      The Yu-Gi-Oh girl gave away the 2nd card before the MTG could say stinker or staple. Also Magical Mallet is underrated AF I use it in TCG OTS tournament play and it's when I know my cards can't affect my opponents board.

    14:07 Remove from play is actually the same as banish, just a different name from when they reworked card text iirc
    What I find helps when explaining Yugioh cards to MTG players is to use terminology they're familiar with, ex:
    Banish - Exile
    Quick Effect - Instant speed/Flash
    Piercing - Trample
    Might also help to explain some more key gameplay differences, such as Yugioh monsters having haste by default, or how their effects are sorcery speed unless specified to be a quick effect

      @MrMarnel Рік тому +61

      Yeah, also Tribute - Sacrifice and Negate - Counter, even though not quite the same get the point across. I also like to explain summons like land plays. You have one a turn, the normal summon, but card effects can both give you additional (Floow, Explore) or put lands into play without costing it (Special Summons, Rampant Growth).

      well i'd consider banish face down as Remove from play tbh because banishing face up doesnt nececarily strip the card of its effect Or in the case of stuff that RETURNS specific card types from the banish pile (think for example D.D.R) It cannot target Face down banished cards... because for all intents and purposes them being face down makes them "typeless"

      Mayakashi would require knowing that Mayakashi aren't that good. The rest are pretty much "is this a good effect with a good condition or not?" and just require a bit of inference about the meta. Like, everyone who played Yugioh knew that Snow was absolutely busted on release (disruption, barely a cost, and not OPT) and that Witch's Strike requires your opponent to do something specific (which is always bad). Magical Mallet is building your deck around your deck being bad.

    • @MrZer093
      @MrZer093 Рік тому +11

      While you are right about Snow, the player base was absolutely divided about Strike and Mallet upon reveal. Mallet was quickly figured out by most as being bad for the reason you said (namely it’s only good if you have a lot of cards you don’t want to draw and at that point, you should build your deck better) but it took a while for Strike because well, negates were and are still rather common and that is a helluva payoff it has there. But the most potent negates get used on the first turn and this wouldn’t be live at that point and thus that slot is better used for a card that can continue your combos over hoping your opponent wrecks yours

    To add another point about why Fairy Tail Snow is so good that wasn't really elaborated on: On top of the facts you already mentioned, where it can be used as many times per turn as you are able, at quick effect speed, and in response to effects that would disrupt it, it's flip-face-down effect is also incredibly potent for disrupting plays. It probably goes without saying but it's important to remember: its flip-face-down effect also triggers when it's summoned by its own summoning condition, not just from a Normal Summon or from another card's effect. Say your opponent activates Emergency Teleport with hopes of summoning a monster from the deck, you chain Snow's GY effect to summon it and then after that chain resolves, a new chain starts and Snow's field effect triggers, flipping their summoned monster face-down, so now it can't be used for any more combos or plays that need it to be face-up. This includes almost all Extra Deck summoning, and any effect that requires a face-up monster with specific stats. Snow is incredibly powerful in a deck that loves loading up the GY, like Tearlament.

    Witch's Strike always gets everyone the first time. It can take lots of text or multiple minutes to explain exactly why the card isn't great, but I think the easiest way is to imagine the scenario in which the card is useful (you have it set on the field since at least the previous turn, you attempt to do something and your opponent negates it) which is already not the simplest thing in the world and then add a bunch of stipulations like the fact that it has to negate an activation, many commonly played cards don't turn it on, some decks hardly ever care about it etc. It also could be said that it'd be an entirely different story if the card was Quick-play and not a Trap.
    Spell speeds in Yugioh are kinda like the old Interrupt rules in Magic, although it's unlikely lots of people played with those, and the game didn't use the "Stack" for resolving multiple spells and abilities back then but a batch system. It's best not getting into that for hose videos probably, but analogies do exist.

