I personally own a 6.4 and I have found that nearly all of the problems were solved by a simple dpf delete and a lift pump and btw I love the truck they sound great are fast and look terrific and the only problem I have had was an exhaust back pressure sensor
@@doug3805one thing I’ve learned about ford is the problems to fix result in it being what you’d wanna do to any motor to make more power anyways so I’m not exactly against it😂
F450 king ranch 6.4 bought new, cab off 6 times before 90k miles. Broken rocker arms, leaking seals, blown head gaskets, ford gave me a 200k engine warrant to make me feel warm and fuzzy..... employee totaled it, I gave him a raise.
At the time, driving on I10 with my kids in the truck… I believe every time the dealership did a repair it was made by mechanic that hated his job and repairs were not made properly…. Just an opinion based on all my issues I had.
I have owned a 6.4 for 10 years. Pulled a 42' fifth all over the United States, 2 fold. 260,000 miles and deleted. Will still smoke the tires down, and has never left me stranded on the side of the road. Best truck I have ever owned. If you own a diesel, you need to be putting Lucas injection cleaner in every other fill up. Half the people that bitch about these trucks never owned one or don't know how to take care of them.
they fast as hell ourra the factory they were impressive. my friend has one deleted and its got a ton of mieles. he pulls big 5th wheel campers for people truck pulls like a beast.
Love my 6.4. Mine is tuned and deleted with an intake. I just run a tow tune and I don't race my truck. I watch my temps and I use Archoil and Hotshots on my fill ups. Runs so clean it hardly throws a puff of smoke when I get on it and it makes a ton of power. I pull 12k compactors all over Colorado with no struggles.
Had my 6.4 for a year now. Absolutely love it, zero problems. Running fuel additive, and high quality oil. Not used as a race car, but a good towing unit.
Have a 09 6.4 with over 250k miles on it with zero trouble and that is with it being 100% stock, non deleted. My thoughts, these engines can be a reliable option, if you are diligent on the maintenance. I had the advantage of knowing the maintenance on my truck, oil changed every 5k with Rotella t-4 15/40 in summer 10/30 in winter, make sure to drain the fuel/water separator w/ea. oil change and change fuel filters 2x per year. Make sure to always use Ford/Motorcraft parts and filters. Treat them well and they will usually treat you well. Every person I know that has a issue with a 6.4 either had added a tuner and/or did a poor job with maintenance, or they cant verify previous owners maintenance. BTW, they made the 6.4 for 3 years, not 2. 2008, 09, 10.
You're stupid-lucky that you've had no problems. I have an '08 with 250k on the clock, it IS DPF deleted, and I've already had all the injectors and recently the EGR coolers replaced. Love the truck, but you're not getting to 250k without AT LEAST new EGR coolers in most cases.
In my opinion, the people who hate on the 6.4's the most are the ones who haven't owned one and haven't driven one. Of course all these are really issues, but they can be almost completely resolved with a dpf and egr delete. I have one that I bought at 150k and it currently has 200k, and has been deleted and running a spartan tuner. Most times it stays with just a 150hp tune and it will handle a 250 perfectly fine as long as I don't bang it off the limiter constantly. So basically, a tuned 6.4 is a perfectly fine motor, and tuning one is definitely cheaper than doing a engine swap to something like a 12v with wayyyyyy less performance capabilities without heavy modifications
The 6.4 used the same rocker assembly as the 6.0 but didn’t have the oil splashing hui injectors lubing the rocker assembly’s…..they have non machinable rods so bushings are a specialist deal…the injector pump cannot be removed with out lifting the cab…cracked pistons from the higher compression engine (you can buy pistons from international that solve this….the fuel lines are single use so if they come of they need replacement…..that really good looking front end didn’t brace the radiator enough so they crack radiators…every engine related component on the truck is double $$ compared to the 6.0 but…..it’s still the most powerful tune only engine even when compared to the newer 6.7 powerstrokes….I wanted one sooooo bad but couldn’t justify the hassle…my 03 6.0 runs well enough…and it’s all done up so should be good for a while
the 6.0 Powerstroke has the highest compression ratio of all the diesels of past 20 years 18:1 the 6.4 went down to 17.5:1 and almost all common rail diesels sit around 16 - 16.5 : 1 hence their crap fuel economy..... im convinced the 6.0 is one of the best engines ever made in terms of upgradability reparability and longevity almost everything thats wrong with a 6.0 is fixed by replacing a bolt on part on top of the engine....... with an aftermarket solution and you wont be revisiting it anytime soon.
