    In the slums of Manila, a determined group of women are literally turning rags to riches. In a city where the gap between rich and poor is clear to see, this pioneering new project brings the two closer together.
    Taking leftover fabric from clothing factories before weaving them into rugs and handbags, 'Rags to Riches' products have become the latest fashion accessory in Manila's high-end malls. It's founder, 27 year old Reese Fernandez, says her business works to "empower women" in the local community, "bringing back the dignity of the people" The women, many of whom used to live on a rubbish dump, now earn an income comparable to that of a nurse in the Philippines.

      Ikr, she's awesome!!:) like I'm going marry a girl like her one day!! The attitude and pure humbleness is very attractive, not to mention her beauty!! I must build more~ I don't want too, but looks as if I must break myself down completely and build from there!! I've changed a lot, but not enough in my opinion to achieve that which I want!! The struggle is real:) what does it take to get there? If it takes me lifetimes I'm going to unearthed this logic in me~ well, onwards I suppose!!:)

    Why are there race comparisons here like filipino-chinese is way better than pure filipinos etc.."there are no such things." i know that some chinese are business minded people but that doesn't mean that people with this blood are better than other races. There are some stupid chinese too that are impossible to be like her. I believe she was just raised by her parents the proper way and teachings with correct moral values because it's obvious she has such beautiful idea that comes from the heart and she applies it producing good fruit. Race has nothing to do with what she's doing.

    Other than the hard work of these women I think what I was most inspired by was how young this girl is, running this entire operation. No doubt she comes from an affluent family and probably had the financial backing to run an operation such as this, it is still inspiring that she chose to do this with her life and at such a young age. Similar projects are run in other Asian countries as well, such as Pakistan, where designers have sewing and bead work done by women in villages and in China where similar "scrap" blankets are sold. More power to all the people running such operations.

      ***** What do u expect? Most Filipinos have no ambitions. Generally, they are very passive.

    • @mingteedee
      @mingteedee 10 років тому +1

      ***** Don't believe every word of GavinoPro, 'coz his claims are all baseless and untrue. It is every person's choice if he/she chooses to be enslaved by anyone. But if an individual has vision, ambition, and determination, he/she can come long way to succeed.

    • @howardsagar3698
      @howardsagar3698 10 років тому

      mingteedee such a naive comment. Children born into poverty have zero choice when they are born to enslaved parents. Offered no educational opportunities, they grow up with very limited perspectives on the world except an awareness of vast inequity. This awareness by itself is no guarantee that they will escape from the enslavement of their parents, in fact the likelihood is exceedingly small, especially for girls who will likely be enslaved by the inevitability of bearing children in poverty. Choice implies an awareness of a choice. few have that who are born into poverty. Wishing it were so does not make it so. Sorry.

      Marygrace Takahashi philippines before were paradise, until european invaders forced us their laws and religion. they destroyed our identity, culture and way of life, just like what they did to native americans. we are the sons of god, the first peoples that inhabit this world. problem with modern filipinos is that they believe in christianity which was forced in our throats by europeans. our way of life were evil to them, thats why were in this mess, we dont know our true identity as we follow the european white supremacy. how can you follow such belief of the europeans, we asians were never mentioned in the bible.

    I love it. No matter who we are or where we are from, we all want better. We have to look past zip codes, ethnicity, race, etc and understand that we all want and deserve better. It's greed and selfishness that keeps people back. There is enough to go around but we and governments must be willing to be selfless as she has done. This is inspirational.

They consider themselves Filipinos because they were born or raised in the Philippines. This is happening because our own politicians are corrupt puppets of the Chinese businessmen in their own country. What a shame.

    i guess you didnt pay attention when it was stated that they all live in government housing.. to me this seems like a bullshit spin film thats priority is to make the viewer feel good than being objective about the reality of the situation

    Obviously, that not all people living in the Philippines were poor. Some people out there always criticized Filipinos. Like duh! We can compete on fashion and trendy things.
