I'd recommend not listening to the proudly easily offended crowd. Cancel is one letter away from the truth about them. Their ways only lead to a generation of people unprepared for when something harsh inevitably happens. Softies that will crumble under the smallest amount of pressure like a cake taken out of the oven too soon. Watch the special if you can find it and make up your own mind.
Regarding the whole "art is a lie" thing: Bo has stated in interviews that most of his material definitely comes from a real place, but he does play into the "drama" of it. Like in Inside, he probably felt most of the emotions that he presented in the special, but it's not like it was a constant state of that for an entire year straight. His stage persona - according to himself - is a dramatic version of himself. (This is all from memory, but I'm pretty sure I'm remembering right)
Yeah, I mean, clearly he has a problem with how art is seen and used today, with people reducing it to just "content"
You can get a lot of that from Inside, his song Art is dead and some parts of Make Happy
Yeah I mean a good example also is the ending of Make Happy which he’s always been like “I was playing it up for the camera, it’s a dramatic version of me.” But then also admitted he walked off stage and broke down sobbing and shaking. Like. Ok he “performed” a breakdown but then went and had a real one. I think it just shows that he’s deliberate in how he portrays himself snd his emotions but they clearly come from somewhere real. When watching Inside I felt like it was a similar thing.
Arts up for interpretation that’s the beauty of it. But bo has talked about his panic attacks and unhappiness in interviews before so that part is definitely true.
It’s difficult to make art without using it as a vehicle to represent your own thoughts and feelings. I don’t think Inside was entirely fact or fiction. Yeah, more likely than not he wasn’t actually spending much time living in that one room, but I’m willing to bet it was a representation of how he felt in his own mind during the lockdowns. Isolation, depression, anxiety, agoraphobia, no way to properly release emotions, etc are all something that a surprising amount of us went through, and it really felt as if you were trapped in one room just trying to survive without losing your sanity. He took the concept and created art with it that is easier to understand than the actual feelings themselves. There’s a shocking amount of truth in it, but the actual visuals and music weren’t the truth, it was an illusion aimed at making his experience more relatable and understandable.
You should absolutely take it seriously, even though it’s not real.
Bo’s playing a character, but playing characters is how a ton of art works and it doesn’t give it less weight.

I believe thats a criticism that people dont want to take the effort to talk about serious topics in a meaningful way and show compassion and rather just joke about it.

I think of it less as a criticism and more of just pointing it out. Everyone likes to laugh about tragedy because feeling sorry for people all the time isn't healthy. Its better to make light of something bad

I agree, I believe this song is about how we deal with tragedy in the world, because "the empathy is bumming me out" so someone needs to "heal the world with comedy"
Inside is really a refinement of his previous material-- from the songwriting, the music production, his vocals, the visuals, everything. Sad definitely informed COmedy, although COmedy is coming from an even more specific place-- not just Bo as comedian but as a straight, white, male comedian (see what I did there?). And I fully agree with your assessment-- Bo plays up his emotions, feelings, thoughts, into his stage persona, that's not him, but very much is like him, just amped up to 11.
And, one more time, just because the artist claims "THIS" is what their art means, doesn't mean you have to stop thinking for yourself anyway.

As far as Inside goes, yeah, I think he tapped into the fact that we were ALL depressed and scared for all of 2020. Even though he had a big house and a partner, I'm sure he went through some deep shit that year just as we all did. As a person who has had severe anxiety since childhood myself, it was very strange that my anxiety actually lessened in 2020, and I heard the same from other anxious people. Because EVERYONE was living in that headspace, it didn't feel so lonely. The anxieties of 2020 had a basis in reality and weren't just pointless torture like they have been in the whole rest of my life, and that felt good in a way. To not feel like my brain was just irrational all the time.

I totally agree. Regardless of his living situation or how he filmed Inside, the emotion was real. I think it was just an artistic representation of cumulative emotion as opposed to a singular breakdown documented on film. There is one podcast that he did during the making of Inside. It's more for promo for "Promising Young Woman," but the discussion is about how he's feeling during the pandemic and wanting to create. He doesn't get specific about creating something at that moment, but it's interesting to know in retrospect that he was. He most certainly deals with anxiety. There are a few videos that exist where it's almost painful to watch if you have experienced it and know what to look for. He talks about time he spent in the hospital in high school with bad stomach issues that turned out to be related to it as well. Before Make Happy, he said depression wasn't really a problem for him, so maybe the pandemic was a first for that. That's a guess on my part just from listening to that podcast and trying to glean what I can from things he's said.