@@justnsaliga8518 my only regret is not pulling the motor out to swap lifters when I did the work on it…I’m deleted, studded, and tuned by gear heads,I just got back from a 6 hour trip and netted 13 mpg on winter blend pulling 9k over a pass……stock size tires is a must if your pulling anything because with stock tires I can set the cruise to 70mph and pull most hills with out it shifting out of overdrive even with 9k behind me….I really wanted to run 285s but glad I didn’t seeing how well she pulls…wouldn’t change a thing
No kidding man. It gets a shitty reputation but it isn't all bad when something broke it was something a average dude with a weekend and a wrench could fix. My only regret with my 6.0 is not getting a higher trim package, work-trucking it till she dies, lmfao.
In our Fire Department we had 3 Rescues/Ambulances that had the 6.4L that the department bought brand new and they spent most of their lives in the shop. They had issue after issue. These types of trucks are ran hard and put away wet. It’s the nature of the business and the 6.4 did not handle it well at all. Those trucks are now long gone and have since been replaced with Cummins trucks that although don’t have the get up and go like the 6.4, have had little to no trouble and it looks like the other 16 Rescues will be changed to Cummins when the time comes. (The other trucks run Detroit Diesel engines which have also had little trouble)
Another reason that Chevy makes better trucks. At our local firehouse has a 6.4 and it only has 24000 miles on it but to be fair is a lot for a ford. It makes a visit to the repair shop every few months.
The odd thing is, the 6.4 fell into the Federal Purchase year of 2008. So all the Border Protection, Forestry service, all Federal agencies and branches of the military who required and used diesels were issued Ford Superduty 6.4s. The 27th Fighter wing I was assigned to had anywhere from 150 to 230 pieces of equipment that were Ford 6.4 diesels or a configuration of from 2008 to present day. I deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq and a majority of them and other equipment came with us. I think you suffered from from bad mechanics not bad 6.4s. One of my current 6.4s was a border protection truck that I bought from them only retired because they found the raptors with the suspension they have was a better truck for their terrain. Didn't mean the 6.4s didn't protect that terrain for a decade though. Properly serviced and repaired correctly they put up with far more abuse than a fire department can give them. Seen it first hand 7 tours.
Had a 6.4 once. After spending thousands on it to keep having issues I bought a 2017 Ford 6.7, and never looked back. Wished I could have kept the 6.4 to motor swap it because the body/interior were in great shape.
I’ve got an 2008 Lariat 4 door 4x4 F-450 and am shocked to hear that they “are not good engines”. Mine is a beast I love My Truck Did I just get a good reliable powerful engine or are people dogging out these trucks and no matter what engine they have isn’t going to keep up with that amount of abuse? I don’t get it I had a F-350 6.0L before that and it stayed parked the majority of the time because I couldn’t keep coming out of pocket every time it broke down and pretty much gave it away. GOD BLESS YOU ALL
I too, as many others on this posting, have a 2008 6.4 XL Crew Cab LB. I have to say that after watching videos like this one, I get worried that I may be a victim of one of these destructive motors one day. I purchased this truck with 119,000 miles on it and it now has 170,000 miles of light towing and daily driving. I had the steering box and rear main seal replaced just after buying it and haven't had any more issues there. I change the oil and fuel filers every 7,000 mile (All Motorcraft Filters) because I use Mobile 1 Full Synthetic. Over the past year, I have been running Archoil products in the fuel and oil (Archoil AR6400-D Diesel Fuel System Cleaner every 2,000 Miles, AR6500 Diesel Treatment Every Fill-Up, & AR9100 Friction Modifier in the Oil every oil change). The engine has been deleted and tuned using SCT X4 Tuning. It has a lot of power and I haven't had any engine problems as of yet. The only real issue I had was with the brakes and vibration in the bed at certain speeds because of the long bed (common issue I found in my research). I had both front calipers seize up on me and heated the rotors and bearing up so bad that I had to replace the whole hub assembly, and of course the calibers and brake pads. I love this truck and it hasn't ever left me stranded anywhere, but I worry every time I haul something. I've thought of replacing the major failure items with aftermarket Mishimoto and Sinister Diesel Products for piece of mind and extra power. It comes down to making the hard decision: 1. Get rid of the truck while it still runs and buy a 6.7 or the new Duramax 3L 6 Cyl 2. Run it till it dies and sell for parts 3. Invest in upgrading it and hope that it gives me many more years of service.
