    Howdy doody, frienderoonies! Today we're here to talk all about pitch shifting, and a few sound design tips and ideas when it comes to pitch shifters. In this video, we'll be using Devious Machines Pitch Monster, as it gives you access to some less common parameters in pitch shifting tools that make it significantly more powerful (and useful) as a sound design tool.
    Pitch shifting goes beyond just putting your loops in key - it can be a unique distortion, a texture generator, a weird granular effect, and a whole lot more!

    So glad you made this. I picked this up a few weeks ago and needed some ideas on how to use it more. I’ve used it on vocals for some thickening and to correct pitch on a sample so far but thats it. I tried using it on a bass line but i couldn’t get it to do what i thought it would. The sample was pretty sub and distorted so not surprising. Lol

    • @VenusTheory

      That's done in Bitwig actually! Bitwig allows you to add LFOs and a lot more to just about anything. As long as you can MIDI learn it, you can modulate it with all sorts of stuff!

    I would definitely download the demo first and try it. After buying this I feel it was def. overpriced compared to actual usability. It feels kind of clunky and the "filter section" is just so bad. Like Venus said if you want that broken sound its great but finding a way to ad actual harmonies to synth pads is not as easy as it looks, it gets very muddy very fast. I get more way use out of Unfiltered Audio's - Spec Ops for true formant shifting.

    • @glyph6757
      @glyph6757 4 місяці тому

      SpecOps is amazing, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a look, for those who haven't seen it in acton. It's got a lot more glitching potential than PitchMonster, in my opinion, and I hope Cameron covers it on his channel one day.

    FL studio recently added a frequency shifter, do you know what the difference between a pitch shifter and a frequency shifter are?

    • @BOKKENMMB
      @BOKKENMMB 2 роки тому +3

      ONE DOES IT BY NOTE/SEMITONES LIKE FROM C > F# AND THAT'S PITCH SHIFTER, THE OTHER JUST GOES BY FREQUENCIES WHICH IS INHARMONIC, AND CAN BE SHIFTED OFF NOTES OR CREATE AMAZING SOUND DESIGN STUFF.

    • @joechapman8208
      @joechapman8208 2 роки тому +2

      A pitch shifter moves all frequencies in a conventially musical way, i.e. it preserves the harmonic relationships. You can shift a sampled chord up and down the octaves, and it might sound a little weird on the big jumps but it's still the same chord. A frequency shifter adds [x]Hz to every frequency going through it, which results in very unconventional results that don't preserve harmonic relationships, and the bigger the jumps the weirder it's going to get. If you used a frequency shifter and a pitch shifter on a single sine tone, there wouldn't be a particular difference between them in terms of the main note coming out the other side, say if you went from A2 at 110Hz up to A3 at 220Hz (aside from superficial differences in the maths of the processors), but if you shifted a more harmonically complex note or multiple notes at once then the difference would be pretty huge.
      Frequency shifters are sometimes better than pitch shifters for pitch adjustment of sounds which don't have a particularly discernable pitch: certain snares and crash cymbals, for example. They're also good for deliberate abuse, to get metallic or otherworldly effects. Sometimes pitch shifters aren't so good because they're trying to preserve elements that aren't always needed. [edit] By the way, if you find yourself enjoying the FL one and want something more, I'd recommend picking up PSP's Hertz Rider 2 if you see it on sale: two shifters, various modulators built-in.

    • @joechapman8208
      @joechapman8208 2 роки тому

      To explain better, say I play a C Major chord in the Octave 1: that's C, E, G or 32.70Hz, 41.20Hz and 49Hz. If I use a pitch shifter to raise the root note by an octave, the new chord is still C, E, and G in Octave 2, or 65.40Hz, 82.4Hz and 98Hz - everything has "doubled". But if I used a frequency shifter instead to raise the root note of the chord by an octave, the C could be correctly shifted to 65.40Hz by adding 32.70Hz but when it adds that 32.70Hz to the other notes it break the chord, giving us a chord of 65.40Hz (C2), 73.90Hz (a too-sharp D2) and 81.70Hz (a flat E2).
      That's just for the root frequency of each note, so if you imagine that happening to every partial of each note, things get a bit wild.

    • @joechapman8208
      @joechapman8208 2 роки тому

      @@BOKKENMMB That's not it. You can change a pitch shifter by fractions of semi-tones too.

    • @BOKKENMMB
      @BOKKENMMB 2 роки тому

      @@joechapman8208 OF COURSE YOU CAN DO IT IF THE VST ALLOWS IT. BUT THE GENERAL IDEA STAYS ;) ONE CHANGES SEMITONES, ONE CHANGES FREQUENCIES ;)

    How did you tied an LFO to the Formant shift?.

    • @VenusTheory
      @VenusTheory  2 роки тому +1

      Yo! This is a feature of Bitwig actually - Bitwig has 'modulators' that can be tied to any destination in a plugin that accepts automation. I've actually got a video showing a bit about that here: ua-cam.com/video/pQEnO0AagDw/v-deo.html
