In the slums of Manila, a determined group of women are literally turning rags to riches. In a city where the gap between rich and poor is clear to see, this pioneering new project brings the two closer together.
Taking leftover fabric from clothing factories before weaving them into rugs and handbags, 'Rags to Riches' products have become the latest fashion accessory in Manila's high-end malls. It's founder, 27 year old Reese Fernandez, says her business works to "empower women" in the local community, "bringing back the dignity of the people" The women, many of whom used to live on a rubbish dump, now earn an income comparable to that of a nurse in the Philippines.

She created more jobs then the government has ever done there.
Ikr, she's awesome!!:) like I'm going marry a girl like her one day!! The attitude and pure humbleness is very attractive, not to mention her beauty!! I must build more~ I don't want too, but looks as if I must break myself down completely and build from there!! I've changed a lot, but not enough in my opinion to achieve that which I want!! The struggle is real:) what does it take to get there? If it takes me lifetimes I'm going to unearthed this logic in me~ well, onwards I suppose!!:)
she;s cute
Yan ang Gina tawag nlng investors..so kung wla taong lakas loob mag invest..wla tlgang trabaho ang maiibigay ng govt natin..kundi assistant lng..rasyon or tulong..kya dnt blame the govt..
dont blame the government?
how many jobs would the price of Imelda Marcos' shoes have created?
Opals 94 yeaaaaaaaa that's just being exaggerated but i spread no hate, i really love her work and stuff 😍😍😍
I love this woman 😄 God bless her 😃 Let's make the world a better place 😄
Better than the rich men and corrupt politicians in the country. Wow! She's an inspiration to all women and a challenge to men. :) im so happy. Now i can sleep well.. lol!
That's what we get when we learn how to make lemons into lemonade, i want to be surrounded with people like her.
What do you mean "challenge to men"?
how about we put aside gender roles... she is an inspiration to all ----both men and women
Reece is such an angel....
The bags and purses that are made are a beauty
im sorry but how you dislike this?! the video is so inspiring!
Why are there race comparisons here like filipino-chinese is way better than pure filipinos etc.."there are no such things." i know that some chinese are business minded people but that doesn't mean that people with this blood are better than other races. There are some stupid chinese too that are impossible to be like her. I believe she was just raised by her parents the proper way and teachings with correct moral values because it's obvious she has such beautiful idea that comes from the heart and she applies it producing good fruit. Race has nothing to do with what she's doing.
I agree with you.
So true, it's the raring up ( how you are programed) plus "the vision in life", and also if you like what your doing and passionate in it.. it's your calling. Like, it should always be not only you will benefit but also others.
Almost all Filipinos have Chinese blood
As a Filipino and Chinese, the financial gain we have now was thanks to pure Filipinos :)
There are billions of chinese in China, if they were indeed this helpful, there would be no poverty in the Philippines
Funny how educating and empowering women actually tends to improve their family lives time and again no matter what country it is.
flibbertygibbet i tell u i have never seen in a country where the young and older girls work so hard to keep their family well fed and kept.
Amazing country of beauty yet so sad
Amazing how it's the man/Woman on the street improving lives and not the dumb useless politicians who just spend billions on weapons and guns to kill more people!!
Sooooo trrrruuuuueeeee
Despite of Poverty, The good thing in the Philippines is they know how to recycle and help the environment.
you are very talented women .... Filipinos are very creative.
Other than the hard work of these women I think what I was most inspired by was how young this girl is, running this entire operation. No doubt she comes from an affluent family and probably had the financial backing to run an operation such as this, it is still inspiring that she chose to do this with her life and at such a young age. Similar projects are run in other Asian countries as well, such as Pakistan, where designers have sewing and bead work done by women in villages and in China where similar "scrap" blankets are sold. More power to all the people running such operations.
Great story. Continued blessings for this program.
This is one of the best example of Filipinos who really make a difference in the life of his/her fellowmen. She does not judge, but she affirms and uplifts. That is a true Filipino spirit.
mingteede
I totally LOVE this woman!....what a blessing you are...and yes giving these woman..Dignity! . That is just as important as money. You and this wonderful rags to riches concept has touched my heart all the way to Canada. .. outstanding video from the Philippines.

Exactly! She is amazing at her age...I look up to people like her...Making a difference...I love that...
I nominate her for nobel prize
This story makes me smile. Gives hope to the hopeless...
Real enterprise as opposed to hopeless change we get.
This is how P500 becomes P50,000 , Well Done !
I stayed in slums like they showed in the beginning of the video.
This kind of story should be on the news everyday to inspire and give hope to other people. Unfortunately the local media is more interested in featuring young teleserye loveteams doing this and that
Can the product be found online?