I’ve had my 6.4 for 7 years now soon as I bought it got a ton of white smoke , immediately deleted both dpf & egr straight piped it mini max tuned it , don’t rough it up do my maintenance pull commercial AC & my boat and have never had any major issues since , 🤞
I’ve owned and worked every series of power stroke from 1999 and up. I’ve had the most issues with a 6.7 and the least with the 6.4. I only bought 2010 year on the 6.4 and the only problem I had from it was contaminated fuel plugged injectors so I went bigger than the workstock eligible factory turbos could handle, s369 and I pulled over 30,000lbs of construction equipment while getting 20 mpg and 30+ without the trailer. I keep good maintenance and steered clear of the early years and the treated me well especially for an 800 horse work/play/daily driven truck
@@lockgessner 800 horse pushing a truck weighing 8200 lbs with me in it. 6.4 are a very efficient engine when not tuned for smoke challenges and especially when it runs 11-1200 rpm to go 70 mph and it has better flowing turbo setup. My hottest tune got me the best fuel mileage 7-800 miles per tank when empty, not driving though mountains, and not playing. The 06 Cummins we had got close on fuel mileage but only at 55-60 mph because of the axle gears matched to the g56 for most efficient driving. I’ve done work on my dads coworkers who are camper haulers and learned the most crucial things to them are fuel mileage and reliability so that’s how I approach every build I do because the nice thing about newer truck is no matter what you do you can make power by going after efficiency
@@lockgessner the biggest problem I had when going after the high mpg numbers on my 6.4 was my transmission bucking because of needing a tuning adjustment for those low rpm’s but I also had a 6 month wait to get the first torque converter that saw the street from that manufacturer and I recommend it to everyone with a 5r110 just make sure you have a good tuning guy because it’s very aggressive when it needs to be but real smooth when it’s low rpm and it took a bit for the tuning to get where I liked driving it at low rpm’s
Also have to think that the 6.4 is a very rare sight nowadays. They’re not common at all. Where there’s millions of 6.7, 6.0, and 7.3 trucks, there’s only a couple hundred thousand 6.4s.
i had a 6.4 for 4 years making 750+hp on a 250 shot making hits every single day and racing almost every weekend, only things that ever broke were accessory shit like ac compressor or alternator.. 250k miles on it when i bought it, sold it to get something smaller and regret it every single day
Had the same issue. Also had to replace turbos. Other then that super reliable. We have owned 6 6.4 now and deleted with new radiators they have had no issues. Our oldest one now has 280k and only had to replace an alternator
I think the 6.4 is one of the best engines. my cousin has one with 300k on it and its been a great truck. I don't see why they get so much hate. the people that hate on them are the ones that run a 300 hp tune and complain when they break
Statistically, they're throw away engines. Yes, some are good, and have no issues. Over all, they're pretty crappy. I personally still like them, and think they're awesome... if it runs, but that's a huge if. Lol
Or like my dad, that just literally drove it around stock and it spun every bearing in the motor. Then it threw a rod out the side of the motor with less than 30k miles. Biggest pile.
If you guys do a 6.4L cummins swap build, you should take a 6.4L F-450 pickup and swap in a 6.7L cummins engine and an allison transmission. I know it's been done but I've never seen it done on UA-cam.
It’s the least problematic engine I’ve had out of every power stroke I’ve had. I had a rotation of turbo rebuilds for it but bigger injectors caused that until I put an s369 on it and got away from workstock class
I say it all the time. Owned every series of power stroke from 1999 through 2019 and the biggest pos I’ve owned was a 2011 least problems I’ve had was 2010 followed by 2006. My trucks haul construction equipment, farm equipment including hay and other consumables and do truck pulls
Not really. Even when I went to school to be a diesel mechanic, all 4 of my teachers (which also worked as private mechanics) absolutely dreaded seeing a f250 or f350 showing up in their yard. Its a great engine for anyone wanting a steady repeat customer for sure, Otherwise it's the same cycle of breakage. Eventually you get to a point where you're sourcing parts from old bus engines just to keep the things going. My personal opinion is it was stupid for Ford to look towards Renault to even build the engines. Euro engines almost never go well under American use.
@@sammymontego2217 I do service for a lot of camper haulers that come in with a 6.4 for yearly dot inspections and the typical maintenance I’ve also seen people who have problems I’ve noticed build date has a lot to do with reliability on them I’ve had very good luck with mine
215k on my 08 250 and the only issues I've had are typical maintenance stuff at 200k. Water separator, calipers, ball joints, u joints, hubs, craziest thing I had was a brake line blow out due to rubbing.
