The High Chaparral is an American Western-themed television series starring Leif Erickson and Cameron Mitchell, which aired on NBC from 1967 to 1971. The series, made by Xanadu Productions in association with NBC Productions, was created by David Dortort, who had previously created the hit Bonanza for the network.
The theme song was also written and conducted by Bonanza scorer David Rose, who also scored the two-hour pilot.
The show revolves around "Big John" Cannon (Leif Erickson), a rancher living in the Arizona Territory in the 1870s. He runs the ranch, called The High Chaparral, with his brother Buck (Cameron Mitchell) and son Billy Blue (known as Blue Boy) (Mark Slade).
Blue Boy's mother, Annalee (Joan Caulfield), is killed in the first episode by an Indian arrow, and John Cannon then marries Victoria (Linda Cristal), the daughter of powerful neighbouring rancher Don Sebastián Montoya (Frank Silvera), in what is initially a marriage of convenience. His marriage to Victoria also brings her brother Manolito (Henry Darrow) to live with the family.
Rest in peace Mr Henry Darrow. Manolito was my most favourite person in the show.
buck/ mono/ linda
I second that , I wanted to take my wife out to Old Tuscan for the reunions they had there for the fan club around 8 years ago ,he was coming to them ,would have been nice to meet ol Manolito 🙂🙂
He was my first crush as a young child... 🥺
@@221b-Maker-Street I'm from Spain, he was my favourite, Manolito Montoya for ever! ,🌹Henry Darrow
The High-Chapparel in 2022.
RIP Linda Cristal - she was fantastic in this series
They don't make them like this anymore. One of the best Westerns on TV at the time, and on BBC2. There were some fab TV series coming from America at the time.
This was better than David Dortort's other show, Bonanza, but not nearly as popular.
Tucson's unofficial anthem...every high school band in the city plays it.
Did Jo Jo ever return after smokin' that California grass?
I loved this show when I was a kid!! It was my absolute favorite. The stories were tense and believable. And the acting was terrific - especially the chemistry between the actors. They made it fell like they were a real family - blended and all. Thanks for posting this!
Greatest tv theme ever in my opinion. Cameron Mitchell's role a great character. Could just imagine him in the real wild west.
Tim- never saw him outa his black outfitt. never saw smokers in the show
Easily the greatest
Rip Linda Cristal sad. Will miss her
Rest in Peace Ms Linda Cristal.
Reminds me of great times watching this with my Dad.
Rowdy Yates Same Here!😂🤠🔫🐎🐴🏜️🇺🇸
Dang right, no horsing around during High Chaparral or the Johnny Cash show. Sit down and pay attention.
This was a damn good TV western series, and i wish CBS/Paramount would release the show on DVD already, since its entering its 50th anniversary since its debut on NBC-TV in Fall 1967,those were great days for watching good Primetime TV!!
You can get the entire 4 season on DVD. It is available in Europe so it is region 2 and you would need to buy a region free DVD or Blu Ray player but it is worth it. There is also a guy in New York who bought one of these region 2 sets and converteted it to Region 1 so it will play here. He did a fantastic job and he charges a very reasonable price. I forget his e-bay address but I have it some where. If you go to E-Bay and put in High Chaparral complete series I think his offer will come up. He has several old hard to find series. Dizz
This show is on DVD, I have season one and two and I enjoy them.
Yeah ,remember watching it as a kid ,great tv show they just don’t make them like that anymore.
Joe S Hill I love it, one of the best of all time, up there with Gunsmoke!!!!
== YES IT WAS JOE--SURE DID LOVE IT ---I SEEN THE FIRST EPISODE WHERE ANNALEE GOT KILLED ''''''''
Linda Crystal AKA Victoria cannon
RIP
2-23-1934 - 6-27-2020
Beautiful
No sabia que habia fallecido Linda Crystal Dios la tenga en su Gloria
Best theme of all time
Terrific music from the man who also created the theme to “Bonanza”, David Rose. The artwork shown during the intro and closing credits is excellent. It really captures the Southwest of the day.
Be nice if it was possible to get hold of some of that artwork.
Great show all the actors were awesome had a crush on Linda great story lines❤
Man, The High-Chapparel IS STILL My No1-favourite-American-Eestern and STILL love it's music too 👍
Same here
Mr Roberts. I loved them too
Man, The High-Chapparel is My No 1-Favourite-American-Western-PERIOD. Leandro Roberts .
I was in love with Victoria..what a beautiful woman
😢Rest in Peace Linda Cristal of The High Chaparral series 😢
RIP Henry Darrow aka Manolito! 🙁🌹
My now late grandfather used to love this show and Bonanza. Miss you grandad
A nice Memory from Childhood ☺. Manulito R.i.P. 🥀
REST IN PEACE, MANOLITO!
My most favorite western theme song since I was 6 in the 1960's.
