Great vid. Can’t wait to see this thing driving
I promise you its filmed and on deck for next week!!
The 140--Series: In my opinion the best cars Volvo ever built and yours is in great shape for its age ( I've welded a lott rustier 140's than yours is over the years) .
For the windscreen frame repair I would recommend to take out the metal clips which are the main cause of rust in this section an replace the trim with the chrome and rubber frame from the 200-Series with plastic clips applied to the glass so you can apply grease in the groove to prevent further rust for years.
In my 35+ Stock of 140's the majority of them were coloured "100". This colour must have been very popular in the late sixties and early seventies.
I've never seen an AC in this models (perhaps it wasn' available in our not so hot country). Of the 50+ Volvos I had there was only one with AC: A 164 TE of 1974. Also the carburetter is new for me, I think it is no Volvo genuine part.
Make that car roadworthy and put it in traffic. You'll be surprided how good it feels to drive a Volvo 140.
(My daily driver is a 145 from 1969 (with split rear side window) and I never want to have another car).
Greetings from Kiel / Germany.
Heyy!! Welcome to the channel! I'm excited to share part 2 next weekend! This car has been an ongoing project for the last month and a half so a lot of progress has been made! I will look in to using a 240 wind screen. Thank you for the tip!!
Don't tell anyone I said it, but the early 140's had the most beautiful interior. It was all downhill for decades after all of Sweden got toxoplasmosis and threw elegance away. Can't find joy in 240 on up. I say this as the somewhat biased owner of a turbo swapped 144s. If you want to see it, plznotickets is the channel of record.
“Not much different from everything else”?? It literally STANDS OUT from everything else!
It definitely is a very unique look.
The Volvo was given a new black grill in 1971 which it kept for 2 years. The '71 Volvo had push button door handles, whereas '72 Volvo had flush door handles.
Thats a good bit of info! Thank you for sharing!!
Ahhhhh.... a mustard yellow 142, what can be more quintessential Volvo from the early 1970.
This is going to be interesting and fun to watch Dean, you got yourself a looker😍
I'm hoping to have a lot of fun with this car!
This was my 1st car my dad gave to me in 1985 with 120K miles. Same color buy mine hand 2 carburetors and was a pain to tune up. I pulled out the choke on mine until it warmed up then pushed it back in. I drove it for like 5 years. Brings back memories!
You were very lucky!! Would be a great first car
A 142s with slim bumpers would be my ideal Volvo, especially in rally spec; this could be an awesome car. Is there the possibility to put later model seats in the front, delete the rear seat to make way for a race car style safety cage and squeeze a turbo engine under the bonnet? A fantastic find, it really should be a keeper! Keep up the excellent work!
I like the race car idea but I would rather keep it road going with A/C to be enjoyed!!
my first car when i was 18 was a Volvo 142 Deluxe -67, back in the late 90's
NEAT! I love the pre-80's Volvos, especially the P cars!
I would LOOOVE a p1800ES
That,s a fine 71 with deluxe rims and the right grill👍👍
Its a fine loooking mustard machine!
Suuwheeeat!
My 142 is one year older and it's a daily driver.
Thats what I love to hear!
I was born in the same year as that car was built, so obviously it's cool as fk!!!
That dismount was off the scale, you won't ever beat that
And your O/H loves it......win/win all round
Phil I thought you were MUCH older than that!!!
@@DeanofMachines Dean ya cheeky mare!!!!
I'm 53 this year 😂😂🇬🇧
@@itsmephil2255 HAHA That's quite old!
Beautiful car and i love the color💛
Thank you! I really love this Mustard Machine!
Even with all of its flaws.... I'm in LOVE!
You and me both my friend! What would you do with it?
👌 I like these cars, I've had two 142, one 1971 Deluxe automatic, and one 1969😀 It vas long ago when they was cheep..., now they are wery expensive here in Sweden🇸🇪 Nice video 👍👍👍👍
Very cool! It's sad that these are becoming very expensive.
My neighbor gave me a 1972 142s free for a project for my grandson and me. It had been sitting in a field 15 years, I had to cut down trees and bush's that had grown up around it to get it out. Sadly he burned out on working on it and it's parked in my driveway now.
Awesome to hear its at least saved! Burn out is real and normal. Hopefully you’ll dig back into it some day!!
Excellent dismount! I was imagining a chorus singing The Song of the Volga River Boatmen playing in the background as you provided motive power to the mustard submarine...Being from PA originally I'm surprised to see that there is as much of this vehicle rust free as there is.
Thank you! I will have to look that song up.
You can't have too many Volvos!
I agree!!! Pile them up!
I didn't know Dean that you liked museum pieces anyway we are both crazy about VOLVO Alessandro from Rome. I feed on your videos next time
Welcome to the channel!!! I love these classics! Especially when they are nice but not TOO nice!!
