    Brilliant Channel. I own a 1999 ST4- 916 motor, I purchased for $2,000 US. The previous owner was an older gentlemen, who took care of his toys. So I scored. The gentlemen seller said he listed it low to sell quick and did not get a lot of interest. Browsing through the internet i see low priced bikes and i believe there are a few good deals, I guess you have to know what works for you.
    I own two Harleys, a Honda STX1300 and a GSXR track bike. But I love and ride the most my $2,000 Ducati. Ride Safe & Stay Healthy.

    Thanks for making this series, I owned a 748 from 1997 to 2004. Bought it brand new and enjoyed every minute of it, when you started the bike for the first time the sound took me right back.

    I have really enjoyed the series on this Ducati refurbishment Dave, entertaining and informative. As someone who enjoys blasting around Lincolnshire on my old SV650S, when I am not stuck working in the Middle East as currently, I thoroughly enjoyed todays footage. Here’s hoping you’ll soon crack 1K subscribers, and looking forward to the next mystery project bike.

    great series of videos, I did much the same with a 996 here in Australia - I added a manual fan switch as the temps get a bit high over here, and i just shorted the side stand switch out but I think I'll incorporate your diode idea with the neutral switch too.

    really enjoyed this series dave!, and some very good tips and tricks in there. I think that was the best way to enjoy the stunning looks and engineering and then to sell it on before the months of niggling problems start showing up -despite all your best efforts. At least you will get to see it again regualarly when adam brings it back for help ;)

    I fell in love with the 748 when I first saw it and I've always wanted one. Now I'm ready to own one so it's a matter of finding the right one. Dave, your videos (all 10) were a pleasure to watch. You revealed everything mechanical that a prospective buyer should know and look for. Plus, I liked your humor. I have no interest in any other bike (unless it's a Ducati). It's the soooooound...music to my ears.

      random fact, back when countries had a colour for racing cars we had green, france had blue, Germany silver and Italy Yellow. Hence the yellow on the Ferrari logo. Therefore yellow is still fast :)

    Loved all of that Dave. Part of the attraction of motorcycles I feel, particularly Italian machines, is that the engineering is on display, and on good trellis frame designs the quality of the welding is also apparent. Compare any Japanese frame for welding quality. Functional and that's about all.
    For a lot of dudes, and quite a few girls I'm sure, the engineering satisfies on a more cerebral level. To my wife, it's just a noisy motorbike, but she misses the point entirely...

    Thoroughly enjoyed this series, thank you. One thing that I didn't get is the diagram for the diode and side stand switch, it shows an earth symbol above 'neutral', did I miss something? Apologies if you've already addressed this. Thanks again.

    As aggravating as my 2000 900SS can be at times, and as painful as it is to commute on, I'm not sure I would part with it. The geometry is uniquely Ducati, as is the wonderful engine. I'm not thrilled with the Showa suspension, but it works. My fairing has a crack where the previous owner had some garage gremlins, so I've been riding it with just the top fairing (like a 1/4 fairing). Needs paint, and that's about all that's left besides the clutch. Mine was a bargain price, too $2000 USD, and maybe I've put another $1000 in (timing belts, brake system rebuild, chain and sprockets fork rebuild, rear suspension, etc.) but mostly blood sweat and tears. My 2003 Aprilia RSV Mille cost me more, and does more, but my heart is with my Big Red Duck. It was a great series, Dave!!! Now time for some cheese cake...

    I guess I'm the only chap to realize in took a load of work and alot of man hours to get that POS right. If you're not a mechanic with skill that project isn't worth it! By any means here in the states if your Ducati goes down depending what the problem is you could lose your riding season. A cheap Ducati seems to come with an expensive headache. Just buy a Ducati t-shirt and puma's. Save the time and money unless, you've got it like that.

    • @obsession_engineering
      @obsession_engineering  3 роки тому +2

      Luckily that bike was generally mechanically sound so although labour intensive it didn't cost the earth, and it's a lovely thing to ride (and look at) , so to me it was worth saving

    • @lrowlands53
      @lrowlands53 3 роки тому +3

      That's a bit extreme. The bike was not a POS when Dave got it. It just needed some TLC. I guarantee you a 20 year old any brand bike would need very similar refurbishing. Stop hating on Ducatis; it's just dumb to do so. One doesn't need supreme skills to be a good mechanic, just patience and care. My 748 came in about the same condition and I did much the same stuff to it but not all in one go. I also did similar work on a 25 year BMW F 650. Both bikes are amazing now and I would take either on a road trip without hesitation - the BMW for comfort and the Ducati for constant bike-gasms.

    • @quincymcneeley8950
      @quincymcneeley8950 3 роки тому

      Lindsay Rowlands Sir given my experience with Ducati it's not extreme. Yes, when Dave got it, it was not a POS because you fixed it and you being skilled as a mechanic should know not everyone can work on a Duc vs a Japanese motorcycle. I love anything on 2 wheel's I've been riding for over 25 years which includes racing "I'm not a mechanic" I think it's fair to say most people aren't, and from my experience Ducati's like Harley's break down faster and more often than any of the Japanese big 3 which is fact! It's indisputable. Also I have alot of friends with Ducati's and Aprilia‘s whom have mechanical problem's often hell I just had to jump start my mate's 2016 panigale 2 weeks ago because it was electrical problem's. My 2005 gsxr 1000 40k miles never one problem recall on the frame if you wheeled the stuffing out of it for possiblity of frame cracking and master cylinder repair. In the perfect world I'd go with a monster they were a better build Ducati. And my friend tried to work on his Ducati and the security feature locked the entire bike up so he had to take it to the shop. So you do have to be skillful to work on Ducati's, our experience with Ducati's is just night and day. Ride safe brother!

    • @lrowlands53
      @lrowlands53 3 роки тому +1

      Quincy McNeeley I may be a bit rare in that mechanical systems are not a mystery to me, they reveal themselves and all submit to care. I feel pretty normal, but must acknowledge some people are just a bit daft about these things, no offence intended. This might seem somewhat rainbows and unicorns, but having at a mechanical challenge as if it’s a battle, with negative feelings and regarding the device as if it is wilfully opposed to you makes a big difference to the process and outcome. I somehow have reverence for most things mechanical - ah, that’s where I’m a bit loopy. Like cooking, if you don’t do it with love and good intention for your eaters, the food is often a disappointment. I don’t find Ducati’s especially unreliable, but Harleys are where my reverence stops - fucking agricultural relics. Yes, Japanese bikes are marvels of reliability, but what would I have to fix on one of those? I’d be bored with the certainty of making my destination every ride. It’s great there are different perspectives though in the end the worldwide brotherhood of riders is priceless. More power to you and ditto on safety. Cheers from Australia.