5:41 I think she was saying the place was muddy? not 'good'.
Maputik = muddy
Mabuti = good
This is a wonderful story. The empowerment of women is what's needed to escape the grinding poverty. It's so clear the amount of experience that is available. The talent pool is amazing. Absolutely fantastic to see. A great story.
incredible
Great work
Beautiful.
Just fucking beautiful! :)
We need more people like this in the developing countries.

Brilliant woman :). I hope u continue this good work and hope the government will back u up on this .
jaxx I don't believe a corrupt government can back this up... It started without the government.... It will keep on without the government.... I don't believe in that government anymore.
Inspirational! God bless her and all the women who have helped to make the bags. This is how you inspire and grow to help your community!

.am 4m north east India & trying to set up such a thing like rags to riches but facing hurdles.
anyway...God bless you dear
Most rich people in the Philippines are Chinese people, they use Filipinos as labourers to gain profit.
***** What do u expect? Most Filipinos have no ambitions. Generally, they are very passive.
***** Don't believe every word of GavinoPro, 'coz his claims are all baseless and untrue. It is every person's choice if he/she chooses to be enslaved by anyone. But if an individual has vision, ambition, and determination, he/she can come long way to succeed.
mingteedee such a naive comment. Children born into poverty have zero choice when they are born to enslaved parents. Offered no educational opportunities, they grow up with very limited perspectives on the world except an awareness of vast inequity. This awareness by itself is no guarantee that they will escape from the enslavement of their parents, in fact the likelihood is exceedingly small, especially for girls who will likely be enslaved by the inevitability of bearing children in poverty. Choice implies an awareness of a choice. few have that who are born into poverty. Wishing it were so does not make it so. Sorry.
Marygrace Takahashi but the work of rags to riches is a stunning achievement and gives the next generation a glimpse of what escape from enslavement can be. they should be congratulated .
Marygrace Takahashi philippines before were paradise, until european invaders forced us their laws and religion. they destroyed our identity, culture and way of life, just like what they did to native americans. we are the sons of god, the first peoples that inhabit this world. problem with modern filipinos is that they believe in christianity which was forced in our throats by europeans. our way of life were evil to them, thats why were in this mess, we dont know our true identity as we follow the european white supremacy. how can you follow such belief of the europeans, we asians were never mentioned in the bible.
Such an inspiring story and this woman is incredible.
Thumbs up young lady God bless you! You are going to be so successful! Girl I'm really proud of you!
damnn...she so cuteeee...
PS: god bless her for the work she doing
I do not think god had anything to do with it - the catholic church has contributed to the poverty of The Philippines because of their stand on birth control
what's her name?
martinrgd chatolic church isn't the god dumbass
+martinrdg LOL. The Catholic Church is in Italy too and Italy is not a 3rd world country! Quit blaming God for your lust
Ziz Aziz

Hopefully the company grows and they can diversify their products :).
Very talented and ingenious people. Wish I could by these rugs locally without the middle men taking 98% of the profit.
wow.....this is so cool.
At first she had a big heart, and then she started to be creative and it worked. Who in the world could think tat those rags could be sold to the rich? Its really Amazing.....God bless you more.