You scored 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
awesome find!! I had two of these '71 142S models, and the second one was that same crazy mustard yellow. the 2-door hardtop is such an underrated shape, and I loved the horizontal extending-stripe speedometer. those old B20 Swedish tractor motors will last up to forever or 3.2 million miles, whichever comes first. (see Irv Gordon's P1800 for details.)
Im still friends with Irv on FB (RIP) i really enjoy the shape of this car!
@@DeanofMachines it looks pretty decent and I'm excited to see how it turns out! my first one had every part in the IPD catalog, but that could not protect it from the oxides of iron. yours should fare much better :)
I had a grey market 142e rally dash leather seats 4whl discs electric overdrive what a beast.
That sounds like a fantastic car!!
Hey, these "channels" at the floorpans would have housed the air heating ducts for the rear window in the base model "standart". which was a budget model. They came in grey only with black vinyl interior , rubber floormats and no headrests. These air ducts ran from the heater core to the rear windoes and jets would defrost the window.
Thats really interesting, thank you! I didn’t know that until now.
This is such a cool project! Can’t wait to see more this one has to be a keeper for sure
I would really like to keep it but someday it'll find a new home to fund other projects!
I love seeing a 140. As an owner, I can't get enough.
This is my very first 140!!!
Hell yes!! 142S, now you are speaking my language. My first car was a '72 142S, my second was a 144 and my third was a 145...admittedly the latter two were parts cars but they ran and drove!
I will admit I did not really like the 142 until I bought this one.
It's beautiful! Love the color and a non cracked dash! And that B20 running smooth as buttah! Gonna be a great series!
Hellooooo Marcin! Im excited to do something with this little car! The Mustard Machine!
hi. a did learn to drive with 142 volvo with b18 engine.so many memories from that volvo.greetings from finland
That's awesome!! Welcome to the channel!
Great video😀
Thank you kindly!!
I'm so glad it doesn't have the later 140 dash. The later dash strips all the soul out and molests it with angular plastic.
I do really like this interior
My first car back in 1982 was a red 1971MY 142, B20 engine with twin carbs and a four speed manual box.
I do hope that Volvo will return to producing vehicles that people actually want, rather than all electric milk floats.
I agree! These old cars are really great. Unfortunately the current company model is to produce cars like electronics. Making money is #1.
@@DeanofMachines Absolutely agree with your comments Dean.
Cool, brings a smile to my face as since last year I own the same year car in the same (and best imo) colorcode. Hope you keep it cause it's rare and the last year with the non-flush doorhandles.
Glad it brought you a smile! I really like this little car. Its a great color!
If there's anything I love more than a 240, it's a 140!
I struggle to choose just one favorite as you can tell!!
That’s an awesome car! Love the color and everything about it. Get that baby running!
That's the plan! Stay tuned for the rest of the series!!
Same year and colour as my 142. The front seats are the correct seats. 👍
Hey hey!! Welcome to the channel. Share some pictures of your 142 in an email! info@deanofmachines.com
Great to see a 142 on the channel, you cannot turn that down especially in that colour! Get the floors done, refurb the wheels and give he a buff to call that done!
I agree! Have purchased floor metal, need more parts. Have part 2 almost ready for next week!!
Looking forward to part 2 next week. That AC compressor is huge, looks even bigger than the York on my 84 242 TIC w/M46 manual. Might be worth getting a newer post 86 style compressor and seeing if it will work with the evaporator on the inside of the car. AC is a must down here in Texas and GA. Really enjoy seeing you resurrect these old Volvos.
Excellent score Dean. I wish my 164 was as solid. Lots of work, but they aren't making any more of them ✌️
... and great dismount
164 you say? Sir do I have a treat for you!!
Years of practice LOL!!
@@DeanofMachines I will accept treats in the form of 164 content or non rusted parts🤣
You miss the brake master cylinder and brake booster
Those really aren’t important.
Negative battery cable goes to the battery tray. In addition to the hold down clamp eyebolt hole, there's another bolt hole that accepts a 5/16" thread bolt, if I remember correctly, that holds the other end of the cable to the tray. Engine is grounded to the body with a thick ground strap that goes between the driver's frame rail and the block. I wound up using a 240 cable on my '73 145E, since I was dealing with a parasitic drain on the battery. Attached the short end to the stock location, then threaded a bolt into the side of the block with the long cable end attached to that. Drain issue went away.
I am kinda surprised the coil lasted as long as it apparently did. Friend of the family had the identical car, except a 1970 model. Coil failed in 1994. Became tempermental, then just stopped running a couple blocks away from our old house.
Kinda surprised that James Keller (vwbusman66) hasn't tried to buy this yet.
I did already sort the batt cable out thankfully. All this footage is from the last 6weeks
@@DeanofMachines Good...
Arnie Cunninghams parents in the movie Christine had the same volvo in the same colour
Seriously? Ive need to go back and watch that!
