      You are full of bias
Go look at Saudi women in Saudi they have their full freedom nobody needs a guardian to go out that’s bullshit !!
In a country of 30 million you will find all sorts of psycho
Obviously she had a bad home a bad family support but this has nothing to do with the poeople or the state
This is an isolated family issue
How many teenage girls want to leave there homes all over the world it doesnt mean it’s right

It’s not her cry for help that disturbes me
What disturbs me is the people helping her are doing it for political reasons only .
you must understand the relationship between Saudi and Turkey and you would know what’s going on .
Istanbul is a hub for human trafficking
And there are suddenly concerned for an Arab women life !!!!

The fear they felt while they were on the run disturbed me to the core. I was in their situation with my husband here in Ireland. He abused me emotionally and cheated repeatedly and was addicted to weed. When I called the guards on him during one of his psychotic episodes they advised me to go to women refuge. He went nuts and called all my family members back home and trashed my reputation. He said stuff that could get me killed if I go home. He also didn't stop sending threats to me and I felt very shaken and petrified. I can't be thankful enough for the support I had in Ireland. The refuge, the therapist and psychiatrist all rushed to help me without any payments. I finally made peace with my family after a while when they realized how of a lier my husband is. But the fear I felt and the emotional damage is unforgivable.

When their family tried to manipulate them by saying "we did nothing to you" and act as if what these girls did is extreme, no the abuse they went through is extreme, my family tried to gaslight me the same way and denied they harmed me and would harm me if I came back, but I am also not stupid, and I would never go back, freedom and safety from abuse is irreplaceable.

My country has more than a million Muslims and I have never seen anyone wear it.
2.) The niqab has no explicit basis in Qu'ran
3.) You can wear whatever you want. I don't doubt for one moment that the vast majority of woman in SA WANT to wear the niqab. That's not an issue. The issue is that they don't have a choice. It's a legal obligation put forth by the state.

The author is Jean Sasson. She is an American who lived in Saudi Arabia for a few years in the 70s, and has written in the style of the women she has gotten to know, even become friends with, sharing their stories.
They are not easy reads. Very painful, painful realities that I think most people would rather just pretend don't exist.

Danielle Bridgeman I agree with top comment. The wife in this situation was definitely abused more so following the girls’ disappearance. America isn’t 100% free but we do have freedom of speech and can say things such as but not limited to: it is no surprise women especially are seeking asylum and running from a country which grants them little to no freedoms interpersonally and online. A country which mandates ideologies such as sexuality and religion is one which thrives on a dead system, enriched by the powerlessness of its people. The rich get richer, the poor stay poor. And the women? Well they just have to have sex with old, rich creeps to feel like they have value in their own country. Imagine being the wife in this situation. I know deep down she’s rooting for her daughters even if she’s stuck with her husband’s hands on her throat.

@Danielle Bridgeman Dude, chill the hell out and stop defending things you don't understand. I'm an Arab and I lived under oppression. Non Arab muslims or converts don't live the same life style as arab women living in arab countries. So yes Islam can be a safe haven for some people and simultaneously be the reason people live in fear and oppression. Don't discredit people's experience just because you saw one side. When the girls mentioned being abused by their father, can you imagine what would happen to the wife? All the blame will fall on her shoulders for not raising her daughter's "right". You can not even fathom the danger. You don't see how truly brave these women are. What is the USA promoting? Are you implying people shouldn't share their stories to keep up the image that Saudi is somehow heaven on earth? All countries have their shame. These are real people that have the right to get protection and regardless of where the people that help them are from... this was a life or death experience. Instead of trying to silence people keep an open mind.

This family seems like a pretty standard Saudi family, who can afford vacations but also do comply with very strict sexist cultural norms that heavily restrict their daughters' freedoms. Having enough money to go on a vacation does not magically make you more tolerant and loving. Abuse is also really complicated. The parents probably think everything they're doing is completely normal and consider that they do love their daughters ( which is why they beat them and restrict their freedoms- to make their daughters conform to what they think is best for them, no matter how mislead that belief is).

I don’t think any of us English folks from North America can truly understand the situation there. Saudi is not perfect but a lot of people are happy. In uni I had a (female) friend who was an exchange student from Saudi. She was very family oriented and always said nice things about her dad. She never drank alcohol or had a boyfriend but she was ok with that. I don’t think she was abused since she didn’t break the rules /: The concept of arranged marriage and male only leadership is not Islam exclusive. Christians have the FLDS and Islam has Saudi Arabia/Pakistan etc. This type of cult like brainwashing is not how I like my religion but who am I to judge. People will defend their beliefs to death.
Also this friend was rich af (like these girls probably were). Her family owned a 4 story condo building that housed their entire extended family. She would fly back any time we had more than 3 days off. In Canada, she was renting a $2500/month apartment with her brother and sister.

Master Ali what does religion have anything to do with this? We're not talking about faith, we're talking about girls who are way over they're head, their parents are just trying to prevent something the girls will regret later on in their lives.... If not in this life, then the next. I myself live in Jeddah, and I am a father of 3 girls, If my girls wanted to go exploring, I'd let them, but once they decide to go on their own, take off their scarfs, ect. Then I'm responsible as a parent for their actions, how they act is a reflection of me. Parents always know wants best for their children, hopefully one day you understand that! If my child even hinted that he or she wanted to go off on their own on some fantasy that their dreaming in, where the world is "too tough for them, and they don't have rights 😢".... Please! If girls from other parts of the world thought that, they'd sooner or later become homeless, drugs, or prostitution, whereas Saudi females don't have it as such. Sometimes we don't know how good we have it until it's gone!

@@TrusttheY parents always WANT best for their children. Its true. But parents don't always know what's best. Parents are human being after all. And children, once they reach certain age, they have mind of their own. I'm not saying that parents are wrong nor am i saying children are wrong. I'm saying that we all human being that may do mistakes and wrong judgement regardless of our age.
sometimes parents are too obssess about giving the best for their children, that they forget that children also have dreams, likes and dislikes and aspirations. And what's good for one people may not be good for other. What make one person happy may not be what makes another person happy. In my opinion, Wise parents are those who can do productive and meaningful conversation with their children, learn to understand their children point of view and also able to communicate their point of view to the children properly. Who knows you all will have same understanding and decision.