I know the episode you’re talking about. Didn’t he also make a joke about being “incapable of experiencing joy” and feeling like he was trapped in his head a little? (Happy sad confused). There was also a written one where he said he was jealous of people who weren’t spiraling during this time and he had a friend who had been forcing him to talk on the phone every day to help keep him above water.
we discuss it a bit on my podcast (we try to break down why everyone’s been obsessed with inside) about how while you could argue the theatrics of his emotions he clearly was still coming from SOME place of truth.
@@crycrywolf I completely agree. I think he's as genuine as it gets. Acting doesn't mean he wasn't feeling it. I didn't mean to infer that if it sounded that way. But I think it's good to point out that a grown man crying is not abnormal or a sign of a mental break. It's also possible to recreate those feelings from a very honest and safe place once you're in a healthy enough place to do so. I'm saying this as a performer. I don't pretend to be an artist of his caliber, but I just respect him even more for that very reason. He's truly gifted.
@@RandiPie71 yeah I mean that’s one thing too. There’s a difference between art made while in the midst of depression versus art made ABOUT depression. Often, art made by someone still trapped in that depressive state isnt as truthful or relatable as someone who is on the other side of it….just because of how disassociative depression can be. It’s almost impossible to communicate what you’re going through WHILE you are in it.
So the argument we made was he really HAD to of been on the other side of what he was struggling with. Or at least have been able to have some distance and perspective for him to communicate these themes with such clarity.

I'm not sure anyone can be totally over something, but that's just coming from a person who has dealt with anxiety and depression on and off most of my life. I'm not suggesting you're saying that either, of course. But it's eeaier (and probably a lot healthier) to revisit those feelings creatively and safely when you're more in control of your instrument. That sounds really wrong, but I think you get what I mean artistically. If his camera broke in the middle of making Inside, I doubt he'd just continue without his equipment being at par unless it was an intentional choice (i.e. Kayla's broken iPhone in Eighth Grade). Our business is only what he chooses to make ours. I feel bad just for knowing what I do through podcasts and what I learn through threads like this because it feels so damned intrusive. I've been able to glean some things about his real life vs his onstage personna through things he's mentioned (like having a good relationship with his dad irl) simply because he's chosen to share it. The rest is not my business, nor would I try to make it so. I noticed the other day that we apparently have someone in common, as we were commenting on the same instagram post (someone I performed with as a child, but would not expect to immediately recognize me or call me an actual friend now). However, I'd not for one millisecond think of finding a way of using that connection when that's the exact sort of parasocial crap he can't stand. I respect him way too much for that. It just admittedly gave me a smile to see it. I won't lie about that. It was a very sweet comment with little emoji hearts, so it was kind of hard not to. 😅

And I think the thing to keep in mind is bo is smart, he knows how his audience reacts, and so we are responding probably exactly how he was comfortable with us responding. We don’t need to feel guilty about it. It’s only as intrusive as he allowed - and I’m also factoring in that he’s a master at making us feel how he wants us to and also is very aware of parasocial relationships. I suspect that’s one reason he’s been so radio silent. Hes being deliberate in how invested he’s allowing everyone to get. I’ve always toed a parasocial line with him, and I’ve seen so many others got pushed over the edge
With inside because of how personal it felt. The comments on any number of his past interviews reflect that. But imagine how much worse if he was actively engaging with us?
And that’s such a sweet story. I’m actually surprised but happy he’s active online somewhat. I hope he’s seen the positive reactions (and ignored any of the hate).
I personally use laughing as a coping mechanism. I didn't even realize I was doing it until someone pointed it out to me. I legit laugh at everything, whether it's funny, sad, awkward. It's just my responce to anything and I neve noticed until recently.
All jokes aside, Bo’s voice sounds really incredible in this song.
I think this song is more of a criticism of the comedy/stand-up industry, and thus the industry he is in himself. He speaks about people capitalising on tragedy. So much of Bo’s work seems to be coated in self-hatred
I genuinely do think Bo Burnham explores a lot about how all art is a lie and that nothing is real. I think he finds it interesting playing the tortured artist and leaning into the tragedy of being a comedian in a world so dark.

Art doesn't even have to be real to mean something, and I'm pretty sure Bo knows that even if apparently some of his fans don't.
It’s so cool to see his genius and genuine torn feelings of his art even at age 22. It’s truly so special for us to have seen him evolve as he gets older to find new ways of expressing those emotions.
I found about Bo through 3 pictures made about the "World on Fire" on 9gag like 7-8 years ago which made me look up who he is. Still makes me laugh to this day.
I really think that “Comedy” is a refined version of a lot of this song
He’s talked about the end of make happy before and said that on stage he’s “playing it up for the camera” and it is an exaggeration of what he’s really going through. I of course believe him about the theatricality, however he also said he walked off stage and broke down sobbing and shaking. So, yes he was “performing” a man in the middle of a breakdown but he walked off stage and had one for real. What does that say about his art? I think art doesn’t have to be 100% accurate or true in the exact moment to be honest or even real.
This is kind of a low intensity version of That Funny Feeling leading into Comedy.
I like the shot he took at comedians for being insensitive and capitalizing on humanity’s worst instincts- that line makes me think this song is centrally a critique of comedy, which is one of his favorite subjects to write about - unpacking and examining the problematic aspects of his life, and bringing the audience along with him - like, I’m guessing he thought that the further into that he leads the audience before we find ourselves saying “wait, what? 🤔” the better.
PS I posted this comment on another reaction to this song, so it’s not part of the discussion you were having about it, but I wanted to share the thought here anyway.
And definitely take everything as dark satire here. A lot of what bo does is sort of make you laugh and then make you feel called out for laughing. I feel like even his edgier older material like this does a good job and making the viewer examine themselves - and he constantly breaks trust with us. It’s very weird I feel like the audience is being dragged into the joke and mocked for trusting him.
You see it on the internet a lot. For example at the beginning of the pandemic there were so many memes on social media making fun of the situation. Every time there is some tragedy, memes are made.