For what I have seen and experienced the emission system malfunction issues are the real killer of the 6.4L. I think a regular maintenance the EGR and a DPF cleaning would go along way to keeping these engines alive. Removing the use of over fueling cylinder 7 & 8 for the burn off cycle and switching to system like the Duramax uses would be a big improvement if that could be done. The engine it self looks to be structurally very strong. All of the past and current light and medium duty diesel engines have their own problems you just need maintain the engines and not abuse them. Boosting the horsepower of any engine generally shortens the engine life. It does the same for any gas or diesel engine.
Ok the 6.4 is only good when it's egr deleted, I have heard of that issue with the fuel pump but never experienced it because I bought one as a work truck a while back.
I had 2 6.4s a Red 2010 King ranch Crew Cab and a White 2008 XLT Single Cab the king ranch was a good one it had 171K when I sold it for my 04 LLY and I still have the 08 XL it’s my beater it has 231K mikes and I beat the absolute shit out of it and it still starts up so I think it’s a decent engine but I wasn’t very impressed with the 6.0 lol
You better be careful man, you going to stir up all the UA-cam “mechanics”, tHe 6.4 Is JuNk! Always makes me laugh because you know hardly any of them have even had one.
@@christianrickard4082 I am a mechanic, a car mechanic and Diesel Mechanic it just depends what kind you have I’ve worked on 6.4s and 6.0s that had yellow oil and all kinds of stuff but it was just the ones I had lol I still got the white XL
I'm more impressed with my 6.4 than everyone I know in real life with 6.0's who have nothing but never ending issues. Im just about to hit 90k and everything is smooth as long as you delete emissions and take care of regular maintenance.
I love when people talk about high pressure fuel pumps like this one and the cp4 and then say they suck because if you put bad diesel through it they go to crap, like broh, any pump you run crap through is gonna be toasted after a bit, just keep on top of filter changes and your Golden, no issue
as far as i know the problems with the 6.0s problems were mostly bolt on repair on the top of the engine but the 6.4s problems were almost all internal. making it a bigger headache and wallet breaker.
I have a 6.4. I did the ARP head studs a DPF delete and an EGR delete and it pretty much out tows anything I've ever had. I worry about the pistons but I'm looking for a solid core to do a full rebuild on at which time I'll upgrade the pistons, rods and anything else I can afford at the time. I love the truck though and just got back from a 10 day camping trip to Colorado where I pulled down the I70 East pushing against a severe headwind "heading home" and was still able to run 74mph without heating up. I'm adding a SCT tuner and EGT probe today for a little piece of mind.
My family enjoys them. Even knowing their problems. But man they pull. We currently own 6. My dad has two. Brother has one and I have one. And I have two uncles who each owns one. My dads first 6.4 has been through hell. A ton of burnouts and snowplowing truck along with pulling heavier trailers and she still runs up to this day. She isn’t fast anymore but still has power.
Just bought a 2008 F350 CC LB 6.4 with 99k. It was my uncles since new and ever since I was a little kid I’ve always loved his truck and loved riding in it on vacation when I’d see him lol. it’s completely stock besides new injectors(idk when exactly but it was a few years ago). All he used it for was to tow his pontoon and a couple loads every once in a while. Garage kept, oil changed religiously, waxed twice a year, and “driven 5 times a year”, the thing is in beautiful condition. Planning on a DPF and EGR delete to get her breathing right, then a fass or AirDog. It’s my daily driver and stock Egr dpf it gets about 13.5 average😭hopefully after the delete those numbers get higher. Had a code for the turbo we thought was cause the veins in the turbo were stuck cause he never drove it. Put the pedal to the floor and it went away. Super lucky to be 18 with such a beautiful truck with lots of meaning to me.
The scr systems were another known weak point. During a regen cycle the computer would inject more fuel ONLY into cylinders 7 and 8, subsequently blowing the head gasket on those two cylinders.
It would also push fuel past those cylinders and into your oil pan, effectively washing out the bearings in the rotating assembly 😊 Ford knew this and even suggested to filling the crank case with less than the intended amount of oil to make up for the difference in the amout of fuel that would be dumped into the pan from the regen cycles.
6.4’s didn’t have an scr just a dpf, scr’s didn’t come about until the 6.7. You are right about the extra fuel dumped into 7 and 8, but it was to burn the soot out of the dpf.
The 6.4 is so bad that I went through 3 cores just trying to find a usable block. Melted pistons, broken crankshafts. We just got another one today that's seized solid! EPA killed this engine
If you fully delete, put a good fuel system and replace the Ford pistons with international ones it won’t be a bad truck and you can get them for cheap
I own a 6.4L Ford F-250 Super Duty Lariat. It has 250,565 mile on it right now. I bought it 200 miles ago. I will drive it until engine problems and then put a 24V Cummins in it.
