I was there, being blown away! What a drum magician!
this sounds like " the Spanish Moss Suite"
"Storm" & "Flash Flood"!!!
Didn't know this was captured on film!!!
absolutely. Cobham back in the 70's was unbelievable to watch and listen to. I've seen many different bands that cobham put together in the 70's. I remember seeing this particular lineup several times.
Great band. It's a shame about Micheal Brecker.
NO smooth jazz, no hip hop/rap, no auto tune, no sequenced drum machine, just real honest players playing their asses off. Sometimes i thinkt he drums are just going to explode.... Insane stuff.
If not THE best hands and feel in the art, then it must be impossible to rank one master against another. Wow, what a fuhREAK! I still listen to David Garibaldi to this day, but Bobham was the prime influence on my playing then. I wore the vinyl down - slowing it to 78rpm's and trying to comprehend this man's explosion of feeling.
Awesome...the good old days with Billy & the Brecker Brothers...we miss Mike always!

John Abercrombie RIP. This is the 1st thing I want to hear...
INDEED! I can't believe he's gone!
Very Nice! Grew up listening to the shabazz lp in High School. Very nice upload. thank you.
This is THE SHIT! Oh the good ole days!
Amazing Brecker! .and interesting technics at that time playing trumpet through synthesizer like BILL CHASE!!!!
What a tune, remember me the golden age of jazzrock....
Well, I just won't put someone at "Legendary" status unless I feel they have earned it. I feel Billy earned his Legendary Status early in his career. Mahavishnu earned Legendary status by being groundbreaking and creating his own unique form of drumming that practically every major drummer has studied from. Guys like Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith, Simon Phillips, John Blackwell, etc., etc., etc., have all studied Billy and he is among the greatest drummers in the world.
Holy shit what a band.
I want that jersey.
BTW this cut is not Shabazz- It's Spanish Moss- A Sound Portrait : Storm...
It's from the Crosswinds album-great post,thanks!
I just like putting those at Legendary status that have earned it. Billy earned that status in his 20's and early 30's, not just by what he did with Mahavishnu, his own solo albums like Spectrum, Crosswinds, Total Eclipse are all classic jazz/fusion albums that every drummer should be studying. How about Fly with the Wind with McCoy Tyner? Another classic. Not many drummers have a discography of classic albums like Billy. He is a living legend and deserves that recognition.
Oh, if you make one, send Billy a check for royalties... It's the fair thing to do. I wish Cobham sold cool t-shirts on his site.
Epic - ; w/ Brecker Bros. Milcho Leviev, Abercrombie playing a white SG, all them cats wearing yellow 'Hindu/Mid Eastern style' shirts - Post Lysergic early ' 70s Fusion.
You can always custom make your own.
The new Mahavishnu Orchestra played the same festival 3 days later - wonder if either of them saw the other?
Suggestion, when you listen to the early music like Mahavishnu, take some private time with no one around, listen to the entire album from start to finish without interuptions and listen see if you can do selective listening to each player by them selves or in various groupings. Mahavishnu, IMO, takes at least 1,000 plays per album to really digest it properly. Also, get the songbook, it helps people understand some of the concepts behind McLaughlin's songwriting as he experiments A LOT.
Well, I don't think it is appropriate to say one is a Legend or better than already established legends when one drummer hasn't reached that status in all circles, which is what some are doing. I think vinnie is a great drummer, but based on his discography of long list of credits, I think he has reached Legendary status like some of you are obsessing about.
@ignatzmouses I also came to hear Mike Brecker, but that was harsh. Check out some Frank Gambale and get back to me if you still think guitar is stupid.
Which specific statement/opinion are you not in agreement?
juanbarros88, In order to establish a framework of understanding, one must have a background that has been researched. I don't know how much time you have spent in your 21 years about the origins of fusion music and the different offshoots. I don't know what your catalog of CDs/albums is that you have really studied. Listening to a Mahavishnu, RTF album once or twice doesn't cut it. On has to spend years listening to fusion to fully understand it.
This is John Ambercrombie who came along long before mike B.I prefer John Ambercrombie actually...