Has quite a dramatic feel to it
I am not a big fan of the old westerns at all but this was a great show. Best credits ever. Great chemistry w/the cast, action everything you want in a western and a show in general.
RIP Linda Cristal . She died on june 27 2020 age 86.
Yes, the High-Chapparel 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇺🇲🇬🇧🇺🇲💪💪
One of my favorites, filmed at Old Tucson, my home town. :)
Buck Cannon was in many ways the central figure in HC. He was the right hand of Big John , while Victoria and Blue could always count on his support against his stern brother . The cowhands liked him a lot and of course his friendship with Manolito was legendary. Working hard in dangerous territory, two fun-loving men , with a kinship like brothers risking their lives for each other,
Hola , Que linda serie familiar , que actores , que historias , que señora banda sonora , Recordar es vivir , es sentirse vivo y mirar las cosas buenas que ya pasaron , Gracias .
Just got done watching this what a great western:: that really never got the recognition it deserved:: what a great life it must have been living on the high Chaparral::: no- body FOOLED with big John cannon!
Such great theme songs back then! I loved this one and The Big Valley.
A good western; sweaty, gritty, dirty except for Victoria. She always looked air conditioned fresh and beautiful. Cooked gourmet meals, fresh flowers, beautiful colorful outfits and perfect makeup in the extreme hot Az. desert. But I loved the show.
This show was way ahead of it's time. I think this was the first show where Mexican characters were cool. I loved Frank Silvera in this. Where is this quality on tv now?
Mr. Frank Silvera was a Jamaican-born American.
@@tamibennett8683 The writer posted "Mexican characters", not actors.
@@tamibennett8683 That is correct Tami. I was very surprised when I read that a few years ago. Speaks to how well he played the role; R.I.P. Don Sebastian Montoya.
A.Martinez - a regular on 70's TV.
Descansa en paz Manolito RIP 🙏🙏🙏😭😭
Truly God You blessed all those years of My Childhood and teenegerhood thanks that You let me live un this wonderful tiene another society with more mercy in all
It was a lovely time to grow up
This show was a well written piece of art! Great Western.!
It sure was
I had such a crush on Linda Cristal when I was a young teenager\\
Then you must watch the move with Charles Bronson "Mr Majestyk". Linda was beautiful and sexy (no wonder Vince Majestyk took her to bed). I long for the 70's and 80's.
@@edwardpennacchini7841 I'm going to check that movie out right now, anything with Bronson in it is worth it's weight in gold!
Wow, I'm surprised anyone still read my old comment! Thanks Carlissa. Yes, Bronson was one of the rare breed of actor/actress who almost never made a bad movie. All the Death Wish movies were very good and he made other memorable ones like Breakheart Pass. Enjoy.
@@edwardpennacchini7841 I just found out about High Chaparral a few months ago when they starting airing reruns. I fell in love with this show! What a show, the cast of characters, the actors & actresses, the storylines, the plots, etc... I wish it was on when I was a kid in the late 80s. This show is better than most of the things on today! I would rather watch black & white movies, older TV shows & movies than anything, because everything is so aggressive, demeaning, blood & guts & every word are swear words. Don't get me wrong, I love a good horror movie and I can deal with cussing, but everything shown today is decensitizing our youth and leaves no room for originality or imagination. As far as Charles Bronson, I agree with everything you said regarding him. He is and was the ultimate tough guy and you'd never catch him in a dress for a laugh lol. I've been a fan of Bronson since I was a kid! His whole demeanor makes ladies fall in love with him, men wanna be him and kids want him to protect them. He never acted like some super human in his movies and that's what I always respected about him. He always took care of business and was an "every man". Thank you for your comment, I love when the comment section is positive instead of negative!. Have a great day and I wish u many blessings.
= SHE WAS A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN----I STILL HAVE A THING FOR HER ---LOL==
The Chapparal theme always sounds similar to "Telstar" by The Tornados to me.
Always thought that too,
Same here.
UKMikey
That is very true. It might of inspired by Telstar. I was only five years after its release The High Chaparral started.
Must confess I never noticed until seeing your comment..... Well spotted!
I thought I was the ONLY other person on Earth who noticed that!!
My brother and I used to get to go to old Tucson and watch this being made. I wish they would release a good U.S. dvd set. Best T.V. Western ever. Thanks for posting the theme.
Oh..my..did you really!!..wow.
What an excellent programme, i remember watching this at my moms, in the late 60s on BBC2 , if any one remembers, at the time TV sets were a bit tempremental, we had to use a piece if co-axial wire to get a picture!! and not a very good one, thanks to digital TV its all clear and bright now !! happy days lol
I saw this a child and hearing it now it brings back the few good memories about my childhood, i felt free watching the series. Loved it then and love it now. Goosebumps. Manolito por siempre!
"I felt free watching the series." Fifty years on, I can still feel the salt air watching "Westwind" on Saturday mornings. Till it was time to mow the yard...