I traded off my 2008 6.4 because I couldn't keep a radiator in it (went thru 3). It was then sold to a construction company who is still running the wheels off it today. 15 years on that bad, bad, worthless 6.4..............
@@StephenBrewer89 after taking it apart the rocker arms thickness was like a thin sheet of cardboard and are barely held on to the assembly no wonder one of them snapped off.
Had a 2010 f350 Harley Davidson cracked a piston at just over 100k miles fully deleted using h & s tuning. Rebuilt for 30k cad with Mahle piston oringed heads, arp studs and blew a head gasket 5k miles later.. lol traded that thing in and luckily got 40k for it. Figured there was a problem that was overboosing the truck but I was done with the pos
@@CarterLayne weird, got a 2000 7.3 with 334k and still going strong on the original engine, oh and an 02 7.3 also original engine with over 170k, must be a fluke. If I was to guess you’ve probably never even owned a powerstroke, you’re one of the famous “youtube mechanics”.
@@christianrickard4082 6.4s are a 150k throw away engine there's about a 50/50 chance and that's generous they run themselves into the ground after that
The 6.4L powerstroke is a beast unbeatable awesome motor.. that being said you much rebuilt the motor with ceramic coated pistons and do all the deletes.. ones it's one the road change your oil and fuel filters all the time with ford oem filters and a fuel additive like arch oil.. and man o man your 6.4L will last 300,000miles while pumping out unbelievable power
The one thing I would do to a 6.4 ,,the one thing ,I would putt 6.7 power stroke pistons in it ,but it’s not really necessary so just do deletes and get a tuner and you’ll be good for EVER
I have an 03 6.0 with 325 on the clock and it still has plenty go in her. Regular maintenance and 2 injectors is all she's ever needed. Regularly tows a 40' trailer with out much issues, just get good boost boots. Blowing one of those at highway speeds will make you pucker up real quick 😆
On Saturday I'm going to be looking at buying a 2008 crew cab f350 XL with a 6.4 l. 132,000 miles for 13500. Navistar made the 6.9 l and the 7.3 l powerstrokes and they were great engines. I don't intend to bump up the horsepower from what it is now as stock. And I don't have a lead foot so it should last a long time it is going to be my ranch truck anyway. Occasionally pulling a gooseneck trailer here and there
Delete it. DPF. And the EGR use a light tuner and reroute the blowby. Using 1" id tubing I don't suggest venting I made up a cache can that then vented to atmospher. It gets emptied every 5000mile service. Make sure there is no kinks in the tubing and the tubing runs down hill.
EVERY CLIP of the Truck is doing a burnout and doughnuts then cuts away a torn down engine? Just curious if the 6.4 owners that’s had no issues in over 200k miles drive like any of the cut away shots in the video?
Yes , I think you guys should cummins swap a 6.4. I love the 08-10 super duty body style. and i will probably end up doing a cummins swapped 6.4 in the near future.
I’ll be honest I have nothing good to say about Cummins engines, outside the 12 valve they are just heavier and less powerful than the power strokes without any real benefits
I have an 09 6.4 piece of junk, just put 13k on it and still wants more. Have a 07 Cummins, is a beast! I like the 09 body and interior though. Is it truly possible to put a cummins on the Ford?
I love my 6.4. I bought it in 2009 for 40,000 cash with 20,000 miles and now it has 193,000. It’s been fully deleted and studded. I blew the head gaskets being stupid one day and it also cost me a piston. Other than that the low pressure fuel pump went out and I put a lift pump on. The only other problem I have had is the radiator. I have put 4 or 5 on it with the lifetime mishimoto warranty. I have put brakes on it twice and shocks on it once. Other than that everything is stock from the factory so I can’t complain. It’s been a damn good truck and trucks will continue to be as long as you take care of them and don’t dog them out.
Unfortunately Navistar rushed and sloppily slapped it together causing a ton of issues. Ford shortly there after cut ties with navistar and made the 6.7 in house in 2011 which is still being used today and is probably the most reliable powerstroke to date besides the 7.3
same here i have my 6.4 ad absolutely love it. The 6.4s are tricky though, either you get one that lasts a million years or blows at 100k. At work we had 3, 1 blew at 150k the other blew at 210. then the one that had the egr delete is at 270k and has had zero issues. My truck is completely deleted with a crankcase breather and a single turbo kit. one of the most impressive things about the 6.4 is hen you get a good one it is incredible how much power you can really get out of the motors!