Also, there’s a theory that evolutionarily, laughter is a signal that we don’t want to fight. So it makes sense to do it automatically in ambiguous situations.

As someone who was very self conscious about people saying I have red-ish hair when I was a kid, I love that this joke doesn't get a punch line 😂
I don't know why I was so self conscious though. People would say they wished they had my color hair all the time but I always thought they were just trying to be nice. It can be hard to take compliments as an insecure kid.

People who say that he’s all hunky dory are wrong. Inside is based off of very real feelings. He also doesn’t have a girlfriend anymore even.
I always laugh when I'm uncomfortable and that kinda sucks cause there's been times when a guy has been talking to me and I answer by nervously laughing but they don't get that so they think I'm having a good time even though I just didn't know how to react and was too scared to tell them to leave me alone. I use jokes sometimes to cope with my depression but not that often really.
I have no idea why the LGBTQ community (including myself) is totally chill with this guy saying these slurs lmao. I guess he's just uber charismatic lol
Well it's just jokes, would frankly be wierder if you did take offense. Imo everything should be okay to say or joke about as long as there's no ill will behind it.
I personally think I might feel different about it if those slurs had been used against me in a traumatizing way. I'm part of lgbtq+ but I've had it pretty easy. I feel like with Bo none of them have been actually used with ill intent and even though he jokes about gay themes etc it's not actually really mocking the people. And the times were different back then and he has grown a lot in that sense too. But it helps that Bo is really charismatic!

Having a wife/girlfriend aswell as a dog dosn't have to mean that you are a happy person. It's pretty much always a positive thing, but depresion is always there no matter how many fancy toys you have.

You should take it a bit seriously and while he does play a character, at a later point he does go through a huge panic attack issue on stage and stuff. Bo's own words as well. So, yeah. I'm glad he seems to be in a better headspace now because he's a phenomenal comedic artist.

It's interesting that the song moves between puns that have a punchline (the flyer for the lost dog) and just lines with no jokes (the kitten in the tree). I think any subject can potentially be a topic for humour if there is empathy, intelligence and you remember to actually put a joke in. However sometimes jokes are thrown in purely for their shock value which seems a cheap way of getting a laugh or reaction.
Random fact people probably might have known already: Bo is not actually his real name, more of a nickname that he has always been called. (his 'real' name is more for if he had become a doctor or something, his dad wanted to call him Bo)

Yeah, like many creatives... he HAS been making many of the same points for most of his career. I guess this is just how artists hone their own artistic articulation of what seems most important to/motivates them. He actually makes fun of himself later in the vid for always feeling the need to add some extra layer of deeper meaning to his jokes, for the need to seem deep. But.. I give him a pass because I think he really does have some important points to make. His movie Eighth Grade is great too, and is also all about anxiety, awkwardness, and questioning ones purpose in life. He got patternz lol. Even his book of poetry "says" many of the same things.

I dont know who the f told you Inside was nothing serious as it was... this is why i rage at most who react to bo/commentors.. the fact is, most if those people watched the nicely cropped versions of the songs in Inside, totally sheltered by the traumatizingly real segueways he did.. just in states of paranoia, self doubt, hate, dark awareness of time passing (turning 30)... reality is, ive watched Inside, fully, soon as it came out beginning to end. Abt 1/3 in, the discomfort i began feeling was unbearable. The only way a person could ever downplay Insides “core” are those who’ve either never watched it fully, transitions and all, or they actually dont have any form of mental health issue in order to notice the very miniscule, VERY MH RELATED, portions that only we could recognize. I say we, bc from what i’ve heard from both your commentaty and visual reactions i picked up on, i feel pretty confident you know exactly what i mean. Im glad you didnt blindly believe those people bc its more obvious now, to me, that you absolutely do empathise and can separate real struggle from “staged jokes”. No, Inside was as crude and uncomfortable as you felt it, throwing the “perfectly cut” portions out for media consumption butchering the entire show. Im leaving this msg literally pausing soon as i heard what you sais was told to you and part of your opinion saying you felt there was def a real nature to it even if some exaggerated. Im glad to hear you say that.. and to people claiming otherwise are the exact reason why Bo was never seen more than a clown. If after his “cant handle this”, 5 year long freakin hiatus, then coming out something as horrifying as “Inside” is being downplayed as staged. Boy, are people tone deaf and completely missing Bo’s whole point.