Reese Fernandez. tondo district poverty 500000 people. densely populated. rags to riches
Your're an extraordinary! I wish
There would be many women like you-following Your steadfast footsteps!
what a smart girl... i realy realy liked and admire her
Very impressive. This is such an inspiring video. Thanks for the share.
well done you have worked wanders
Very Good Footage and God Bless Reese and the rest of the Talent and employees and the families
the founder of rags and riches (reis??) is chinese. and she's quite pretty!
Kudos! How I wish there are more like you
Hell - it would take a an entire collaboration of psychologists and sociologists to alter the state of mind of an entire country that spent - how many generations of a life lived in poverty and oppression?
I love it. No matter who we are or where we are from, we all want better. We have to look past zip codes, ethnicity, race, etc and understand that we all want and deserve better. It's greed and selfishness that keeps people back. There is enough to go around but we and governments must be willing to be selfless as she has done. This is inspirational.
It is wonderful and inspiring to see Reese empowering women to improve their lot in life. The women she is helping show genuine pride and a sense of accomplishment in what they do. This project gives both Reese and the women a sense of purpose and a valid reason to get up in the morning. This project also uplifts them and their country as sales reach global markets. The world is blessed with people like Reese, an angel on earth.
this should be shared in FB
+Puhchi Schutte That's where I discovered it.
Definitely want to order ill be going online na to buy!!!
Can anyone tell me what website to go on so I could purchase some bags...
www.ragtoriches.com is it that?
Most Americans can learn a valuable lesson by watching this video. Even those at the bottom of the economic ladder are fluent in at least two languages.
+John Lawn you know were your allies and we support your country we didnt takeover your country anyways i had a Filipino friend
+John Lawn the guy was just saying the Americans learn something from this video, thus learning something from Filipinos.
+XMrRusherJamMCX And a point Lawn is bringing up is the fact Filipinos HAVE to learn English, even in their own country, because its the language Americans speak. People at the bottom of the American economic ladder don't have to know another language, they just have to get off their butts and hussle
+Ivette Flores Not quite so, unless your country has laws requiring it. Your buddy, John Lawn, is just a whining little cry baby that wants something for nothing. If you, like your buddy, can't accept an honest compliment, well, fuck you, too.
wow this is great what they have achieved .Keep up the good work .
Thank you for the help to the woman and families to not be drawen into seling them selfs or the kids to make it through the night! and give pride to all who take part !God Bless you and all who help the ones find there Way!
She is the salt of the earth.
ah basta ako english carabao at hnd ko un ikinahihiya kun baliko english ko importante nakakaintindi ako kahit papano hnd nmn ako amerkano ...pilipino ako...
The only Chinese-Filipinos with Spanish surnames are the ones with Filipino fathers; if they were born with Chinese names why would they change it?
Philippines was actually one of the top progressing countries back then...but Japan, Spain, America and china happened and that severely crumpled philippines and corrupted the countries government. I wonder what philippines would look like if none of that happened.. :/
I am so proud of having people like you in my country.
You should be proud of Filipinos and not stupid Americans who ruin our country.
why does that girl look like a completely different ethnicity from all the poor women?
With an asian face and a name like Reese Fernandez, I think it's bc of horny Spaniards who invaded the Phillipines many moons ago. Some of them look straight up Mexican, some don't.
She is a Filipino-Chinese.
So what if her looks is completely different, she chose to work with them, give them hope & dreams, rather than those politicians just sitting behind the close door and enjoying the taxes collected from the Filipinos & mostly from the poor Filipinos who cannot escape from the taxes.
marie kate n I was just wondering if she wa foreign or something because the rest of those women dont look Chinese, they look Polynesians, but she definitely looks Chinese. I'm just confused about where she's from.
The girl being interviewed is Filipino-Chinese which is very common in the Philippines. The Forbes richest people of the Philippines are all Filipino-Chinese, except for one. They consider themselves Filipinos because they were born or raised in the Philippines. This is happening because our own politicians are corrupt puppets of the Chinese businessmen in their own country. What a shame.
Great job!
Last name Fernandez, so father is Filipino. Mother is a missionary worker (how Chinese is that ?!).
praise God.
What a very resourceful woman!!! And generous too
i guess you didnt pay attention when it was stated that they all live in government housing.. to me this seems like a bullshit spin film thats priority is to make the viewer feel good than being objective about the reality of the situation
Reese you are such a good human
you have such a big heart
love from canada
cute girl but achiever 💐💐👏👏
typo error on when she said, "dahil nga dito ka nakatira, MAPUTIK" means its muddy....its not MABUTI which you translated to, "its good"...
Obviously, that not all people living in the Philippines were poor. Some people out there always criticized Filipinos. Like duh! We can compete on fashion and trendy things.
Mas maganda inside & outside!!!!
What a great story! I love how the women live in such a bright, airy, and clean environment.
she the good friend of my professor in NUS singapore she was even feature in one of my lesson
When u can understand both languages lol srry 😂
this chick is pretty :)
Ung mukha nina anne curtis or kc conception and the like di din mukhang filipino so di din sila filipino? lol
good job wish you and the products the best .SMART move ....

@ 3:34
Almost everyone in the Philippines can speak English. :p
(I'm Half Filipina and always speak English whenever i'm there)
LittlePenguinLove in reply to ur comment: "Almost everyone in the Philippines can speak English. :p" :P
***** that's true. but anybody who isn't in America, has an accent. ask an American what a Canadian sounds like. or a Filipino fresh off the boat.(FOB)
Whether or not she's a member of the elite, at least she's giving back.
5:41 *maputik= muddy ("it's muddy", not "it's good")
Philippines not Phillipines
:)
she said maputik, not mabuti, so it should have been muddy not good, just saying
bakit kailangan talaga mag dislike?