Keep on the good work
I appreciate that! The work continues!
Bro you can never save enough Volvos, gotta git em all
I don’t know if I have the bank account for it!! Im trying though!!
Great find!
Thank you Rick!! Just happen to get word of it!
i have had a couple of these =) i love em! i wish i knew they would be worth alot of money when i got older though =) i had one when i was 18-19 and some other volvos! nice find there bro!
I think they are very underrated. Or at least they were. Everyone turned them into race cars.
@@DeanofMachines yea they are... they are even rare in sweden... its not often you see one here... but when i see one im like COOL CAR! i love it.... the cars today are just ugly plastic cars.. back in the day the cars were art... maybe not the 142 and so on but its a cool car... if you had a collision with one of these... it was like a tank... maybe a little dent but the other car was totaled!
@@tomandersson5089 i agree!! I feel soo bored in a new car!
Tinded windows is hard to find in Sweden. A volvo 140 Looks great with these windows.
They do have the slightest hint of tint!
That is a York a/c compressor. They’re very durable. Nice find
It sure is! These old compressors are great!
The 142 is the same colour as the 1974 144DL I had as my first car.
That's pretty cool! I'm hearing that the Yellow was a very common color!
Nice and slow unloading this time. No front lip though, for the glory. I wish I could see your neighbor's face, every time he spots another Volvo in your yard 😂
Easy as she goes!! I am VERY lucky to have the neighbors that I do.
Nice. It modernized: The grill is '72. It's lovely and worth saving. Lots of welding and the upholstery is a challenge. But manual, gas, carb... it'll run for a million miles further. GND (-) from battery 16mm^2 to starter motor is the best, I guess.
Thats a good eye! I didn’t know it had a 72 grille. I always aim for battery ground to start bolt or block near starter. Electrically it makes most sense
@@DeanofMachines Until 71 it was that all-alu front more like a real grill. The black in 72 (with resetted modern door handles). But this was Sweden - or Europe - maybe the US-sold were 'one year ahead'. Hehe. 👍
@@andersf5464 thats very possible! Ill ask around
Also VP stands for Volvo Parts unless its Volvo P then its penta.
I think you might be right!
The 240 windshield fits.
Ive heard this! I wonder how much 240 sheet metal I can use around the window!
@@DeanofMachines I have heard the modern gasket works., so no trim needed
Imagine living in an HOA with that in the driveway.
This is exactly why we don't!
The grund Connec under or side of batteri
Ill have to look for it!
Would those doors fit a 242? The door handles and quarter lights are so much nicer :-)
That I don't think is possible...
Carb needs to be taken apart and cleaned.
I think you are right Erik! Who knows how long it's been living the worry free!!
You have any rear seat center arm rest for mid 60’s 122? Or you getting rid of those nice fenders on that baby blue wagon 😉
Unfortunately I do not! Not parting the blue wagon either :)
ground goes under battery trey
I will have to try that!
Re: the dismount- next time, take it out of gear. Maybe also release the e-brake.
Just sayin’
It was free rolling. It didn’t roll very well.
Hey Dean! Really lover your channel. You mentioned Pertronix to replace the points. I have a 82 244 (Canadian spec) B21A/Stromberg purchased new by my grandfather. I'm about to embark on replacing the points with my mechanic with an optical system by FAST (formerly CraneCAM). I already have the kit. Issue with the points is that they get out of whack relatively fast and my mechanic diagnosed a loose distributor shaft as the culprit. Asides a rebuild of the distributor he recommended the optical kit versus the magnetic Pertronix. Told me that the shaft play would have no impact on the newer setup. Just wondering if you have any experience or opinions on this conversation? Thanks so much!
My opinion is, fix the loose distributor while its apart. Both optical and magnetic pickups are very good. I prefer the pertronix units personally. Thanks for the love!!
Thanks! Agree with you that the rebuild would have been the option but since the whole distributor with shaft would have had to be removed I may have been out of my part for a while. Not too many work on these and apprently Bosch no longer supplies parts either. I found on ebay someone who would send a rebuilt updated magnetic unit in full... . I might get that anyway as an extra parr. Will keep you posted on how it goes with the optical unit. I'm looking forward to a smoother operation than the points 😊.. Too bad you're not closer by here to Montreal. I would have work for you haha. All the best an keep it up!
@@anthonysipos1002 Send me an email at info@deanofmachines.com I work for a Toronto based company so working on your car isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility!!

Will do! Most part sales go through our membership program!
If it hade been in Sweden i Walt it
I think many swedish people love this car!
Potato level dismount? I guess potato is the better end of the 1- potato? 😂😂😂
The question is, how much to value a potato?
@@DeanofMachines well that depends on it’s final form? Jacket potato is 10/10, new potato is 0/10? Chips 8/10?
4:08 5 rattar.
