped in her. People always ask if I'll sell her, no because I would want too much.

    Had a second hand 900SL slabby years ago, wonderful thing, started on the button as long as the batter y was fully charged, only had to think about cornering and it had done it, only grief I can recall was bleeding the clutch slave cylinder but a zip tie round the lever overnight sorted that one out. Thoroughly enjoyed it for a couple of years and sold it for more than I paid for it, winner winner chicken dinner

    I would so love a 916... The problem is they're so desirable that they tend to hold their price quite well. The RSV1000/Mille is also a good value alternative if you're on a budget, they're pretty cheap now because they were never really iconic. Doesn't look as nice though :(

    I’ve been down this road. I have 3 Ducati’s. In 2016 I bought a “cheap” 2001 ST2. $12,000 later, I have a beautiful sport touring bike that people often mistake for brand new. I did all of my own work except for paint. And the bike is now worth maybe $3500! But I enjoy working on it. It becomes an obsession.

    Actually they likely have the rear wheel eccentric upside down. it needs to be flipped and should be in the lower 1/2 of its travel NOT the top. If left in the top the rear wheel will hit the pipes, chain will wear the lower swingarm near the pivot. Ride height rod should NOT be adjusted for a fix to a bigger issue.

    • @chrisenright7003
      @chrisenright7003 4 роки тому +1

      Putting the rear hub in the upper half of the swingarm is the go-to fix for midgets. Full size people should always have the hub in the bottom half.

    18 months ago I paid ~$3,600 US for a 2005 Monster 620ie Dark 2-Disc with just over 10,000 miles on it. It hadn't been ridden much by the prior owner so it was due for belts and valve check. Got that check done at the end of that winter, put new tires on her, replaced the front rim (because I didn't like something I saw on it), all told my investment was just under $5,000 US. I would do it again in a heart beat! I love this thing, but am kicking around the idea of getting my hands on a newer vintage Multistrada now.
    Yeah, I've been a Ducati fan since I was a kid back in 1995 when I first saw a 916.

    Without viewing the videos, as a former owner, the answer is yes, with caveats:-
    You are buying it with your heart & soul
    You can afford the running costs - if you can maintain it yourself, it is easier, if you can pay someone, buy it.
    Get the right colour! Red and the ultra rare silver & green versions are the best lookers!
    Put proper exhausts on it, with the chip for the fuel injection and high flow air filter.
    I'm off to watch now! You'll probably read from me next week!

    The answer is that there's no such thing as a cheap Ducati. Expect to replace every part short of the frame every 5k miles. Expect shops to turn you away because they don't work on Italian bikes. Expect the shops that will take it to charge extra for hunting down mysterious electrical issues that could only be caused by the bike being haunted. If you want to save money just buy a speedboat.

    It's not easy to kill a ducati I tried mine it had 130 thou kms but no sign of wear. As a matter of fact with this many kms you won't need valve adjustments as the bedding perfect. The belts are cheap and easy to replace every 20000 kms and put shell advance oil in. Very cheap to run. The only downside is that it wears the back tyre quickly caused by the extreme torque.

    Long story short is, a cheap one is cheap for a reason- I found that out the hard way 😩
    Mine looked reasonable at first (rose tinted glasses) and despite the service history file I found it had a misfire so a trip to the mechanic found all the opening rockers had de-chromed. They are £100+vat each new but I found a company who re faced the original ones for £40+ vat each.
    By time I’m done with everything I probably could have bought a low mileage 748R for less!!
    Buy cheap buy twice!

    • @obsession_engineering
      @obsession_engineering  2 роки тому +1

    There is no such thing as a cheap Ducati,new ones have a massive purchase price and they are a P.O.S..Ducati make beautiful bikes but only when placed under designer lighting and draped with models crammed full of modern materials like silicon and titanium mesh.Second hand Ducatis enter the market because the owner can no longer keep them running and eat on a regular basis.Buy the Ducati that gives you a stiffy and remove all the ignition components and put it in pride of place in your home.Removing the ignition is overkill as it is highly unlikely it will start anyway.Sit back enjoy lie to women or men and become a Ducati owner and lie about rider

    Familiar story... I bought my 2000 900SS with a ridiculous bid on ebay in the USA. Also, it was close enough for me to pick up. I could have upgraded my 2003 Aprillia RSV to a ten year newer V4 for what I've spent on the Red Duck trying to get it back in shape. Ducati parts air either made of silver plated gold, or Pure Unobtanium. Still need a new lower fairing (found a fiberglass repro in GB for about $400 USD, but then still need to get it here) mine was held together with hot glue. And then I need fork lowers for the Showas, mine have some puzzling gouges that a wet stone didn't quite reduce, and chew through seals... Right now need belts and valve adjust. just wait until you try to get to the vertical cylinder head... Chasing an intermittent engine miss, clutch sounds like a can of rocks, riding position absolutely sucks. Have exceeded the purchase price with brakes, rear shock, battery, instrument cluster, chain and sprockets, wheel bearings, and rear suspension bushings. It is pretty to look at though.