    "Quick effect is faster than this trap card" that is incorrect. Spell speed wise they are the same the trap card is just more situational and has an activation requirement. Another small nitpick is she said banish and remove from play are different in yugioh which is also not correct. Every old card that says "remove from play" means banish.
    As a general rule here is the spell speed list:
    Spell speed 1: Normal spells, field spells, continuous spells, and monster effects.
    Spell speed 2: Trap and trap effects (normal and continuous), quick play spells, and quick effect monster effects.
    Spell Speed 3: Counter traps.

    this is a good series, and I do like seeing how different players view different cards from a game they're not familiar with. One bit critique is the same as many pointed out: if the host had knowledge of how both games work, it would make it much better I think. It would allow the host to explain how a card words a lot more clearly than if they didn't. An example, would be when she just stated how tribute is equivalent to sacrifice, however, when it came to banishing, it felt like even she didn't entirely know what it meant. I say this as Removed From Play, and Banish, are the same thing, there is not a banish zone, or a removed from play zone, and if she just said that banish is equivalent to exile, it would have been a lot clearer. Another example is when she was trying to explain what a Quick Effect is, she could have just stated that a quick effect is the equivalent of an instant/Flash/Activated Ability, and as such, usable anytime you would have priority. Aside from that, I think it was a good episode.

    I feel like with Witch's Strike, an absolutely huge thing that was overlooked was how it says "negates the activation" rather than "negates the effect". If it was negate the effect it would arguably be a lot stronger as many many more staples (ash) negate effects rather than activations. Also, the spell speed really isn't a problem like others in the comment are saying. If someone uses a Solemn judgment as a counter trap (spell speed 3), witches strike simply starts a new chain as CL1.

    Dakki and Benten were definitely unfair.
    Dakki is a staple in Mayakashi because the deck is focused around summoning her over and over to summon synchro monsters with a higher level (from 3 at the lowest up to 11).
    Benten is restricted by being a ritual monster, a summoning mechanic that used to be very flawed.
    Both cards are good in their respective decks. The main difference is that Benten can be used by other ritual-decks and light & fairy just happens to have the most support. Dakki can only be used for its intended purpose unless you tribute it to special summon Nine-tailed Fox or do whatever.
    Anyway…Magical Mallet is only useful for getting your Garnets (cards that are mostly or even only useful when they stay in the deck until you draw the coresponding card) back into the deck.

    Wait, correct me if im wrong, but: witchs strike does have the same spell speed as quick effects. There are 3 spell speeds: spell speed 1 can only be at the start of a chain, pot of greed or breaker, the magical warrior are examples. Spell speed 2 are cards that you can use in any part of a chain, they can react to something or you can use them in your opponents turn (there are exeptions). Traps cards always have spell speed 2 or higher (there are probably exeptions, but i dont remember one) but monsters, continous spells and quick spell can also have spell speed 2. Examples are twin twisters, Borrelload Savage Dragons negation effect and, you guessed it: witchs strike and fairy tail snow. Spell speed 3 are counter traps. They always react to something and u cannot activate other cards in response to them, exept for counter traps.
    On another note: there is no such thing as a difference in "removed from play" and "banished". In the earlier days, the card text said "removed from play", because they were thought of as they were never coming back. As they printed more cards that refered to those cards while they were already removed from play and card texts kept getting longer, they called it "banished".
    Btw I love the format, pls keep it going gals n guys :)

    I've played both for many years. Pretty much since the start of Magic. I mostly like playing control. Mainly for alternate win states. For me, that always seems to be more easily done with Yu-Gi-Oh. I wanted to bring this up because of the discussion of banishment in the video. While there are cards that let you banish stuff in Magic. There are very few, I can only think of maybe 2 off the top of my head that allow you to bring stuff back. And if I remember correctly, it's specific things. But in YGO, you can build a turn 1 infinite combo deck around banishment. I just really enjoy that, lol.
    I've also built a deck in magic that is turn 1 with no lands. As in no land cards at all. I built it to be a counter to Flash Hulk. I was actually surprised with how smoothly it ran. I just really like building decks, and seeing combos pop off.

    Also to add on with Snow is she can also be used as disruption, since most ED summon besides fusions requires your materials to be face up so if you hit the right card you can stop a combo.
    Also since Snow can banish any 7 card most the time you can just banish spell traps that's been used since those are harder to recycle than monsters. So 7 sounds quite costly but since you can use your GY that's a lot of benefits and not all decks recycle their gy this lets snow acts as both a potential disruption and extender.