The 32 dislikes need to be soundly Horsewhipped!🤨🤠🐴🐎🐂🏜️🇺🇸
I'll go along with the general consensus of opinion, I believe that it is the best western series on TV and stands head and shoulders above anything else, including Bonanza, Gunsmoke and even Rawhide. The High Chaparral has believable characters / relationships and unlike most other westerns, it is largely filmed outdoors at Old Tucson as opposed to in a studio that echoes people voices. Like with most, Uncle Buck is my favourite and I like the way that he shows his nephew, Billy Blue the same love and concern that a real uncle would and on more than one occasion hugging him and kissing his forehead in times of sorrow. I also like how Victoria shows genuine love to her sometimes awkward and idiotic brother in law Buck, but then again we all love Buck and would not have him any other way.
Roger Auclair
I would have to agree with you there. But all these other TV shows were top notch also. Great actors, good storylines and likeable characters.
YES BUCK AND BLUE BOY ===
Roger Auclair. You’re right it speaks well of Victoria that she showed true affection for her “ awkward idiotic brother-in-law. “ it speaks well. It’s better than what you can say about me & my feelings toward MY awkward idiotic brother-in-law . Now there’s a real test of “True Grit” , putting up with Sammy!
I was delighted when I saw Henry Dallow guesting in Startrek Voyager . A great and powerful part that he was exactly right for .
i watched it as a young man -
moved to Arizona
i know henry darrows daughter well.
sure is a small world
Your blessed, I loved monalito's character plus the whole cast my favorite western & it's opening High Chapparall them song #1 !
The High-Chapparel is STILL my favourite-American-Western here in 2021👍🏴🏴🇬🇧💪🇺🇲🖤
Same people that brought us " Bonanza "
This is mine and my kids favorite show! We just love the cast.
Such a great show, the charecters plots, the locations, they did every thing right.I really miss it.
I do agree The High-Chapparel has been a damn-good-U.S-Western and STILL is my No 1-American-Western too. Leandro Roberts .
Westerns had the best theme songs of any genre on television.
wonderful series and watched some re-runs recently, music to die for,
Probably the best western of its day. And a damned fine theme!
Me hace llorar. Este tema. No sabía que había fallecido Linda Cristal
Y hoy se nos fue Manolito.
What a theme song..really outstanding
Great theme and a great video: thanks.

One of the greatest themes ever for a Western ...
Movie or TV series ...
I used to love Buck. He was cool.
Man, the High-Chapparel is STILL my No1-favourite-American-Eestern and I STILL love the music/tunes of the High-Chapparel too.
STILL my No 1 In February 2023.
I loved this tv show. I always thought that its theme music was remarkably similar to 'Telstar' by The Tornados.
Debut on 9/10/1967.Aired Sunday evening at 10:00 (EST) after Bonanza.Lasted for only one season.
season 1 of the high chaparral is coming to dvd on august 28,& is being released by shout factory.

I think most guys liked Victoria, I know I did. She was one good looking and tough lady.
kathleen bohannon Buck & Manolito
My favorite part was the friendship between Buck and Manolito.
Love this show
There's a pretty fair resemblance with this theme to the melody of the Tornados number 1 instrumental hit "Telstar".
My favourite western ever, Blue Boy,Buck and big John Cannon... the theme music was the best...
I still cry knowing most of my high chaperal pepole are gone
Adiós Señora Cannon.
Liked the High Chaparral.....darker and grittier then the other westerns of the time.

The High-Chapparel is my favorite-American-Western-Series period . Leandro Roberts .
Linda Cristal! My number two boyhood tv crush. Right behind Melody Patterson from F Troop.
goatboy
Linda Cristal came in a very close second to Diana Rigg from The Avengers.
RIP Henry Darrow - sexy and always funny. He will be missed.
This was my favorite show in the 1970s along with Fury
Manolito 😊👍
What about there horses
How olds are they
They love those horses
Kind regards New Zealand.
Lives: Mark Slade, Henry Darrow and Don Collier.
Henry Darrow dead.
How much older was Leif Erikson than Linda Cristal? They were supposed to be married on the show, but the guy looked old enough to be her father.
trwent Men marrying much younger women was common and acceptable back then.
he was born in 1911 and she was born in 1934 - so yes a bit of a gap - look at the present incumbents of the white house though so maybe not just the era
My dad and I as a young kid were huge fans of this show - we loved it. Whenever I hear the theme tune etc it takes me back to those days and reminds me of my now beloved late father. I started humming the tune again as I did as a kid, whilst typing out this.
Happy days, we just didn't know it.
Bom demais
When I was in high school in the mid-'70s, the pep band that played for the basketball games played this song. (We were the Aggies, so it fit, in a way.) I played clarinet in pep band, but although I can't remember the clarinet part at all, I can still remember the low brass playing that driving rhythm that is the best part of the song!
Linda cristal as been in a jhon Wayne movie the Alamo ❤❤❤❤❤❤
My favorite western serie.