Yep. My dad owns a 2014 International Terrastar with a max force in it ( not sure what number someone can correct me). It’s had problems but it hasn’t been terrible for the 5 years we’ve had it
@@TheyCallMeNoobieButItsNewBa I’ve also heard that the Maxxforce 7 engine is a complete maintenance nightmare if something breaks. The truck you specified (2014 International Terrastar) would have had the same Maxxforce 7 in it.
Rumors from reliable sources has said one of the reasons they got rid of the 7 .3 was because they weren't making the money on maintenance and sales because the 7.3 wasn't breaking or needing to be replaced with a new truck.
The 08-10 gasoline engines in the super duties were reliable, the 5.4l 3v V8 and 6.8l 3v V10. The 08-10 Ford super duty body style in my opinion is the best looking body style. It's like older body style meets modern body style.
I currently have an ‘07 Ford Ranger, but found an ‘09 f350 dually with a 6.4 Diesel engine. If I did decide to get the f350, I wasn’t gonna use it to go pullin trailers all day everyday. I was gonna use it more as an everyday driver, as some might say, a toy. Of course I would stay on top of any and all maintenance, oil changes, any flushes, fills, and the occasional car wash. Would it still be worth it?
I have a 2001 7.3 and my son in law has had four of the 7.3's and also my grandson has a 99 7.3. My son in law has been tempted to by the 6.0 and 6.4 several times because you can get a really nice one for cheap but there are too many horror stories to keep him away. That is why I checked out this video because I was checking out a 2010 model, loaded with 175,000 cheaper than what I could probably get for my 01. It is too much of a gamble. Thanks for the info. It sealed it for me to stay away, run away!
My 6.4 is tuned and deleted and it runs like a dream. for some reason every other one i’ve seen runs like shit but somehow the one i end up with has 0 issues. very confusing
I owned a 6.4 for a few years it was my first truck and did great. The only issue I had was when i pulled a trailer from California to West virginia and forgot yo put it in tow mode...it threw a wrench code in Oklahoma and when i got to WV it wouldn't start for 3 days then it fired right up and ran great lol
I had one, 99% of the issues came from exhaust gas temps and fuel/oil filtration. I fixed both of these areas and it ran great, albeit I did detune it to the same spec as the 7.3, 275hp. I liked it, but that being said I wasn't looking to build huge power with it, it was a dump truck, all it needed to do was get up to 65mph.
188k on my 6.4. No issues with it. Delete and tune, do your basic maintenance and drive it like it’s supposed to be driven and you’ll be fine. Idk why these trucks get so much hate must be the high school kids beating on them to impress there friends I have had 0 problems thus far
these engines are fucking amazing (if u plan on building the engine) they can make crazy fucking power. fix all the problems and they can be pretty reliable
The Maxx force 7 6.4L is the same engine as Ford 6.4 the same engine parts are interchangeable good the thing about that is might be something to consider looking for Maxx force 7 6.4L powerstroke replacement engine swap to Ford F-250 - F-550 customization of engine parts from a 6.7 possible great option let me know the 6.4 powerstroke it's a lot better than with some people think because the 6.7 Powerstroke is a continuation from the previous engine with some improvements the 6.4 is the fourth best Powerstroke my top four are the 7.3 powerstroke and the 6.0 Powerstroke and a 6.7 Powerstroke and 6.4 Powerstroke

Delete the eye system and tune them and you don’t have a half bad truck, I have my 96 f350 rn I’m building to a show truck I can definitely see myself buying a 6.4 for a tow rig
I have consistently heard the 6.4l is the best motor for ever made (if you delete the egr and dpf) but personally i think that goes with EVERY deisel that has it
Don't forget, - Garbage valve train - leaky radiators - cracked heads - back two cylinders over fueling for emissions and burning a hole through the piston and or blowing a head gasket - water pumps that cavitate the block and I'm sure we're still forgetting some but they are rocket ships, when they run...
Unfortunately we are not experts in that realm. I'm sure there are companies/guys that can make emissions compliant swaps, up here in Wisconsin (minus a few countys) we're emissions free so it'd get deleted!

You have to go out your way to blow a head gasket on a 6.4.

@@knightrider1545 The fact that you don't have to think about it (as "the issue").
I have a 2008 6.4 L power stroke and it has 200,000 miles on it and it runs great. I have no problems with it it stock hundred percent.
So basically, a tuned 6.4 is a perfectly fine motor, and tuning one is definitely cheaper than doing a engine swap to something like a 12v with wayyyyyy less performance capabilities without heavy modifications
for the 6.4 problems i've found a solution. DPF delete i did that to mine and have had no problems
the 6.0 also had 4 head bolts, count em, 1,2,3,4. the 6.4 just had bigger bolts is all.

Where did you get it bulletproof at?
There is no term of bulletproof for 6.4
Still doesn't sound like a 6.0 but I do like that its got a modern tone to it.
I have been eyeballing one for sale that looks barely abused. 195k miles with all the right mods.

Sounds like what I just commented up in the thread. Lol. Ill copy and paste it here. Lol.
Another reason that Chevy makes better trucks. At our local firehouse has a 6.4 and it only has 24000 miles on it but to be fair is a lot for a ford. It makes a visit to the repair shop every few months.
Time to get the 6.7 power stroke

The regen cycles for the dpf is what leads to the rear two pistons cracking.

What you said there very great engines
Have an 08 6.4 modified, only issue was the HPFP. other than that no issues since the motor isn't cooking itself with extra fuel and regens.
If you guys do a 6.4L cummins swap build, you should take a 6.4L F-450 pickup and swap in a 6.7L cummins engine and an allison transmission. I know it's been done but I've never seen it done on UA-cam.
The 6.4 is not that bad. If its Deleted and on a slight tune and driven and have regular upkeep they run forever without issues.
It’s the least problematic engine I’ve had out of every power stroke I’ve had. I had a rotation of turbo rebuilds for it but bigger injectors caused that until I put an s369 on it and got away from workstock class
lol said nobody ever

My family enjoys them. Even knowing their problems. But man they pull. We currently own 6. My dad has two. Brother has one and I have one. And I have two uncles who each owns one.
Lol
The 6.4 is so bad that I went through 3 cores just trying to find a usable block. Melted pistons, broken crankshafts. We just got another one today that's seized solid! EPA killed this engine

@@christianrickard4082 wow, u know what they call a ford with over 200k, a lie. how many engines in your 7.4?
If your gonna sink money in to a 6.0 or 6.4 I’d take a 6.4 because of the power
You may want to look in to but I think the 6.0 was in till 2010 for the E250 and so on.
Yup E-Series ran them till 2010.
I apologize if it’s already been done but I think a “so you want a 12 valve” is in order 😄
Even with all the problems 6.4s have I’m still looking for one to buy right now 😂
me too bro 😂
🤡🤡🤡🤡
I already got ,,6.4s are the best hands down
Just got one last week and it’s at the mechanic for an oil and coolant leak😂😂😂 it’s badass though
@@rollysilva8369 we’ll you might not know what the first owner did to it,,,just remember you take cere of it ,,it Will take care of you
EVERY CLIP of the Truck is doing a burnout and doughnuts then cuts away a torn down engine?
Just curious if the 6.4 owners that’s had no issues in over 200k miles drive like any of the cut away shots in the video?
Yes , I think you guys should cummins swap a 6.4. I love the 08-10 super duty body style. and i will probably end up doing a cummins swapped 6.4 in the near future.
Nah I’d rather Cummins swap a 05-07 body style 6.0
Ford shortly there after cut ties with navistar and made the 6.7 in house in 2011 which is still being used today and is probably the most reliable powerstroke to date besides the 7.3
Love my 6.4 just gotta do regular maintenance
I absolutely love my 6.4. It’s actually in the shop getting some upgrades now.
Like an engine swap for an L5P?
“Upgrades” more like a rebuild.
Up grade....to a 12v?
Nope injectors fass 150 ladder bars nothing major.
same here i have my 6.4 ad absolutely love it.
I have a 6.4 powerstroke with 150000 miles and has gave me no problems
I drove a bus with the Maxxforce 7 in it. Overall it’s a stout engine in the application, but itself had its fair share of issues as I’ve been told.
Staying with my 7.3 with 423,000 miles. Still running strong.
I have an 05 f250 with the 3v v10.. it’s a great alternative to diesel.. I can get a crate engine for 3,500$ for it.. pulls pretty good too
The 3v v8 was garbage
I had to drive a 6.4 from Las Vegas to Sacramento while stuck in limp mode. 600 miles at 35 mph was a long fuckin trip.
Yes.
Yea put a commins rail in it 😁 or do a built 6.4 showing all the people all the upgrades that need to be done or should be done just a suggestion
I honestly love my 2006 6.0. 160k. No issues. Studded etc just change oil often.
yours is studded?
You said 4 TTY head bolts per cylinder on the 6.4, that is correct, but that's also exactly what the 6.0 had
6.4 are a larger bolt and don't seem to have the head gasket issues.
Get a 6.4 and do a 7.3 powerstroke swap now that would be a great idea.
What about the new kkd 6.7 steel piston swap for the 6.4. Just need to bore .30 over and resolve them cracking pistons
We have 2 deleted and one of them with a tune and they are both great running trucks that have never had any problems
Have had many trucks over the years...had most compliments on the 6.4
I'm getting a donut media "up to speed" vibe from these videos.
I have a deleted 6.4 and love it.
What you said
188k on my 6.4. No issues with it. Delete and tune, do your basic maintenance and drive it like it’s supposed to be driven and you’ll be fine. Idk why these trucks get so much hate must be the high school kids beating on them to impress there friends I have had 0 problems thus far
Yeah kids buy 6.4s a beat the God out of the to make it look like there bad
Drop 7.3 l And use a procharger Thank you very much have a nice day. It works well in 7.3 gaser.
these engines are fucking amazing (if u plan on building the engine) they can make crazy fucking power. fix all the problems and they can be pretty reliable
im planning on building one
Better have a very deep wallet cause it's gonna cost ya dearly!
Would take a 6.0 over the 6.4 and the 7.3 any day of the week.
I believe if you get a good one you've got a good one and the lemons stay lemons. This and I've had hands that could tear up an anvil with a napkin regardless of engine displacement or make...
I've got an '08 550 4X4 that has been a mechanics service truck since new. Used hard in the oil patch for several years. Regular service with fluid and filter changes and no time in a dealership ever. Little idle time, no short trips. 118k miles and still works and runs like new
Hopefully I didn't jinx it but it has paid it's way... So be it
🤣 when I hear the words "unreliable diesel" I automatically remember the 6.2 and 6.5 Detroit diesels
I did have my share of issues with my first 2 6.4s then I built one my way...so far so good ... regular maintenance Water Meth injection a nice tune ...and I get an easy 19 MPG on real punch I ran her to 14.01 1/4 mile but I spun at the line...came in at 95 MPH ... Will get into the 13's next time ... didn't have any cetane so I am not sure what the cetane was ...probably low 40's ... ohh and this is in an F450 Dually Super Duty King Ranch...I have the Track tickets to prove it... I am nervous I must say to be honest ....but this can haul! Oh I did punch out the stock Turbo and put in Whicked Wheels. and a little porting on the heads! But I did add a lot of filters Like Fass Fuel Filter, Mishimoto Coolant Filter...etc etc etc.. ...Do the Maintenance and use good oil...I like the Rotella T4 for now going to the T6 after I finish the next 2 Changes....and it Passes Emissions no problem ...although we don't need to have it done anymore...!
FINALLY!!!!!!
You got it right!!
I own a 6oh and drove past a 6.4 today thing sounded like it was Fallin apart It literally cringed my spine
I have a 6.4, no issues other than a tire pressure sensor
Had a 6.4 for years was coming up on 250k but had an accident and lost her now I drive a 6.7 with 10 speed love it also.... But me and the 6.4 had a rough start but after the delete egr and dpf love the sound and the half kit man she purred like a kitten..... So reliable it was almost my daily til it hits the pockets 😂😆😂
6.4 was also the first common rail ford engine. As well as the only one to come from factory with twin turbos
Compound not twins
@@94ddenton either way it’s the same dont freak out
I would buy a 6.4 in a heartbeat…..
For a Cummins swap😂
I would only get a 6.4 if i had a handy 7.3 powerstroke or 12v cummins engine to put in the 6.4 body
Delete the eye system and tune them and you don’t have a half bad truck, I have my 96 f350 rn I’m building to a show truck I can definitely see myself buying a 6.4 for a tow rig
I own a 6.4L. It has 289,000 miles on it and still going strong.
I would only buy a 6.4 if it was already blown up and either build an engine or swap it for a DT360.
Cummins swap and 6.4L F450 with a mean Eaton fuller 10 maybe 13 speed transmission and you’ve got and a good tow rig
I have consistently heard the 6.4l is the best motor for ever made (if you delete the egr and dpf) but personally i think that goes with EVERY deisel that has it
Don't forget,
- Garbage valve train
- leaky radiators
- cracked heads
- back two cylinders over fueling for emissions and burning a hole through the piston and or blowing a head gasket
- water pumps that cavitate the block
and I'm sure we're still forgetting some but they are rocket ships, when they run...
Diesel coolent with the additive
If you live in a emissions testing state and swap your 6.4 out for a Cummins, would that new engine also need a DPF?
Unfortunately we are not experts in that realm. I'm sure there are companies/guys that can make emissions compliant swaps, up here in Wisconsin (minus a few countys) we're emissions free so it'd get deleted!
@@CustomOffsetsTV I seriously hope that you wake up every day thanking your politicians for not destroying your freedom to own a diesel the way it was meant to run. Because what we have is a shit show.
